AfD generating red-link to discussion that acts strange

Hi, I nominated an article for deletion. I noticed the deletion notice automatically left on the creator's page initially showed up as redlink/does not exist. I made slight changes to it and the link became usable. Special:Diff/955652021. So after I made the change, the link turned blue and it worked. So I went to the older revision and it too was no longer red. The nomination was made days ago. Why did it become red link in the first place? Graywalls (talk) 01:00, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

@Graywalls: The AfD page wasn't registered in the database when the link was made so it became red at the time. Pages are cached for performance reasons so it remained red until the page was rendered again when you edited it. A purge would also have made it blue. I think Twinkle sends the edit to create the AfD page first but the edits are made rapidly and may complete in another order. In this case [1] the AfD page was the third listed edit but even if it's the first, I have seen Twinkle cases where the link is red because the page creation wasn't registered yet during processing of the edit with the link. Rod Steiger photo

I tried posting a suggestion in the Rod Steiger talk page to change the lede photo to an edited version of the same photo. Here's the link to my revision: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Rod_Steiger&oldid=955568624. But it got deleted for this reason in the edit summary: "you were warned about this and you agreed not to stoke up fires. Go and edit the other million odd articles there are out there." I was never warned about suggesting different photos to articles at all before (let alone on this article), and I was civil with my words here. Could my post go back up? I believe it was a valid question, and I don't see the reason why it needed to be deleted.

Another thing: I am not trying to get someone who's name starts with C in trouble. In fact, I think they thought they were doing the right thing. Because of this, I don't think the user deserves trouble here.

And yet another thing: If I offended anyone with that post, please let me know, because if that's the case, I'm sorry for posting it in the first place.

Edit Summary

Hello:

Can anyone explain why I am no longer seeing an article's section heading in the edit summary when I copy edit a section and save the edit? See Port of Hull.

@Twofingered Typist: Many sections in Port of Hull currently have a comment after the section header syntax on the same line, e.g. this at Port of Hull#Victoria Dock:

You didn't name a section and Lee Vilenski chose a section without such a comment. It breaks the feature where the edit summary field is prefilled with the section name inside /* ... */. It should say /* Victoria Dock */ for that section but it's currently blank. Remove the comments or move them to the next line per WP:TARGET. The comment refers to the redirect Victoria Dock, Hull. The suggested comment format at WP:TARGET seems more clear:

Lists for Wikipedia

Hello,

I have the Wikipedia iOS app installed and I'm able to create reading lists to save articles for later research. Now I'm trying to access those lists/articles from the Wikipedia website from a browser, but I'm unable to see the lists. I'm logged into the same account on both iOS and the website. What do I need to do to?

ERPost I'm admittedly not totally familiar with the mobile version, but when you say "reading lists", do you mean your watchlist? If using the desktop version of Wikipedia, it says "watchlist" in the upper right corner; click that to access your watchlist. You have no edits from your account other than your post here, so you didn't manually create a watchlist. 331dot (talk) 13:51, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

The question is not about the mobile version which is for existing browsers in mobile devices. It is about the Wikipedia app which is a separate program users can download to a mobile device to read Wikipedia. @ERPost: It is unfortunately not possible to access reading lists from browsers. mw:Wikimedia Apps/Reading list browser extension mentions a way to add articles to a reading list from a browser but you can still only access the list from the app. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:56, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Newer version of file not appearing in the article

I recently uploaded a newer version of my file, but the one appearing on the article it is used in is the old one. Why is this happening and how can it be fixed? This is the file and the article in question.

@Shawnqual: I guess you refer to the second map in the infobox. It looks like the current file version to me. I see no blue area at the bottom. Which file version do you see and can you describe the difference? PrimeHunter (talk) 14:23, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

@PrimeHunter: Yes, I'm referring to second map in the infobox. I am seeing the version from 6 May, this one, whereas, it should be displaying this one - the latest one, with the bottom area being lighter in color. When I click on the image, I see the current version, but when I look at the article, it shows the older version from 6 May.

Just checked the article from the chrome browser on my phone, it shows the latest version. However, on my desktop, it shows the older one. Are you seeing the version with the bottom part darker or light? Shawnqual (talk) 14:59, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Font size/

Is there a way to increase the font size in Wikipedia on my desktop?

Most desktop browsers can zoom in with Ctrl++, zoom out with Ctrl+-, and display default size with Ctrl+0. Does that help? Registered users have more options by adding specific CSS rules to their account. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:27, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

You can hold down Ctrl and slide the mouse wheel. It can be used when you use Chrome to read. RuiyuShen 14:44, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi guys my article was moved to draftspace

Firstly because was not enough citations now as they seems not to be constructive enough, I stucked I plan to keep reading and finally memorize guideline and rules of article creation.

Please help as councelling are not working due to coronavirus and other support forum does not help.

I will also make reading about how to make article more constructive.

