Welcome to the WikiProject Lethwei. This WikiProject was formed to encourage a community of cohesive editing for Lethwei related articles. If you would like to help, please inquire at the talk page or, if you wish to join us, please add your name to the list on the list below. Guidelines for creating and formatting Lethwei articles are below as well.
Scope
[edit]Lethwei, also known as Burmese bareknuckle boxing and The Art of 9 Limbs, is a very unique martial art, born in ancient Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and has seen a revival in recent years. The different aspects of Lethwei, such as headbutts allowed and fighting bareknuckle makes the edits very specific. Adding to the very unusual geopolitic characteristics of Myanmar, the history surrounding its national sport makes it a necessity to have a specific WikiProject for Lethwei.
The WikiProject oversees articles related to Lethwei fighters, Lethwei organizations, Lethwei events and notable people related to Lethwei, such as coaches and promoters.
Goal
[edit]The main goal of Lethwei task force is to provide Wikipedia with an authoritative set of articles of good or featured quality relating to all significant aspects of Lethwei and notable practitioners. To do so, this task force aims to:
- establish and organize standards for Lethwei-related articles.
- unify currently existing articles with the current standards.
- improve the overall quality of kickboxing-related articles.
- provide a central node for discussing, coordinating, organizing and improving kickboxing-related articles.
- serve as an article assessment group, helping move articles closer and closer to Featured Article status

WikiProject Lethwei notability guidelines
[edit]Remember that this task force is part of Wikipedia. All Wikipedia policies and guidelines are applicable for all articles, including the ones within the scope of WikiProject Martial Arts. If one of the following guidelines for kickboxing-related articles is in conflict with a Wikipedia policy or guideline, the later has priority over the former.
Notability
[edit]All topics not covered by the text in the following paragraphs must meet the general notability guideline (GNG). Any article that does not meet the GNG will be deleted, so, when creating an article, try to provide evidence of notability by providing reliable third-party sources.
- Notability for Lethwei has not yet been discussed and added to the Wikipedia Notability guidelines. The task force needs to define these requirements and propose the amendments.
Defining
[edit]A Lethwei athlete is presumed notable if they've:
- won a world title of a major organization or promotion (World Lethwei Championship, International Lethwei Federation Japan)
- been ranked in the world top 10 by a major, preferably two, independent publication that meets the definition of a reliable source, or
- been a Golden belt champion.
For non-athletes, such as promoters or coaches, please check Wikipedia:Notability (people).
Organizations
[edit]Lethwei-related organizations are considered notable if they are a sport governing body (like the Myanmar Traditional Lethwei Federation) or if they are promotions (like World Lethwei Championship) and have received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject. Obscure sport governing bodies or promotions that cannot accomplish at least two reliable third-party sources should not be added to Wikipedia until they receive significant coverage in said sources.
As an additional criteria, it is presumed that an organization is notable if reliable third-party sources dedicate detailed coverage to one or more of the champions of this organization. This is only a presumption and still requires sources to show that the organization meets the criteria by itself.
Events
[edit]Professional competition at the highest level that meets WP:SPORTSEVENT is considered notable. Local Lethwei competitions or amateur competitions are not considered notable and should not be included in Wikipedia unless consensus on the talk page of this WikiProject determines otherwise.
New articles
[edit]Please feel free to list your new kickboxing-related articles here (newer articles at the top, please). Any new articles that have an interesting or unusual fact in them, are at least over 1,000 characters.

Editing
[edit]Always keep in mind Wikipedia's core policies.
- Any text challenged or likely to be challenged must be attributed to a reliable, published source using an inline citation. Remember that the threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth. What editors thinks is true is not the criteria for inclusion, even if they believe that a source is incorrect. The burden of evidence lies with the editor who adds or restores material. You may remove any material lacking a reliable source that directly supports it.
- All material must be attributable to a reliable, published source. Articles may not contain any new analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to advance a position not clearly advanced by the sources. To demonstrate that you are not adding original research, you must be able to cite reliable, published sources that are both directly related to the topic of the article, and directly support the material as presented. Do not plagiarize the content from the sources. Use your own words. Do not combine material from multiple sources to reach or imply a conclusion not explicitly stated by any of the sources
- All articles must be written from a neutral point of view, representing all significant views fairly, proportionately, and without bias. Avoid stating opinions as facts, stating seriously contested assertions as facts and presenting uncontested assertions as mere opinion. Prefer non-judgemental language and accurately indicate the relative prominence of opposing views.
- Article titles should be recognizable to readers, unambiguous, and consistent with usage in reliable English-language sources. Remember that this is the English Wikipedia, so always use the most commonly used term in English-language reliable sources when defining an article title. When no English-language reliable source exists, use reliable sources in other languages that are Latin alphabet-based. If they do not exist, use the appropriate language guidelines to transliterate the article title.
- In biographical article of kickboxers, take particular care when adding information about living persons. Material about living persons added to any Wikipedia page must be written with the greatest care and attention to verifiability, neutrality, and avoiding original research. These article should be written responsibly, cautiously, and in a dispassionate tone, avoiding both understatement and overstatement. Criticism and praise should be included if they can be sourced to reliable secondary sources, so long as the material is presented responsibly, conservatively, and in a disinterested tone.
