Reliable source or not?[edit]

Hi Wikipedians. How do I determine if a source is reliable or not? And how do I know for sure that statement needs to be deleted/removed? Much thanks Willygeorgina (talk) 00:18, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Willygeorgina You may review reliable sources for more information, but in short, a reliable source has a reputation of editorial control and fact checking; in other words, they don't make stuff up, and they check their information before publication. You may find this list helpful, as it lists many sources and explains if they are considered reliable or not, and why. If you need help in determining if a source is a reliable source, you may start a discussion at the reliable sources noticeboard. 331dot (talk) 00:26, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Posting protected information[edit]

Good evening. I am a frequent contributor to items relevant to the Fraternities and Sororities project. An anonymous user from Ohio, at IP address 96.11.134.243, and another user account named Forbiddenflyers have twice now posted private information pertaining to the sorority Gamma Phi Beta. I am not connected with Gamma Phi Beta, but I was concerned when I noticed the first posting from Forbiddenflyers. I alerted their HQ about this. Shortly, someone then reverted and hid those few sentences, which had inappropriately shared private, esoteric or "secret" matters known to fraternity members. Tonight, a user at the IP address 96.11.134.243 made the same changes. Now knowing these to be unwelcome, I reverted the most recent change myself.

How can this organization lock down the article to ensure the privacy of these matters? Thank you. Jax MN (talk) 02:17, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot. Wikipedia articles are open for editing except in unusual circumstances. See WP:Page protection for our policy. The information can be removed from the article if, for instance, no reliable source is provided verifying the accuracy. Rmhermen (talk) 02:44, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • I suppose we are talking about this revert of yours. Per WP:NOTCENSORED, Wikipedia does not consider itself bound by taboos, secrets etc. of any other organization, with very few exceptions (we do not post private information of individuals because we are not jerks, and we avoid gratuitous pornography, but that is about it). For instance, sawing a woman in half includes methods that stage magicians would rather keep off the internet.
You may have a better time arguing either that the information is insufficiently sourced or irrelevant to the article. TigraanClick here to contact me 07:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

My name is someone's "User Name"[edit]

Hello, I went to create a new account, never have before and found out my name is another User name? I'm confused, is there another Charmaine Loverin? I plugged in for my User name " Charmaine Loverin... what came back was "my user name is to close to User name CharmaineLoverin (no space)... can you explain or clarify this?

There is a ten-year-old account named user:CharmaineLoverin and your proposed username is too similar to it to be allowed.. That account has never made any edits so you could probably take it over. See WP:USURP Meters (talk) 04:52, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling and grammar[edit]

Is there any place on English Wikipedia where you can ask questions about spelling and grammar? Sometimes kind users show up and copy edit away all my bad English, sometimes I'm not that lucky. ImTheIP (talk) 06:55, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ImTheIP:, you could also leave a message directly on the Talk page of the article in question. Mathglot (talk) 00:22, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

how to edit Sushant Singh Rajput[edit]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sushant_Singh_Rajput

The cause of the death is incorrect: This is still under investigation.

Kindly change the cause of the death. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sue kaur (talkcontribs) 07:06, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • Please see the talk page of the article (Talk:Sushant Singh Rajput) which contains multiple requests to the same effect, which were all denied due to the lack of reliable sources. This is also the 5th request or so on the Help Desk/Teahouse pages.
If you have a reliable source (please read this link carefully) for the murder thesis you might want to bring them to the talk page of the article. Gossip magazines do not count. TigraanClick here to contact me 07:38, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tigraan: I count 22 between the help desk and Teahouse. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 08:18, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I did not want to bother counting, but that's still a bit higher than I expected! TigraanClick here to contact me 12:58, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How do I add some images in an article?[edit]

Hi everyone. Just need some little help. I was wondering how I can insert images in an article. I've been reading some copyright rules so I became hesitant. Thanks

This question has also been asked and responded to at the Teahouse. Apollogone, please don't ask the same question in more than one place as it wastes volunteers' time. Thanks, Turner Street (talk) 12:58, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Turner Street: I did not know that, I'm just new here. Next time then I won't. Apollogone (talk) 05:44, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Save Articles & Lists From iOS App[edit]

Hello Wikipedia Gurus,

Is there someplace on the website where I can see my saved pages & lists from the app? Does the app sync with my account on the website? If not, would you be willing to make it so, in return for a donation of 80 billion dollars, even though I'm completely lying about that?

Thanks, Hmapy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hmapy (talkcontribs) 12:33, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hmapy: Yes. Of course, I'm lying, too. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 13:05, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Hmapy. I can't find a reference for this (I've even looked in the archives of the WP:Village pump, so I can't have found the right search term), but last time it was asked the answer was certainly that saved lists were only in the app, and not on the website. That was probably more than a year ago, so it's possible it's changed, but I haven't heard anything about that. --ColinFine (talk) 15:28, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As Colin said, the info is local to your device. If you wish to keep this sort of thing on the server, you are free to create sub-pages of your user page for that. -Arch dude (talk) 17:46, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to update a company logo?[edit]

Hi there--

I am trying to update the ISC company logo at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Internet_Systems_Consortium_logo.png (for the main page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Systems_Consortium), but I can't figure out how to do it. The page says that the file there is not replaceable, but when I use the Media Viewer to try to upload a new logo file it says that it's having trouble determining that I have the rights to the file. The person who originally uploaded the logo file in 2012 no longer works for ISC.

