You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs

Note, I am unsure how to format the origin for this; Oxford Dictionary of Quotes says "mid-19th century", and mentions early usage, "On ne fait pas d'omelette sans casser des oeufs" (Robespierre / Napoleon), "We are walking upon eggs, and whether we tread East or tread West, the omelet wiil not be made without breaking of some" (T.P. Thompson, _Audi Alteram Partem_, 1859) and "My dear Miss Flora, you cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs," I. (R.L. Stevenson, 1894). Fiat lux
("Let there be light")

I think this goes a little closer to "Let there be light". Wikipedia, I believe, has multiple "lights", not just newly created articles. --I dream of horses (T) @ 17:25, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Would you prefer if the link were changed to vandalism or something like that? I do believe that some type of disruptive editing, be it vandalism, edit warring, what have you, is inevitable. Those types of people will always be out there. PrincessofLlyr royal court 12:30, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Oppose all This quote just philosophically rubs me the wrong way. Edit one seems to guarantees a certain future. The original and edit two seem rather depressing. There's always going to be vandals, so what's the point of doing anything? --I dream of horses (T) @ 17:40, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Edit 1 ~ While they were filming at 58th St and 6th Ave, Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA, a car drove into the scene and almost hit Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight. Dustin Hoffman ad-libbed the line and it stayed in the movie. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 06:40, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

  • support, but is there a better way to do this than to link to the template? {{Sonia|talk|simple}} 07:33, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Weak Support Something better than a template would be nice. Hi878 (talk) 18:34, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
  • Some alternatives are:

    1. Wikipedia:How_to_edit_a_page#Major_edits
    2. Wikipedia:Editing_policy#Talking_and_editing

But, I don't dislike the idea of linking to that template, because there are some editors who do not know when, where and how to use templates. By doing so, they can be informed of the existence of that template and on how and when to use it, simply by reading the template documentation, which is just below the template itself. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:20, 21 May 2010 (UTC)
    • Eh, the template will do, because after all it has documentation. And that's fine. {{Sonia|talk|simple}} 01:56, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
