syntax highlight tag syntax?[edit]

I've never used the syntax highlight tag. I found this by another editor elsewhere on the page. What is wrong with it?

" <syntaxhighlight>comm <(editors.py article1 | sort | uniq) <(editors.py article2 | sort | uniq)</syntaxhighlight>"?

I think it is putting the Help Desk into Category:Pages_with_syntax_highlighting_errors RudolfRed (talk) 01:21, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Needs a lang= attribute. See mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight.

Creating a svg map[edit]

I want to replace old svg maps to an updated new version in some articles (Vaccine Maitri). Can someone guid me how to create a map in svg format, in that I can fill a colour in some specific countries? Thanks in advance! Dinesh | Talk 08:03, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, dineshswamiin. I don't know anything about making maps in Wikipedia, but WP:Maps for Wikipedia may direct you to the right place. --ColinFine (talk) 12:34, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect significant figures[edit]

Cotton candy#History says that the first commercial sale of cotton candy was offered "at 25¢ (equivalent to $7.2 in 2020) per box." This is wrong, because nobody ever writes "$7.2" without the second decimal digit. How can it be fixed? I don't know how to affect the way the template gives this information. I tried changing {{Inflation|index=US|value=0.25|start_year=1904|fmt=eq|r=2}} from "0.25" to "0.250" in hopes that it would give three significant figures, but it still said $7.2. I tried changing the last parameter from r=2 to r=3, but instead of giving three digits like I expected (7.20), it gave three digits after the decimal, $7.201. What can be changed to force it to give two digits after the decimal? 122.150.71.249 (talk) 09:46, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The template has a section in its documentation that appears to suggest wrapping it in {{format price}} in situations like that: Template:Inflation#Format price... though when I boldly added that I needed to remove parameters (the fmt being eq) from the template and rephrase the parenthetical for it to properly appear with the cents. Unclear why the significant figures don't work, might be the way a module or other part of the template is coded or needs to function? I dunno. - Purplewowies (talk) 10:03, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Anthropocene - dating[edit]

I would suggest looking at circa 1814 as a start date. The population of the earth is relative stable up to about then - as far as we can tell from geologic markers. But in about 1814 something happened and the curve of human population skyrocketed. I think an exploration of that time period, what may have caused the spike we’re now in and what geological changes can be notably traced to that change, could be very helpful in dating this period of history. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.223.185.99 (talk) 12:33, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I assume this relates to the article Anthropocene. If it is a comment about how Wikipedia should cover the concept, then please discuss it on the talk page Talk:Anthropocene. If it is a call for a change in historical paradigms, then I'm afraid that there is nowhere on Wikipedia where that is appropriate: this is an encyclopaedia, not an advocacy site. --ColinFine (talk) 12:39, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bot Password[edit]

I created a bot password from Special:BotPasswords. But, I cannot use it. What is the procedure? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:36, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what exactly you are having problems with but the guidance at WP:BOTPOL may be of help, if you've not already read it. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:58, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Itcouldbepossible: If you're using Huggle, you don't need a bot password (I even asked at the Wikipedia Discord and they said to not bother with one) ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:07, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Blaze Wolf@Michael D. Turnbull Got it thanks. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 15:02, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for a script...[edit]

I want to access the page User:CX Zoom/Where can I help at a single click, preferably by adding a link at the top of the screen beside sandbox or at the left side of the screen under "Contribute". Is there a script to achieve that? ---CX Zoom(he/him) (let's talk|contribs) 16:27, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@CX Zoom I personally use User:BrandonXLF/PortletLinks, whic provides a GUI for adding links to your sidebar and portlet bar. You can also just add a JS snippet if you prefer to do it manually. — Berrely • TalkContribs 16:45, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You can add the below to your common JavaScript. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:47, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
$.when( mw.loader.using( ['mediawiki.util'] ), $.ready ).done( function() {
  mw.util.addPortletLink(
    'p-personal',
    mw.util.getUrl( 'User:CX Zoom/Where can I help' ),
    'Help',
    'pt-help',
    'Where can I help',
    null,
    '#pt-preferences'
  );
});
I personally use the superjump script, but there are a lot of options. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 21:36, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Changing a comment after the fact[edit]

