I am an Author of Christian Poetry Can I post My Poetry on Your Site?[edit]

I am an Author of Christian Poetry who lives in Orlando, Florida. I write about 800 poems a year; many of which are on a site called The Messianic Literary Corner. Am I able to post My Poetry On your site? I am very unfamiliar with this Internet Site. I would appreciate your reply. My Sincere Thank You,

David Heischman Orlando, Florida2603:9001:2A02:EA00:5177:4F97:B097:B6CF (talk) 00:47, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No. We're an encyclopaedia, not a poetry site. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 00:49, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Roxy the dog:, no need for that! No church that I know of--I suspect not even yours, whatever it is--deems it a sin to be unaware or uncertain of the purpose and nature of Wikipedia. (A few, though, do hold it a sin to take the Lord's name in vain, but I am nobody to judge another on that!) Uporządnicki (talk) 15:00, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Change a logo on a business page[edit]

Hello,

I would like to update our business logo on a company page, but need some assistance on how to do so.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:APN_News_%26_Media_Logo.svg (This is the incorrect logo) With the correct one being on the bottom of the page.

Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 14.200.143.82 (talk) 04:33, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! This is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. To request help for Wikimedia Commons, see commons:Commons:Help desk. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 05:03, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I guess they want to change which logo is displayed on an unidentified page. APN News & Media redirects to the new name Here, There & Everywhere (company) which already displays the new logo File:Here, There & Everywhere logo.png, so I don't know which page they want changed. Their website https://htande.com.au displays the same logo as us. Is this about the German or French Wikipedia which still display the old logo? This help desk is for the English Wikipedia. Or maybe it isn't about Wikipedia at all but a Google search where Google, not Wikipedia, displays the old logo. See Template:HD/GKG for that. God, I'm so tired of posters who don't say which page they want help with. PrimeHunter (talk) 07:14, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

My wikipedia page[edit]

I paid an editor to tidy up my wikipedia page, as the information it contained had been haphazardly added over many years. But now the page carries a warning that it contains a paid contribution and the neutrality is being questioned.

I simply want the information about me to be clear and concise or alternatively for the page to be removed. Why is wikipedia penalising individuals for clarifying their own information? Can anyone help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTypistTypes (talkcontribs) 09:13, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you paid someone to write it and they didn't make a paid editing disclosure properly, then that's an appropriate tag for the article. Joseph2302 (talk) 09:23, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TheTypistTypes If you haven't already, take the time to read these links: WP:AUTO, WP:OWN and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. WP:PAID is unpopular around here. If WP has an article about you, the goal is for it to be a summary of what reliable sources, independent of you, says about you. Almost everything else is outside the scope of WP, that's what social media is for.
"Haphazardly added over many years" is pretty much how this place works a lot of the time, it's how WP is "organised." That doesn't mean improvement isn't possible. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:26, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback. I have no interest in writing the page myself - it was independently created almost decade ago. I totally respect the neutrality aspect of Wikipedia. So how do I remove the page entirely or get someone professional to remove the warnings? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTypistTypes (talkcontribs) 09:42, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The tags will be removed when a neutral volunteer editor has reviewed the article for neutrality and other factors. There isn't much you can do to accelerate the process. 331dot (talk) 11:57, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You are not allowed to remove the template yourself, @TheTypistTypes; you should not be editing the article at all except to make very small, uncontroversial changes. You can discuss things and make requests on the talk page, which seems to be Talk:Robert Evans (writer). Wikignome Wintergreentalk 13:51, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheTypistTypes (talkcontribs) 14:00, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@TheTypistTypes: In the future, you can request improvements to the article about you at Talk:Robert Evans (writer) with the {{edit request}} template, or you can use the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard. Thanks! (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) GoingBatty (talk) 16:26, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It cannot be emphasized strongly enough: "my wikipedia page" is a false header. That is not your wikipedia page. That is an article within the English-language version of Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia; an article of which you happen to be the subject. You have no proprietary rights in that article. We have the same ethical obligation to try to make sure that article is correct, as we do with any of the other 5-6-7 million (I've lost count) articles here. --Orange Mike | Talk 16:57, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Orangemike: It are currently 6,818,576 articles. Special:Stats has a few more stats. Victor Schmidt (talk) 18:22, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How can I replace a main image of a wikipedia page?[edit]

Thanks in advance!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anoukhalal (talkcontribs) 15:22, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's hard to answer without knowing any of the details. In general, I'd advise you to start a discussion on the article's talk page, explaining why you think the replacement would be an improvement. The image you want to use instead, where is it at present? Maproom (talk) 16:03, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Anoukhalal: Please link the page and theimage you are interested in. Do you mean something specific by "main image" like an image displayed in a popup or mobile searches? If you refer to that then the image is picked automatically by mw:Extension:PageImages#Image choice. Ignore it if you just care about how an article looks. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:37, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter:Hi guys! Thanks for responding. This is the page I want to change the main image from: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mees_Peijnenburg#%2Fmedia%2FBestand%3AParadise_Drifters_-_IFFR_2020_%2842%29.jpg this is the image I need instead: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mees_Peijnenburg_Nieuw.jpg - how to do this? :)
Anoukhala The article you are referring to is on the Dutch Wikipedia, where they store the infobox image in Wikidata rather than (as we would do here) placing a file link within the article itself. So you need to edit the Wikidata page for Mees Peijnenburg. The image you are proposing to use is poorly centred, so I'd seek advice from Dutch experts before making the change, if I were you. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:24, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Anoukhala:, if it's poorly centered and you don't have an alternative, you can use template Annotatieafbeelding to crop, zoom, or recenter it as you wish. Unfortunately, the Dutch version of the template is undocumented, and the English version (here) is poorly documented, but if you contact me at my Talk page I can help you with it. mvg, Mathglot (talk) 07:56, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you want to change File:Paradise Drifters - IFFR 2020 (42).jpg to File:Mees Peijnenburg Nieuw.jpg? The former looks better to me. Was it you who changed it at Mees Peijnenburg (Q1916928)? PrimeHunter (talk) 08:35, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Correct citation style[edit]

Hello.

