January 31[edit]

Why does wikipedia support having an encyclopedia use definitions that do not align with their past articles?[edit]

React (web framework) is by definition not a web framework. "many web frameworks provide libraries for database access, templating frameworks, and session management, and they often promote code reuse.[1] Although they often target development of dynamic web sites, they are also applicable to static websites.[2]" - Web framework ?

There are also under Framework: Software framework, a reusable set of libraries or classes for a software system or subsystem Web framework, for development of dynamic websites, web applications, and web services

List of JavaScript libraries would also suggest that React should be listed under "DOM (manipulation) oriented" section by the tool's use case.

There seems to be no supporting documentation to suggest that React is in fact a framework, let alone a Web framework. It could be considered a library for DOM manipulation and would fit with the "a well-defined interface by which the behavior is invoked" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_(computing) definition.

However React could not be compared to .NET Framework Spring Framework or Next.js or Sails.js ?

React on it's own can only build a single page HTML webpage; however, does not offer a framework (by wikipedia nor academia definitions) for providing development of dynamic websites, such as serving webpages or routing addresses.

It would seem harmful to continue to have React listed as a web framework, let alone a framework by wikipedia's own definitions. Does this seem to be the cases? If not, why is React a Web Framework?

Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state. If those sources are being summarized inaccurately, or you have your own independent reliable sources with missing or improved information, please offer them on the relevant article talk pages. 331dot (talk) 08:22, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state, if that is the case why are their definitions not aligning? Seems dangerous without updating the priorly mentioned documents. So how is their contributions being accepted when they contradict the currently accepted independent reliable sources? If there is no continuity on their use of internal wiki citations why is that not an option to report for at least lacking continuity between reference utilization? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jsframeworkdev (talkcontribs) 08:36, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Jsframeworkdev Wikipedia does not have a single authority to "report" things to- as I said, you may discuss your concerns on the relevant article talk page. If reliable sources disagree as to something, then the community should determine how to best summarize them, giving due weight to the proportion of sources that offer particular viewpoints. 331dot (talk) 08:40, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Do not move or rename a page by copying/pasting its content, use Wikipedia:Requested moves if you want another title, this one was decided at Talk:React (web framework)#Requested move 9 August 2019. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:22, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Jsframeworkdev: English evolves, and techno-English evolves at a dizzy pace. Editors generally use the terminology used by their sources, so when a term's definition changes or is used differently by different sources, Wikipedia cannot easily maintain consistent definitions across all of the affected articles. This is further complicated by the global nature of the English Wikipedia, where the same term means different things in different places. See supercomputer and SUV as examples of change over time and in different countries. In some cases it is useful to explain the differences in the article most associated with the term, and then explain the precise intended definition in any article that needs precision that uses the term. -Arch dude (talk) 17:43, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Attempt to Christine Lahti's Article[edit]

OOOPs! Sorry, I confess that I do not know how to edit correctly. I was in no way trying to vandalize Ms. Lahti's sight. I saw the play back in 1988 with her and Christopher Reeve, and I noticed it was not mentioned in her theater credits. I'll admit I did a botched attempt at editing to include the play Summer and Smoke. I'll take your advice and practice in search box. Again with my apologies, Leo A. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:203:580:B8E0:B5A9:E1C6:D0D8:F4D (talk) 09:29, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's called the sandbox. You can also use the "Show preview" button to check how your edit will look if you save it. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:40, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Enable dark mode on wikipedia[edit]

How to enable it — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.181.116.105 (talk) 10:13, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you have an account, you can add a mod like Volker E. (WMF)/dark-mode. Alternately, the mobile app has light, dark, black, and sepia themes, logged-in or not. Otherwise, I fear you may be SOL (Sadly Out of Luck). :(Pelagicmessages ) – (23:20 Sun 31, AEDT) 12:20, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That link presumably meant to go to User:Volker E. (WMF)/dark-mode. Victor Schmidt (talk) 14:02, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Film release year wrong[edit]

Regarding Bordertown (2006 film). Both IMDb and Rottentomatoes give 2007 as release year. Title should be fixed I think. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 12:49, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Aquatic Ambiance: Please discuss at the article talk page. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 14:15, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Eagleash: I did but no one is responding. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 15:23, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Aquatic Ambiance: It might take a few days before someone responds. GoingBatty (talk) 15:34, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Aquatic Ambiance: It's been less than an hour so far; you could escalate the discussion by proposing a move and then give it at least a week; then if there has been no input, make the move yourself, adding an explanatory note in the discussion you started at the talk page. Having said that, I do not know if there's any convention as to whether the year of filming or the release date is conventionally used. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 15:43, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Aquatic Ambiance: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (films)#Between films of the same name says: "add the year of its first verifiable release (including film festival screenings)". I have investigated it carefully, added [1] a good Reuters source [2] from the 2007 premiere, and moved it [3] to Bordertown (2007 film) with a detailed summary: "Correct year. It was once scheduled for 2006, some poor sources claim that year but many reliable sources from the time say 2007 Berlinale was the premiere. No good source found for 2006". The Google search Bordertown premiere 2007 Berlin finds many good sources. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:36, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you! Only thing left now is the deletion of Bordertown (2006 film). Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 19:52, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Aquatic Ambiance: That should only be considered if Special:WhatLinksHere/Bordertown (2006 film) shows no articles. I have updated two navigation templates but the change hasn't propagated to all the articles yet, and some articles link it in their own source. We usually keep redirects after moves, and some sources do claim 2006 so users may use that year in searches for it. I have added {{R from incorrect title}} to it. This means Wikipedia:Moving a page#Moving over a redirect would now require an administrator, reducing the risk of another wrong move like [4]. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:13, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Drawings of old buildings from the United States[edit]

