Question on BLP policy for recently deceased individuals.[edit]

I came across Bill Spanswick while looking at recent edits. I've been around a while, but I rarely touch BLP articles outside of reverting vandalism. Local news sources indicate that this person died yesterday, but I understand that BLP policies can still apply to recently deceased people. Does that mean we wait to remove the living people category? Or is an article about a retired athlete of no tremendous fame low-profile enough that it can just be removed? TornadoLGS (talk) 02:36, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello TornadoLGS. Although you are correct that BLP policies apply to recently deceased people, nothing in that policy prevents routine maintenance of such articles when reliable sources report the death and there is no controversy. The policy requires extreme caution to avoid reporting that "he was murdered" or "he died of a drug overdose" or "he was a really mean SOB" without impeccable sources. All blogs and social media outlets and tabloid gossip coverage must be excluded from such articles. So, feel free to remove living people categories, and add relevant categories like "Deaths in 2020" or whatever. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 06:58, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

is an article about a retired athlete of no tremendous fame low-profile enough that it can just be removed?

Nope. Herostratus (talk) 07:37, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Herostratus: So how long after death should the living persons category be removed in such an instance? TornadoLGS (talk) 19:15, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oof, @TornadoLGS: , I'm really sorry, I misread what you had written, I thought you were suggesting removing the article. (As to the question you actually asked, Danski454 below is correct.)
@TornadoLGS: The living persons category should be replaced with the appropriate year of death category as soon as reliable sources report a person's death. Danski454 (talk) 19:30, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question about donations[edit]

Hi I'm curious: since Wikipedia has become a total left-wing propaganda outlet why don't you just cut a deal with the DNC and/or the CCP instead of asking broke Americans for donations? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:40E:4000:18C0:289C:D250:385:332B (talk) 06:28, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia Foundation had revenue of about US $110 million last year and has an endowment of about $58 million. Sure, the pandemic has had an impact, but the WMF can survive just fine without the IP editor's money. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:11, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
May the best sources win. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 07:15, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Strange as it may sound, they also ask people who are not Americans for donations. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:59, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's all part of the coverup. —valereee (talk) 11:31, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I stumbled across Wikipedia coverage of American politics recently - it's an interesting read. GoingBatty (talk) 17:43, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have not seen any evidence of wikipedia being left-wing propaganda. What I have seen is right-wingers complaining about it. Please do not expext it to reflect your views entirely. It should respect all points of vew or better still have no point of view. There has been plenty written on Wikipedia policies and I would be grateful if you would read some of it. Wikipedia should strive for the truth of facts so far as reliable sources allow. I challenge you to name an article which is "left-wing propaganda". I am going to declare my political standpoint which you have not and I respectfully ask you to do so. I am a registered supporter of the British Labour Party and count myself as being a friend of USA, having visited the country on a number of occasions and visited eight of the states (admittedly all on the east coast.) I willingly to pay the wikipedia a small amount (about £10 a year) and I think it worth it to keep the encyclopedia free of advertising and commercial influence. I appreciate that the Foundation need to ask for money sometimes.Spinney Hill (talk) 01:17, 5 December 2020 (UTC).[reply]

These far-right extremists see everything outside an extreme far-right viewpoint as "left-wing propaganda". I can agree that I have never seen any left-wing propaganda, only right-wingers complaining about it. And it's never the other way around. JIP | Talk 13:15, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I note the questioner has not risen to my challenge. He can't find anything or cannot risk being open to a reasoned criticism on something specific. I note that Trump( Jud that is ) lost in the UK Snooker Championship Final last night. Was it stolen? Sorry I shouldnt have said that.Spinney Hill (talk) 10:07, 7 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Template:single chart[edit]

I'd like to build template:single chart for the song "Parle à ta tête", but the parameter appears incorrect as I correctly inserted the SNEP chart to the table. It doesn't work. The Supermind (talk) 07:22, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zaid Shakir[edit]

Dear Sir or Madame, We noticed in the Info box for Zaid Shakir, it is listed Senior Posting for his status. This is incorrect and should be Muslim Leader. Your prompt attention would be greatly appreciate.

Thank you, Saliha Shakir, NID Public Relations — Preceding unsigned comment added by Imzaid (talkcontribs) 07:59, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That is intrinsic to {{Infobox religious biography}} and as far as I can tell it cannot be changed. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 13:47, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Imzaid. Thank you for coming here and asking, rather than trying to change it yourself: you have a conflict of interest, and should not edit the article directly. The previous reply is accurate, but not very helpful to you. That entry "Senior posting" is the heading of a subsection of the infobox, which happens not to be relevant in the case of Shakir. I have raised on Template talk:Infobox religious biography the question of whether the heading can be suppressed if it has no contents, as is the case here. --ColinFine (talk) 23:04, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
ColinFine, by all appearances it can be suppressed, since there are other headers on the template that don't show up in the article. OP wants the header changed, though, not hidden, and as far as I am aware that's not possible barring a consensus to do so. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Takes a strong man to deny... 01:38, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

conflicting user information?[edit]

