April 9[edit]

Making Edits[edit]

Hi, I tried making some simple edits, with more accuracy, to clean up a page for someone who authorized it (about himself) and we got a message from someone at Wikipedia, I think, that said he reverted what I wrote because he felt it was not constructive. This was a strange message because it was very constructive what we were writing: Completely factual and easier to read (less wordy). How does a total stranger have the authority to block what we're trying to write about a public figure who wants to simply edit his page through me? How can we complete the edit we want to make?

Thank you.... Smkirke (talk) 02:48, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Smkirke: please read WP:COI. You can post your suggested edits to the article's talk page along with {{edit COI}}. Wikipedia goes by published sources, not by what the article subject wants. RudolfRed (talk) 02:57, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also, see MOS:LASTNAME. The style Wikipedia uses is to refer to subjects by their last name, not their first name as your edit did. RudolfRed (talk) 03:07, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this information!
There was some inaccurate info we found there and wanted to clean it up a bit, and make it a little less wordy. Is that allowed? Smkirke (talk) 03:32, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Smkirke: WP:PSCOI is a simpler version of what RudolfRed suggested above. You might also find it easier to use the Wikipedia:Edit request wizard. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 03:56, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rafale for Serbia[edit]

There is no valid confirmation about Rafale for Serbia. 77.221.3.82 (talk) 10:31, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP user, and welcome to the Teahouse. I have added a header for your question, but it is not clear what you are asking. I'm guessing this is about Rafale#Serbia. If so, please ask your question - making it clearer what you think should be changed - at Talk:Dassault Rafale. --ColinFine (talk) 10:47, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

article about christian marley/son of damian marley[edit]

hi i was wondering if anyone could make an article about christian marley for me Leander skibidi (talk) 10:33, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unless you are the subject, the best person to create an article about a topic you are interested in is you. It is a challenging process that you should learn about if you are interested in it; see Your First Article and the new user tutorial; also try editing some existing articles in areas that interest you, to learn about how things work here. 331dot (talk) 10:38, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Damian Marley is notable enough for an article, but Christian Marley probably isn't.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 10:39, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Belligerents[edit]

I recently saw "(possibly)" mentioned in this article, Sasanian–Kushan Wars. So I would like to ask if we are allowed to write "(possibly)" in the infobox when the sources used in the article does not mention such names? Or are we eligible to write "(possibly)" only if the names are mentioned as per the sources in the article?

As you can see, I am confused. I hope that someone may clear my doubts as soon as possible. Thank you. Jonharojjashi (talk) 12:42, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, the only circumstances where "(possibly)" could legitimately occur in an article is where either the cited sources disagree on a point, or one of the sources expresses uncertainty about it. In that case, the text should explain just how the sources disagree or are uncertain, and a summary (such as in an infobox) might say "{possibly)".
In Sasanian-Kushan Wars, neither Vasudeva I nor Kanishka II is even mentioned in the text: they should not then appear in the Infobox at all, never mind with "(possibly)" attached - that would appear to be original research by some editor. Rather than removing them, I have tagged them with {{citation needed}}. ColinFine (talk) 16:21, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is there a way to ban a user/ip from making edits to a page?[edit]

We have someone harassing our group and making malicious edits to our page. Is there any form of security or blocking that we can implement? Thank you! AlmightyBobino (talk) 14:20, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Who is "your group" and what article is this referencing? Vandalism may be reported to WP:AIV. If vandalism or other disruption is a persistent issue, especially if from multiple users/IPs, page protection may be requested at WP:RFPP. 331dot (talk) 14:30, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reply! I will report using that link! Didnt know that existed. Thank you! AlmightyBobino (talk) 14:41, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AlmightyBobino: Regarding your statement of "our page", please see WP:OWN. GoingBatty (talk) 14:43, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this information! AlmightyBobino (talk) 15:10, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:VANDAL for what constitutes as vandalism. Also you may want to read WP:COI. Industrial Insect (talk) 16:32, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Images are not displaying[edit]

Hi, in the past few days I'm having an issue I never had before: Wikipdeia images are not displaying - while in Wikipedia websites (I tried several languages). When I search Google, the image appears, but then does not load when I enter the page. I don't have this problem in other websites. I tried in Chrome and Firefox, from a laptop and a PC, and have the same problem. In Firefox, this is the message I get when I right click an image and click on view image:

"Your connection is not secure
The owner of upload.wikimedia.org has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website.
This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox may only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate."

On Chrome, the message is:

"Your connection is not private
Attackers might be trying to steal your information from upload.wikimedia.org (for example, passwords, messages, or credit cards). Learn more
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID"

At the beginning, in this page I clicked on advanced and added an exception, and this loaded all the images on a page properly. But yesterday the exception button disappeared, and now I can't see any image. Please help me solve this issue! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:6500:A038:EB63:5864:3FE1:F86A:6D0E (talk) 16:10, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It sounds like some sort of proxy, VPN, or PUP is intercepting your traffic. Unfortunately, diagnosing and fixing this is beyond the scope of what Wikipedia can help you with. Q T C 16:13, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! Just curious - could you please give an example of a URL where you are receiving these messages? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 13:28, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability[edit]

If I want to add on to an article about a somewhat obscure topic, what would be the guidelines on that. What information would I have to add for my changes to be considered notable. LilliC4553254 (talk) 18:32, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:N and more likely our general notability guidelines. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 18:45, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: Neither of those relate to adding content to an existing article. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:57, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I missed that. We don't really make content itself "notable" or not. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:59, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks! LilliC4553254 (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LilliC4553254: We can advise you better if you tell us what you want to add, and to which article. But in general, you need to cite a reliable source, and your addition needs to satisfy WP:UNDUE, WP:NPOV and WP:SYN. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:57, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I was looking to add more infromation to the page for Ozma's The Doubble Donkey Disc . LilliC4553254 (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LilliC4553254 Wikipedia guidance encourages us to be bold. As Andy noted, provided you can cite a reliable source, just go for it but be prepared to discuss your addition on the Talk Page of the article if anyone reverts. Try not to add WP:FANCRUFT. How do I create a new page eg. For a school[edit]

how do I create a new page eg. For a school EdricJ (talk) 19:00, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

EdricJ Creating a new article is the most difficult task to attempt on Wikipedia. It is highly recommended that you first gain experience and knowledge by editing existing articles in areas that interest you, as well as using the new user tutorial, both of which to learn how things work here and what is expected of article content. This will greatly increase your chances of success and reduce the chances you will be frustrated and angry about things that happen to your work that you don't understand.
If you still wish to proceed, you will first need to read Your First Article before you use the article wizard to create a draft. You will need to gather independent reliable sources that give the school significant coverage- not that just tell of the activities of the school or basic information- things that show how the school is notable as Wikipedia defines the term. 331dot (talk) 19:09, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, new here. We really were not sure how this works. All we heard was no other of this genre music video had been shot there before, so we thought we could submit that note of mention either on this one or a new article. Either or, this is great to know! Fb4817 (talk) 23:12, 9 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The shooting of a music video is trivial and wouldn't confer any notability. Several drama series were shot at my school but it doesn't qualify for an article. See WP:NSCHOOL Shantavira|feed me 08:11, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