There are many old drawings for Lowell Observatory, here is one of them:
File:Lowell Observatory, Clark Dome, 1400 West Mars Road, Flagstaff, Coconino County, AZ HABS ARIZ,3-FLAG,1B- (sheet 2 of 4).tif
And for Griffith Observatory and for Lick Observatory and for Fallingwater I never got the drawings from Historic American Buildings Survey :-(
Can anyone find and upload drawings of the Griffith Observatory, Lick Observatory, and Fallingwater to Wikimedia Commons? — LibreOffice Usermessages ) – 13:18, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Founding Date of NOAA[edit]

I think the date you have for the founding is incorrect, the founding date for NOAA is Feb. 9th 1970, by President Richard Nixxon. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.81.40.95 (talk) 13:52, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Shushugah: Most "corrections" posted to our help pages are wrong. Don't encourage posters with unsourced claims to edit against well cited statements in our articles. The article source at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration#History is [5] from the official website. It says: "Effective October 3, 1970 ... Hi[edit]

Hi all! I am user CoryGlee days been since I am hospitalised with COVID-19. I was today given my cellphone. Improving. These days served me to know how much I appreciate everysingle one of you without exception. 186.143.198.12 (talk) 14:28, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried using the Wikipedia App? Get well soon! GoingBatty (talk) 14:58, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Thank you for your good wishes. No I had never heard of it before. Checking it right now. If an app, hope my cellphone supports it. Cheers! 186.143.198.12 (talk) 15:08, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Cory, will your hospital let you use a laptop? We can figure out a way to get one to you. -Arch dude (talk) 16:38, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude oh my God thank you so much I am in the Republic of Argentina. I do have one... indeed that is my only computer but the parishioner (is that the word in English) will first check with the team of doctors because of all the apparatuses around me. Does it bother you if I keep you updated? 186.143.198.12 (talk) 17:09, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you will be able to use it. Electrically and electronically, it almost certainly poses less total risk than your cell phone. Physically, it may get in the way more. If the hospital does not provide WIFI, you will probably need to "tether" the laptop to your phone so the phone provides internet access for the laptop. Please keep us posted, we can share your joys and frustrations even if we cannot help you any other way. This is only slightly beyond the remit of the help desk: we are after all trying to help you edit Wikipedia. However, feel free to use my user talk page if this conversation becomes extensive. -Arch dude (talk) 17:30, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In case you don't know, the bottom of pages in the mobile version have a "Desktop" link to switch to the desktop version of the site. Many editors prefer it even on a small smartphone screen. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:04, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To all kind people who responded to me, I will try my best with my devices because i am an idiot, a stupid and useless individual when it comes to technology... if my saturation of oxygen in blood remains stable I am sent home Tuesday according to Dr who told me minutes ago now 4.28pm Argentina time. Find transclusions of a template selected by number of parameters[edit]

Is there a way to find the transclusions of a template with a specific number of parameters? Case in question: I would like to find the transclusions of Template:For with exactly one parameter. --KnightMove (talk) 15:14, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Trappist the monk (talk) 15:32, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! --KnightMove (talk) 16:05, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved
@KnightMove and Trappist the monk: Note that will produce false-positives if there are additional transclusions within the parameters. It matches {{For|the 1966{{endash}}90 motor rifle division|36th Motor Rifle Division}} at 36th Rifle Division (which uses two parms). I don't seem to be able to come up with a solution. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 07:10, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Handball notability[edit]

Is there any notability guidelines on handball players? I wanted to make the players for the 2021 World Men's Handball Championship but I cannot find notability guidelines for handball. Thanks. Kline | vroom vroom 20:28, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Kline: I don't think there are any specifically for handball players (the only mention I could find of "handball" at Wikipedia:Notability (sports) was about Gaelic handball). So I would suggest that WP:SPORTBASIC and WP:GNG would be useful guidelines here. There have, however, been some discussions in the talk pages of that notability guideline here: Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports)/Archive 32#Handball, Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports)/Archive 24#Handball, Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports)/Archive 25#Handball criteria, Wikipedia talk:Notability (sports)/Archive 28#Handball - these may be of interest to you as well. Seagull123 Φ 20:41, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Seagull123: This was actually pretty useful! Seems like what most people propose I'd be able to make the articles (as long as I pass WP:GNG). Thanks! Kline | vroom vroom 20:48, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Stylized in...[edit]

Twice in the last few days, I've seen articles that contain intro text that reads something like "Stylized in all caps" or whatever. The two examples are Sophie (musician) and Drivers license (song) with all caps and all lower case, respectively. The articles don't make any effort to actually use that style. Yet the article for eBay which is stylized with a lower initial letter uses that lower initial letter throughout the article. Why is there a discrepancy? Is the rule not hard and fast? †dismas†|(talk) 22:04, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Dismas: See Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Trademarks#Indicating stylizations. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:11, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dismas I went ahead and added the stylizations into the lead text, but yeah what PrimeHunter linked to. Fredlesaltique (talk) 01:27, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