Does anyone know why global acct info shows me as registering an account in 2013 while user analysis tool shows it as 2006? I've seen this with other accounts, too. —valereee (talk) 11:30, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Valereee, that's wierd, mine match. Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), perhaps? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 12:07, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Valereee, it's most likely something to do with how Global accounts were transferred, that's probably the registration of your global account as they didn't exist until around that time. There's a few articles on MediaWiki.org if you're interested in the technicalities of it. 🎄🎄 Ed talk! 🎄🎄 12:26, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! It was just idle curiosity, really, but I'll check at mediawiki to see if the technicalities are too technical for me. :) —valereee (talk) 12:36, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jack Downer[edit]

Hi , I just submitted a page to be reviewed so it can be published regarding my client Jack Downer.

I wanted to check I submitted it correctly and how long it will take for that to be reviewed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by George Woffenden (talkcontribs) 12:11, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

George Woffenden Draft:Jack Downer was declined on April 5th, and not resubmitted. It was submitted by a different account, was that yours at the time? In addition, you should review the paid editing policy for information on a formal declaration you need to make(you kinda sorta do on your user page but it is not complete). 331dot (talk) 12:14, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Editing the Egidio Marzona page[edit]

On December 1st I edited the Edigio Marzona page, and my edits were approved immediately (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egidio_Marzona).

However, on December 2nd I found two errors in my edit of 1st December(the name of the foundation and the founders). I corrected these mistakes by creating a new Edit on the Edigio Marzona page. However, this edit of 2nd December has not yet been approved:

Is there any way to speed up the approval process, as the edit from 1st December contains mistakes? The page now has a number of "pending reviews". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ugileproni (talkcontribs) 14:25, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Newspapers.com subscription[edit]

My subscription to Newspapers.com thru Wikipedia has been working just fine up until today. Don't know if there is a problem with the service or something at my end I should be doing. Who can help me to get it going again?--Doug Coldwell (talk) 16:43, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WP:LIBRARY is the place. I thought newspapers.com was part of the bundle you get from there. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 16:53, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: Thanks for setting me on the right track. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 20:19, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Doug Coldwell: - take a look at the banner message at WT:Newspapers.com for how to get this renewed. -- Netoholic @ 18:23, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Netoholic: Thanks. Did that and clicked on "Renew" - the message said received and they are processing it now. That probably will do it. Thanks again!--Doug Coldwell (talk) 19:51, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Publishing a Army unit wiki page[edit]

I have created a draft with hope of it being reviewed and submitted but i dont think anyone has. You can find the page under " Draft: 242d Ordnance Battalion (EOD) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Panamenoae (talkcontribs) 18:30, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Panamenoae: The draft (Draft: 242d Ordnance Battalion (EOD)) was not submitted for review. I have added a button to the draft allowing you to submit it for review. Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:40, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But, Panamenoae, before you do any more work on your draft, please read your first article and NORG. What you have written is a page where the unit is telling the world about itself (you even use the word "our"): a Wikipedia article is nothing like that. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.. --ColinFine (talk) 21:13, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal[edit]

I posted an article and an editor took it down as not notable for Wikipedia. How can I appeal this decision? --Robert Adamski (talk) 19:49, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert Adamski: Is this about Draft:Hermandad (non-profit) ‎? Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:03, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If it is about the draft that Victor Schmidt linked, it's still in draftspace and has been declined twice for the same reason: the references used do not demonstrate the subject's suitability for an article. I suggest re-reading the comment Calliopejen1 has supplied after the declination notices. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:11, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You also need to add citations. Everything must be cited. TigerScientist (talk) 01:33, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Placement of audio file[edit]

I'm trying to place an audio file that's coded like this:

{{listen |filename=FILENAME.ogg |title=TITLE |description=DESCRIPTION }}

on the left side of a page. How do I do this? --Dutchy45 (talk) 21:18, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Dutchy45. If you look at Template:Listen, it says it has a parameter pos, which can take values left and right. --ColinFine (talk) 23:12, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks ColinFine, I tried everything but couldn't figure it out. Dutchy45 (talk) 16:36, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You are not independent[edit]

Shame on you as librarians misleading people. Unproffessional. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:249:1080:16D0:C0F8:AAE4:8F87:9C5F (talk) 22:30, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  1. I am not a librarian. No doubt some of the thousands and thousands of volunteer editors you are addressing are librarians, but I'm not.
  2. I am independent.
  3. I am not misleading anybody (at least not intentionally)
  4. I am a volunteer, not a professional. Nonetheless, I hope I am professional in my approach.
  5. Do you have a question about editing Wikipedia? --ColinFine (talk) 23:09, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, IPv6 editor. This is your only post under this IP address. So, if you have an issue, you need to help us understand what it is. Please link to an article, to a bad edit or to some other problem. Otherwise your post just comes over as an impotent rant, and none of us here are mind readers. Nick Moyes (talk) 00:12, 5 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
