Restoring a Deleted Article - What to Do About Redirect

This is about Draft:Ammar Campa-Najjar. There was a BLP of this person. It was then deleted pursuant to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ammar Campa-Najjar (2nd nomination) and redirected to2018 United States House of Representatives elections in California. A deletion review endorsed the deletion and noted that the article could be restored if there was new information to establish general notability. The subject does not currently satisfy political notability. There has recently been discussion to the effect that the draft should now be accepted. However, there is currently a redirect, and the redirect says that it is a redirect with history and should not be deleted. What can be done to accept the draft? The usual AFC script will not accept the draft if there is a redirect at the title. Is human action needed? If so, where do I request the human action? @Robert McClenon: I think at that you can place your request at Wikipedia:Requested_moves/Technical_requests. If necessary, a history merge of the redirect and the new article can be done. RudolfRed (talk) 00:36, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Thank you, User:RudolfRed. I requested that. A history merge is required, or at least the redirect says it has history and should not be deleted. Getting load-time metrics for a script

I'm currently working on my own anti-vandal tool, and was wondering where I could ask for people to measure how fast it loads? It's usually under half a second for me (After loading it for the first time. If the cache is empty it takes about 2 sec), but I imagine it varies across machines. --MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) Should short descriptions include vital years?

I have been adding short descriptions, and improving (I hope) existing ones. I was under the impression there was a guideline that the short description for a biographical article should include the vital years, or year of birth - but I can't find it documented anywhere. But some of my changes have been reverted, claiming this made the short description too long. So now I'm not sure whether to include them or not. Can anybody please point me to whether there is such a guideline (or did I just imagine it)? --Gronk Oz (talk) 07:45, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Gronk Oz, The guidelines are at Wikipedia:Short description (perhaps other guidelines exist, but I've never run across them and couldn't find more). My reading has always been that you should aim for no longer than 40 characters, and that otherwise the guidelines say fairly little. I dont understand what is required. I checked the source and each of the notes mentioned about this person has a citation.

The notice is not about lack of citations, it's about copyright violation. Specifically, it claims that some part of the article may be a copyright violation of https://www.weaa.org/people/karsonya-wise-whitehead#stream/0 . I'm not seeing that myself; you could take it up with the editor who placed the notice, Souravdas1998.   Maproom (talk) 09:31, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Geographical databases question

Hello all- I have been doing work on obscure geographical terms in southern Xinjiang making use primarily of the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China's index of minor locations and of GEOnet Names Server in conjunction with old maps, news articles, books and scholarly papers. Gallery perrow oddity

On c:File:I Wrote a Full Song in 24_Hours-K7r58jQqK8I00227.png and on 18 other images derived from one video the other versions gallery works as expected, four "Blackery with guitar" in one row for a total of five related images in this subset, with a perrow=4 gallery parameter. On enwiki the perrow=4 fails for File:I Wrote a Full Song in 24_Hours-K7r58jQqK8I00227.png and for me, what is the problem, is it only me, does it work for you?

Autoreviewer

In the Portuguese Wikipedia, I'm already a rollbacker and eliminator/deleter (pt.wiki only, basically you can delete and restore pages, and it has the autopatrol function). With that information, is it possible to request Autoreviewer here? GhostP. ^talk 16:15, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Question of curiosity: least read articles on Wikipedia

Is there any way to find the least popular or least read article on English Wikipedia? By whatever definition we might have. I would assume "fewest number of views for the most extended time" (or something like that). And, if not the least popular, how about a list of the "bottom grouping"? Thanks. Joseph A. The pageview data is available here but as far as I can see no one has ever made a "least popular" report from it. I for one think this would be very interesting (but might be full of zero view pages). I don't think this would be WP:BEANS-y since the majority of our pages are unpopular and are only overseen by recent changes patrollers anyways. @West.andrew.g, do you think it would be worth it to assemble a one-off report on this? – Thjarkur (talk) 20:39, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

