January 22[edit]

Wikipedia's New Format[edit]

I hate it. It looks like a webpage from the early 2000s. Is there a way to revert back to the previous layout? Thank you. 2601:640:8A80:27E0:CC1D:2B4E:B82:9B68 (talk) 00:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you create an account, you can choose the older skin in your account preferences. To learn more about the new skin, please see WP:VECTOR2022. 331dot (talk) 00:25, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Created an account and reverted.
Thank you for the prompt reply.  :) Treetop193 (talk) 00:29, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Funny, my problem is that it doesn't look like a webpage from the early 2000s. Tux9001 (talk) 17:24, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hide Toggle button[edit]

What is the css code to hide the Toggle button at the bottom right of pages. Aaron106 (talk) 00:27, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Aaron106 Hi there! See Wikipedia:Vector 2022#How can editors change and customize this skin? GoingBatty (talk) 01:50, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find anything there on how to do it Aaron106 (talk) 02:07, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aaron106: Take this with a grain of salt, but try adding:
.webfonts-changed.vector-limited-width-toggle.mw-ui-button.mw-ui-icon-element.mw-ui-icon {
        display:none;
    }
to your custom CSS. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 02:55, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tenryuu Hi this didn't work :( I added it to vector-2022.css but the toggle button still shows. Aaron106 (talk) 03:09, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's really strange; I tried it and it worked for me. Did you copy it exactly as is, including the semicolon in the second line? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Tenryuu If you take a look in my revision history go to my vector-2022.css and see if its ok. Aaron106 (talk) 03:20, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aaron106: I can't edit it, but what's probably messing things up is that you're missing a ; at the end of the second line for a. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:23, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
example

Tenryuu I've tried but I can't fix it, maybe i'm not adding it in the right place. If you copy and paste my CSS here and correct it I will add it back in so it should be right. Aaron106 (talk) 03:36, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go:
.webfonts-changed.vector-limited-width-toggle.mw-ui-button.mw-ui-icon-element.mw-ui-icon {
        display:none;
    }

 a {
    color: #0645ad;
}
a:visited {
    color: #58219a;
}
That should fix things. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:41, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately the Toggle content width button at the bottom right is still there, I wonder why it's not working for me Aaron106 (talk) 03:45, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If all else fails, you can install an adblocker extension (depending on which browser you're using) and block the element (usually by navigating the cursor to it and right-clicking→Block element). —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:51, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've done that but just wanted to see if it could be done on CSS, maybe i'll stumple upon on a different code that could work sometime soon. Aaron106 (talk) 03:56, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Preview button in old skin[edit]

Can someone please tell me the reason for the appearance of a Preview button in the old Vector skin. It merely results in a useless “preview” beside the edit screen, now reduced to half width. Downsize43 (talk) 06:14, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Downsize43 For source editors, it shows what their changes will look like on the page, in real time; much as the Visual Editor does. You don't have to use it; I don't usually, but have occasionally found it helpful with complex formatting. Bazza (talk) 09:57, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Downsize43 (talk) 11:24, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Bazza: How can I turn it off permanently. It is causing Microsoft Edge to stop responding when I try to edit an article with a very large table in it. Cheers. Downsize43 (talk) 02:36, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

New Format[edit]

Hey Wikipedia, just wanted to let you know that your new format looks terrible and I personally think you should stop funding these corporate design think tanks to change what already works. How can I change the format to what it once was? 70.60.251.131 (talk) 08:06, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking about a sudden change to Wikipedia's appearance? It is because the default skin has changed from the Vector legacy (2010) skin to the new Vector (2022) skin. If you would like to change back to the old one, you can, as a registered user, click on the in the top-right corner and choose Preferences. Once there, go to Preferences → Appearance → Skins → check Vector legacy (2010).
If you would like to leave feedback, you can do so at Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022. - David Biddulph (talk) 08:54, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

not my photo[edit]

the photo on my wiki page is not me. I am Art Baltazar cartoonist. somehow the photo was changed. the photo that used to be there was correst. current photo is not me. can you please fix. thanks ART 2601:246:5380:8BE0:B4C3:F7A1:A2B7:2F2B (talk) 08:10, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: here we have an IP editor claiming to be Art Baltazar. On the Teahouse, the same day, we have MatMar555 using "Art Baltazar" as his signature. Coincidence? Maproom (talk) 09:16, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello ! I am MatMar and I have never heard of Art Baltazar (sorry!) prior to this message, and I did not use this a my signature. I don't even know what this is all about. MatMar555 (talk) 13:28, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom Not a coincidence, since you were the one who made that change, presumably unintentionally. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:54, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that must be been my own incompetent use of cut-and-paste, now reverted. My apologies to MatMar555, and my thanks to Michael D. Turnbull.   Maproom (talk) 15:44, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
With warmest regards to all! 173.246.30.83 (talk) 15:54, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I like the new appearance[edit]

Since the people who don't like the new skin are, of course, going to say they don't like it, I thought I would give some balance and say that I like it. David10244 (talk) 08:45, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@David10244 Hi there! The proper place to leave feedback on the new skin is Wikipedia talk:Vector 2022. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:12, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fun Fact! The new skin was made default because it was known that users would hate it, so they would register a new account to change it back. [Joke] Club On a Sub 20 (talk) 17:52, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do I make link to sections of an article inside the article itself?[edit]

Hello.

