Wikipedia:WikiProject Cartoon Network/old/2008-2009

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Welcome to the Cartoon Network WikiProject. We are a small band of editors dedicated to improving Wikipedia's coverage of Cartoon Network through existing and new articles, lists and other media. This WikiProject's purpose is to bring these people together as a centralised place to discuss what's going on, ask for help with problems, announce new articles and pinpoint areas that especially need fixing. Generally, we think of it as being the oversight for our specific subject matter and to be the layer between routine editing and the administrative layers of Wikipedia.

We hope that this project page will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please add your name to the members' list! WP:TOON is focused on improving and expanding the coverage of Cartoon Network, its past, present and future, across Wikipedia, and we would be delighted to welcome you!

(For more information on WikiProjects, please see Wikipedia:WikiProject and the Guide to WikiProjects).

Project layout nixed from the wonderful guys and gals at WP:LGBT

Goals[edit]

  1. To bring every Cartoon Network-related related article up to FA status.
  2. To maintain or improve articles that come under our jurisdiction.
  3. Improve and protect Cartoon Network articles
  4. Verify and validate content
  5. Prevent cruftcreep

Scope and Motivation Scope[edit]

The scope of the projects is to:

  1. Identify and categorize existing Cartoon Network-related articles on Wikipedia
  2. Develop standards for what is required for Cartoon Network-related articles for consistency and best practices
  3. Improve the quality of existing articles
  4. Ensure articles are in line with Wikipedia's minimum standards and policies, including but not limited to: WP:NOR, WP:OWN, WP:V and WP:NPOV
  5. Identify and develop standardized tables, tags and categorization schemes for articles
  6. Identify and create articles that are not yet included in Wikipedia

What this Wikiproject is not[edit]

  1. This project does not extend to programming which is purchased by Cartoon Network to air but has no involvement from them or to programming made by Warner Bros. Animation.
  2. This project does not help out with many, if not every, anime series which airs during Toonami slots.
  3. This project does not limit itself to European/North American issues.
  4. This project does not cover any adult swim programming.
  5. This project has a strict policy against trivia, "...in popular culture" and otherwise crufty issues, either as sections or whole articles.

Tasks you can do[edit]

A lot of people join the project and want to help, but don't really know how. Here's a list of tasks that either need regular attention or fulfil the goals of our project:

  1. Submit an article to Jumpaclass and see how much you can improve it in seven days.
  2. Submit high quality articles to WP:DYK on their author's behalf.
  3. Categorize and verify categories for existing articles

Departments[edit]

The WikiProject runs several departments to aid us in our goals. Anyone is welcome to help out with any of them.

Assessment[edit]

One of the main tasks of the Cartoon Network WikiProject is to assess the quality of Wikipedia's Cartoon Network-related articles. The resulting article ratings are used within the project to help in recognising excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work. They also play a role in the WP:1.0 program, which the WikiProject uses to help automate some of the assessing process.

The assessment is done in a distributed fashion through parameters in the {{Cartoon Network}} project banner; this causes the articles to be placed in the appropriate sub-categories of Category:Cartoon Network articles by quality, which serve as the foundation for an automatically generated worklist. WP:1.0 also produces a statistics page, and a log of articles assessed.

To find out more, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Cartoon Network/Assessment.

Collaboration[edit]

The Cartoon Network WikiProject runs a monthly Collaboration, to try to harness the editing skills of the entire Project to bring one article up to Featured Article standard a month. The COTM article is also peer reviewed shortly before becoming the Collaboration article, in order to help editors pinpoint what most needs changing. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Cartoon Network/Collaboration for more information.

New collaborations are currently agreed upon on the talkpage on an ad hoc basis until a more formal nomination process is warranted.

Community[edit]

The Community Department of the Cartoon Network WikiProject is a centralised place to develop ways of fostering a sense of community and belonging in all our members, and to recruit more people into our community. Editors who are happy and have support when they need it are more likely to work harder at improving articles than if they feel no-one cares.

To achieve this, we currently need:

  • A semi-successful recruiting program to headhunt helpful contributors to the Wikiproject.
  • A welcome template to inform new members of aspects of the WikiProject and where they can go for help.
  • A newsletter to keep members up to date with all the latest news from the WikiProject

Any other ideas are welcome! Please propose them on the main talkpage.

Jumpaclass[edit]

Jumpaclass is a fun semi-competition that the Cartoon Network WikiProject runs to improve the quality of lower-quality articles. There are many processes for higher quality articles, such as Peer review and FAC, but many stubs and start rated articles languish unedited for lack of interest. Jumpaclass is an attempt to correct that.

To enter, find an article you would like to improve from the list of assessed Cartoon Network articles: you can choose Stub or Start-class articles or lists. You then have seven days to improve the article. If within a week, you "jump" an article one or more assessment classes, you win points that are noted on a leadership board. Check Wikipedia:WikiProject Cartoon Network/Jumpaclass for all the details. Challenge a friend to go "head to head" with you and see who can jump their article the furthest!

Peer Review[edit]

The Cartoon Network WikiProject peer review articles on request. This is to encourage better articles by having contributors who may not have worked on articles to examine them and provide ideas for further improvement. The process is highly flexible and can deal with articles of any quality though requesting reviews on very short articles may not be productive as there is little for readers to comment on. This process is not an academic peer review by a group of experts in a particular subject, and articles that undergo this process should not be assumed to have greater authority than any other.

To learn more about our peer review system, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Cartoon Network/Peer review.

Miscellany[edit]

Article alerts[edit]

The article alerts system works by keeping track of events occurring to articles under our scope. Deletion discussions, peer reviews amongst other workflows will be displayed here as well as being transcluded below. A full list of workflows along with a more thorough explanation of the article alerts system are documented at WP:AAlerts.

Checklinks[edit]

Checklinks is a tool whih allows editors to verify reflinks and external links for linkrot. We use an automated version to create a list of articles that have issues. The list of articles are available here. The list is updated monthly.

Watchlist[edit]

The Cartoon Network WikiProject maintains a watchlist for all articles tagged as within our scope. The list is like your own watchlist but much larger. It lists every article tagged by us, and may also be helpful if a normal alphabetical list is needed. It is updated automatically by bot, so manual changes are not required.

The watchlist is here. We also have a userbox which links to the recent changes to articles on that page.

Guidelines[edit]

This guideline tries to help editors improve the quality of Wikipedia's articles within scope of Cartoon Network related articles. For Wikipedia guidelines regarding how to write about fiction in general, see Wikipedia:Notability (fiction) and Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction). These are only guidelines and may be altered depending on current Wikipolicies and/or project participant consensus. Remember, these are guidelines, not policies. Most of these guidelines are accepted as standard practice across Wikipedia. All the standard Wikipedia policies still apply.