I would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks.

@Sgoldlust: Hello Suzanne Goldlust, and welcome to Wikipedia. You need to be WP:AUTOCONFIRMED to be able to upload (or replace) files. I have uploaded the new version for you. Please check that I have done this right. Victor Schmidt (talk) 15:03, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

File upload down.... again[edit]

Hello, the file upload is not working atm. In the last few months it has not been working about 1/3 of the time. Please can someone look into this as not only is it incredibly frustrating, it is also actively putting off people uploading files and adding to the encylopedia. WisDom-UK (talk) 16:47, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Veritas94: You can report bugs and technical issues at [Phabricator]. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:50, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Shaikha Al Maskari has been deleted by DGG[edit]

Dear Support Desk,

A Wikipedia admin (User_talk:DGG) deleted a page I made two years back by marking it advertisement. Its not true. The page I made belongs to Her Excellency Dr. Shaikha Al Maskari, Her Excellency is an active philanthropist through her private foundation and in coordination with Emirates Red Crescent, she is internationally recognized for her humanitarian initiatives, particularly in the areas of children's and women's rights and through her relief efforts to end the refugee crisis. She serves on several non-profit organization boards, including the Arab International Women’s Forum (AIWF) and the Abu Dhabi Music & Arts Foundation (ADMAF).

I am strongly objecting the move from the admin and the ability of him to understand the article.

Kindly requesting you to restore the page.

Thank you

Zulqarnain— Preceding unsigned comment added by Zulqarnain.khan (talkcontribs)

Courtesy link: Shaikha Al Maskari.  Zulqarnain.khan, it seems you have some fundamental misunderstandings of what Wikiepdia is. You say the page belongs to Dr. Shaikha Al Maskari, however Wikipedia articles are not owned by their subjects. It sounds like you think a Wikipedia article exists to promote the subject, however Wikipedia is not a means of promotion, advertising, or public relations. If you are employed by her or are a relative or friend of hers, you need to read our policy on conflicts of interest and paid editing. If you are employed by or paid by her, you need to declare that status immediately. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:35, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I am have no relations with the person, but I am sure that article is not an advertising.

Thanks— Preceding unsigned comment added by Zulqarnain.khan (talkcontribs)

@Zulqarnain.khan: It's possible that you misunderstand our use of the term "advertisement". We use it in the general sense of "promotion" of any type (WP:PROMO), not just in the sense of selling something for commercial gain. You are free to try again if the subject is notable by our definition (WP:N) and you can demonstrate notability by citing reliable sources. Your new article must have an encyclopedic tone and must avoid any form of puffery (see WP:PUFF). Read some Wikipedia articles on similar subjects to get an idea of appropriate language. I urge you to create a draft article and submit it for review rather than just creating a new mainspace article, since this will let other editors help you more easily. See WP:YFA -Arch dude (talk) 21:31, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You should understand, for example, that we don't accept smarm and honorifics like HE Dr. Shaikha for a subject who should, according to our manual of style, simply be referred to as Al Maskari or al Maskari. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:37, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zulqarnain.khan: and when you take other articles as an example, please make sure to choose one of our best. WP:OTHERCRAPEXISTS explains why. Victor Schmidt (talk) 06:30, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

translate and add page to English Wiki from another language Wiki?[edit]

I am trying to get a dutch Wiki article translated to English and added to the English Wikipedia. It is concerning a dutch painter. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Hendrik_Koning_(1860-1945) Could anyone assist me in getting this translated and posted to the English Wikipedia? Thanks Charlie W.

@Cwebb69: Please see Wikipedia:Translation#Requesting_a_translation_from_a_foreign_language_to_English. Good luck! Calliopejen1 (talk) 20:46, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Using a template from a sister project[edit]

Is it possible to use a template from a sister project of Wikipedia, or from another language of Wikipedia? E.g. I need something like {{wikt:link|en|go|went}} to call Wikidictionary's template {{link}} with the aforementioned parameters, and in another language's wiki {{en:xpd|CURRENTDAY}} should call {{xpd|CURRENTDAY}}. Veritas94 (talk) 20:18, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Veritas94: This is fairly technical and requires an understanding of how the other sister projects interact. You might be better off asking at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical). TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:47, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But the simple answer is "no", but for your example, why not just do the former with a simple wikilink: [[wikt:go|went]], yielding went? As far as {{xpd}}, why not just import the template into the sister project where you want to use it? Mathglot (talk) 00:04, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

username change[edit]

I want to change my username from Ardo Keshishian to Արտաշէս Քէշիշեան — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ardo keshishian (talkcontribs) 21:08, September 18, 2020 (UTC)