Hello, Documentaryxsara, and welcome to Wikipedia. My advice to you is the same as I offer to any new editor: spend a few months working on existing articles and understanding how Wikipedia works before you try the very very difficult task of creating a new article. It is like taking up a new musical instrument and trying to play a concerto in the first week.

When you are ready to come back to it, please start by reading your first article, and referencing for beginners. Well done on providing some references in Draft:Michael Bezos. Unfortunately you seem to have done so by uploading them to some webhost or other (which Firefox warns me is not secure, so I haven't looked at them). That is not the way to do it. It is convenient for readers if a link can be provided to a source; but unless the source in question is only available on the web, the link is not an essential part of the citation, but only a convenience. The important part of the citation is the kind of bibliographic information you would find in a citation in a book or journal: author, title, title of work/journal/site, date, page number. These are important not just to help a reader find the source, but to help them evaluate the likely reliability of the source: we are only interested in sources that have been published by a reputable publisher, and uploading them to your own host obscures that (as well as possibly being a copyright violation). --ColinFine (talk) 16:26, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

I recently moved Prince Amedeo, Duke of Aosta because I believe this was the proper disambiguation to be using. I found Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(people)#Disambiguating this naming convention that explains the disambiguating between different people. It also says not to abbreviate born it to b.. However, this is an article about royalty and the guideline does not indicate anything about royalty. Was this a good move? Should I seek a consensus by a request for comment on this naming convention to see what the community thinks? Should I open an RM about the subject? Interstellarity (talk) 16:21, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

I was looking at my list of Contributions and noted several supposedly made to Complications of Diabetes. I have made no contributions to that article, nor have I ever even seen it until I went and looked at it to try and figure out how or what I was credited for.

The comment, 'add Cryer syndrome' on the earliest of these, I can identify as belonging to action I took on List of eponymously named diseases, which I sporadically edit. The next entry on my list of contributions after the 8:19 contribution (and a multitude thereafter) was, in fact, made to the referenced list article and I suspect that I probably made entries to it at all the intervening time points attributed to the diabetic article as I spent considerable time that evening on the list. Have you actually looked at the details of the edits concerned? The earliest one is this edit. Do you recognise that change? There is no similar text in List of eponymously named diseases, so it appears that you had followed a link and didn't realise that you had moved from that list to the article Complications of diabetes. If, of course, the text of the change was not text that you were responsible for, another explanation would be that your account had been compromised and that someone else had made the edits; in such a situation of a compromised account then your account will have to be blocked until it is known to be secure, but it seems much more likely that you were just confused as to which page you were editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:37, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

I literally just looked at the details and now remember that I was needing to update a redlinked entry on the list and, to do so, had to go into the diabetic complications article (and had a hell of a time with getting the cite into proper form, thus the multitude of edits). @AmyCos: I don't see that this account made any article edits, or any recent edits to the Australian Sports Medal article, or any articles containing "Ronald Vincent Coskerie". Also, AmyCos, please note that lists such as the one in Australian Sports Medal are generally not intended to be exhaustive, but are lists of notable people in Wikipedia's special sense of the word - that is, people who meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, so that Wikipedia has, or could have, an article about them. I'm afraid it all looks too complicated and I found a warning not to do something I didn't understand. An item in "preferences " would be a good idea. I did find there an option which doesn't change it back but does change it a little I think.Spinney Hill (talk) 08:55, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

@Spinney Hill: The code there is completely harmless and you can delete it if you don't like the result. Your CSS and JS pages display a standard warning because other code could theoretically be harmful. I haven't heard of Wikipedia users who were actually harmed by their CSS or JS code, unless you count poor Wikipedia display or functionality until they remove the code. Article title spelling

Hello, I was making some changes to the Naqab Zan article and noticed that while "Naqab Zan" is the transcription used by the sources cited, the channel that aired the show spells it "Naqab Zun", since there isn't really one standard for romanisation of Urdu. In this case, should I use the spelling present in secondary sources, or the channel's own per WP:ABOUTSELF?

[Edit Conflict] Curiously, M Imtiaz, your visible signature here is timed identically to the one at the Teahouse, at 16:20 on 9 May. I suspect that you copy-pasted it, because the View history tab shows your edit here timed at 00:27 on 10 May. Please don't do that, as it confuses the timeline for everybody else.

Please also don't duplicate queries on more than one desk. Eight hours is not a long time to wait for responses. Please remember that (a) all responders here, as indeed all Wikipedia editors, are volunteers contributing in their own time; (b) your query relates to a topic that relatively few editors on English Wikipedia will know about; and (c) It's the middle of the night in Europe and late evening on the east coast of the USA, so many potential responders are currently asleep or otherwise occupied. I suggest you wait at least 48 hours: if there are no other responses by then, it's because no Teahouse or Helpdesk regular knows the answer, not because we're all ignoring the query.

My own judgement, for what it's worth, would be to use the channel's spelling, and mention somewhere in the article or a footnote that other sources use another transliteration.
