October 2[edit]

in The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon please remove LEVEL1 "cohosts" & "H"[edit]

Thanks. Pi314m (talk) 00:12, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pi314m, there doesn't seem to be any page protection. Is there a reason why you can't do so yourself? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:17, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
yes; due to the size of the article, I get WMF error 503 errors. The LEVEL1

markers are workarounds to a problem that a reboot in the summer was supposed to fix. "503" is lumped into "500s" errors, and they're not high prio for fixing. I did "cohosts" without a problem - which may be why fixing the not-always "503" is low prio. something new - I'm getting 502, not 503. I never got a 502 before.

If you report this error to the Wikimedia System Administrators, please include the details below.

Pi314m (talk) 01:12, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pi314m, I was able to remove the "H" heading. I'm not sure if the "sevens" and "beyond" headings are also extraneous, as they seem out of place. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:31, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As for that issue it sounds like a Phabricator or WP:VPT-oriented issue. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:32, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

'sevens' served their purpose, and 'beyond' for now might as well also go: The "strike" keyword (Citation Needed) is hitting too many "right to strike" hits (Google). If I need to re-add it, that will be somewhat later. To close out this matter, please delete both sevens and beyond. Thanks for your help. I visited VPT re 503 months ago; time to tell them re 502. Pi314m (talk) 05:15, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi314m:  Done. I've deleted those two headings. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:33, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Logging in to closed projects[edit]

How do I log in to a closed project? For example, if I log into Simple English Wikiquote, it says:

There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please resubmit the form.

What do I do now? Gioguch (talk) 02:18, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Gioguch, I had no problem. Already logged in to English Wikipedia, I entered simple:wikt: in the search box. As expected, my enwiki login made logged in globally to all projects. —teb728 t c 03:39, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gioguch, could it be a cookies issue? Have you tried it after clearing cookies?Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 04:21, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Teb728 and Tenryuu: No, I meant closed projects, like simple:q: for Simple English Wikiquote. It will only say Log in at the top right corner. Gioguch (talk) 04:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see what you mean; I'm getting the same message even when I allow all possible Javascripts. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 05:15, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

::::@Tenryuu: So, is there a way to log in? Or is it impossible to log in to closed projects? Because on m:List of Wikipedias, it does say that users can still log in to closed projects. Gioguch (talk) 05:49, 2 October 2020 (UTC) [reply]

@Tenryuu: Never mind. It says existing users can log in, but I never logged into those projects when they were open. Now it won't let new users log in. Now this makes sense, and thank you for your help. Gioguch (talk) 05:52, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Authors - Evil Men and Seducers[edit]

Obviously nonsense

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44 KJV

And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity. Jeremiah 9:5 KJV

But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. 2 Timothy 3:13 KJV

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Romans 12:19 KJV

...And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.... Revelation 9 KJV

You know who you are... You will reap what you sow! God will avenge!

Vandalism help request from PunkAndromeda[edit]

I have noticed some vandalism at Brianna Hildebrand. Namely, continued edits in Arabic and edits including links to Qasem Soleimani which are entirely unrelated, unsourced, and frankly make no sense - in the page, history, these edits have been made by the IP addresses 5.124.173.156, 5.124.94.227, 5.22.65.194 and 5.22.62.52. I've fixed these issues for now, but my primary concern is that this vandalism will continue, and I do not know how to protect it in the future. What should be done? Thank you, PunkAndromeda (talk) 07:42, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@PunkAndromeda: If the disruption continues you can request page protection at WP:RFPP. If the individual IP addresses are continuing to vandalise they can be reported at WP:AIV. The disruption would need to be ongoing and the addresses received multiple warninmgs. Eagleash (talk) 08:05, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Login issues[edit]

