In the 17th century section of this page I have failed when trying to add this photo / file from commons - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:St._John_the_Baptist_Church,_Adel,_Leeds#/media/File:Adel_Church_-_KMB_-_16001000127804.jpg

@Srbernadette: Looks like you forgot to log out when editing your post at 10:09! You have posted a link to a category; not certain which image you require? As advised on previous occasions, if you go to the desired image you will find a pre-formatted link to use on Wikipedia pages. Also, as advised dozens of times, please do not start new threads with the same heading. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 10:25, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - here is the image - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:St._John_the_Baptist_Church,_Adel,_Leeds#/media/File:Adel_Church_-_KMB_-_16001000127804.jpg

It is also exactly the same as this image - File:Adel Church - KMB - 16001000127804.jpg

Please have as a caption underneath the file - Francis and Esther Lupton married at Adel Church in 1688 Thanks as always Srbernadette (talk) 10:35, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried again and now because of my computer I think, the size of the file is way too big and I cannot put the caption I would like underneath it; the caption is - Francis and Esther Lupton married at Adel Church in 1688
  • Following merged from later section

User: Eagleash

Dear Sir - thanks for being patient. Please see my above entry RE the Lupton family - the file is now HUGE and I am so sorry that I am often hopeless at this. Please read my request again if you don't mind and can do so - thanks 10:42, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

@Srbernadette:  Fixed You need to add the filename then a pipe, then 'thumb' then another pipe, then your caption followed by the closing square brkts. I have added the caption as per your earlier request. Eagleash (talk) 11:05, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How does one do the notify a project about a particular thing?[edit]

How does one notify a project about a particular thing? I have been noticing thing like Notified: So and so project, on some discussion boards, but how is it done? Aceing_Winter_Snows_Harsh_Cold (talk) 02:06, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aceing Winter Snows Harsh Cold: I'm going to assume this is about the post you made at Talk:Timeline of the 2019–20 coronavirus outbreak in February 2020#Splitting proposal. You want to notify one of the projects listed as being relevant at the top of that talk page, say WP:WikiProject China. If I click on that link, I see it is organized like most projects, and the talk page is at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject China. I go to that talk page and add a new section called "Input requested at Timeline of the 2019%E2%80%9320 coronavirus outbreak in February 2020", with content:
Hello all. I've started a conversation at [[Talk:Timeline of the 2019%E2%80%9320 coronavirus outbreak in February 2020#Splitting proposal]]. Input from members of this project is requested. Thanks! ~~~~
I hope this helps. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:43, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit labels on the x-axis of Template:Graph:Chart[edit]

I'm having trouble adjusting the display of the x-axis on a chart I'm trying to create. Here is what it looks like (wikicode is here - click "preview" to see the result). The labels on the bottom all run together. I know I could fix the problem by increasing the number in the "width" field, but I'd like to avoid that. Instead I'd like to remove all 1Q, 2Q, and 3Q labels so that only the 4Q labels show. I've experimented with replacing 1Q, 2Q, and 3Q entries with a blank space but they seem to be bundling all y coordinates to a single spot on the x axis (namely the first place I used the blank space value on the x axis). What I'm hoping for is something similar to the <span style="display:none"> script that I used to use regularly in tables before it was deprecated. Is this possible? -Thibbs (talk) 02:51, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK I found a truly ugly trick to make it work using the Mongolian Vowel Separator (U+180E). I worry that people without full unicode access will see it as nothing but "" replacement characters, though... I'd still appreciate any suggestions for a better solution! -Thibbs (talk) 05:29, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

G8 for talk pages with no corresponding subject page: time factor?[edit]

When an editor wishes to first make a talk page, prior to the actual article, why doesn't WP:CSD#G8 have a time factor?

The case of "user subpages when the user has not created a user page" is on the list of tolerated exceptions- more than just tolerated, it is part of what is called "any page that is useful to Wikipedia."

