Please restore my translation[edit]

Hii,

I was translating History of Neuroscience in Bengali and also updating in Wikipedia content translation page but during publishing the extended version (rest of early views) of my translation, it was showing some conflict and got deleted. As an administrator can Wikipedia restore my submission. It will be very helpful for me as tomorrow I have to submit to Bengali Wikipedia.

https://bn.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%A6%B8%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%A8%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%AF%E0%A6%BC%E0%A7%81%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%9C%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%9E%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A8%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B0_%E0%A6%87%E0%A6%A4%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B9%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%B8 — Preceding unsigned comment added by অনিন্দিতা ভট্টাচার্যী (talkcontribs) 09:51, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@অনিন্দিতা ভট্টাচার্যী: This is the English Wikipedia, we can't do anything about the Bengali Wikipedia.
If your edit experienced an edit conflict, do not close the window or tab but look down at the bottom of the page for work. If you've already closed the tab, well... the data that was on your end might still be there if you go back to that tab (or not). Ian.thomson (talk) 10:07, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do i create a page and make it visible[edit]

Im a movie editor from indian cinema. How do i create my profile and make it visible? Please help — Preceding unsigned comment added by Queen82 (talkcontribs) 10:49, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Queen82: Hello; unfortunately, Wikipedia is not a place to create your 'profile'. Wikipedia reports on what has been written in independent reliable sources by persons with no connection to the subject. If you pass the WP:NOTABILITY guidelines, interested editors, who should also be independent of you, will create an *article* in the fullness of time. ISBN trouble[edit]

Hi! ^_^ hope you are great. I created this article and I have tremendous trouble with the ISBN of the book I cited, I tried with both Amazon ISBNs but when I go to check it on the "Find on Amazon" or "Find on Google Books", it doesn't show up. May anyone help me please? I'd greatly appreciate it. I cherish you all. --CoryGlee (talk) 12:43, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@CoryGlee: Seems to work for me. Eagleash (talk) 12:59, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Eagleash: Oh! it works if you search for "JP"!, I now understand!, thank you!. --CoryGlee (talk) 13:03, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Netflix charts[edit]

I would like to ask if Netflix's daily top 10 chart per country can be used on pages? I'm not sure if the same standers are applied to TV series charts, but per Wikipedia:Record charts, "Charts pertaining to only one specific retailer should not be used", meaning you can't add Amazon, Spotify, and iTunes charts. So I'm not sure if this applied to TV series and Netflix's daily top 10 charts. CherryPie94 🍒🥧 (talk) 12:43, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@CherryPie94: I'd say the Netflix charts are analogous, and so should not be used, but WT:FILM is probably a better place to ask to reach a more topic-focused group of editors. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:45, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@AlanM1: Thanks for the reply. I will post my question there. CherryPie94 🍒🥧 (talk) 09:45, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding different meaning to existing entry[edit]

Hi, the page for "Citizens Councils" reflects only the White Supremacy historic explanation for the term, we want to add a contemporary one, about new Citizens' Councils based on participatory democracy. How can we structure this new, added and VERY different entry under the same name? Thanks a lot! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Collaboration Geek (talkcontribs) 15:34, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First, you would have to establish that the new concept is actually notable enough to merit an encyclopedia entry. Then, you would have to create an entirely new article, under a title such as Citizens' Councils (participatory democracy). The next step would be to put a hatnote on the main article, saying something like "This article is about the white supremacist organizations. For the 21st-century participatory democracy movement, see Citizens' Councils (participatory democracy)" and vice versa. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:41, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
...  which is done by placing a template at the top of both pages: {{About|desc|other-desc|other-page}}, where desc is the description of the page on which the template is placed, other-desc is the description of the other page, and other-page is the name of the other page. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:51, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Numbered list with paragraphs between the examples[edit]

Hi, I was wondering if there is any way to have a numbered list whose numbers start where a previous list left off. What I mean is something like what I've put in italics below, but where the kangaroo examples are labeled 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2. If this is possible, it would be enormously useful for example formatting in articles about linguistics.

Blah blah blah here are two English sentences:

  1. Every farmer who owns a donkey beats it.
  2. A farmer who owns a donkey beats it.

Blah blah blah here are two more English sentences:

  1. If Kangaroos didn't have tails, they would topple over.
  2. If Kangaroos didn't have tails but did have jetpacks, they wouldn't topple over.