I bought a new phone, and now I can't get logged back in. I've got 2-factor verification enabled, and apparently I need to have disabled on the old phone and re-enabled on the new before I turned the old phone in, as the authenticator apparently doesn't transfer. I have my scratch codes, but I don't know how to use them to log in. I've tried putting one in as the password, but no go. Can anyone help me figure out how to do that? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2605:A000:C7C3:D00:9495:C433:E269:954B (talk) 10:09, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IP, I dont have TFA enabled, but I guess this should be the way:
  1. go to Special:UserLogin
  2. enter your account's username and password.
  3. next, you will be propmpted to enter a security code form your app. enter one of the scratch codes instead.
  4. Once you are logged in, go to Special:OAuth to disable 2fa temporarely. You need another scratch code for that.
Once you are done with that, you can reenable tfa for your new device. Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 10:27, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Victor Schmidt, I copied/pasted one of my scratch codes, but verification failed. What would be my next step? 2605:A000:C7C3:D00:9495:C433:E269:954B (talk) 10:37, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if there's an easier way to do this, but as a worse case scienario you can email ca@wikimedia.org who can deal with this sort of thing. ~~ Alex Noble/1-2/TRB 10:56, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, thanks! 2605:A000:C7C3:D00:31FB:A59D:BEBF:8DD1 (talk) 11:14, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just in case anyone else references this discussion in the future, the login issue was resolved by entering the scratch code in all caps, since it is case-sensitive. This detail has been added to H:2FA § Logging in with 2FA. See the discussion at Special:Permalink/981449153 § 2FA woes for context. — Newslinger talk 10:50, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I want to create a page on iqoo mobile[edit]

Iqoo is a subsidiary brand of bbk electronics and i really want to create a page on it to contribute to Wikipedia as i have learned a lot from Wikipedia and now in return i also want to help in growing the amount of information it shares to millions or maybe billions of users worldwide. Feel happy to answer 🙂 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shroej (talkcontribs) 13:16, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shroej If it's a subsidiary, it might be better to start by additions to the article on the parent company(if there is one) before determining if the subsidiary warrants a separate article. The subsidiary would need to receive significant coverage(not press releases, staff interviews, announcements of routine business transactions, etc.) in independent reliable sources showing how the subsidiary meets the Wikipedia definition of a notable organization. 331dot (talk) 13:19, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Shroej: Please also take note of WP:COI and WP:PAID if you have any relation to the company. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 13:33, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Rights[edit]

