Stony Brook University Libraries, with the support of Wikimedia New York City and Stony Brook Young Investigators Review, celebrates Earth Day 2024 with a STEM edit-a-thon! This event is the first edit-a-thon hosted at the university since 2019 and seeks to introduce Stony Brook students to Wikipedia editing as well as various databases in the library's collections.

Event information

[edit]

If you do not have one already, create a Wikipedia account, and record your attendance on this page by clicking "Sign up" in the Attendees section below and saving the page.

We will spend the first 25–30 minutes discussing the basics of Wikipedia editing and various databases in the collections of Stony Brook Libraries that can be used as reliable sources, which will lead into open editing for the remainder of the event.

Citation Hunt

[edit]

Citation Hunt is a tool that selects a random Wikipedia article with an unsourced statement, flagged with {{citation needed}}. Once you find an article that interests you, please find a reliable source that verifies the statement in question and add it to the article.

[edit]

This event is being held during Earthstock week, in celebration of Earth Day. Several queries have been run ahead of time using PetScan to find relevant articles in need of improvement, though you are encouraged to click down the Wikipedia rabbit hole on your own! Once you find an article that interests you, feel free to expand it and add citations to reliable sources.

Conflict of interest statement

[edit]

In accordance with Wikipedia's conflict of interest policy, Stony Brook University students and staff are discouraged from editing about any topics related to the university or for which they may otherwise have a conflict of interest. Those wishing to do so anyway should read the relevant guidelines and make an edit request at the affected article's talk page, in addition to publicly disclosing their conflict of interest on the talk page or their user page.