Should a user change their comment after the fact as was done here? Please {{ping}} me when you reply. --Jax 0677 (talk) 17:10, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jax 0677: See WP:TALK#REVISE. It's generally best not to edit your own talk page comments in a way that significantly alters the meaning. You can use strikethrough or similar to make clear that you want to say something different.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 17:39, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ianmacm: That's not what I"m getting from what you linked. What you linked says this about editing comments before someone has replied to them: "So long as no one has yet responded to your comment, it's accepted and common practice that you may continue to edit your remarks for a short while to correct mistakes, add links or otherwise improve them." ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:42, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jax 0677: I don't see anything wrong with doing so since the discussion is still live and the were simply clarifying their own response. If they had changed your comment or they changed their comment after the discussion closed then there would be a problem. However what they're doing here seems perfectly fine. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:40, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jax 0677: It's fine: there hasn't been a comment made in response to it before the change, and the section hasn't been closed. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:38, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Editing own comments says Once others have replied, or even if no one's replied but it's been more than a short while, if you wish to change or delete your comment, it is commonly best practice to indicate your changes., followed some guidlines including the use of <del>...</del> and <ins>...</ins>. I vaguely recall some text about using <s>...</s> and <u>...</u> for the same purpose. --Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 00:57, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Creating an article[edit]

Need to change the title of an article[edit]

Hello all,

An article was created for a painting which was previously attributed to Artemisia Gentileschi: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_and_Potiphar%27s_Wife_(Artemisia_Gentileschi,_1620-1623)

This work is in the Fogg Museum at Harvard, and the work is now attributed to Paolo Finoglia, per the museum's website: https://harvardartmuseums.org/collections/object/228639?position=1

How can I change the article's title to remove the reference to Gentileschi?

Thanks in advance for your support Isaksenk (talk) 19:41, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Isaksenk. Please follow the procedure explained at Wikipedia:Moving a page. Cullen328 (talk) 19:44, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@IsaksenkOn Wikipedia, we have to move pages to rename them. The article should be moved to Joseph and Potiphar's Wife (Finoglia) and the entry at Joseph and Potiphar's Wife updated. Pages that link to Joseph and Potiphar's Wife (Artemisia Gentileschi, 1620-1623)) should be updated as well, but the move will create a redirect, so readers who click on a link to the former article will be sent to the right place. You should be able to perform the move yourself. Look in the menu under Page > Move. Vexations (talk) 19:56, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Cullen328 & Vexations - appreciate your support! Isaksenk (talk) 08:40, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Isaksenk, I have asked a similar question at Commons:Commons:Help desk#Reattributed painting to see if the file name for the image should be changed. TSventon (talk) 11:21, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks TSventon for the follow-through! Isaksenk (talk) 17:45, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A google link for a page redirecting to another completely different page[edit]

When searched in Google, the article School Council shows its right content, but redirects to Students' union when entered. May be this is because the original page for School Council is a redirect page for Students' union. But I have deleted the redirect command in School Council but the issue still persist. I don't know what to do. The two articles are different. It is very annoying for readers who want to read about that article. Please help to fix this issue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by နေနီဝန်း (talkcontribs) 19:50, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@နေနီဝန်း: It's unclear which Google search you make, what you see (others may get different Google results for the same search), what you think is "right content", and how you "entered" something. I don't know what your complaint is about but we don't let Google determine our content. If your post is about a box at the right of a Google search with a link to Wikipedia then see Template:HD/GKG. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:20, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

:@PrimeHunter:Thank you for your reply. I mean, when I searched for "School Council", one of the results from Google show the School Council which is what I search. But when I enter it, it is redirected to Students' union which is not what I search. Here is the link; https://www.google.com/search?q=school+council&oq=&aqs=chrome.0.35i39i362l15.-1j0j7&client=ms-android-oppo-rev1&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8 |I've already deleted the redirect template from the original page of School Council. But it still redirecting to Students' union if search and enter through Google . I apologize for my disruption if my words are inappropriate or bad. — Preceding unsigned comment added by နေနီဝန် (talkcontribs)

Works exactly like it should for me. You click on the link to School Council it takes you to School COuncil. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:37, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@နေနီဝန်း: As mentioned, others may get different Google results for the same search. I don't see anyhting from School Council. Do you see text from that article at google.com? What do you mean by "I enter it"? Do you click a link on the Google page as you are supposed to? That's how search engines work. Or do you write something in Wikipedia's search box after seeing a Wikipedia result at Google? That's not the idea of a search engine, and the result will depend on what exactly you write. You said you searched for "School Council" but then gave a Google search on "school council" so your casing is inconsistent. Lowercase school council was a redirect to Students' union before you edited it. It is currently a disambiguation page which includes a link to uppercase School Council. Wikipedia page names are case sensitive except for the first character. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:51, 29 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Also bear in mind that search engines only update their results every few weeks, so it may not reflect recent changes to Wikipedia. We have no control over search engine results or how often they are updated.--Shantavira|feed me 09:33, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