Hello! Is it possible to assign a right if it is already in the Russian Wikipedia? I have the Autopatrolled, Rollback and Page mover already (I have ~1460 edits) Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 14:34, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Vova WIFI: In general, I think permissions on en.wiki should be based on experience on en.wiki, which likely has different standards, interpretations, expectations, and overall zeitgeist. I would certainly not assign autopatrolled or page mover without significant en.wiki experience. Personally, I'd be willing to assign rollback because the consequences of misuse are pretty small, and it can be removed easily. This isn't really the place to request it, but I'll cut through the bureaucracy and do it myself after I wait a bit to see if anyone objects to that. --Floquenbeam (talk) 14:51, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, Vova WIFI, for speaking too soon. When I look at WP:RFP/R, I see people with decent amounts of experience on en.wiki still getting rejected for rollback because they don't have enough experience reverting vandalism. While I disagree with this approach, and think we should hand out rollback like candy (and take it away like candy if misused) , I probably shouldn't overrule what appears to be our consensus on that. I would say you have a better chance getting rollback than the other two rights, but it's still not likely, and if you want to try, you'll need to request it at WP:RFP/R. --Floquenbeam (talk) 14:57, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Floquenbeam, thanks! So I need to go to a special page and request there and specify my reason?
  • I need Autopatrolled to nominate files for renaming so that the patrollers don't have to check it. Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 15:08, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vova WIFI: If you go to WP:Requests for permissions, it lists the user groups, what is generally expected before being granted (for example, autopatrolled typically requires creating 25 new articles), and gives an "add request" link after each permission. You have to request each one separately. I think it is unlikely you'll be given autopatrolled. It is possible a rollback request will succeed, I don't know. But that's where you ask. --Floquenbeam (talk) 15:17, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks! I'll go to the special page. What impossible rules for Autopatrolled - in the Russian Wikipedia, you only need 100 edits. And what about Extended confirmed? It needs 500 edits... Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 15:23, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vova WIFI: As a seperate issue, your user name appears to violate the English Wikipedia's prohibition against using a corporate name. Please see WP:USERNAME. This may affect an adiminstrator's decision to grant you permissions. -Arch dude (talk) 16:04, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vova WIFI: The specific point is in the WP:ISU section. I thought it was a corporate name (or perhaps the name of a product) when I Googled for it and found this. If it's not a corporate name, you should be OK, but you might want to explain it on your user page. -Arch dude (talk) 16:39, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Vova WIFI:You are free to also create a user page here at the English Wikipedia, and since this issue may involve a rule that is specific to this Wikipedia, it would be a good idea. -Arch dude (talk) 01:36, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It is true that on other language versions(I'm aware of the German one as one) that business names/accounts are permitted and even encouraged, but they are not allowed here on the English Wikipedia. This was made more complicated when usernames were made global(across all versions of Wikipedia). Here, a username must reflect that a specific person is exclusively operating an account and granting no one else access to it. 331dot (talk) 16:46, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's true. I asked a russian bureaucrat to change my name from the one I use to sign up for the real one. Okay, I'll create a page here, but I'll indicate that my main account is ruwiki and give you a link to it. By the way, advertising names are also prohibited in Russian Wikipedia, but there were no questions for me. Владимир Меланхолин (обс) 06:15, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Redirect from Cryptojacking to Monero[edit]

People keep adding the redirect from Cryptojacking to the Cryptocurrency "Monero": https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cryptojacking&redirect=no

This is similar as redirecting from "Fraud" to "US Dollar". Should I just revert it again? Is it possible to do anything to prevent people from reverting? --MartinThoma (talk) 16:02, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MartinThoma If this is a habitual problem, you can request page protection at WP:RFPP. 331dot (talk) 16:15, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi MartinThoma. It seems like other users are reverting your addition because we don't usually keep articles which are just a dictionary definition, and they're restoring the redirect to Monero because that's the most recent topic it redirected to. If you're planning to create a separate article or section on cryptojacking, why don't you try writing it at Draft:Cryptojacking? That will give you more space to work, and when you think your draft is ready you can ask for it to be moved over the cryptojacking redirect. I see that the redirect actually points to a section that doesn't exist (it did when the redirect was created in 2017) so we'll have to do something about that too. I'll send you a discussion link in a few minutes. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 16:19, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MartinThoma: we have a process called redirects for discussion where you can nominate a redirect to discuss doing something different with it, including deletion. I've nominated this redirect at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2020 October 2#Cryptojacking. You're welcome to participate in that discussion. Help for page creation[edit]

Hi I am trying to get on the internet with my wikipedia page how can i do that — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alex Sylber (talkcontribs) 16:52, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you need help with your user page, see WP:USERPAGE. If you wish to have a Wikipedia article about yourself, you will first need to do stuff in the real world to make yourself notable by our definition: see WP:N and WP:AMOUNT. You can have a page on the internet at any of several other web sites: see WP:OUT. If none of these cover your issue, then come back here and we can try to help. -Arch dude (talk) 17:02, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Alex Sylber: I assume that you meant to ask "How can I create a Wikipedia article about me?" (not yust page). Please note that autobiographys are strongely discouraged (but not forbidden) and that there are reasons why one might not want a Wikipedia article. Next, please be advised that even if you were to manage to create an article, it would not be "your" page, but Wikipedia's page about you. If you dont want others to contribute, consider alternative outlets. If you are still sure that you want to create the article, follow this guide by User Ian.thomson on articles that wont be deleted or rejected.
