Photo's being scrubbed of content[edit]

I had magnified the Orion Nebula. Located an object that the Webb took a distant picture of. How this object had been overlooked. It's has been scrubbed recently within the last week. Your initial Section and Photo added to Orion Nebula were reverted, correctly, by user Fountains of Bryn Mawr because none of the text was referenced to any published reliable source (Wikipedia does not care about unknown individuals' opinions, whether mine, yours or any other editor's) and the text style was inappropriate for an encyclopedia, the entire added section read as if it were indirectly promoting your own photo.
That photo, admittedly an excellent one, is welcome in Wikimedia Commons where it still resides, and might be added to one or more articles in the future by other editors, but it would be inappropriate self promotion for you yourself to do so.
Your subsequent addition of two sentences to the lede paragraph, also reverted by Fountains, partly repeated facts already present in the lede, which should only summarise fuller text further on in the article, and it contained a grammatical error and a non-MOS use of a unit symbol. It might be appropriate to add a new section about amateur observation of the Nebula and the type of equipment needed to do so, but this would need to summarise material from published reliable sources and be correctly cited to them, rather than be one private individual's opinions (which, incidentally, I share). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.186.221 (talk) 04:43, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Section edit[edit]

I have recently redesigned my user page (User:Cambalachero), dividing it into sections for the topics I usually edit, and placing at each one the alticle alerts from the related wikiprojects, so I can see them all at a single page and have an easier time finding things to do. Problem is, the sections have lost the [edit] button at the right. I suppose that those article alerts must have a "no edit section" magic word (the wikiproject pages do not have such buttons either), and that's what prevents them from showing up at my page. Is there a way to counter that and force to edit section buttons to appear? Cambalachero (talk) 00:49, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

User page questions[edit]

I noticed multiple users adding color (e.g. blue) name of their user page (header I think) when it is displayed. Also, I have noticed them add icons to their header. How would I do such in my user page? Mseingth2133444 (talk/contribs) 02:10, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Mseingth2133444 and welcome to Wikipedia: you may use the magic word DISPLAYTITLE and <span> to color your userpage name. for example, if i was to color my title purple in my userpage, I would write {{DISPLAYTITLE:<span style="color:purple">User:Melecie</span>}} which would display User:Melecie as the title. note that there are many restrictions for DISPLAYTITLE including that the name you are changing it to should be identical to the page's original name (so while i can add color, i can't just have it display my name as Jimbo Wales, for example), which you may see in Changing the display title. for the icons, these are made using topicons and are often to used to show user rights (such as {{administrator topicon}} or {{extended confirmed topicon}}) or featured/good articles one has worked on ({{GA user topicon}}) happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 10:14, 19 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Inappropriate citation on Spore (disambiguation)[edit]

Copyright question[edit]

Regarding these pages:

Their content is taken from pages such as: "Democracy Index 2021: the China challenge" (PDF). Economist Intelligence Unit.

... and that file says: "Copyright © 2022 The Economist Intelligence Unit Limited. All rights reserved. Neither this publication nor any part of it may be reproduced, stored in a retrieval system, or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording or otherwise, without the prior permission of The Economist Intelligence Unit Limited."

@Alalch E.: very good question. The analysis will take awhile. Please see Wikipedia:Copyright in lists. If you have time, then after you reash a conclusion, please raise this in the respective articles' talk pages. My first impression is that the Economist used subjective value judgements, and the lists are therefore copyrighted, but I am not sure enough to actually tag the articles.-Arch dude (talk) 15:57, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I will not claim expertise in the area of intellectual property, but I think the extra verbiage in the copyright notice is of no force or effect. If you have a right to include, for instance, brief quotes from the content, based on the principle of fair use, then this extra verbiage in the copyright notice can't cancel that right. Unfortunately, as far as I am aware, there is no penalty for making claims that go beyond what you actually have a right to claim, but IMO, it's just as if the "scare verbiage" in the copyright notice weren't present at all. @Fabrickator and Alalch E.: Yep, ignore the actual notice and focus on copyright law. Creative elements are copyrighted by default, including selection, composition, ordering, and opinion. It's copyrighted creative material, and other than *brief quotations* is forbidden. Accent on the "creative", which is at the core of the issue here. If the Economist page were a list of the populations of the biggest 25 democracies, you can copy the population figures, because there is no creative element involved; you could look up the numbers by going to the sources. But that Economist page refers to a "Democracy Index" which you cannot look up anywhere else other than the Economist, because they invented it, and define it on that page as "60 indicators, grouped into five categories". That is "creative content" beyond just a population lookup or equivalent, and therefore cannot be copied into an article. Since that is the whole basis of the article, it is a copyright violation which should be deleted, and then WP:REVDELed to expunge it from the history of Wikipedia. @Jpattara: I want to clarify that these rules apply even though Stoa is a non-profit organization rather than a "company". Also, I don't feel we are harsh enough, in that we should make clear that while COI editors may request whatever changes they want, there should not be an expectation as to how this material will be incorporated into the Wikipedia article. @Bhavana Jagwani: If it's anything like the version on your user page (which will soon also be deleted), it's because it's a copyright violation, being cut & pasted from ivplt20.com - Generally, you may not copy text from other sites to Wikipedia. Citing same source multiple times with different pages[edit]

How do I cite a source multiple times in one article, referring to different pages or sections of the source in each separate citation?

For example:

[2] Book A, pg 37

[3] Book A, pg 192

(edit conflict) The easiest way is to separate the citation from the references. You place a reference inline and have a bibliography at the end where all the sources are cited. See Frindsbury for an example. However, if this is an established page, then you'll have to follow the existing style. In that case you may have to put the full citation inline. You can then use {{sfn}} to link to the citation with a different page number. Have a look at this and then use edit to view the markup: some words in a book[1] followed later by some more words[2] and after more waffle a conclusion.[3] Martin of Sheffield (talk) 20:37, 16 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That list article is unprotected and can be edited by anyone including you. So, go ahead and add a "Texas" section, and add a reliable source verifying each entry.
