New user reviewing[edit]

Are there any user review tools like Snuggle? I'm asking this because it appears to have been down for over a year, with no one maintaining it, and I'd like to be able to review and welcome new users faster than through the user creation log. TK421bsod (talk) 03:22, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is editing as an IP more anonymous than editing from an account?[edit]

An IP over at Race and Intelligence said this. I always thought having an account hid you more, because then only admins or whatever could look at your IP. But if you're an IP then everyone sees your IP. Are there any reasons why you might be more hidden with an IP? They did mention they don't like cookies. Peregrine Fisher, As far as I'm aware; checkusers only have access to IP address and useragent (essentailly browser and OS), and occasionally x-forward-for if set up.

They can't access cookies or anything, although cookies are used when a user is blocked with autoblock set to prevent a user with a dynamic IP registering a new account - although this isn't a particularly fool proof method, as they could just delete their cookies. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 13:29, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I suppose there is always the argument that creating an account might be more likely to give away information about yourself, rather than using a dynamic IP address. Administrators cannot see IPs related to accounts. Checkusers can, but they are thoroughly vetted and have to sign agreements to keep information confidential. 331dot (talk) 11:07, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The IP might be looking at it from the "privacy" perspective of an account being a continuous known identity (and thus all actions from that account being known), whereas IP addresses can change. Schazjmd (talk) 15:40, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why are there so many American radio subjects on the 'Did you know' section of the main page?[edit]

I was just wondering how the subjects for the 'Did you know' section of the main page are selected?. Specifically, why are there so many entries related to American radio stations? There seems to be a disproportionate number of entries related to this subject, to the point that I have noticed a pattern even as a casual Wikipedia user. It used to be waterways in Pennsylvania. Before that, it was Gibraltar-related topics. There's a complicated process involved in getting an article accepted for "Did you know"; and once an editor has learned how to operate that, they may be tempted to do so repeatedly. Every DYK is nominated by a user (they have to be expanded or created shortly before nomination). You'll find certain users (myself included) regularly nominate articles, and these could well be on a particular subject that the user works frequently on. (If you ever see them on cue sports for example, it's likely one of mine.) Full rules can be seen at WP:DYK, but there is a long vetting process involved with getting an article on DYK. Page Deletion[edit]

Who is Jdvai333? Doesn't have an account here. Also, uploading logos is a complicated business. Special copyright laws apply to such logos. To do so, you'd need to upload it to Wikipeda (not WikiCommons), upload the lowest resolution reasonable, and specifically tag it for the appropriate fair use criteria (please read WP:NFCC). As it'll be a logo used under fair use provisions, you can either ask at Wikipedia:Files for upload - easy, but it'll be a while before a volunteer does it, or fill in a {{Non-free use rationale logo}} and use Special:Upload. If you know what you're doing already, this is the best option.

Line up numbers[edit]

In List_of_active_coal_fired_power_stations_in_Turkey#Active_coal_fired_power_stations_in_Turkey is there a way I can make the numbers in the "Capacity" column line up properly please? I mean as it sorts properly presumably the software knows it is numeric so why is it not automatically right justified? Chidgk1 (talk) 17:19, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You can add align="right"| before the relevant numbers i.e. for the first capacity change "|320" to "|align="right"|320", which mostly does what I think that you want but the citations screw it up - maybe just move them to the notes column? Mikenorton (talk) 19:42, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Security[edit]

You are not logged in, so there is no "account" to hack. Your ISP reassigns IP addresses occasionaly, so you are seeing messages that are intended for earlier or other users who have been assigned that IP address in the past. Ignore them. You will be better served by actually creating an account and logging in. You may use a pseudonym and you do not need to divulge any information about yourself, so editors have less information then whey you use an IP address, not more. -Arch dude (talk) 19:15, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As an example, I know that the Internet router that provided your IP address in in Middleton, New Jersey, USA. This is public knowledge available to anyone and has nothing to do with Wikipedia. Need help with the css selector for the editing area[edit]

@Ineuw: You have conflicting code in User:Ineuw/common.css. common.css runs in all skins. vector.css only runs when Vector is selected at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:15, 7 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia censorship[edit]

There is no censorship- but you will not be allowed to claim that her name is now "Susan Trump". We cover what independent reliable sources say, not what random people want to say. You are free to call Senator Collins what you wish on social media.
