Two similar categories on English Wikipedia - do we need both ?[edit]

It's Category:Documentary film directors and Category:Documentary filmmakers. I think perhaps we should keep documentary filmmakers and delete Documentary film directors.--Ezzex (talk) 00:32, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looking for help to publish a page[edit]

Hi Team,

I have published a biography page. The previous time it was declined due to bad citing, however it is now fixed and submitted again. As I am new to Wikipedia, I would kindly request if support can be extended.

Page Name: Sharif Mohamed Page About: A politician in the Maldives who was the 2nd Media Coordinator at The President's Office during the President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom's administration. He was also acting as the Deputy Spokesperson for local media-outlets.

@Wixmv: In Draft:Sharif_Mohamed, you still have several sentences that do not have inline citations. I suggest removing the Sources section, and using all your sources as inline citations. I also suggest you remove the Notes section and incorporate the notes into the text. In your {{cite web}} templates, the |last= and |first= fields should have the author's last and first name, while the dates belongs in the |date= field. If you think anything is compelete on Wikipedia, you are factually wrong. Numerous editors contribute to Wikipedia in the fields in which they are interested. Please always name or link the page you refer to. We have hundreds of articles which mention best actress nominees for various awards, e.g. Gawad Urian for Best Actress and FAMAS Award for Best Actress which both list her. This is about the article CHYDARU. 4qu4248485 and Materialscientist needs to discuss the edits on the article's talk page. It seems to me that the sentence most recently added, about monitoring the radioactive waste, is to a source which uses neither of the words "radioactive" and "waste". Intentionally erroneous information in page preview for "Geneva Convention"[edit]

I was looking at the page preview for the "Geneva Conventions" and noticed that the first sentence of the popup says "Jesus was a Republican" but that sentence is nowhere in the main article. This statement is clearly irrelevant to the page in question but as I'm a complete novice to Wikipedia editing, I'm not sure how to remove it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. It appears that a user vandalized the page and then removed it. In the future, you can report such users to WP:AIV. You may also click "edit" to open the edit window and remove the offending text, and then click "publish changes". 331dot (talk) 09:09, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just as an FYI - sometimes there is a delay on the page preview (and particularly bad if viewing the article from a google search). One instance of silly behaviour by somebody using a US DoJ IP number probably wouldn't merit a block, but I've never understood why vandalism should be tolerated as long as it comes from the US, British, or Canadian government (but not tolerated, I infer, if it comes from any other government). -- Hoary (talk) 09:44, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Block wikidata value import/override into infobox[edit]

Is there a way to personalise an infobox so as to not show info from wikidata? For example, for Cape Town article in Romanian, I would like to show both the max and min altitude, because most of the city is at sea level, but there's a mountain the middle the city. However, wikidata imports data into the infobox and shows altitude as simply being the height of the mountain, when that's not the case. Even if leave the altitude field blank or I delete altogether in the source code, it still appears along with max and min altitudes. So I would like to know how to block the import of that wikidata info. @ArchieTom: This is a help page for the English Wikipedia. You refer to ro:Cape Town at the Romanian Wikipedia. Seek help there, maybe at ro:Wikipedia:Cafenea. Data import from Wikidata depends on the coding of the local infobox template, in this case ro:Format:Infocaseta Așezare. It has documentation but I don't know Romanian. It varies whether and how Wikidata can be overridden in infoboxes, and whether it's documented. If there is a parameter for a value then it will usually override any Wikidata value. Finding fonts for special characters[edit]

When Wikipedia shows me a character with the little figure indicating it lacks the font to render it, how can I determine which font it needs installed? For example, in <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nestor%27s_Cup_(Pithekoussai)#Inscription> three characters fail to render, but I don't know how to correct that. @Ronks: It renders for me. I cannot tell for sure exactly what Wikipedia's server is sending in the HTML because all my tools insist on rendering the UTF-8 "properly", so I dumped it in hex. In the dump, that character is the two-byte string cd b1. The UTF-8 article allows us to convert this to "U+0371", and looking at the page U+0371, we see the very character that my system displays, which is the Greek Small Letter Heta. I'm not sure what font you need to load. I thought all the two-byte Unicodes were built-in, as there are less than 2000 of them. -Arch dude (talk) 16:54, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Each image on Commons or on Wikipedia has a description of its copyright status. None of the images require that you "get permission": the restrictions under which you may use an image are described in the copyright status. If we are claiming "fair use", then you may choose to also claim "fair use". If we are claiming "public domain", then you may choose to claim "public domain", etc. Note particularly: most of our images are copyrighted and licensed CC-BY-SA. I have tried to edit twice. I get a threatening response saying they will block my editing. My cousin was born in Manchester England not Manchester Virginia. He emigrated with his mother and father to the United States. Who do I contact with this false information?

Your change contradicts the cited reference. You would need to cite a published reliable source to support your contention. Any private knowledge you may have is of no use to Wikipedia if not published. See WP:Verifiability. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:23, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure, Longshaw that the person described in the article is your cousin? The article is about a person who died in 1865 during the US Civil War. Did your cousin die over 150 years ago? If not, this is about a different person with a similar name. If this is about your cousin, we need published reliable sources to substantiate his birth location and other statements. The "my cousin" confused everyone, because elsewhere in your comments you are clear that you mean the Civil War doctor that the article is about. So it comes back to at the Talk page of the article, citing references that the person in question was A) born in England, and B) his father was not a doctor. David Biddulph, Let's be careful about jumping to conclusions. IF Tony Grave chooses to edit the article, then they need to comply with the mandatory declaration. On the other hand, if they follow best practices, and simply propose edits on the article talk page, while that proposal should include a mention of the COI, that proposal for an edit does not require the declaration of paid editing AFAIK. The first paragraph says: "A paid contribution is one that involves contributing to Wikipedia in exchange for money or other inducements. It is nonsensical that an employee of a company who points out an error on a talk page, acknowledging that they have a COI, must also declare themselves a paid editor. This is nuts. Category list[edit]

A new article (SS Cynthia Olson) has inclusion in Category:World War II shipwrecks in the Pacific Ocean. All other articles with 'SS' (or 'USS') designations are alphabetized on the list according to name sans designator. SS Cynthia Olson, however, is listed under 'S' rather than 'C'.
