[edit]U2 album
[edit]I recently heard about a U2 album (?) called People. I've never heard about that album before, it includes the track Slide Away ft. Michael Hutchence, I Wanna Be Around ft. Tony Benett and a strange version of Creep ft. radiohead. Is that an official album? I don't know but I couldn't find anything on it in any place. Does anyone knows about it?? Ms.Bono(zootalk)☆ 13:28, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Wrong Bennett. It's Frank Bennett who did cover versions of 90s pop songs in the crooner style. It's likely his version of Creep you remember. --Jayron32 13:35, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Jayron, I am sure it says Tony Bennet. I also search in Wikipedia here. And the Creep song is this one, Bono sings in both of them. Ms.Bono(zootalk)☆ 13:52, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, Frank Bennett did a rather famous version of that one. --Jayron32 18:40, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

- You should probably take these kinds of question (and your next one, below) over to our Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Entertainment - where questions like this are answered by experts in this kind of thing. SteveBaker (talk) 13:48, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- I always shot there first but as Iusually say: in my few months as Wikipedian, I've dicovered that there are places where people just ignore you if you are a newbie or a probie. I always have luck here and got my question answered. Ms.Bono(zootalk)☆ 13:52, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Here's[1] a youtube of Tony Bennett singing "I Wanna Be Around", accompanied by Bono, et al. That song I think is one of Tony's old hit songs. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:17, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Thanks Bugs!! I'm afraid I have no access to Utube... But thanx a lot for the gesture :) Ms.Bono(zootalk)☆ 17:19, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Bono dancing Tango
[edit]I saw the cover of Hello magazine for Argentina where Bono is in the front page. It said Bono was seen dancing tango in Puerto Madero. Anyone knows the date of that edition of the magazine?? For the way Bono was dressed and his shades I think it was 2007 or 2008 but I am not sure. Ms.Bono(zootalk)☆ 13:33, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
Type of Fly
[edit]Recently, I've been seeing insects that I have never seen before here up North (UK). At the moment, in the front garden, there is a fly walking around on the floor. It looks like it's probably going to die soon of old age, as it's unable to fly and walks sluggishly, yet it does not look injured. Anyway, I would like to identify it, to see where it comes from. It looks like a 'normal' housefly, but it has yellow stripes on it. It's about ½ inch long, with black eyes. It's legs are brown. Can anyone tell me what it is? I took some photos, but it's in the shade, so they were not very good, and getting in close to it just made the picture blurry (using my iPod). KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 15:07, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- A hoverfly, perhaps? Falastur2 Talk 17:16, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Not quite. Same colours, but the body was the same shape as a bluebottle. There were two yellow lines going vertically down its back on its torso. Its abdomen was black, possibly with some more yellow on either side. KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 17:29, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- It isn't a Choerades (robber fly) is it? Some of them mimic honeybees and look a lot like hoverflies. --Jayron32 19:36, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- No, not that one, either. If it helps, it wasn't shiny. It was this shape, but the eyes were bigger and black. KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 19:55, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

- If you've ruled out the above guesses, check out some of the bee flys. SemanticMantis (talk) 19:59, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- No, sorry. They are a completely different shape. KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 23:02, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Well, the links above cover all the bee-like or yellow-striped flies I know of... not that I know them all! Keep in mind things like color and body shape are pretty bad features for insect ID. If you can collect a sample, the thing to do would be to check out the wing venation, which is a good way to start sorting out flies. Another thing to check to confirm that it is in fact a diptera is to find the little halteres. You could also try the same description over at whatsthatbug.com SemanticMantis (talk) 14:43, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

