March 14[edit]

My posting split prev posting and its refs in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Viking_ships[edit]

Happens to me all the time (why?); sorry for the inconvenience and thanks in advance for any help :) T 85.166.161.28 (talk) 00:48, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't your fault. The section with references was missing {{reflist-talk}}. Fixed in [1]. Without this, the references will just be displayed at the bottom of the page. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:55, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thx a lot! Sigh of relief. T 85.166.161.28 (talk) 01:54, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I need to change the name of the editor to Jordan P. Ingram. However, when I change it, the name of the old editor keeps populating the staff box. Please help so we can update our newspaper. Help me change the name of the editor from Abraham Jewett to Jordan P. Ingram — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrdn2020 (talkcontribs) 02:14, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jrdn2020: I reverted your edit since it was malformed and caused problems. I also removed the name of the old editor, since I could not find a reference for it. I did not add the name of the new editor, since I could not find a reference for that, either. Please provide a reference. Please read your talk page for additional issues. -Arch dude (talk) 02:42, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to delete an article?[edit]

I recently found an article I don't think is about a topic that is important. How can I delete it? --Jirangmoon (talk) 04:23, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jirangmoon: If you think your assessment is uncontroversial, use the {{Prod}} process. If anyone objects to your prod (by removing the template) then proceed to WP:AFD it initiate a formal deletion discussion. -Arch dude (talk) 06:04, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request for split[edit]

Why is The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs still listed under MonsterVision? This show has led to a serious revival in Mr. B'Briggs's' career, and it is currently renewed for a second season, with 4 specials. Please give Joe Bob his own page!

Cheers — Preceding unsigned comment added by 8.46.75.78 (talk) 04:39, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user. The answer to a question "Why does Wikipedia not have an article on ...?" is nearly always "Because nobody has written one". Often it is also "Because the topic does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability". Unless a topic is notable (roughly, that several people completely unconnected to the topic have chosen to write at some length about the topic and been published in reliable places) no article will be accepted. So, if you can find the necessary sources about Briggs, then there could be an article, which you could write (though it is difficult: see your first article). Alternatively, you could start a discussion on the talk page Talk:MonsterVision, presenting your sources and inviting somebody else to create the article. --ColinFine (talk) 09:59, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia has had an article on Joe Bob Briggs since 2004. The Last Drive-In is covered in the MonsterVision article. Deor (talk) 05:36, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In the file/photo at the top of the page of the interior of the chapel, could you please place two small dots over the letter "o" in the name Noel Middleton which appears twice in the caption underneath the church photo/file. Please also DIRCETLY link up the link in the caption - "Mrs Noel Middleton" - to the section titled Olive Middleton née Lupton on the Lupton family page. Thanks for doing both of these 2 things which I have failed to do successfully. Thanks 175.32.219.132 (talk) 05:12, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I did the wikilink but not the ö, since no other Noel on that page had it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:56, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Where the diaeresis is used in English to separate two vowel letters, it appears over the second letter, not the first. So that form of the name Noel is Noël, not Nöel (see Noel (given name)). However, it is rarely used for that name, and should not be used unless ther is evidence that that particular person normally spells it that way. --ColinFine (talk) 10:05, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, like Noël Coward. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:02, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata/infobox[edit]

The infobox for Wavemaker (media agency) says it was founded in 2017, as defined in the infobox. It also says defunct in 2017, which comes from a Wikidata link to a predecessor company, MEC, which was populated from the MEC article in the German WP. The MEC article here was moved to Wavemaker, and is therefore just a redirect. 2017 is valid as the end date for MEC, but obviously not for Wavemaker. Can someone with more WD expertise straighten this out. MB 06:12, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have added an empty defunct = to override the Wikidata value without giving a new value.[2] PrimeHunter (talk) 13:26, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MB: Also created a separate item on Wikidata and I think to make it less confusing we should create two different items from this one or redirect Maxus (media agency) to this one. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 14:13, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
1997kB, I see there is now Q1278845 for MEC, Q1914308 for Maxus, and Q87715158 for Wavemaker - the successor to the two prior companies. So the three companies have unique items on WD. Thanks for that. I don't follow what else you are suggesting. Do you mean merge Maxus into Wavemaker and have only one article here? MB 21:03, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MB: Yes, either merge Maxus into Wavemaker or have 3 separate articles like Wikidata. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 08:09, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Could I get banned?[edit]

