Fictional characters are notable only when reliable, published sources that are entirely independent of the book, the author and the publisher devote significant attention to the fictional character. Not passing mentions, but delving deeply. Cullen328 (talk) 04:16, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I need help from a Wikitable wizard[edit]

Hello!
I'm working on Sikidy and want to copy a table from a source. The table has some complicated headers, with some nesting. Would anyone be willing to help me out with them? I can't seem to figure out how to do them. Below are the header rows alone (which in the wikitable I would want to all be shaded dark, as headers are)

With visual editing, you'll need to have a 3×5 header, and select the cells to be merged to form the long cells. As for shading, switch to source editing and change "|" of each cell to "!". You can copy the following table:

Paragraph rendering in VisualEditor as a single template block[edit]

What should this article's title be?[edit]

Hi there, I want to write an article about Komatsu's surface mining excavators, however, am unsure what to name the article title. The model series starts from PC2000 and goes to PC8000. Why can't I name it Komatsu PC-series excavators? Because all of their other models use the PC prefix, except for their surface mining excavators all models are numbers in the thousands. @X750: Komatsu just calls them "Surface mining excavators" at https://www.komatsu.com/en/products/excavators/surface-mining-excavators/. "Komatsu surface mining excavators" has no Google hits but I cannot think of a better name when they have many other excavators with PC numbers. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

PrimeHunter I was thinking of doing something similar to how nVidia has their GeForce 10 series, because whilst you're right that Komatsu surface mining excavators is a unique term, I'm not entirely comfortable with it being a non-specific term (other companies such as Caterpillar offer surface excavators too), I was thinking something along the lines of "Komatsu PC-xxxx series", with something better in place of the "xxxx" placeholder in the title. @X750: I don't think "Komatsu surface mining excavators" implies that only Komatsu makes surface mining excavators. I think a PC name for the series should only be used if Komatsu or reliable sources use it. Is it even described as a "series" by anyone? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:32, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to upload a photo while editing[edit]

I was editing a page related to the Kanker State. I have the ohoto of the last ruler of the state and want to upload it. I am his grandson and it is a family photo owned by me. I am not being able to upload the photo. Please guide/assist. Adityakanker (talk) 06:49, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:UPIMAGE. The main issue is copyright, because unless you took the photo yourself or had permission from the person who did, it might not be suitable, although it could have a fair use rationale.--♦IanMacM♦ ^{(talk to me)} 07:04, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you have evidence that the photo was taken before 1929, then it's no longer protected by copyright, and you can upload it to Commons. You'll need to convince them of its date.

If after 1929, then you'll need permission from the current copyright-holder to upload it to Commons. I presume you don't know who that is, so you won't be able to upload it there. But you may be able upload a "fair-use" reduced-resolution version of it here on Englisj-language Wikipedia. Maproom (talk) 11:38, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Creating Wikidata from Wikipedia[edit]

G'day to all. Is there a way to create a new Wikidata item from a Wikipedia, without going to Wikidata site and "manually" creating a new corresponding item that could then be connected to a newly created wikipedia article ? Thx in advance. ౪ Santa ౪^99° 15:34, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Santasa99, You could try Wikipedia:WE-Framework. Also a bot will probably create an item for a new article eventually. I don't create many items, so manual input works fine for me. TSventon (talk) 17:06, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to indicate that two teams have tied in a Sports Table module.[edit]

On my current draft page, at User:Yoblyblob/1985 Niue Soccer Tournament, the two top teams in Division 1 officially tied for a joint championship. Does anyone know how to edit the number to show them both finishing in first? Yoblyblob (Talk) :) 21:24, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Yoblyblob The table might be automatically using the "goals against" to break the tie in favor of Hakupu, but I can't see this documented anywhere at Module:Sports table/WDL. You will probably get a better response by asking this question at Module talk:Sports table.

Regardless, you might want to check your numbers again, as the table has some issues when I hit Preview: the number of wins and losses aren't equal, there's an odd number of draws, and the number of goals for and against isn't equal either. Toadspike [Talk] 11:32, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Using the Wayback Machine for references[edit]

Hello, I haven't created any articles for some time and on my return I had to realise that you've made a major change in regards to what references have to look like. When I checked out if a website I wanted to use as reference was archived, I received the answer I had just archived it myself. But I didn't get that long number that you demand here as part of the archived link. Where is that number? Where do I get it? Do I need to register with the Internet Archive? Not a complete, or completely apposite, answer, but note that no references have to include a link at all. Links are a bonus convenience for readers, but offline references are perfectly acceptable (a great deal of information has never been put online) so traditional bibliographic (or analagous) details are sufficient.

If the information you want to reference is on a website, (a) is that website a Reliable source, and (b) where did the website get it? The answer to (b) may be a preferable source (if Reliable). A website that is the true original source of information may be Primary, which is also less desirable. Thank you. I always deliver references. Even when I am having a private conversation I like to tell where I have my information from. People who have accused me of making something up have repeatedly seen me again the very next day with a paper or a book in my hand to prove my sources. These days it is common that everybody has a strong opinion on everything and when you ask them how they know certain things they just blast out "Everybody knows that! It was even on TV!"... but that is not me. Also, when I read a Wiki article as a mere consumer, I always love to find links that lead to further information and I hate it when these links have become useless before I could retrieve the information to which they once have led. @NordhornerII If you want to add an archive link to a template like Cite web, you simply paste the entire Internet Archive link after |archive-url=.

I assume the number you're referring to is the first number you see in the IA link. For example, for [2], the number would be 20220117044057.

I vaguely recall using this once but can't think of any cases where this number must be used instead of a link. And, as the helpful IP pointed out, adding archive links is not mandatory. Toadspike [Talk] 11:53, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Toadspike. You make it sound easy and that is appropriate because the whole procedure is easy. That is the point. When I have worked for 8 hours with an (in)famous computer program, which all the time forces you to go back and forth and to re-enter information (sometimes even in two different places until you can succesfully save it) and then to use the search function to continue you task... well, then it is hard to believe that getting something done on a computer can actually be easy.
