User citing their own articles..[edit]

I saw something which seemed slightly suspicious and wanted to see what the WP guideline on it is. Basically, there is an account created today which is inserting content and sources into articles. At first it appeared to be totally ordinary, but upon inspection I realized the name of the author of the articles was the same as the user account - that is, the user is citing their own articles. For the record, these are scientific articles which are being cited. A google search does not reveal any information about the author as far as I can tell. The user account has not made any edits which do not involve inserting the sources they wrote into articles, if that is significant. Is there a guideline on this? Hi, El cid, el campeador. The relevant guideline here is WP:SELFCITE. Basically, yeah, what that account is doing is self-promotion since they're citing only their own work. If they were seeking to improve Wikipedia articles about a topic they know well, they'd surely cite sources from all sorts of authors. An Article Proposed for Deletion.[edit]

Hello, I have recently done an article on Wikipedia but an editor tagged the article for Proposed Deletion citing Notability issues. I addressed the issue by providing relevant sources that make the page notable. This is the 8th day since the PROD Tag has been active, am a little bit stuck cause I don't know the next stage, should I remove the PROD Tag or it's supposed to be the work of an administrator and other editors to remove the PROD Tag. Remember its already 8 days and I have worked on the changes but the PROD Tag is still active. Milliede Any user may remove a PROD tag, as PROD tags are only for deletions expected to be uncontroversial. It's good to give a reason when doing so. Removing the PROD does not prevent someone from starting a full Articles for Deletion discussion, though. 331dot (talk) 10:35, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Milliede', also, PRODed articles aren't automatically deleted 7 days after the tag is added. Once the time is up, it is still checked manually by an admin, who can remove the tag rather than deleting the page, which makes sure there are at least 2 people who agree with the deletion. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 11:19, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Esther Oduola, the page has been renamed. However, if you want the rest of the article replacing with the contents of User talk:Esther Oduola, which I've moved to User:Esther Oduola/draft, then we won't do that. We are an encyclopedia, the purpose of which is to record what reliable, independent sources have written about a subject. Your version is not a neutrally writen encyclopedia article, rather a promotional piece intended to sell the university.

ALIZAMAROM, What is the task you are trying to do when the software presents you with a CAPTCHA? --ColinFine (talk)
ALIZAMAROM, a common mistake (which I myself have made) with CAPTCHA is entering the required characters in the text box and then clicking the "refresh" button next to it – this does not work, because the purpose of "refresh" is to get another character string to re-type when the previous one was too difficult for the user to read.
Instead, one has to type the characters as required, and then scroll down and click the "Publish changes" button.
Also, I notice you have typed your query in ALL CAPITALS. Apart from this generally being interpreted as SHOUTING, and therefore rude, on the internet, this might not work with CAPTCHA, which might require lower case (I don't know for sure as I've never tried to use ALL CAPS in a CAPTCHA myself). Is there any other way to upload it to finish the page?

I use Wikipedia for research as a Vetting process. Wikipedia articles are created by volunteers, who have a tendency to create articles about topics that interest them. It's likely that no one has created an article about Gladys Magazine because no one thought to do so. If you think Gladys Magazine meets the requirements for something to have an article, feel free to start a draft, or visit requested articles to make a request. Request for undeletion[edit]