Let's say I wish to cite the following article:

“Inductive” vs. “Deductive”: How To Reason Out Their Differences

Which of the following styles should I use?

  • ["'Inductive' vs. 'Deductive': How To Reason Out Their Differences".] Dictionary.com. 16 November 2021.
  • ["'Inductive' vs. 'Deductive': How To Reason Out Their Differences."] Dictionary.com. 16 November 2021.
  • ['"Inductive" vs. "Deductive": How To Reason Out Their Differences'.] Dictionary.com. 16 November 2021.
  • ['"Inductive" vs. "Deductive": How To Reason Out Their Differences.'] Dictionary.com. 16 November 2021.

The square bracket show the area that I include in the hyperlink. Waysidesc (talk) 19:27, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Use the citation style that predominates in the article; see WP:CITEVAR. cs1|2 templates will automatically kern the quotation marks where they are adjacent to the quotation marks that are supplied by the template:
{{cite dictionary |entry='Inductive' vs. 'Deductive': How To Reason Out Their Differences |dictionary=Dictionary.com |url=https://www.dictionary.com/e/inductive-vs-deductive/ |date=16 November 2021}}
"'Inductive' vs. 'Deductive': How To Reason Out Their Differences". Dictionary.com. 16 November 2021.
Do not use curly quotes (see WP:CURLY).
Trappist the monk (talk) 20:19, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi.
First, why did you use {{Cite dictionary}} for citing an essay? Did the domain name deceive you or is there an exceptionally good reason?
Second, part of your answer seems malformed. My best guess: you wanted to insert a template with two parameters, "cs1" and "2", but the VisualEditor messed up. Or you wanted to write CS1/2 but held the shift by mistake. That begs the question: What's CS1? Waysidesc (talk) 22:33, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to use {{cite encyclopedia}} because the source looks like an encyclopedia-like article. I changed to {{cite dictionary}} (a redirect to {{cite encyclopedia}}) because the source is a 'dictionary' and because {{cite encyclopedia}} would be confusing.
Nothing is malformed. cs1|2 is stylistic shorthand for Citation Style 1 or ('|') Citation Style 2 which styles are the predominant citation styles used at en.wiki.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:09, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I see. The pipe didn't deliver that message.
Which of them is the one that the UI uses? Waysidesc (talk) 14:58, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know what you are asking. Which one of what? What do you mean by UI? (I presume that you mean 'user interface' but there are a lot of user interfaces).
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:34, 25 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, never mind. We'd better not stray from the main question. My original question was: "Which of the following styles should I use? [...]" The answer, judging by everything you said, is: "Who cares? Wikipedia is a hectic mess. There is no right answer." Waysidesc (talk) 11:20, 26 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Finding copies of old press agency articles[edit]

removing redirects[edit]

How do I get redirects removed from 'work in progress' pages on my user page? I'd like to reuse the page, but obviously they link to the published articles. I think I know how to avoid that in the future.Usedtoknowthat (talk) 20:04, 22 December 2021 (UTC) 'Work in Progress 3' linking to 8th Division (United Kingdom) in the First World War, I should have said...Usedtoknowthat (talk) 20:11, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To stop User:Usedtoknowthat/Work in Progress 3 from being a redirect, just click on that link, then at the 8th Division article click where it says "(Redirected from User:Usedtoknowthat/Work in Progress 3)" to get to the user page, and edit that to delete the stuff at the top. Why are some cropped versions of photos bigger (more pixels) than the original photos?[edit]

I’ve noticed quite a few photos that have been cropped and sometimes the cropped photos have more pixels than the original photos. Why is that?--77.98.160.139 (talk) 23:17, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you refer to the displayed size in articles then there is code to specify which size to display. It can be smaller but not larger than the uploaded file. If you refer to the uploaded file with the size listed on the file page then the cropper may have used image software which can make a version with more pixels by copying pixels or guessing at their color. Cropping is done by users on their own computers before they upload the cropped version. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:31, 22 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: If I can give you an example, can you please explain how it is possible?
https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Margaret_Thatcher_(probably_Donovan)
https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Margaret_Thatcher_stock_portrait.jpg
https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Margaret_Thatcher_cropped2.png
The standard image of the portrait and it is 865 x 1099 pixels and the cropped image of the portrait is 1224 x 1412 pixels. How is that even possible?--FriendlyFerret9854 (talk) 09:55, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@FriendlyFerret9854: Lots of image software can enlarge images. Maybe it was cropped first and then enlarged. Photos usually become blurry if they are enlarged a lot. "Metadata" at the bottom of the page says "Software used GIMP 2.10". "Summary" says "This file was derived from: Margaret Thatcher.png". That statement is from 2019.[1] The current image version is from 2021. It's possible the uploader found a higher resolution version somewhere and didn't update the summary.
