Something very weird happened when I made an edit[edit]

Hi! I don't know if anyone has encountered this issue before:

I was making an edit to an article on Portal:Current events while not logged in (from pure lazyness). I saw someone then reverted it for being disruptive. When I checked what happened, I saw that indeed, within the same edit were contained both MY edit to a section about Pluto, AND a disruptive edit (someone replacing "government" with "goverwhinment").

I did not do the latter! I have no clue how what is obviously not my doing ended up logged as part of my own edit.

Did anyone ever experience the same? And is this a bug I can report? @Pyrhan: My guess is that this was not deliberate vandalism because the added text "whi" is also part of your intended edit, in the word "white". Cheesycow5 (talk) 00:59, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Pyrhan: There's no way someone else's edit could be intermixed with yours. That changed was saved as part of your edit. My guess is that your cursor wasn't where you thought it was when you started typing "whi", you saw it wasn't shown where you though it was, repositioned your cursor to the right place, and then continued editing, typing "white"...? Are you the type of "detail person" that would remember routine minutia like that from an hour earlier (most people wouldn't)? If you're really sure, I'd still suggest you watch to see if it happens again before reporting it at WP:VPT. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:41, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: I occasionally have the odd experience that the cursor in the edit window gets misplaced with respect to the actual editing point (source editor). --ColinFine (talk) 09:42, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Formatting help requested[edit]

Hi all

I'm writing some documentation to describe a project I'm working on and I have a small formatting issue that is making me sad. I want to make a nice pretty title graphic and I'm 99% of the way there, could someone please tell me how to move the subheading 'working with experts' to directly underneath the title? I don't understand why there is a big gap between the lines and a very light grey box at the bottom...

The gray box at bottom is caused by one of these: -moz-box-shadow: 0px 5px 5px -6px #ccc; -webkit-box-shadow: 0px 0px 0px -6px #ccc; box-shadow: 0px 5px 5px -6px #ccc; (for mw and my browser, the last one is the one that make the gray). Remove them to remove the gray.
If the 'title' is 'Switched On', I see the subtitle 'Working with experts...' directly below; the left edge of the 'S' aligns vertically with the left edge of the 'W'. Is that no what you want?

@Trappist the monk: thanks very much, deleting these got rid of the grey box. So all I want to do is move the subtitle up to right underneath the title, I think its something to do with the new paragraphs, but not sure how to avoid that John Cummings (talk) 13:10, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Trappist the monk: thanks very much for your help, it looks similar to the old version on my screen, I want basically no gap between the title and subtitle instead of a large gap, I don't understand why its not working... Logo on Team Wikipage[edit]

What is the proper way to post a logo on a Team WikiPage? I first tried PNG thru WikiCommons it got flagged for Copyright material. I then tried a JPG it once again got flagged for copyright material. We own the right to the logo and want to have it placed on there. What is the right way to go about this. Hello, NasTruck3. I assume you are talking about Jordan Anderson Racing? Because Commons requires all material uploaded there to be free for reuse, Logos are not normally uploaded there, but are used as "fair use", which means that they are uploaded directly to Wikipedia, and their use must comply with all the terms in the non-free content criteria. See also Logos.
On another matter: you say "we own", and your account was created the day after User:JordanAndersonRacing was warned that their username was unacceptable. I therefore conclude that you are somebody who is part of that organisation. Please read about editing with a conflict of interest, and stop editing that article directly: in future you should request changes on the talk page, using the edit request mechanism. Depending on your involvement, it is likely that you are what Wikipedia regards as a paid editor: if so, you must make the declaration specified in that link.
It might help to understand what I'm saying if you to replace the phrase "Team Wikipage" in your thinking by the phrase "Wikipedia's article about our team". --ColinFine (talk) 15:38, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have also added a couple of cleanup tags to the article Jordan Anderson Racing. It is liable to get deleted as non-notable unless somebody adds two or three reliable independent sources: places where somebody who has no connection with JAR, and has not been fed information in the form of an interview or press release, has chosen to publish significant coverage about the team in a reliably published source. I am unclear about the concept of a copyright holder providing a item under "fair use". It's clear we (Wikipedia) can let anyone else upload a fair-use logo. It's not clear that the copyright holder can. Surely the copyright holder can upload the logo (to en.wikipedia.org, not to commons) under a restrictive license instead? -Arch dude (talk) 16:24, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude. As far as I am aware, Wikipedia accepts images under only two conditions: either free (public domain, or a licence compatible with CC-BY-SA), or uploaded under its own NFCC. Since non-free masterial does not require permission, it can be uploaded by anybody, including the copyright holder. They are of course free to license it under a more restrictive licence, but my understanding is that neither Commons nor Wikipedia will accept it under that condition. --ColinFine (talk) 21:26, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WP:MOSLEADLANG help[edit]

Hello. I've been trying to find policy guidance on how to deal with foreign language names in the lead sentence of place articles. In particular, where the foreign language name is the same as the English name. For example, Gostivar and Saraj (Skopje) provide the Albanian-language name in the lead sentence despite that name being exactly the same as the article title/English name. Looking at Paris, it doesn't give the "French: Paris", probably because it would look silly. Thoughts? --Local hero talk 15:15, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know a policy, Local hero, but to me those cases are different from Paris precisely because there is more than one relevant local language. If only the Macedonian name were given, some might complain that the other languages had been omitted. I confess I was surprised to see "Turkish" mentioned for Gostivar: according to the article, 1/8 of the population are Turkish. --ColinFine (talk) 15:52, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A question about reverting edits[edit]

Just a quick question about reversions. I recently made a revert to the article British Medical Association (here), where a user had removed a lot of unsourced text, but changed the description of the subject from a professional organisation to that of a trade union. I suppose one can argue the BMA is a trade union, (indeed, their website describes them as both), but mainstream sources tend not to call it a trade union, and up until now neither have we. The user concerned seems happy to edit war on the issue so I've opened a discussion on the matter at Talk:British Medical Association in order to gain some consensus on whether or not such a change should be made. Removal of unsourced text is obviously a good thing, but introducing potentially contentious statements in the same edit is not. And the sources appear to be broken so I can't check them. It was not possible to separate the two things with a straightforward reversion, so am I right to have acted as I have, or should I go through the edit and pick out the incorrect text while maintaining the original description. Help With Wikitia Article[edit]

Hello, I wrote a Wikipedia article for an author named Fayeza Hasanat on Wikipedia that was rejected, but somehow the rejected article ended up on a site called Wikitia, somehow powered by whatever powers Wikipedia. The website Wikitia claims the only edits and publications that can be made is by their "verified" board of editors and to ask for any edit or removal would cost me $40 at the least. What can I do about this? When you created that draft here at Wikipedia, you agreed to release it under the creative commons license. You did this by hitting the bid blue "publish" button. That license allows anyone to copy that draft, as long as they attribute the source. This Wikipedia and Wikitia both use the the same open source wiki software, which is called MediaWiki. Anyone is free to create a wiki using this software, but that does not create a relationship between Wikipedia and Wikitia.