ello, I’d like to request that the article on Bob Quaranta be undeleted. It has existed for about 10 years without incident and new information, such as recording credits is always being added. Google even used a snippet of the bio for their Bob Quaranta mini profile. A notice was placed on the article that it needed resources. I fully intended to do that and have been compiling them. I just didn’t have the time to get to it before the article was deleted. I should mention that when the tag was originally placed on the article, I removed it but I was fully intending to follow up on the resourcing. The tag was soon replaced with a warning not to remove it and I left it alone. A week later the article was deleted. I looked at the reasons why but they didn’t appear valid and was wondering if the deletion was a punishment for removing the tag. I think an administrator’s job is to make sure an article is presented correctly, not to make a value judgement on the validity of the information. Valuable to who? It may not be valuable to a given administrator but it may have value to people interested in this person’s participation in musical styles such as Latin Jazz and Salsa. Bob Quaranta also is mentioned in other Wiki articles: “Just Visiting This Planet” by Jellybean, “Cosas del Alma” studio album by Adalberto Santiago, Ed Palermo Big Band. All the information in the article such as recording credits, grammy nominations and record chart positions is all verifiable. I’d be very great full if you would restore the article and I will get right to the resourcing. As for the original deletion, the article is about a living person. As an article about a living person, it is extremely important (more so than for other articles) that all information be verifiable, i.e. adequately sourced. The proposed deletion for biographies of living persons process requires that a source be provided at the time the deletion tag is removed, otherwise the article is subject to deletion in 7 days after the tag is applied. This is an attempt to prevent damaging the reputations of living people by keeping unverifiable information about them around. Hello, Nataliebrem. Wikipedia has no concept of an "official photo". Any photo may be used in a Wikipedia article as long as
  1. It meets Wikipedia's criteria for copyright. This normally means that it is either in the public domain (usually because it is a very old photo), or the copyright holder has explicitly released it under a suitable licence. Most images on the Internet are not free in this sense. In limited cases, non-free images may be used, but Wikipedia is much stricter than most sites about this: see NFCC; and
  2. a consensus of editors agree that the image is appropriate in the article. Like everywhere else, Wikipedia works by consensus, and no single editor has an overriding power to say that something does or does not belong in an article. (And especially, the subject of an article, and people associated with that subject, do not have that power).

I've stuck a bare url in there for now. The reference had a garbled URL, was using the title from a totaly differt website and amongst other things was a right pigs ear. [[]] I would like to add info on my father who was a very popular Restaurateur (and President of the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington, DC as well as President of the Epicurean Club of DC) who owned and operated 6 restaurants in DC.

Ray S Walters 11/3/1910 – 1/29/1991 Born in Paris, TN and raised with 7 siblings in Paducah, KY. Ray started his Restaurant career at the age of 18 at Child’s Restaurant in Chicago, IL. Over the years, Ray worked his way up from being a Porter, Busboy, Waiter, Dishwasher, Salad boy, Chef’s Assistant, Chef, Kitchen Manager and finally Restaurant Manager. Child’s transferred him to different cities where he managed the opening of their new restaurants. After he opened the new Child’s Restaurant in Washington, D.C., Ray opened his own restaurant, “The Loop” in Mt. Pleasant, N.W. Washington, D.C.

That was the first of 6 restaurants he and his wife Anna and son Ratus owned and operated in Washington.

Ray went on to becoming President of The Washington Restaurant Association for several years and then, the first American born President of the Epicurean Club of Washington, D.C. Again, serving as President for several years.

The Walters family restaurants included “The Loop”, “Napoleons”, “Café de la Paix”, “The Seagull”, “Café Burgundy” and his son’s super club, “Ray Walters’ STABLES”.

Ray S Walters received many honors including Restaurateur of the Year.

Ray met his wife Anna in 1929 while they both worked at Child’s in Chicago. Anna, at 17, was showcased in a picture window as she cooked (flipped) flapjacks, attracting customers. They married in 1931. Anna passed away in 2000.

Question on the Fascism Page[edit]

I had a questions about the Fascism. First, I am coming from complete sincerity and and respect for all the work that Wikipedia has done and all the help it has proved to millions of people.

I have been doing some research on fascism with everything that is going along in the political world of the US and the talks about fascism. I came across some pretty interesting articles and books on fascism and it's association with the progressive. In particular from John P. Diggins who is, "American professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, Princeton University, and Director of the City University of New York Graduate Center." (Wikipedia). In one of his articles titles, "Flirtation with Fascism: American Pragmatic Liberals and Mussolini's Italy" He quotes Democratic Congressmen Milford W. Howard saying:

"This is the day of pragmatism, not dogmatism - of realism, but a realism that can also be rich in spiritual ideals, and I want to go on record at the beginning of this unpretentious book by avowing my faith in Benito Mussolini, Italy's great premier, and Fascism, the child of his marvelous brain, as the highest expression of pragmatic philosophy of government whose invariable formula is: Does it work?"

Diggins goes on in the article describing many Left leaning intellectuals and leaders having respect and desiring for fascism in the United States. Diggins also wrote a book called "Mussolini and Fascism: The View from America." I have not read the book yet but from what I can tell is that there was a good amount of desire from progressives to institute fascism in America in the early 20s and 30s.

