Wiki takes the Tube was a photography session in London on the 9th November 2013. The aim was to take photographs of some of the Grade I and II* buildings in London and upload them to Wikimedia Commons. Especially buildings that are not yet well photographed. Meeting at 10 am in the Costa cafe immediately on the left (coming from outside) inside the main entrance of Waterloo station, by 10.30 we will finalise the route and head off (or just follow your own route and take a few photographs).

Plan

[edit]
  • Meet at the cafe by the main entrance (Station Approach) to Waterloo. This a Costa (the only Costa in the station), immediately on your left if you enter from Station Approach. No. 31 on the

Station map - click on the link in the top right corner to download a PDF if you are uncertain.

  • Follow an itinerary with planned times to be at each station, that anyone could join/leave as they wish, updating the itinerary as we travel round London.
  • People can edit articles and/or take and upload photos
  • Significant non-transport locations in need of photos within 5 minutes walk of stations (eg Grade I/II* buildings without decent photos) noted
  • One or more co-ordinating mobile phone numbers, so others can find us
  • End at a pub that serves real ale.

Wet weather contigency plan

[edit]
  • If wet, we will head for a museum instead, most probably the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), where they are known to be tolerant of photography.
  • As of Friday lunchtime, the forecast for the key 10am-3pm period is for heavy rain.
  • There are several Grade I/II* buildings nearby the V&A. For example, St Augustine's, Queen's Gate (stub article just created) has no photos on Commons.
  • Just south of South Kensington Station are Pelham Place, which has no photos and Pelham Crescent, which only has one good recent photo, and that is only of 1-14, no photo for 15-27. No photos of St Luke's Chapel, Brompton Hospital either.

London meet-up next day, Sunday

[edit]

The next day we have our 75th London meetup, feel free to make a weekend of it.

Participants

[edit]

Due to heavy rain and a pretty poor weather forecast we had several last minute cancellations, only had three participants and largely retreated into the V&A. But we did venture forth during a brief interlude and took some pictures of several previously overlooked buildings.

"Mobile" London Transport Edit-a-thon, 9 November 2013

[edit]
  • Idea arose from talking with Thryduulf at London Wiki Meet-up on 13 October 2013.
  • Discussed further with WereSpielChequers, Philafrenzy and others there.
  • WMUK have a mobile WiFi hotspot that we could use. Of course, it won't work underground!
  • VLE training with Charles Matthews scheduled for 9 November 2013 has been cancelled, so there is a "hole" on that Saturday.
  • If this works we could repeat after Wikimania as part of the fringe.

Results

[edit]

I took lots of photos of the Lord Mayor's Show and got Arbitrator's flags for Roger and Carcharoth from the Worshipful Company of Arbitrators. My current London articles are Chelsea Bun House and Mare Street. The phantom railings in Malet Street will be going up as a DYK soon. Andrew Davidson (talk) 18:56, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