Botterweg14 (talk) 17:44, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Botterweg14: Check out Help:List#Paragraphs_inside_list_items and some of the other examples on that help page. It shows how to do what you are trying. RudolfRed (talk) 17:58, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for the answer! That would work as a hackey solution, but often in practice this will be substantial amounts of text between the items. I worry that using that trick will complicate the markup, making it much harder to edit (especially for newcomers). Is that the only option? Botterweg14 (talk) 18:14, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's the only way I know of do to what you're asking. Alternatively, you could restructure the text so that the blah blah blah part is not needed in the list itself, but either before or after it or in a paragraph elsewhere. RudolfRed (talk) 19:34, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Botterweg14: I often see broken # lists and other problems related to auto-numbering. If there is a need to refer to an item number in other text in the article (as is likely the case in this example), or if they need to match a source, it's important that those numbers not change. Other editors will often come along and insert or remove items, or accidentally insert line breaks, causing the numbering to break. Most numbered lists are fairly short and it's not such a big deal to manually number them, which avoids these issues. Additionally, I often see numbered lists that should, instead, be bullet lists or tables because the numbers (which imply order or ranking) are not meaningful and/or not in the sources (i.e., they are effectively WP:OR, and may imply order that is not true or in the source). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's a very good point. So it sounds like what I'm looking for really isn't possible with the current wikipedia resources. Is this something that could be developed? I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult, though I don't know much about how wikimarkup works under the hood. (Maybe the mechanism used for references could be adapted?). Botterweg14 (talk) 02:19, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Botterweg14: Not exactly, but my point was that automatic numbering has limited use in a Wikipedia article, and that it usually makes more sense to number items manually, if at all. Having said that, I did the following with {{Ordered list}}:

Blah blah blah here are two English sentences:

  1. Every farmer who owns a donkey beats it.
  2. A farmer who owns a donkey beats it.

Blah blah blah here are two more English sentences:

  1. If Kangaroos didn't have tails, they would topple over.
  2. If Kangaroos didn't have tails but did have jetpacks, they wouldn't topple over.

You still have to manually set the |start= parameter (after the first group) to the correct starting value for the group. There may be things (some other templates, etc.) that don't work well when wrapped in the template, either. I'd suggest just numbering them manually (or not at all if the numbers have no meaning and you don't need to refer to them by number). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 08:00, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again! I really appreciate your help. In many cases, number isn't really necessary, but especially in longer sections it would be extremely useful as a means of referring back to examples without using phrasing that "breaks the fourth wall". Is there a place where I could request development of such a tool or is that just not how things work? Botterweg14 (talk) 12:38, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it would be nice to have such a tool that would be able to keep track of numbering throughout an article – not just of example sentences in linguistics, but also of mathematical expressions or diagrams in science articles. I don't know of any tool that does that, and from my own limited experience of tinkering I don't think one can be created. At least not as a template (because for it to work each invocation of a template will need to store a variable to be accessed by the next instance of the template, but that's impossible as each invocation of a template on a page is processed independently of the others). This should be achievable from the software side though (recall how well the mediawiki engine keeps track of reference numbers?), so an extension can probably be created by the developers (who knows, maybe one exists already). Regardless, the next place to pose this question would be Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), that should definitely solicit feedback from people with more technical experience than me. – Uanfala (talk) 13:07, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much! I made a post on the Village pump per your suggestion! Botterweg14 (talk) 13:41, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

far-right but not far-left?[edit]

Dear Wikipedia, How is it fair that Patriot Prayer is described as 'far-right' and Antifa is merely 'left-wing'?2605:6000:6CC7:E300:8475:BEB6:5144:EEB9 (talk) 18:29, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving problem[edit]

Talk:Finns Party is showing an archives box with its only archive Talk:Finns Party/Archive 1 as a red link. There are plenty of archives, but they are filed under Talk:True Finns as the article was moved. How can this be fixed? JIP | Talk 20:13, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: I think you can just update the "archive = Talk:True Finns/Archive %(counter)d" part of the template to point to the correct page name. If there are existing archive pages, you can move them to the correct location. RudolfRed (talk) 20:23, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like the archive pages are in the correct place now, so another editor is fixing it. RudolfRed (talk) 20:27, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved the existing archive files, and corrected the archive config so hopefully when the bot next runs it will archive correctly. --David Biddulph (talk) 20:29, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for fixing the problem. JIP | Talk 21:22, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. I'm glad to see that this morning the bot caught up with the backlog, archiving from the page for the first time since it was moved in 2013. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:50, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wont let me edit[edit]

Hey, it won't let me edit the page for CNN for "protection against vandalism" apparently, I was just attempting to revert the article to it's previous, more accurate version, I would be happy to continue to do so once I'm able to edit the article.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.247.154.33 (talk) 22:45, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You can post a request on the article's talk page along with {{Edit semi-protected}}. If you create an account, then after 4 days and 10 edits you will be able to edit semi-protected pages. RudolfRed (talk) 22:56, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
