Missing images

[edit]

It was brought to my attention that there may be a large number of rugby players that do not have images in their infobox, are not tagged (on the talk page) with |needs-infobox=yes, yet there does exist an image (e.g. Aaron Mauger and File:Aaron Mauger 2023.png). If I set up some sort of tracking category to indicate these "articles with image but missing an image" would folks be willing to help out and depopulate the cat? Primefac (talk) 20:34, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

if there is a tracking category I can help get through a few. Skeene88 (talk) 19:44, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Tracking category set up at Category:Pages calling infobox rugby biography with available image (1). It might take some time to populate though. Primefac (talk) 14:17, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I correctly addressed some old unsourced edits, but this article would benefit from a review by a subject matter expert. 76.14.122.5 (talk) 02:38, 26 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Player deletions

[edit]

JTtheOG has been consistently proposing deletion of about a half dozen rugby biographies per day over the past weeks. Many of these are well-developed articles but in most cases don't appear to demonstrate the significant coverage in independent sources that demonstrates notability. Anyone interested in monitoring this activity can do so here. ~Kvng (talk) 20:25, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Extra eyes are always good, but deprodding vindictively is just as disruptive as careless PRODding. That being said, based on how many did get deleted I don't think they are all that far off the mark (i.e. it's not careless). Primefac (talk) 10:08, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed and I have tried to be careful about deprodding but I don't know anything about rugby so I'm looking for some help with review from people here who do. ~Kvng (talk) 13:48, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please feel free to deprod if you find anything approaching WP:SIGCOV for these articles (or for any other reason). I always appreciate the extra eyes. I try to PROD only in the most obvious cases; otherwise, I take it to AfD. JTtheOG (talk) 17:31, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW I've had no issue with the majority of articles PRODed or at AFD. I'd prefer if it was only 4 or 5 articles a day though as it allows more time to research sourcing thoroughly. When there's 8/10 articles a day to look through both PRODed and AfD my searching basically consists of a simple google search. I'd like to be able to research some of them more thoroughly but don't feel able to with the current number daily. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 18:28, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My WP:PRODPATROL gets pretty cursory when there are more than 20 total proposals per day. ~Kvng (talk) 20:08, 30 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone keen to help? New to all this

[edit]

HI, I thought it would be cool to learn how to create/edit wiki pages starting with creating a page for my local Rugby Club, to record a bit of history, other clubs in our competition have pages and so it made some sense. i've hit a few road blocks (finding it hard to learn, page not being approved due for several reasons including learning your not allowed to create a page for anything your affiliated with even volunteering at a local sport team)....finally i was directed to inquire here to see if anyone could assist, be an impartial creator? do i just add to the list of requested articles? any help much appreciated Kiwiwomble (talk) 03:23, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kiwiwomble, I'm sure others will have more helpful advice, but maybe you could start reading the Help:Your first article page and follow the links in that article to more detailed information. Ruggalicious (talk) 07:02, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
HI Ruggalicious, yeah, have started trying to learn and have that page open on my other scene currently, cheers, one thing that came up was it is discouraged to create a page for something you are personally involved with as its a conflict of interest so i was also kind of looking to see if anyone was keen to be an impartial creator Kiwiwomble (talk) 23:54, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Confusing article titles

[edit]

I'm trying to understand why the 2021 Women's Rugby World Cup is under 2021 Rugby World Cup even though the previous cups were labeled "Women's Rugby World Cup" and the next one is at 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup. It's causing some confusion in the categories they've been placed in. I did an article page move for 2021 and then reverted myself when reading on the main Cup article that they were removing "Women's" from the title so why is it back there in the 2025 Cup article? Thanks. Liz Read! Talk! 22:41, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

In 2021 World Rugby decided to do away with gender in their naming scheme, so we changed the name. From the looks of the official site they've reversed that decision and have gendered the 2025 competition. I'm not really sure why there's confusion - could you expand on that? 1981 South Africa rugby union tour of New Zealand and the United States

[edit]

There is a request to move the 1981 South Africa rugby union tour of New Zealand and the United States article to Springbok Tour. Only 3 people have participated in the discussion and only the requestor and I have given an opinion, though we have had a fair bit of discussion, including about other naming options. I am opposing a renaming. I could sit back and let the request fail for lack of consensus, but the noble part of me feels that wider participation could be beneficial. Nurg (talk) 01:49, 14 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Noting that the discussion has been closed and the page has not been moved. Primefac (talk) 16:25, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I started expanding this template following a discussion where I realised that we don't use any convenience templates in places like 2017–18 Glasgow Warriors season § Player statistics where we really should be including the full names. My question here is of display; {{Rugby league positions}} takes an input and outputs a link to the position, e.g. {{rlp|FB}}Fullback. Ours, currently, outputs the abbreviation with hover text, e.g. {{rup|SH}}SH. I guess my question is, which output type would folks prefer? Personally I think a link to the position is good, especially since it has the full name, but I understand why avoiding an entire roster's worth of links could also be visually appealing. Primefac (talk) 16:24, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to draw your attention to a request for input that I've posted on the Template talk:Rugby union stadium page. The topic for discussion is also relevant to Template:Rugby union team. Ruggalicious (talk) 02:11, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft list article

[edit]

The rugby union deletion sorting page has been quite active lately. Since the notorious RFC that eliminated participation criteria, there's been a movement to remove articles on players that don't meet the notability criteria, and to be fair there are plenty of those. I'm working on a draft List of Ulster Rugby players of the professional era which could collect verifiable information about players who don't meet the notability standard and could be a useful redirect for articles nominated for deletion. Any players listed here who can be brought up to the notability standard could then be spun off into their own articles. I think this could be a useful model on how to move forward since the participation standard was eliminated. Any comments? --Nicknack009 (talk) 08:27, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The only issue I can see with creating redirects to lists like this are for multi-team players. If Joe Bloggs plays three seasons for Ulster, then three seasons for Leinster, but is otherwise non-notable, would we redirect the name to the list of Ulster players or the list of Leinster players? Sources for Major League Rugby standings

[edit]

Hello, project members. I am hoping to create a dedicated seasons list for the Seattle Seawolves of Major League Rugby to finish a series of Featured lists that I have created for the professional sports teams in Seattle. I have yet to find a definitive source for the year-to-year standings in MLR, as it seems the league website does not keep an archive (and the Wayback Machine was not able to capture them properly), and other websites (such as ESPN) only have partial data. Is there a good third-party source that would fulfill the FL criteria's requirement for a high-quality, reliable source, similar to Sports Reference? SounderBruce 07:08, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! Unfortunately, the MLR is still not covered by most websites that keep record of match results and standings of rugby competitions and tournaments. I did, however, find a reliable source for those standings tables on the website of Americas Rugby News. You can access the years 2018–2023 via the links on this page. It's not a sports stats website, but they have good info about the MLR and about rugby in North (and South) America in general. By the way, it's possible to archive the official MLR standings via archive.today. I just tried it with the 2024 standings. Unfortunately, nobody has saved the standings of previous years there, but it does work well (it just looks a bit different). I hope this helps. Ruggalicious (talk) 09:38, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
ARN seems to be my best bet. Thanks! SounderBruce 19:51, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
