March 13[edit]

Received an email saying I requested a deactivation of my account[edit]

Account Security <donna at xxxxxx.xx.xx>

You recently made a request to Deactivate xxxxx at xxxxxx.xx.xx as at 02/08/2023. This request will be processed shortly. If you did not make this request, kindly cancel the request now. Cancel Deactivation

User: xxxxx at xxxxxx.xx.xx . To control which emails we send you, check your preferences Wikimedia Foundation, 1 Montogimery Street, Suite 1800, San Francisco, CA 94104, USA

Not sure where that came from and thought it might either be a scam or I was hacked.

The email address that this came from was my own domain, and I DO NOT have a Donna in that grouping

Changing the password today, but how do I check if this is legit?

Yes, I checked my notifications, and there is nothing in there.

Thanks.

Papa Dingo (talk) 00:14, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Papa Dingo: This is a phishing attempt to get you to fill in your login credentials on a page owned by the scammer. As far as I know, there isn't any way to "deactivate" your account on Wikipedia. Emails from the Wikimedia Foundation will show a proper domain name. ~Anachronist (talk) 00:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
One clue is that the Foundation's address is misspelled. 331dot (talk) 00:21, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ha. "Montogimery" street. Scammer emails are rarely perfectly crafted, you can always find something wrong that gives them away. ~Anachronist (talk) 00:24, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Anachronist I used to work close to 1 Montogimery St. in San Francisco -- my office was at 1 Califronai St., just a few blocks up Mkaret St. from Montogimery St. Small world... David10244 (talk) 08:07, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Thought so. Papa Dingo (talk) 09:41, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia accounts cannot be "deactivated", It's probably a scam, maybe to get you to click "cancel" and pick up a virus or something. 331dot (talk) 00:20, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest that you forward that scam email to legal@wikimedia.org. Cullen328 (talk) 00:29, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Papa Dingo: It's definitely a scam. I haven't heard this one before and don't know whether the goal is to take over your Wikipedia account, get you to reveal your username, try to infect you with a virus, or something else. I strongly recommend you do NOT click the link to find out what they try to do. Maybe they mail random email addresses and don't know whether you actually have a Wikipedia account. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:44, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I never click on links that are questionable. Query Everything is my belief Papa Dingo (talk) 09:44, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Will do. How do I now show this is answered? Papa Dingo (talk) 09:46, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Papa Dingo I have added the {{resolved}} template below the section heading to notify others that this section is resolved. Old sections will be automatically archived in a few days. Victor Schmidt (talk) 09:53, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cite news with multiple URLs[edit]

Citation #5 in SsangYong Rodius goes to [1]. (It went to [2] until a minute ago, but I used the archived URL as the original's gone rotten.) Unfortunately, some of the information to which this is cited isn't exactly on the page, but on a linked subpage. Of course I could create a separate citation for that information, but since they're intimately related (they're a single document, split apparently because they'd be too long for a single page), I'd like to link both this page and the subpage in the same citation. How do I do this in the existing {{cite news}}-based citation? I never use citation templates (much easier to construct a citation manually, especially in this kind of situation), so I'm not familiar with this template, and its documentation didn't say anything about the idea of providing multiple links. Nyttend (talk) 05:50, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Nyttend Welcome to Help Desk! You should use multiple citations, but you can group them together using WP:CITEBUNDLE. Happy editing! Also, I would not squeeze body of text between left and right aligned images. It makes it hard to read ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 09:21, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing errors on Draft:Li Fu Lee[edit]

Reference help requested. What is the correct citation template for this: [3]? The Qwerfjkl bot says that I need to put the name of the journal/magazine that the article appears in, but I'm not sure. Thanks, FunnyMath (talk) 06:32, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@FunnyMath welcome to help desk! I changed it to use Template: cite thesis ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 08:38, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect number showing on right hand sidebar[edit]

