Please create an account on Wikipedia if you have not done so as yet.

  1. Join the dashboard page for today's workshop.
  2. Have a look at our new Histropedia timeline of Women's suffrage in Scotland.
  3. Have a look at our Navigation box template we add to the foot of pages about the Scottish suffragettes.
  4. There is a draft biography you can look at and use as an exemplar: Jocelyn Bell Burnell or the Mary Blathwayt.
  5. Would you like to do more editing after today? There is a WikiProject Women in Red you can join to take part in their monthly themed editing events and we hold in-person Wiki Women in Red editing events at the University of Edinburgh too.

About the event

Full Wikipedia editing training will be given, followed by an editathon that will focus on improving the quality of articles about fans of all descriptions, shapes and sizes. We will provide training on how to edit and participate in an open knowledge community. Participants will be supported to develop articles covering areas which could stand to be created and improved.

Come along to learn about how Wikipedia works and improve the information available online!

  • 2:05 pm – 2:45 pm: Crash course in Wikipedia training from Ewan McAndrew, Wikimedian in Residence.
  • 2:45 pm – 3:00 pm: Tea break and deciding what to edit.
  • 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm: Research and EDIT!
  • 4:30 pm – 5:00 pm: PUBLISH! and close.

Helpful updates could be as simple as: Making sure reference links are still appropriate and functional; Adding new inline citations/references; Adding a photo; Adding an infobox; Adding data to more fields in an existing infobox; Creating headings; Adding categories; etc.

  • Buchaechum - This Korean fan dance does not cite any sources. Short stub article, can it be expanded?
  • Cariñosa - This fan dance from the Philippines does not cite any sources.
  • Suzume Odori - traditional Japanese fan dance. Article may need created as it currently just directs to Japanese traditional dance.
  • Kuk Sool Won - martial arts system from Korea where a fan is used is as a weapon. Article to be created.
  • Beatallica - mashup tribute band to the Beatles and Metallica - needs additional citations for verification.
  • No Way Sis - the official Oasis tribute band originating from Glasgow, Scotland. Needs additional citations for verification.
