Recent Changes Highlighting[edit]

The highlighting that I use in the filter box of the recent changes page has recently just stopped working as of late and I can't get it to work at all. I have tried changing my prefs and everything. Any ideas? Seawolf35 (talk) 01:39, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@seawolf35: which filters are you highlighting? ltbdl (talk) 11:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am highlighting the edits that hit as bad faith or likely have problems. Seawolf35 (talk) 12:08, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I am experiencing the same issue. It started yesterday or the day before. The first set of changes are visible, but the list doesn't update when "Live Updates" are turned on. I have to "hand-refresh" the page to get a new set of changes. I use the filters
  • Likely Have Problems
  • Human (not bot)
  • Page edits
  • Page creations

Joyous! Noise! 13:38, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Seawolf35 I suspect that this is something to do with a change mentioned in the current Tech News. I quote:
  • ORES, the revision evaluation service, is now using a new open-source infrastructure on all wikis except for English Wikipedia and Wikidata. These two will follow this week. If you notice any unusual results from the Recent Changes filters that are related to ORES (for example, "Contribution quality predictions" and "User intent predictions"), please report them. [1]

Can't make edits[edit]

Every time I make edits to the page, the changes get reverted to the older version. 114.143.207.2 (talk) 07:10, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Example:[2] Here you remove a bunch of references, and make the text into an advertisment. Don't do that on Wikipedia, if you want to write commercials, use social media. See also WP:COI. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:26, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Visual editor isn't working anywhere[edit]

Last month, I scrambled my password due to extreme mental health/competence concerns. After my symptoms mostly went away, I created a new account using the same scripts. However, the script installer doesn't seem to show up anywhere, and I can't find the visual editor button where I usually found it. Any ideas why? I use Monobook btw. Scorpions1325 (talk) 10:49, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Scorpions1325: Welcome back! Wikipedia:Script Installer says it is no longer maintained, and recommends that you use User:Enterprisey/script-installer instead. If that's what you're having problems with, I suggest you contact User:Enterprisey. In your Preferences > Editing, have you confirmed that the "Enable the visual editor" box is checked? Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:31, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, it is enabled. Scorpions1325 (talk) 14:47, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

WP:NAUTHOR Criterion #1[edit]

Yesterday I came across the article Herb Sutter through a redirect that's nowhere mentioned in the article and honestly should be deleted. But the longer I look at that page, the more I'm starting to think the entire page should be deleted; currently all of its references are either by Sutter himself or are directly from the organization he works for, and aren't even directly about him (e.g. meeting minutes). Looking up news articles mostly reveals the same thing: numerous ones that mention him or his role, but which are distinctly about the standard his organization's working on instead of him. Okay, wonderful.

The only thing stopping me from pursuing an AFD for this (besides the fact that I can't create pages) is the fact that he's written books and papers, meaning he's an author, and WP:NAUTHOR's first criterion for "creative professional" notability is

1. The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers or successors.

Which if that isn't vague, I don't know what is. How is one supposed to objectively tell if a person counts as an "important figure"? He has a single paper with 1714 citations; does that qualify as "widely cited"? (And given none of his other papers have even half that number of citations, is it really fitting to grant somebody a Wikipedia article for a single paper they wrote 18 years ago when they don't even pass GNG?) All in all, how should I objectively apply that criteria to an article when both requirements seem rather subjective to me?

(And if it turns out this person doesn't meet the criteria and no one else can find coverage actually about him, could someone please create an AFD for it?) 2603:8001:4542:28FB:E56D:1D24:B019:A2E (talk) 14:21, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't look good, and while I'm not hugely familiar with WP:NAUTHOR, it sounds like he doesn't qualify entirely. I would recommend opening a deletion request. Industrial Insect (talk) 18:13, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To answer a few of your points:
  1. The subject of the redirect was mentioned in the article between May of 2018 and October of 2022. The section was removed in this edit with an edit summary of "no indication this notable".
  2. Regarding your question of "How is one supposed to objectively tell if a person counts as an "important figure"?" - this is one of the issues with subject specific notability guidelines. You know if a person is an important figure if reliable sources say they are an important figure. If reliable sources talk about the person and say they are an important figure, the person meets GNG and we don't need that criterion in NAUTHOR.
  3. Regarding not being able to create the AFD subpage, I can help you with that if you want to write your nomination rationale on the talk page and ping me in the comment.