- Just a guess, but it's the time of year for horse flies in the south of England. The ones we get have more prominent vertical stripes than the ones depicted in our article. Alansplodge (talk) 07:48, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- That's actually probably it, Alan, cheers. I just thought it was weird because we don't get them up here. KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 15:03, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Looking after cats?
[edit]So one of my housemates' fiancée has some cats that they can't keep where they live now, so we're looking after them here. Thing is, we had cats once before, and said housemate didn't do a very good job of looking after them, in particular leaving the litter tray full a few inches deep with their mess, to the point where my other housemate threatened to move out. So, now we have more cats, any advice on things we can do to keep the place clean, tidy, not smelling too much, and make sure both the animals and people here are all happy?
213.104.128.16 (talk) 18:59, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Only an answer to a question you didn't ask, but depending where you (or the fiance) lives, the "no cats rule" may be invalid. Here in Ontario, I have a bit of an animal rescue thing going and often hear people saying they need to drop their cats with me because their landlord doesn't allow pets. I tell them to read this and ignore the landlord. Some do, some don't. But many aren't even aware they have the right to keep a non-dangerous/disruptive pet. If you don't live here, please consider skimming your own tenant law. The fiance may be entirely entitled to take care of her own damn cats. InedibleHulk (talk) 06:24, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- Reading between the lines, I'm guessing that you didn't bother to get the consent of all of your housemates first before taking the cats in. Now you're stuck with "damage control". Personally, if one of my roommates brought animals into the house without getting my consent first (which would never happen anyway), there is nothing they could do to make me happy about the situation short of getting them out of the apartment completely. Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 19:10, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- It wasn't my idea to get them at all, I only found out a few hours before they arrived. but yea, otherwise, pretty much it. I'm hoping the fact that we had cats here until a few months ago anyway might help, since it's not a new experience, and we have an extra person around pretty much every day to help look after these ones, have to wait and see... 213.104.128.16 (talk) 23:43, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- And you don't think that's rather inconsiderate, even downright rude? Don't expect your roommate to be thrilled. Dominus Vobisdu (talk) 00:54, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- I know, I'm not best pleased either, but there's nothing else we can do for now, we all ended up in this mess together 213.104.128.16 (talk) 10:43, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Sounds like you're going to be spending a lot of time cleaning out the litterbox yourself. Set a schedule, stick to it, as it doesn't sound like you'll expect any help from your housemates, based on your testimony about their former performance. --Jayron32 19:12, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- If your housemate's fiancée has cats and has moved into a place where they do not allow cats, she should have thought about that before moving in. Just saying, "Yeah, I'll move in here and get someone else to take the responsibility for them, even if they have had a bad experience before" is not very responsible. She should either move somewhere where they do allow cats, or give them to someone who is 100% sure there will be no problems with other housemates. Not only this, you are now stuck with the financial burden of buying everything for the litterbox, as well as food, and you will be cleaning the apartment quite often. For smells, air fresheners are fine (you will have to buy them), and for smells on fabrics (cats like sofas and armchairs), you will need to buy a fabric freshener such as Febreze. You will also be disposing of the dead mice and dead birds they will inevitably bring home (and hide in random places - find them quick, before they start to rot). Also, if they are female, you may end up with even more cats, unless you get them neutered - even more expense. Good luck. I hope it works out for you. KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 19:30, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Keep the litter tray close to the toilet and drop any solids down it as soon as possible. Use woodbased litter. Try and restrict the cats to part of the house (preferably the part with the litter tray). Get one of those air fresheners that is battery powered and set it to go off every half hour, keep it above the litter tray so you can give it a booster press if needed. If any kitty accidents occur, remove solids and spray area with either a proprietary cleaner or a solution of biological washing powder in water. This will remove the smell and remove the encouragement for all the cats to leave their own smell in that spot. Good luck. --TammyMoet (talk) 19:25, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- Cats can be trained to defecate directly into the toilet bowl, and there are many recipes for cat meat. μηδείς (talk) 20:58, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- If you get a cat flap for your door, make sure you get one of those magnetic ones, otherwise other cats will be able to get in. This is especially important when female cats are in heat, beacause your house would be overrun by loads of male cats all fighting each other to see who can be the one to mate with them. This is assuming your cats are female. KägeTorä - (影虎) (TALK) 22:58, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- We're getting proper odour-removing litter (apparently the wood based stuff doesn't work as well), and an air freshener too, so hoping that, and encouragement to get it cleaned out more often, will help. Otherwise, they've both been 'treated' and everything, so shouldn't be any trouble there. Only thing left is to persuade my other housemate to at least give them a chance, and hope for the best. 213.104.128.16 (talk) 23:43, 5 July 2013 (
- Tell said fiancé that if the tray is not cleaned daily then contents will be put in his bed.
- And do it.
- If possible, the cats should have regular access to the outside world. If they do, they will probably do little defecation or urination within the house, but may bring home dead animals - much less of a problem. If they have to be kept indoors, one problem not yet mentioned is that they are likely to damage furniture and carpets by scratching them with their claws. This can present problems for landlords, and if you provide a purpose-made scratching post the cats may well ignore it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 07:41, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- Going outside isn't going to be possible, hence the various problems I need help with, it's all cleared with the landlord at least, though. I'm hoping it's only going to be for a little while, until they all move in together and leave us in peace. 213.104.128.16 (talk) 10:43, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
- Keeping cats indoors only is cruel. Please tell your housemate that and ask them to find someone else to take the cats on. Itsmejudith (talk) 07:40, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- It's sad at first, but after a while they do forget there's such a thing as the outside. Cats have fairly short memories, maybe a month or two. Started keeping one inside after a bout with feline stomatitis made him disappear for four days — it was just too hard, not knowing where he was. My sister found him hiding in some brush, and if she hadn't he would surely have died out there, in pain and with no one to comfort him. --Trovatore (talk) 07:47, 7 July 2013 (UTC)
- I looked up what the RSPCA has to say about it. I thought they disapproved completely, but it seems they don't. Some very useful advice pages, http://www.rspca.org.uk/allaboutanimals/pets/cats/environment/indoors. Itsmejudith (talk) 11:17, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