If I vandalize fandom, could I get banned on Wikipedia? New3400 (talk) 13:03, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@New3400: Of course. Any vandalism is disallowed. In our terminology, a block would be more likely than a ban. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:17, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Might be worth clarifying if New3400 means the site, Fandom, or our page on the same. I assumed the former, as it goes, which would have made my answer the polar opposite to yours  :) ——SN54129 13:26, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a case of that ever happening? New3400 (talk) 13:19, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) Fandom (previously known as Wikia) is not owned or related to Wikipedia. However, it's best practice not to vandalise anything - what does it get you? Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:30, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@New3400: I thought it was about Wikipedia pages (including userspace) considered fandom. If it's about a non-Wikimedia site like https://www.fandom.com/ then vandalism is unlikely to cause a block here. It may cause animosity from users who edit both sites, and may cause opposition if you ever request permissions. The site uses the same MediaWiki software as us but is not affiliated with us. It is not run by the Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia and many other wikis. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:42, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks New3400 (talk) 14:51, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reliability[edit]

which is not reliable? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ukedward (talkcontribs) 16:32, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Ukedward: Can you clarify what it is you asking about please? To read about reliable sources, click that link; for more about some regularly used or available sources see WP:RSP. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. This appears to be about Ren yano. --ColinFine (talk) 17:31, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation?[edit]

Shouldn't Mark Fisher be moved to Mark Fisher (disambiguation)? IW. (talk) 19:21, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ImmortalWizard: Only if there is a primary topic. You haven't mentioned a candidate. Most disambiguation pages don't have "(disambiguation)" in the name. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:34, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think Mark Fisher (theorist) is primary looking at the view stats. IW. (talk) 19:42, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Then you can request a move (remember to state the reason!) or be bold. He has more recent activity than some of the others but he does look far ahead, and he apparently generates far more interest after his January 2017 death than before.[3] PrimeHunter (talk) 19:54, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

tables of contents: technical/aesthetics question[edit]

Why is it that sometimes (eg, Cecilia (disambiguation)) the table of contents appears to the right of the first several items in the disambiguation list, while other times (eg, DAB (disambiguation)) the table of contents appears on the far right of the page but still pushes the disambiguation list further down the page (the way it would with the table of contents on the left)? Both these examples seem to use the same {{TOC right}} template.

96.244.220.178 (talk) 22:42, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure, I'm afraid, I would assume it's to do with your screen size, as it shows the same on both with mine. Wikipedia will sometimes change the display with templates such as this. Full information for the template can be found at {{TOC right}}. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 23:28, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: I don't think Wikipedia changes anything based on screen size. Your browser changes the way the HTML is displayed based on screen size. This is a basic feature of HTML and browsers. -Arch dude (talk) 23:44, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's done that way because the layout is more convenient for the article's layout, or the TOC gets in the way of the article's elements. This is called a floated TOC. {{SUBST:replyto|Can I Log In}}Copy and paste the code to reply(Talk) 23:32, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think they were asking why the floated TOC pushed the rest of the article down the page on one of the articles and not the other Can I Log In. I don't think they were asking why they were using TOC right. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 23:35, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It didn't happen to me in Firefox but it did in Edge. {{Stack}} fixed it for me.[4] The difference between the two pages is whether the TOC is wider than the Wiktionary box above it. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:47, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

At the very end of the "History" section of this page, there is the name Mrs Noel Middleton. Please make a DIRECT link to the section titled "Olive Middleton (nee Lupton)" on the Lupton family page. I cannot do this on my device. Thanks 180.150.21.186 (talk) 23:22, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
