Black Lunch Table Photo Booth[edit]

Event Description[edit]

Black Lunch Table mobilizes the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. The core activity of the BLT Wikimedians user group is edit-a-thons. It allows BLT as a user group to work together to increase the information and participation about and by our community. It also allows us to invite all editors to focus on the knowledge gap that exists around the lives and works of Black artists on the platform.

Recognizing that Wikipedia is not the only platform that lacks information about the lives of Black artists, the BLT Photo Booth increases images of Black artists on Wikimedia Commons. To make notable artists that fall in the Wiki gaps more visible, BLT invites professional photographers to host a pop-up portrait studio at events and make that work open license for free use, edit and distribution. This Photo Booth is held in partnership with BLT, ELA-Espaço Luanda Arte, KILOMBO and the William Tucker 1624 Society.

Please join us on Thursday, December 8th, 2022 from 2:30-5:30 PM at ELA-Espaço Luanda Arte for your portrait.

About Black Lunch Table[edit]

Black Lunch Table (BLT)is a nonprofit organization and sixteen-year ongoing artist collaboration. BLT’s primary aim has been the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues.

Black Lunch Table Wikimedians mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. In the field of mainstream contemporary art, Black artists are still marginalized within our field.

Wikipedia estimates that 77% of their editors are white and 91% of their editors are men. Our work shifts this demographic and empowers people to write their own history. Our sessions and events, including BLT Photobooth and edit-a-thons, equip new editors with the skills and resources to create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles and encourages existing editors to focus on Wikipedia knowledge gaps.

About ELA-Espaço Luanda Arte[edit]

ELA is a gallery based in Luanda that aims to contribute towards the presence and promotion of Angolan contemporary artists in the international scene. ELA directly partners with international art organisations to fund and develop Pan-African residencies as well as inter-continental research and relations.

About William Tucker 1624 Society[edit]

The William Tucker 1624 Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is an organization dedicated to the education of the greater public about the first Africans to arrive in Virginia. August 1619, two of the first documented Africans, Antoney and Isabella, arrived in the British Colony of Virginia at Point Comfort (present day Fort Monroe), to become servants on the plantation of Captain William Tucker and his wife, Mrs. Mary Tucker. Captain Tucker was the Commandeering Officer at Point Comfort. William is documented as the first child of African descent born to the parents of Antoney and Isabell, and baptized in 1624. Descendants of William Tucker continue to reside in the Hampton Roads area. The William Tucker 1624 Society conducts research into the life of William Tucker and that of his descendants. As we gain insight into the strength and resilience of the Africans who built and populated the United States of America, we document, preserve, and share their narratives.