The long tail is looooong. I can probably run a report for 2019, although it is likely too long to share in Wikipedia format when we consider articles with <10 or <100 views. What is the use-case? Can we move this to the talk page of WP:5000 or WP:Top_25_Report? I also see the WP:BEANS potential here, as watchlister counts are proportional to views, but at the same time, vandalism that no one sees has minimal impact (soapbox: see my prior research, massive traffic pages are a far greater vulnerability if we measure vandalism impact by viewership). But, as I said, I want to know there is some utility here before I dedicate time to custom reports. West.andrew.g (talk) 01:58, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

@West.andrew.g: Thanks. No, this list is not something that I "need". It was just a question of curiosity, as my header indicates. I thought it might already exist somewhere here on Wikipedia. In which case, I would have liked to take a look at it. But, if this is a big project and a lot of work/effort ... no, it is not that important. Like I said, I certainly don't "need" it. Same here, no real utility apart from curiosity. I gave up on making this report for another smaller wiki where I wanted to clean up the unread junk articles and find unintegrated walled gardens, but of course those junk articles aren't really hurting anyone since no one's reading them. – Thjarkur (talk) 15:03, 20 January 2020 (UTC)

Technical problem with SVG file

Even after years of editing Wikipedia, I wasn't sure where to post this; let me know if there's some more technically-oriented board to ask this question. I'm trying to upload to Commons a more accurate version of File:RosettaStoneAsPartOfOriginalStele.svg, before an article in which it appears runs as TFA on January 24. When I try, I get an error message:

"<a> elements can only link (href) to data: (embedded file), http:// or https://, or fragment (#, same-document) targets. For other elements, such as <image>, only data: and fragment are allowed. Try embedding images when exporting your SVG. Found <image http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink:href="2974d5a2d85405a5.jpg">

I've asked about this problem on Commons' help desk, but nobody has responded so far. I'm guessing that the error is related to the JPG image of the Rosetta Stone embedded within the SVG (I did not edit the JPG when revising the image), but I don't understand the error message beyond that. @A. Parrot: your SVG file contains a link to an external URL, and that is (apparently) not allowed, probably due to potential for copyright violations. to cure this you will need to modify the SVG file so that it actually includes the image itself, not a link to it. How you do this will depend on your SVG creation software. Whether to do this at all depends on the copyright status of the image. -Arch dude (talk) 17:26, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

It does, but the uploaders seem to have extracted it from the European Space Agency page and declared it public domain while doing so, on the grounds that the stone itself is public domain. The stone's etched text makes its surface not entirely two-dimensional, which means photos of that surface are technically copyrightable. It shouldn't be a problem, but I've had to worry about the copyright status of so many photos of ancient artwork over the years. A. Parrot (talk) 18:49, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

SVGs with embedded raster files are generally problematic on commons: Users incl. other MediaWiki projects (per InstantCommons) should be able to download and use the SVG without further difficulties: No external links loading tracking pixels or causing havoc in offline scenarios, no giant SVGs with raster files in a data URI, no weird scripts for animations (personal opinions, the policies allow more), etc. Also see lots(!) of SVG help + project files on commons. –84.46.53.192 (talk) 19:05, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

@A. Parrot: The URL in the original complaint message was not the Rosetta stone or anything else on Commons: it was a URL at www.w3.org. This means it was likely something your SVG editor added for some obscure reason of its own. @A. Parrot: I can't say without looking at the .svg file source. My speculation is that the www.w3.org URL is unrelated to the image and is elsewhere in the file. If it were not a .jpg, I would guess it was an svg namespace declaration. Examine the source with a text editor and see what you can make of it. -Arch dude (talk) 22:08, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Hello, IP user. The English Wikipedia and the Malagasy Wikipedia are entirely separate projects, with no influence over each other. Unless by chance there happens to be an editor here who also edits the Malagasy Wikipedia, there is nobody here who has any knowledge of it. You'll need to ask there, I'm afraid. OK, worked round it, by changing the ISO639 3-letter code to the 2-letter one. But it's a bug in {{lang}}: a warning message is appearing where it shouldn't. I will raise it on the template talk page.  Done --ColinFine (talk) 22:12, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

To induce an editor to actually change the Bruny Island article instead of adding a "citation needed" tag, you will need to find a published source (see WP:RS) that has your information in it.