The purpose of this Help Desk entry is to

  • ask that the talk page for Peter de Jager be undeleted
  • ask that a discussion of a 48 or even 72 hour window of time be added to the "useful to wikipedia" criteria for CSD#G8 for talk/no article (yet). (and please indicate here where to follow said discussion) Pi314m (talk) 06:26, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Pi314m, An admin may come along to do your first question, but wp:refund will probably get you a faster response. For your second point, that is more the domain of WT:CSD or Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals); as this page is archived frequently it isn't really suitable to detailed policy debates. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 08:01, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Creatne page needs editing[edit]

I have been doing research on creatine manufacturing and distribution and I have evidence that another manufacturer was first to market. How do I edit the creatine page? I want also to include the first label used for commercial creatine in the body of the text, which I now have permission to reprint. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.37.214.50 (talk) 06:37, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. One of the fundamental principles of Wikipedia is that everything needs to have been published, so that a reader can in principle get hold of it to check (even if that means going to a major library). If you can find a reliable published source that says that somebody marketed Creatine before EAS, you can add that information to the article Creatine. But you cannot put unpublished information into an article: that would be WP:original research.
As for the label: probably not. "Permission" is not usually relevant, as Wikipedia requires that material be free for anybody to reuse for any purpose. This means that the copyright holder must explicitly release the material under a suitable licence such as CC-BY-SA see donating copyright materials. In any case, even if the copyright owner licensed the label and you uploaded it, you could add it to the article as an illustration, but could not rely on it as a reference unless it had been published elsewhere.
Finally, please do not post the same question in different places. --ColinFine (talk) 14:33, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Title for pop group "=LOVE"[edit]

In Japan, there's a pop group named =LOVE (ja) that I'm trying to write an English article about. The group name is usually pronounced "equal love" but is never written that way. I've read WP:TMRULES and WP:TSC but I'm still not quite sure what the English title should be. Is it "=LOVE"? "Equal Love"? "Equal LOVE"?   Ganbaruby!  (talk to me) 07:54, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'll probably get around to this one later, so along the same vein, what would ≠ME (ja) be? It's pronounced "not equal me".   Ganbaruby!  (talk to me) 07:57, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If they are only known under this stylization in secondary sources, then WP:COMMONNAME is usually considered more important than WP:TMRULES (see for example the last move request on Sunn O)))). I would just start the article using the stylization, someone can then later propose another title. – Thjarkur (talk) 15:45, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to comment on a Wikipedia article[edit]

There is an error on the Wikipedia article anout Travis Alexander regarding birth and death dates. I wrote a long paragraph about it and suddenly the whole piece disappeared and I was unable to access that page again. Lulu3601 (talk) 08:06, 1 March 2020 (UTC)LULU3601[reply]

Hello, Lulu3601. I can't find any evidence that you have ever edited Murder of Travis Alexander. Did your session fail when you tried to "Publish changes"? --ColinFine (talk) 14:38, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia = Political Bias[edit]

Can't trust Wikipedia. Unfortunately. Compared info on Washington Times vs Washington Post. Looking for facts ONLY, found personal opinions instead. Blatant, obvious bias. Relegates Wikipedia to the CNN fake news league. Shame on us. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:6000:EECE:8200:7963:5B11:8800:3D4A (talk) 08:41, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for you opinion. However, Wikipedia depends on verification of facts from reliable sources, rather than personal opinions. Do you have any for your claim? HiLo48 (talk) 09:22, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You'll be glad to know that Wikipedia agrees with you, see Wikipedia:General disclaimer. However, that is info from Wikipedia, so it may be unreliable. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 10:27, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia does not claim to be a reliable source and does not claim to be free of bias. Wikipedia just summarizes what independent reliable sources state and allows the reader to view those sources to judge them for themselves. Any bias in sources will be reflected in Wikipedia. If you have your own independent reliable sources, please offer them- though what an article states should reflect a consensus among editors and what sources in general are stating. Wikipedia does not give equal time to all points of view, coverage depends on the sources. If this is not your cup of tea, you are free to find a project that is more compatible with your personal views. 331dot (talk) 10:55, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Your problem is not with Wikipedia but with the entire body of global journalism, which is united in regarding the Times as a much less reliable, much more biased and partisan publication than the Post with nothing to recommend it. Our articles simply reflect this consensus. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:52, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Shokotownes: If you have improvements or changes you wish to see made to Tabea Blumenschein, please raise the issues at the article's talk page. Please provide reliable sources. Please sign your posts at talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 09:53, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can you find reliable sources to say she died? I had a very quick look and couldn't, and German wiki also has her as alive. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:29, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The article as it stands is barely more than a stub, is poorly written (in terms of both language and structure), has only one reference, and does not seem to me to establish the subject's notability.
Regardless of the issue raised by new user @Shokotownes: (whose attempt to add it to the article today plus their query here are their only contributions thus far), it is sorely in need of improvement, although I myself am hesitant to nominate it for deletion just yet. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.200.142.153 (talk) 21:48, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Street addresses and contact information in articles about organisations[edit]

