Adding CO2 emissions data to existing Climate Data tables for towns/cities[edit]

I've developed a plugin for wikipedia climate data tables for towns/cities eg. the table at : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiff#Climate

It takes the form of a piece of javascript code, that when added to a town/city page : > scans for an existing wiki climate data table on the page for that location > grabs all the mean temperatures for each month > calculates the heating/cooling energy requirements for those temperatures > creates an extra line onto the existing table with the calculated CO2 tonnes figure displayed

@Chrischarleswiki: unless you have information about a community's energy sources, you cannot properly make this conversion. For heating: does the community use natrual gas, electricity, or wood? For electrical heating ans cooling, how is the electricity generated? For example, a community in Norway or Quebec province in Canada using electricity will have mimimal CO2 emissions because the electricity is mostly hydro. A community in Poland using electricity from coal will have a emissions. A community in Scotland that is still burning peat will have higher emissions, etc. I do not feel that you should add the information until you can account for this. -Arch dude (talk) 15:39, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]


-Arch dude (talk) You are very correct, I've added your suggestion "energy source" to the "future_improvement_suggestions.txt" file, as an extra factor involved.

In addition to your good suggestion, there are many other factors too beyond climate data - "GDP per capita of a town/city", "level of home insulation", "density of people per square mile" for examples. There are even factors with the temperatures themselves - "diurnal variations", "sun hours". The "midpoint" between heating and cooling also varies by country (18C in USA, 15.5C in UK!)

As with many global warming issues, there seems to be surprisingly very little granular data around on CO2 emissions and they're associated factors. I've listed the references and available data used to determine the temperatures -> CO2 formula in the "online_references.txt" in case it's useful to anyone in the future. The data used was in a USA context only (limited global data available), and this adds another factor involved in calculation.

My wording should also perhaps of been clearer that any emissions figure was only in a climate data context, with all other factors being excluded.

  • That sounds really far out in the realm of original research to me. Your code necessarily will make significant assumptions about a CO2 emission model etc. Those might be very reasonable individually or on the aggregate, but it does not fall under WP:CALC anymore, so you need a source - in that case a robust scientific consensus for the calculation - before including it in the articles (it would likely be labelled "estimated heating emissions with methodology XYZ").
You could of course make a javascript module / browser add-on that interested readers could add / install so that their own display shows those numbers. I do not think anyone would object to you hosting that on Wikimedia pages. But I certainly would oppose adding those numbers to the page itself. Flora of Malta not displaying reference list[edit]

Hi all

I've been working on the article Flora of Malta and have spent a lot of time collating a list and finding a reference for each. However when I published it it seems as though there is some kind of problem with the references and they are not listed. Is there a limit on the number? All the references I've added are specific pages from the main source on plants in Malta, perhaps there is another way of doing it?

Also is there a way to automatically pull the images from each article into the tables so it can be used as an identification guide?

@John Cummings: - You'll need to split the article up. Suggest a separated article per letter, unless there are a only a few entries under a particular letter, in which case combine them. The lists linked from {{Empire ships}} will serve as an example. Some letters had so many entries they were split, other letters were combined. The original article can stay to provide links to the articles split off, as has been done with the List of shipwrecks in 1879. Mjroots (talk) 13:22, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Trappist the monk is there a way of knowing how much over the limit it is? I could reduce the number of bytes of the article in a couple of ways that would be pretty simple. What does "anonymize URLs" mean and how do you do it?[edit]

Editors frequently make changes to Wikipedia text to "anonymize URLs." What does that mean? Is there any Wikipedia policy/procedure/guideline on how and when to do it? David Biddulph here is an example where citation bot has changed google.co.uk to google.com, with the summary "Alter: url. URLs might have been anonymized". TSventon (talk) 14:27, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, citation bot is changing links from the UK version of google bots, to the international version. I can't say we particularly have a policy on this, but probably fine to not regionalise the urls. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:30, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@BuzzWeiser196: "URLs might have been anonymized" can mean that the edit removed hints in a url about who added it or in which circumstances. In this case it was likely a user in the UK who originally added a link to google.co.uk instead of google.com. Another type of change is mentioned in Template:Citation Style documentation/url (displayed in various template documentations): "Remove tracking parameters from URLs, e.g. #ixzz2rBr3aO94 or ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=...&utm_term=...&utm_campaign=..." Mis-identified image of Russell Gleason[edit]

Hi there,

I tried to edit a mistake on the page for the actor Russell Gleason.