What I am asking is the possibility of a section on the fascism page about the influence that it had on so many people in America in the 20s and 30s. Wikipedia is about information and knowledge and I think this is an important part of our American History. I am not saying fascism is left or right on the political scale. All I am saying is that as a society we need to know our history and this is apart of the American history.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Wikipedia is feeding Google info...how to correct?[edit]

In googling my company (Rocky Vista University), it pulls up a list of "Notable Alumni," which includes entirely incorrect information. I called Google about removing this, but they said the information is actually coming from Wikipedia. I looked through our listing but can't find anything to do with alumni on our page. Can you tell me where this info might be originating from within Wikipedia? As well as how to remove/edit it?

Sorry, but we do not know where Google would get this information from. They compile information from throughout the internet and often display it in a way that implies it comes from Wikipedia. As you say there is no 'alumni' section at Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and it is impossible to say how Google would find it. Wikipedia has no control over what Google displays and it does occasionally cause issues. There is a feedback link at the bottom of the panel in the Google results page but wouldn't like to say how effective this may be. Eagleash (talk) 22:56, 27 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The only part copied directly from Wikipedia is the text paragraph which ends "Wikipedia". See more at our stock reply Template:HD/GKG However, I noticed Google's list of alleged alumni matches Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine#Notable alumni. I guess Google's software thinks Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine sound similar enough to assume they are part of the same college and show alumni from the latter when Rocky Vista University is searched. Wikipedia is not responsible for this, and we are not going to remove alumni from Michigan State University just because Google may use it in a wrong way. The two articles link to eachother because they both display Template:Osteopathic medical schools, and they are both linked in Category:Osteopathic medical schools in the United States. This may also influence Google but it's all standard Wikipedia practice and not something we will change. I'm sorry for the confusion Google creates but we cannot redesign our encyclopedia every time an external site does something bad with valid information from us. And Google's algorithms are secret anyway so we might have to make a change, wait to se whether Google changes, make another change, and so on. I checked Wikidata items for both schools and found nothing out of place there either. It's a Google bug. Whoever at Google that said they were getting it from the Wikipedia article for Rocky Vista didn't actually look at that article, since it has no alumni list. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:57, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The poster only said: "I called Google about removing this, but they said the information is actually coming from Wikipedia". It doesn't say which Wikipedia article. The Google search links the Rocky Vista article but only after a text paragraph at the start. It doesn't mean that any of the later information is from that or any Wikipedia article. Help with First Article. The Fish need you![edit]

Hello I've written my first article. I have ensured to try and make it well written, with several sources obtained using Google scholar and days of research. The problem is getting appropriate images. I've been able to find a really good image that is on wikipedia commons, and a second that I'm not quite as sure of but still confident in it's usage. Yet I have issues implementing them into my article. Hello, TheDarkMaster2. To add c:File:Gramma dejongi.JPG to the taxobox, you simply replace the value of the image parameter with the name of the file, without the brackets or File:, but with the full filename (preserving case), thus:
image = Gramma dejongi.JPG
(Sorry, TheDarkMaster2, accidentally published my answer incomplete). As for the second image, provided that it is licenced by the copyright holder appropriately, you can upload it to Commons: see Help:Upload. Why do you think that this image is free to use? It was stated by one of the websites to be fair use. Plus an image of this morph is HIGHLY needed. Not only for it's distinct appearance, but also for the fact that it is one of the few Marine Fish color breeds, and the first color morph of The Basslet family and genus to be bred.TheDarkMaster2 (talk) 00:15, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid that "stated to be fair use" is not enough, TheDarkMaster2. Wikipedia's equivalent of "fair use" is "non-free content", which is only allowed in very restricted circumstances, detailed in NFCC - the one that usually rules it out is that there must be no reasonable chance of obtaining a free image of the subject. We require that the copyright holder explicitly license the image under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, which will allow anybody to reuse it for any purpose: see DCM. Unfortunately this means that many articles lack pictures that would be improved by adding them if a suitably licensed one could be found. --ColinFine (talk) 01:10, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