I have been working on Heresy in the Catholic Church. In the summary, I tried to make two hyperlinks to the section § Formal and material heresy, of the article, at the text "formal heresy" and "material heresy". However, whatever I do nothing works. Could someone help? Veverve (talk) 09:16, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There's a new bug, see WP:ANCHOR. It works if you omit the page name, so I've done that. - David Biddulph (talk) 09:25, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Add xtools authorship to Template:GAR/header[edit]

I'm struggling to figure out how to add a link to the {{GAR/header}}. I'd like to add a link to the authorship tool of xtools to ease with notifying major contributors to articles (step 5 of WP:GAR), but I don't understand the syntax of subst and includeonly. I'd like to see, for instance, a link to [1] for Economic development in India, added to the list. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 10:13, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Save PDF[edit]

How do I save the page as PDF now Wikipedia has been changed? 94.196.192.228 (talk) 14:01, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Download as PDF" is still there for me, in the menu at the top left. ColinFine (talk) 15:50, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - now I know where to find it, I see it - much appreciated! 94.196.192.228 (talk) 22:14, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

need help with opening a Request for Comments[edit]

The question is whether the changes made by user:Walter Tau on 2023-01-21 in article MDPI are "promotional materials" , as claimed by user:Crawdaunt or statistical updates. The numbers cited in the older (and currently reverted) version of the article are outdated. https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MDPI&oldid=prev&diff=1135047438 Walter Tau (talk) 14:10, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Walter Tau I don't think you need to open a formal RfC yet: just bring up your concerns on Talk:MDPI to begin with: I see you've had WP:BRD discussions there previously. There are plenty of people watching that article, which does seem to have more than its fair share of {{paid}} and {{coi}} editors. The issue about the stats will probably boil down to whether there are reliable sources for the change. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:46, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your note. I've never been involved in disputes on wiki, so I am not familiar with this process. I feel, that my changes are fully appropriate, well-referenced, and they provide an updated information on the topic. Thus, they should be approved.
I do not recall having BDRs. I also see, that "BRD is best used by experienced Wikipedia editors."
I do not consider myself an "experienced Wikipedia editor". For this reason, i am trying to find another way to resolve the controversy between user:Crawdaunt and user:Walter Tau . Walter Tau (talk) 19:02, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
For the sake of full disclosure, I am neither PAID nor HAVE CLOSE CONNECTIONS. I have never published with or reviewed for MDPI. But I serve on a university library committee, that deals with the topic of this article. Walter Tau (talk) 19:06, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Walter Tau, it sounds to me as if you're seeing this as trying to get "approval" from some authority. That's not how (most of) Wikipedia works. What you are trying to do is get consensus for your changes. Remember that, vandalism aside, every editor who makes (or reverts) a change believes that their edits are improvements; so asserting "this should be approved" is not often very effective. You need to persuade others that your edits are an improvement - and it helps to listen to the arguments of those who disagree. (I'm taking no position on the particular issues or the discussion so far dispute - I haven't looked at them. I'm suggesting a way of working in general). ColinFine (talk) 19:47, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Display name change[edit]

Hello, I plan on adding content/profile to my page, but before I do I wanted to ask if my user name is my displayed name? How can I change it? If not should I create a new account correctly? I created this original profile 7 years ago, so if I create a new one is there any aging benefit to stick with and correct the original? --Brianfried (talk) 14:43, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by "my page"? What do you mean by "this original profile"? Is this even about Wikipedia? I fear that you think this is Facebook or some other site. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:53, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Brianfried If I understand things correctly (I may not have done) you created this account on 1 May 2016 but didn't make any edits from it until today (unless some were revision-deleted which I can't see). That's perfectly OK. You can click on the currently redlink to your account name and you'll be able to create your User Page. Please read WP:UPYES for the sorts of things editors can put on their User Page. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:53, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

unable to log into page[edit]

I am unable to log into my wiki page that was created few years ago. please help? 79.72.155.134 (talk) 15:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Asked and answered at the Teahouse. IP user: please don't post the same question in multiple places. ColinFine (talk) 16:00, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Annamalai Kuppusamy[edit]

Hi, You have salted Annamalai Kuppusamy due to repeated creation of the page after Multiple deletion as the article fail meet Wikipedia:Notability. currently he is president of BJP for the Indian state of Tamilnadu. A State level politician who had received significant press coverage since then. Can you please remove page creation protection, So that Annamalai Kuppusamy can be reviewed again. Thankyou Perumalism (talk) 18:26, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since what you're pointing at is a draft, the immediate issue is not the salting, but the fact that the draft has been rejected: if you can persuade reviewers that there has been sufficient new material published to make him notable, then the salting will not be an issue.
There is a link on the Reject notice "Ask for Advice" which is the best place to ask. Make sure you read WP:NPOLITICIAN and the deletion discussions first, so that you know what is required and can present the sources that will make the difference. ColinFine (talk) 19:58, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your website.[edit]

Are you aware that the opening page of your website does not now have a place where one can type an item to SEARCH?23:15, 22 January 2023 (UTC)~~ 2600:1700:53B0:19CF:A825:F53E:82C8:EFF3 (talk) 23:15, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The search box has moved to top left. ColinFine (talk) 23:31, 22 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What? The search bar's at the top of every page. If you scroll down you might get a sticky header, at which point you can open the search bar by clicking the icon in the top-left corner. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:06, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It’s because they switched to a new skin. You can go back to Vector 2010 without having to register an account, though. All you have to do is reconfigure your browser firewall to an adaptive parsing framework and the interface will default to the old one. Serratra (talk) 02:23, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Serratra I assume that's some sort of joke. Few readers will have any idea what an "adaptive parsing framework" is and having Googled it I'm not the much wiser.... Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:03, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