As I understand, WP:NOTDIR prohibits aggregate lists of such information. But is there mention in the MOS or other guideline regarding the appropriateness of listing street addresses and contact information (apart from online links, which are covered by WP:EL) in articles about organisations? --Paul_012 (talk) 14:27, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware of a specific policy other than those you mention, but since up-to-date contact details will be available from the organization's official website, I can't think of any reason why it would be necessary to include it in the article. The town in which they are based could be included if it is relevant.--Shantavira|feed me 14:41, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Submit Bob Quaranta to WP:AfC[edit]

Hi, I've completed referencing and external link edits and I'm trying to submit Bob Quaranta article to WP:AfC as per administrator's instructions. Not sure how to do this, although researching it. Appreciate any assistance. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dontwantone (talkcontribs) 15:34, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have submitted this on your behalf. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 15:39, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Conspiracy Theories related to an article[edit]

When is it appropriate to include, or exclude, references to conspiracy theories related to an article subject? I have been looking at the Sonny Bono#Death article, and it references a conspiracy theory about his death. The mention of the theory is not well written. I was wondering if I should revise it, or drop the reference completely. Are there any Wikipedia standards on the matter? OvertAnalyzer (talk) 17:25, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@OvertAnalyzer: I'd say it requires significant coverage in RS, like anything else. If multiple RS run articles over multiple days about it, I'd say it has traction. Sadly, our world has turned into a mess of stupid people making money by saying/writing stupid things that other stupid people love to consume. We shouldn't feed the fire. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 20:07, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pings[edit]

Hello,
When I start a discussion somewhere whether it's on a user talk page or a forum somewhere, I expect people to ping me when they respond. Unlike other users, I don't use my watchlist at all. I rely on pings to bring me to messages when people respond. I tried placing a note at the end of my message to ping me, but people don't always do it. What is the best way to tell someone to ping me when they respond to a message without being rude? Don't forget to ping me when you respond. Interstellarity (talk) 20:16, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Interstellarity, realistically, given the blink tag is sadly disabled here, I'm not sure what more you can do other than adding it to your signature. You could place something like using {{bcc|Interstellarity}} with your message if you think that users aren't because they don't know how. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 20:40, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Alex Noble: Can you show me how to add it to my signature? Interstellarity (talk) 20:53, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You add it here within "Special:Preferences". -- Hoary (talk) 06:58, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It would be a good idea to use a watchlist. I am a reasonably experienced editor and don't know what pinging is or how to do it. There may be lots of editors in the same position. Is it a US expression not used in UK and maybe other English speaking countries. Furthermore I would have thought vandals are unlikely to ping you so you may find your edits are vandalised without you knowing.Spinney Hill (talk) 10:25, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hoary: What kind of code would I use to add it to my signature? @Spinney Hill: Info on pinging can be found at Template:Ping. I think I might consider using a watchlist in the future. Interstellarity (talk) 11:38, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Spinney Hill: I have thereby pinged you, though I normally use Template:U instead. The verb ping appears to be used in Blighty. "[P]inged him a message": metro.co.uk. "[T]he message the former SNP Finance Secretary pinged him": the-gazette.co.uk. ¶ Interstellarity, perhaps add Please put "{{U|Interstellarity}}" somewhere within your reply. It's cumbersome; people are unlikely to thrill to instructions to take special measures just for you; and, as Spinney Hill points out, it won't alert you when silly people tamper with articles that interest you. So just use the watchlist. -- Hoary (talk) 12:53, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: I'll just use my watchlist from now on. Interstellarity (talk) 13:52, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wise choice, Interstellarity! - Hoary (talk) 13:57, 2 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, I do not know what ping means, and I suppose there must be many others like me. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 05:08, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ping: verb: transitive verb: 3c: Now you do know, BeenAroundAWhile! -- Hoary (talk) 06:07, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Very helpful. Thanks. So it means "to send a usually brief message (such as a text message) or notification to (a person, a person's phone, etc.)." Terrific. It's too true that I've BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 06:22, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, pretty much. I believe that the word comes from the networking utility named "ping", whose creator, says that article, "named it after the sound that sonar makes, since its methodology is analogous to sonar's echo location." -- Hoary (talk) 06:37, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Global Cooling[edit]

“ Recent mapping of a number of raised beach ridges on the north coast of Greenland suggests that the ice cover in the Arctic Ocean was greatly reduced some 6000-7000 years ago. The Arctic Ocean may have been periodically ice free.”