In some cases when I search using a search engine for La Hougue Bie, I get a Wikipedia right hand sidebar with details about the site come up. But hte number for La Hougue Bie on the pull out on the right hand search is incorrect, how do I change this, because the number should be +44 (0)1534 853 823 but when I go to the Wiki page I cannot find a telephone number to edit. With my thanks Helen 87.244.76.135 (talk) 09:45, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. The same feedback facility is also provided on Bing and some other search engines. Victor Schmidt (talk) 09:50, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) This is a problem with Google, not with Wikipedia. I've just searched for La Hougue Bie using both Google and DuckDuckGo. Only Google has the number. Where they are getting it from is known only to Google, you'll need to contact them. There is a "suggest an edit" field in the sidebar, you could give that a try. @Vusi vilanculos You can edit almost any article but those you should edit are those where you are certain you are making improvements to the encyclopaedia, perhaps owing to your own knowledge and experience. Right hand Summary when using search engine[edit]

See screen shot link https://capture.dropbox.com/GwQQFKe9C06EOZ1T this info being pulled from wikipedia is incorrect....how do i correct it when there is no phone number on the la hougue bie page on wikipedia....? Helengrayjerseyheritage (talk) 10:49, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Search engines pull information for these from many sources, not just Wikipedia. You'll have to find a way to send feedback to Ecosia, as this has nothing to do with Wikipedia. ■ ∃ Madeline ⇔ ∃ Part of me ; 10:52, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Helengrayjerseyheritag. I've left a message for you on your talk page. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 11:55, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Helengrayjerseyheritage: Some search engines have a "Feedback" or similar link at the end of such boxes. The screenshot is cut off before the end and I don't get the box myself on searches at ecosia.org so I don't know whether they have that feature. The only content which can be assumed to be taken from Wikipedia is a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia". Other sections don't mention their sources. This confusing system is used by many search engines. See Template:HD/GKG for a stock answer. Wikipedia almost never displays phone numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:14, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

No sources available/Ref query[edit]

Hello. I am trying to amend or remove information about a proposed project which did not go ahead on a page about my workplace wiki page.

The project has been mothballed, but the mods reinstated the information and requested a reference for its discontinuation. No such public reference exists as it was an internal decision on the part of the organisation. The information on the page is therefore misleading.

Could somebody advise on how to resolve this? Thank you. GladstonesLibrary (talk) 12:03, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"The mods", GladstonesLibrary? Anyway, if there's some dispute over what to say in the article Gladstone's Library, please discuss the matter at Talk:Gladstone's Library. Additionally, if your work on the article is part of your paid employment, please read Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure carefully and do what it says. -- Hoary (talk) 12:47, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
"mods" refers to Moderator#Internet but Wikipedia doesn't use that term and nobody has the right to control an article. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:27, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Connecting links[edit]

Dear Wikipedia,

I am writing to request that you consider including a link to my website, www.alphagrowl.com, on relevant pages within your site. My website is dedicated to providing everything that the modern alpha male needs, from clothing and fragrances to gadgets, technology, and books.

I believe that my website would be a valuable resource to your readers, and I hope that you will agree. If you require any further information or have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best regards,

Rumi Knoppel 186.179.138.36 (talk) 12:58, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

That's not going to happen, Rumi, as Wikipedia is not a place for promotion of anything. In addition, links from this website are marked no-follow to search engines. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:08, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I note with amusement that alphagrowl.com’s idea of "everything that the modern alpha male needs" includes clothing, fragrances, and books. I guess the "modern alpha male" needs to shop incognito on littlesweetgirl.com to buy his dumbbells and car stickers. Why would an alpha male need any fragrances? We are supposed to smell like MEN! And we don't read, we watch sports on TV and grunt at our alpha male bros. David10244 (talk) 11:23, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"president" or "President"?[edit]

Good afternoon. In this article, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guido_Carli, I noticed that sometimes "president" ("of ...") is used, and sometimes "President" ("of ..."); sometimes in uppercase, sometimes in lowercase. Is there anyone who could tell me whether it's right to write the word in upper or lowercase, or to correct it himself? JackkBrown (talk) 12:58, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: Please see MOS:JOBTITLE; I.e. lowercase as a jobtitle, uppercase when considered part of a name (President Biden). Eagleash (talk) 13:06, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To further the example, you would say "President Biden signed such and such legislation" (used as title, part of name, capitalized), but you would say "Joe Biden was the first president from Delaware" (used as generic job description, lower case). --Jayron32 13:11, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to properly position infobox on mobile view[edit]

I have a page that I want to add an infobox to, but it 's always positioned wrong on the mobile view (above the text instead of below). I fix it, but it then positions wrong on desktop. I've looked through the source code of other pages who have the infobox positioned correctly, but nothing stands out that's different to how I do it. I've been meaning to ask this for a while now, and it bugs me quite a bit, so please answer if you can.

