Wikipedia:Peer review/Stadium Merdeka/archive1

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I've listed this article for peer review because it is now categorized as a start/stub article, but it was reviewed before I've expanded it. I think the article now should be at least a C class, which is why I've requested a review for this article.

Please feel free to provide any comments/suggestions regarding my writing as I'm still quite new to writing Wikipedia articles.

Thanks, Bo Jing Lim (talk) 01:07, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that it is definitely at least a C class article! However, some of the wording still needs a bit of clarification. For example, the first sentence said that the stadium is "the first modern building of the new nation." What does "modern" mean in this context? If the stadium was signed the day before the declaration, wouldn't the building technically be built in the old nation?
Not sure if my comments are helpful. If you have time, could you take a look at the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, which is also under peer review? Thanks! Tommyren (talk) 13:01, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, regarding the statement "the first modern building of the new nation", it was added by another writer prior to my edit, and I've overlooked it when I'm editing the article (perhaps I myself also find it sensible at that time). Nevertheless, the statement was actually from a quote by the conservation project team of the stadium from a UNESCO website: "This is the first modern building of the new nation of Malaya, and stands as a testimony to our nationhood. The restoration of the Stadium Merdeka has reinstated its status as a symbol of Malaysia’s multi-cultural society promoting cultural integration through sports, recreation, education and nationhood". The term "first modern building" might be referring to the first Modernist/Modern era (the architecture style) building in the nation, a claim that (so far) I'm unable to verify.
I will be removing that statement (until I/someone found a source to verify it) as I'm unable to trace the complete quote to confirm the speaker's actual intentions, and it also doesn't make sense to claim the stadium as the "first modern building" as there might be some other buildings that were completed on that day elsewhere in the country, which is very hard, if not impossible, to find record regarding it. Generally it can easily be treated as C-class already. However, many works need to be done.
  • This article require 'Architecture' subheading to discuss its detailed blueprint plan, construction, etc
  • There are many promotional words in the article, such as 'first modern building of the new nation'. That is really subjective and it is not a fact, per WP:IBA.
  • It also requires inline citation for the largest stadium in Southeast Asia upon completion and UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Excellence for Heritage Conservation per WP:INCITE, and it has to be re-written again inside the article body (not only in the intro paragraphs).
  • For the sentence 'Prior to the opening of Stadium Merdeka, there wasn't a professional stadium in Malaya', how about professional stadium in Sarawak and Sabah? We are writing an article about Malaysia here, so be Malaysia-centric, not only Malaya-centric.
  • In the concert section, the word for Jolin Tsai 'She will return again for her Play World Tour on 16 July 2016.' is outdated already and needs to be updated.
  • The caption for all of the images should be sentence fragments without period or full stop per WP:CAPFRAG
  • Facilities subheading is a bit trivial per WP:CITENEED and can be rewritten inside architecture subheading
  • Add coordinate region in its coordinate (the one inside infobox) per WP:GEO
  • Update the infobox venue to reflect all of the latest parameters per MOS:INFOBOX
  • And many more Chongkian (talk) 09:20, 16 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've resolved the issue regarding the coordinates, image caption, the concert part and added inline citation on the two sentence. I've also edited the infobox but I'm unsure whether I've solved the issue. I also did another review on the article to make sure every fact is cited and non of it were promotional or subjective, however I might missed some so if you found any please let me know.
So far I didn't found any information about a stadium in Sarawak or Sabah that was being built before Stadium Merdeka (early football matches of the Borneo Cup was played on fields). However, I realised that I've misunderstood the original source. It mentioned about FAS & FAM urging the government to build a stadium but it didn't state whether there was any stadium in Malaya before Stadium Merdeka. There was, in fact, a stadium in Malacca and another one in Penang that was built before 1957. I might have assumed that the two organisations were asking for a stadium because there wasn't one in the country. I apologised for my mistake and it was not my intention write anything in a Wikipedia article based on my assumptions. I've edited the article such that it follows the original intention of the source. I'll try my best to not repeat such mistakes again.
I totally agree with creating an 'Architecture' subheading. However, would it be repeating facts mentioned in the 'Construction' section under 'History' as it also mentions about the construction methods used to build the stadium?
Thank you very much for pointing out my mistakes, do you mind listing down the other issues that you've found in the article? I'll try my best to resolve it as I really wish to improve this article. Bo Jing Lim (talk) 04:16, 20 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Let's do some edits parts by parts. Now let's just focus on all of the list of references/citations first.
  • Translate the title for all of the references with non-English title (e.g. reference no. 15) using |language=??|trans-title=??
    •  Done
  • Complete all of the minimum parameters for references (e.g. reference no. 120 is missing title)
    •  Done
  • Standardize for all of the dates (date= & access-date=) to be in dd/mm/yyy format (e.g. 5 June 2020, not 2020-11-09) as per Malaysia standard
    •  Done
  • Please write the author name (last=xx|first=xx) of the sources (e.g. reference no. 77)
  • Please write the title of the citation as it is from the original source (e.g. reference no. 93) and dont include the publication name inside the title name, instead have it separately at publisher= or work=
  • Follow all of the citation style per WP:CITE depending on the type of the source, especially on the {{cite news}}: Empty citation (help) and {{cite web}}: Empty citation (help)
  • There is no inline citation for Philiac Concert for Peace, May 2011 in the concerts section. it is not mentioned inside reference no. 120 also (if you intended to use this citation for the two concerts listed there).
    •  Done
for the Declaration of Malaysia section, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is being linked twice (even on the same paragraph). based on the rule, link should appear only once in an article per MOS:REPEATLINK, so please do so with other links inside the article as well. linking should be done only when the word was firstly mentioned/written.
 Done

At Heritage conservation section, do not link to pages outside the article namespace per MOS:DRAFTNOLINK on the 'UNESCO Asia-Pacific 2008 Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage Conservation'. External link should be written as inline citation, not as a link to words inside Wikipedia article. Chongkian (talk) 08:18, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
 Done
I'll be closing this peer review as I won't be active in Wikipedia for some time. I apologised for not being able to finish all the unfinished tasks as I've been quite busy recently, which is also the reason why I'll stop doing Wikipedia edits for now. Thank you so much for the guidance by the two Wikipedians, I really learn a lot from this peer review. Hope the other editors can continue my unfinished job and continue to improve this article.