Reference desk categories
[edit]I don't know if this is the right place to ask but has Wikipedia ever considered changing the categories a bit to reflect the present day and the types of questions asked? For example, there are 2 very broad categories - science and humanities, then 2 less broad but still broad categories - language and maths, and then there's a more narrow computing and IT. Could the science and humanities both be split into 2 maybe and then incorporate computing into one of them? Maybe technology? Please move this if I have asked in the wrong place and apologies if I have. It may make it easier for answerers and those who ask questions. Thanks. Clover345 (talk) 19:11, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- We'll split when we get overwhelmed. There aren't too many questions in any category such that we can't keep up with them. The categories are meant to be broad guides and no one is going to rap your knuckles with a ruler if you post in the wrong category. Sometimes, a question could easily fit into multiple categories. Pick any one of them which is appropriate and ask. It's absolutely no issue at all, and no one is really a "stickler" in trying to decide if a question on psychology belongs in science or humanities, or if a question about music belongs in entertainment or miscellaneous. If people are getting bent out of shape over such matters, I suggest their off-Wikipedia life has issues which are clouding their good judgment in general, and you can pay such people no mind. --Jayron32 19:15, 5 July 2013 (UTC)
- I agree - we split up over-worked desks and merge under-worked desks when we need to - but the present set has been stable for quite some time and the workload seems about right. What we really don't do is to try to divide the world of knowledge into equal chunks and assign one desk to each. That doesn't work because you end up with some areas that have so few questions that our experts don't bother to monitor them and then when a question does pop up, it would likely be ignored. If you'd like to discuss reorganization in more detail, the best place is on our Talk: page: Wikipedia talk:Reference desk. SteveBaker (talk) 20:41, 5 July 2013 (UTC)

- Good timing, Clover; I've been wondering the same thing myself. For my own interest, I would vote to separate "Black Holes & Relativity" questions into their own separate Science SubRefDesk, just so that I can skip them!

- The last idea for a split which got any support was for a separate 'Religion' one, but that was to get rid of such questions from the science desk and I don't think the religious ones saw their questions as being more religion than science. As to the original question, why this hangup with dividing in two rather than three or five? Dmcq (talk) 11:05, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