Sincerely, Dontuseurrealname (talk) 18:28, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Dontuseurrealname: Have a look at MOS:INFOBOX. If you need further help, then you need to say which article you are having problems with. Bazza (talk) 19:10, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dontuseurrealname: I personally find MOS:ORDER more helpful. It says that the Infobox (item 1.8) should go before the article content (item 2). Furthermore, part of the footnote for the Infobox reads: On the mobile site, the first paragraph of the lead section is moved above the infobox for the sake of readability, so if it doesn't, please feel free to let us know which page it is, so we can take a look. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 19:18, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's a draft for "505" by Arctic Monkeys. Here is the draft.
Sincerely, Dontuseurrealname (talk) 20:04, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's because the item isn't in mainspace. In draft/userspace it will look like that. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 19:18, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"President"[edit]

Good evening. In this sentence: "On 2 July 2019, the European Council elected Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel as the successor to Donald Tusk as President of the European Council for the period from 1 December 2019 to 31 May 2022. He was re-elected in March 2022 for a second term for the period from 1 June 2022 to 30 November 2024.", "President" should be written in lowercase, or am I wrong (this question is a continuation of the previous one)? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_European_Council. JackkBrown (talk) 18:37, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@JackkBrown: The link you provide above is to an article which starts "The president of the European Council is...", which shows correct case usage according to MOS:JOBTITLE. Feel free to confidently correct any similar usages of "President" which have an upper-case "p". The same goes for "Belgian prime minister Charles Michel" (where "Belgian prime minister" is a description, not a title). Bazza (talk) 19:02, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

(Closed) Someone please fix my timeline template[edit]

I'm trying to make a series of Canadian premier timelines, similar to car make/model timelines, but my first attempt {{Canadian premiers, 1920s}} isn't coming out too well. I tried having a 100-column timeline and adjusting the colspans to be varied accordingly, but the years aren't coming out constant-width as they're supposed to. Not to mention, some cells' borders are funky. As it stands, the template looks like this:

The relative colspans, as I intended for it to look, are already in the code and can be used even if the structure needs to be modified. If possible and feasible, I'd also like any accessibility advice; I'm sure the current version is a nightmare for JAWS. Thanks! – John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 20:31, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • FWIW, replacing all of the entries with asterisks (so, single-character width) fixed the spacing issues (mostly), but not the cell border issues. – John M Wolfson (talk • contribs) 20:55, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

It is a continuation of the previous question, and the one before that: public offices, if not accompanied by a name, should be written in lowercase, so far so clear; why then, in the title of this page, has the public office been written in capitals? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Minister_of_Poland. JackkBrown (talk) 21:01, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because (i) in that instance, it's a job title referring to a particular office, not merely a generic description, and (ii) all article titles are supposed to start with a capital letter, and "Prime minister of Poland" would be odd.
JackkBrown, as a former professional editor andproofreader, I would be the last to deny that some of the stuff you are focussing on is technically incorrect according to the MoS, but none of it is factually misleading, or even noticeable to general readers rather than borderline-OCD detail obsessives like me, and there are more important factual and other deficiencies in many (if not most) of our articles. However, you do you. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.205.108.171 (talk) 21:44, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, JackkBrown, a continuation of a previous question usually doesn't need a new thread. It might of course benefit from one if the new question went off at a tangent from its predecessor, but then the title of the new thread should clearly indicate what the new subject is. -- Hoary (talk) 00:02, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a "Weblink" section to a wiki page?[edit]

I'm trying to find specific directions on how to add a "Weblink" section to wiki pages missing them and can't seem to find any reference or information on how to do so either manually or using a template?

Heideana (talk) 21:22, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

On Engish Wikipedia that section is called "external links" and you can find relevant information at Wikipedia:External links. ■ ∃ Madeline ⇔ ∃ Part of me ; 21:28, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Heideana, as explained in the link above, external links should be used very sparingly and should be limited to links that provide unambiguous benefits to readers. Promotional external links should be ruthlessly deleted on sight. Cullen328 (talk) 07:36, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