The image that shows the lobbycard for the movie 'The Covered Wagon' mis-identifies the actor as Russell Gleason with Mary Beth Hughes. It actually is a lobbycard of Maurice Murphy and Mary Beth Hughes.

Mass change of link across Wikipedia[edit]

Hi, I wish to move a certain page from X → Y, After doing so, I wish to delete the page X entirely. Because of this, any page previously linking to X would show up as a red link. As you aren't an administrator, you do not have the technical ability to delete pages (unless under incredibly small circumstances are met), so I wouldn't worry about it. @Lee Vilenski and Orangemike: Basically I wish to reorganize my Userpages listed here and delete their current locations to remove the huge number of resultant redirects. The problem is that some Userpages were involved in prior discussions in various talk pages as a link, as a transclusion or even as a standalone template and I wish them to exist even after deleting their current page. @CX Zoom: Moving every page there would not produce a "huge" number of redirects. It's easier for everybody and the servers to just leave redirects so old links, including in page histories, don't break. Transclusions also work with redirects. Why don't you want redirects? If you get an administrator to help you move pages without leaving a redirect and you want links to continue working anyway then every page with a broken link must be edited. AWB can do that faster than manual edits if there are many links, but mass changing links because you don't want redirects seems close to being disruptive. If an admin moves the pages without leaving a redirect then the red link will display a log with a link to the new name like User:TamsinConey/sandbox. Transclusions will fail. @Spacemud1: The references you give aren't reliable. In Celebzbiography's "About Us" page, they claim, in bold lettering, [they] do not guarantee/claim that the information [they] have gathered is 100% correct. Instagram pages are generally external links (if appropriate), but rarely, if ever, references as they're almost always considered primary sources, while Wikipedia generally uses secondary ones. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:49, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a biography[edit]

I'd like to add a biography about myself to Wikipedia. How do I go about it? I was involved in politics and governments. The sites I see about governmental officials show things like preceded in office and succeeded in office. I don't know how to do that. Is that something you do? Do I create the page or submit it to you for formatting and publication? Thanks for your help. Hi, Rick. In general it's best not to write WP:Autobiography articles, and you should realize that having a Wikipedia article about yourself is not a pure positive. You have zero control over it. Everything that has been said about you in reliable sources, including the things you'd rather people forgot, is fair game, and you have no control over what is and isn't included. Everything valereee said is correct. Your first hurdle is WP:GNG. What references do you have that are at the same time reliably published (WP:RS), independent of you and about you in some detail? Assuming you're the Majority Leader from the 77th W V House of Delegates Rick Staton, there should already be an article about you, one of decent length. The problem is that we don't have anybody obsessed with writing about members of the House of Delegates, the way me and a couple of my homies are about our Wisconsin legislature (I've created or majorly edited several hundred articles on members of both houses). In an ideal world, somebody either from your state historical society or from the legislature's staff could tackle this, as there appear to be thousands of Mountaineer legislators without articles. Experienced Wikipedians with subject-matter expertise have been known to accept short-term contracts as "Wikipedians in Residence" to help and coach staff in such projects. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:19, 4 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance with EasyTable[edit]

Hello, I have an Easy Timeline in an article I contributed to, Eastern Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association. It has an EasyTimeline which, at the time of first publish, rendered properly but with a warning that it was invalid. For the past few months, however, rather than rendering it just says "Invalid image map generated by EasyTimeline" -- can anyone help me fix it?