Sock tagging[edit]

How come some admins don't tag sockpuppets? foobarbaz 14:46, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are many reasons. I might suggest you ask at WP:AN. For what reason are you interested in this subject? 331dot (talk) 17:13, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot Sorry for the late reply, but I'm just curious as why. I don't feel like posting on WP:AN because I think it does not belong there "it'll probably be deleted". foobarbaz 22:51, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I just didn't know if something in particular prompted your question. AN is the place to ask admins in general questions, such as why a particular action is not being done. Legitimate questions are not just deleted, but it of course it's up to you how much you want to pursue something. 331dot (talk) 23:10, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Edit[edit]

Hello. My father is on Wiki but it's just a small obit. I have a lot of info I would like to add. He was a PhD and photographer for National Geographic. I would like to add all of his credentials. Can you help me please?? Smitchjack (talk) 17:03, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

 Courtesy link: Robert W. Mitchell - 199.208.172.35 (talk) 17:06, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Smitchjack One of the things that Wikipedia is not is a memorial site. So I hope your father's article is based on reliable sources showing how he is notable as defined here. You can certainly make suggestions to improve the article but in view of your conflict of interest you should not edit directly but make {{edit COI}} requests. You must cite reliable, published sources for anything you want to add. Your own knowledge is not sufficient. The use of that template will alert other editors to your suggestions. Ask again at the Helpdesk or Teahouse if you run into problems. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:11, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Mike. I'm going to have to figure out how to pull his "photo credits" from every book in which he's been published. There are hundreds. 2601:CD:C500:24C0:3577:EE4F:37E7:674B (talk) 21:14, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
IP editor/@Smitchjack, I'm not sure that will be useful information as far as an encyclopedia article goes. Take a look at Ansel Adams, especially the Photographs section, to get an idea of the type and amount of information which should be included. Pick the photos which have gotten the most independent attention and feature those. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:26, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Smitchjack: Hi there! You could also use the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard to request updates to the article. Be sure to provide all the details about the published reliable sources where anyone can verify the information. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 20:45, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so very much.. 2601:CD:C500:24C0:3577:EE4F:37E7:674B (talk) 21:12, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Smitchjack Assuming that you are now the legal copyright holder of some of you father's photographs, by inheritance, you would probably be helping Wikipedia more by uploading a selection of them to Wikimedia Commons under its standard license, so that they could be used in articles and elsewhere by those who wished to do so. Contact me via my Talk Page if you need assistance to do that: I have in the past helped a professional photographer to upload some photos of his, now at Commons:Category:Photographs by Ed Gold. Bibliography of Olver Tambo[edit]

bibliography 41.116.178.4 (talk) 19:36, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Oliver Tambo has no bibliography. What help do you want? 119.245.86.251 (talk) 19:58, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Most articles about authors, like Oliver Tambo, have a box at the bottom labelled "authority control databases". You can open this box (hit the "show" button on the right) to get links to these databases, which provide bibliographies. -Arch dude (talk) 20:18, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Or simply search for Oliver Tambo in Amazon. Shantavira|feed me 08:41, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Moving page from Wikiquote to Wikipedia page[edit]

I created a Wikiquote page with my biography and thought I was creating a Wikipedia page. How can I (or you) move the material from the Wiliquote page to a main Wikipedia page, so that it shows up on a google search? AACSBProfessor (talk) 20:55, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, AACSBProfessor. The article you wrote on Wikiquote is unreferenced and unsuitable for Wikipedia in its current form. Please read Your first article and the Notability guideline for academics. Reading a few biographies of educators at Wikipedia:Good articles/Social sciences and society should give you a sense of what is required. Cullen328 (talk) 21:07, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is also good advice at WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Cullen328 (talk) 21:08, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Also be aware that an article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing. 331dot (talk) 21:11, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If we haven't managed to dissuade you yet, the way you'd go about it is to edit Draft:Norean R. Sharpe, paste the page you created at Wikiquote into it, put {{subst:submit}} at the top, then wait for it to be rejected (as it inevitably will be). —Cryptic 21:20, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How to check wikitext of an edit summary?[edit]

Hello. I was wondering how to check the wikitext of an edit summary to see what's the intended wikilink (if it points just to the page or to a subsection), in this case regarding Adflatuss' edit. Regards, Thinker78 (talk) 22:39, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The easiest way is to hover over the link and see what your browser says, assuming your browser does that. If you need the exact wikitext, it's available from the API - like this. The "1174764677" in that is the proper revision id (the number in a diff link that says diff=prev, not diff=next as in yours; or the oldid from clicking on a permalink). —Cryptic 23:12, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
If your browser or device cannot show the url on hover then you can click the link and view the address bar in the browser. It goes to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:CRIT so it's not a section link. Help:Edit summary#Places where the edit summary appears gives a way [3] to see the wikitext: Partial revert to more inclusive version of template. [[WP:CRIT|Controversial]] is not a welcoming introduction to new editors. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:22, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removing my DOB from my Wikipedia Page[edit]

Hi,

reaching out to try and get my DOB removed from my wikipedia page. Sarah Jones (stage actress)

please advise Sarahjones73 (talk) 23:17, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sarahjones73 It looks like you attempted to do so but broke the formatting of the article (not a "page"). Removing it depends on how public your DOB is; it was cited, but I don't know how widely available that source is. We can comply with such a request, but we can't necessarily guarantee it will be kept out if that information is very public. 331dot (talk) 23:27, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot and @Sarahjones73, the source seems ok-ish, but atm I'm taking Sarahjones73's word at face value and removed the date (leaving year) [4] as recommended by WP:DOB. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 06:42, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
