Stub templates

[edit]

Please, stop removing blank lines before stub template, as per WP:STUBSPACING: "Leave two blank lines between the first stub template and whatever precedes it.". CLalgo (talk) 12:47, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I am aware of this. This is done automatically by the Cat-a-lot gadget. I've raised the issue previously but am yet to get a resolution. Regards. Jevansen (talk) 12:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So please, manually restore those lines. Don't leave it for other editors to do. CLalgo (talk) 12:57, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can make this a task to complete when I'm finished running through these articles. Many of these are going to be soon edited again (using the tool) so it would be counterproductive to do it now as the changes would then be reversed. Jevansen (talk) 08:15, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
We don't use a Crystal ball. Please don't leave things like this on articles in hope that someone will clean up after you in the future. CLalgo (talk) 08:21, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify, I mean I personally will be editing these articles again soon, as part of my process. Any attempt to remedy this now would end up with someone else complaining for flooding their watchlist with a pointless task. I can manually review any Judo related articles more promptly if it really bothers you, but beyond that I don't know what to offer you. Jevansen (talk) 08:34, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That would be nice, as my watchlist is currently flooded with this problem you were asked 3 days ago to stop creating. CLalgo (talk) 08:53, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok they're now fixed. Jevansen (talk) 09:21, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jevansen: I ask again: Please stop removing blank lines before stub templates. CLalgo (talk) 11:53, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We've been through this. It's an issue with the Cat-a-Lot tool. Will keep happening. Not a big deal. User:Tom.Reding regularly does WP:STUBSPACING fixes through AWB to take care of this. Jevansen (talk) 20:10, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

21st-century African-American military personnel

[edit]

I noticed that you have added Category:21st-century African-American military personnel to multiple articles on Tuskegee Airmen. I'm not sure that category is appropriate as it implies that they were military personnel in the 21st century, despite most of them having been retired for half a century by that time. I think such categories would be much better used for military personnel who were active during their respective centuries. What are your thoughts? - ZLEA T\C 07:05, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's a fair point. I'll review those in the category. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 08:27, 31 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Trove ref titles linking through miscapitalized redirects

[edit]

I notice you sometimes add references, probably from Trove, with links such as Newcastle Morning Herald And Miners' Advocate through over-capitalized redirects, as in this edit and in this edit. Should be lowercase and as in Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate. You can find more such things via the report WP:Database reports/Linked miscapitalizations. I have a hard time keeping up with that, so if you could help by cleaning up some of those, or by being careful to not put overcapped Trove refs in the fist place, that would be much appreciated. dual and triple premiership players

[edit]

Hey, mind taking a look at the list here and here? These are all templates of dual and triple premiership players. Can these be replaced like what was done with Template:1904/05 Fitzroy dual premiership players? Do you know if there are even more of these that I missed? Gonnym (talk) 10:40, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gonnym. Search also ""triple premiership players" for several further templates. Template:1955–57 1959–60 Melbourne premiership players, Template:1927–30 Collingwood premiership players and Template:1986/88/89/91 Hawthorn premiership players are others not otherwise captured. Most of these likely aren't even in use anymore. The two I checked (2013/14/15 Hawthorn & 1951/52 Geelong) aren't on any pages and have already been separated. Every one of these will have existing individual year templates they can be replaced with, like the Fitzroy solution. Jevansen (talk) 10:53, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Printmakers

[edit]

Are you sure you know what you are doing with these category edits? Engraving is just one printmaking technique among many, and actually not much practiced in the 20th century - etching & lithography being far more common. People like Stanley William Hayter are much better described as printmakers, & this category should not be removed. Johnbod (talk) 05:06, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John. Hayter was already populated in Category:20th-century engravers, I just diffused it by nationality. Any engraving categories fall within printmaking so I removed the parent cat per usual procedure. I've added back Category:20th-century British printmakers nonetheless as I take your point that this is what he was primarily known for. Jevansen (talk) 05:29, 8 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Galina Ustvolskaya

[edit]

I got notified that you removed her from the list of 20th century composers. Any reason for this? She was a prominent 20th century composer after all. Khuft (talk) 17:26, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This was removed per WP:SUBCAT and WP:DIFFUSE. She was already populated in Category:Soviet classical composers. Jevansen (talk) 20:09, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. Thanks! Wasn't aware of those initiatives. Khuft (talk) 20:26, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Record producers

[edit]

Hi, why did you remove Category:English record producers from a load of musicians who are, English record producers? This must be undone. Or are you in the process of creating subcategories? Hiddenstranger (talk) 10:04, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. This is due to them having Category:English remixers (Category:Remixers being a subcategory of Category:Record producers). Jevansen (talk) 10:07, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I noticed that you added Category:English remixers under Category:English record producers. That shouldn't be the case though. Remixing existing tracks and producing new original music are two very different things. One of the main professions of these artists is producing new music. Remixing is just another commissioned job they do. Therefore, they should all still remain under Category:English record producers. Hiddenstranger (talk) 10:21, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I was just following the category structure that was already in place. I'll update the other categories too (to remove record producers as a parent cat). Jevansen (talk) 10:26, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see you're undoing those edits. Thanks. Hiddenstranger (talk) 10:36, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, all sorted now. Thanks for bring this to my attention. Jevansen (talk) 10:39, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:21st-century Japanese singer-songwriters indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

[edit]

Hello, Jevansen,

Usually, you are amazing in that you fill empty categories as soon as they are created but a lot of these Storting categories showed up as Empty Categories on my Quarry query. Just reminding you of them in case you have moved on to other category creation. Thanks for all of your contributions to the project! Liz Read! Talk! 23:35, 23 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Still working through, will make sure to add at least one to each category to start with, but this will be a slower process. Not every one of these parliamentary periods are supported by an existing list, so a read of individual articles is required in some cases. Thanks.

Consolidating mass category changes

[edit]

Just to pick a few names in my watch list, Kenneth LeFevre, Louis F. Kosco, LeRoy J. Jones Jr., Anthony Impreveduto, Arline Friscia and Marion Crecco have all had categories updated five or six times each over just the past few days, almost entirely taking over my watch list. It would not have taken much effort to reduce the number of edits by combining the obvious sets of edits together, which would simplify the lives of all those individuals who watch these articles across the state and the nation. Can I ask that more effort be made to increase the amount of time planning the edits to reduce their impact on other editors? Alansohn (talk) 21:55, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I would if it were possible. The automated tool I use can only add/remove one category at a time. Even though it takes double the amount of time, what I could do is make more use of AWB where practical, as these edits can be marked as minor. Cheers. Year of death missing

[edit]

Hi! Just saw that you marked John A. Tibbits with Category:Year of death missing, but it's written in the article as 1893 - I've removed it for now. Is there something I should do to prevent this from happening in the future, or some additional step I need to take with the Tibbits article? Thanks! Staraction (talk | contribs) 05:19, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. He just hadn't been populated with Category:1893 deaths, that's why the category was added (even though his death year wasn't strictly "missing"). I didn't review each individual article, rather added the category on mass to any 18th/19th-century U.S. politician without a death category. This helps identify articles like Tibbits that need to be populated with a year of death. In some cases the information may already be in the article, but most of the time further research would be required. I've updated the article with his birth year and death year categories. Thanks for picking this up. Jevansen (talk) 05:33, 21 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. I'm tempted to remove all my comments (if you agree anyways) and let other people have a go at answering... it was intentionally not marked as minor in the script you imported (I said this at VPT too), because of a request to the author of the script to set it to false, the justification being that adding and removing categories is not a minor edit...
Should I remove all of those responses? Pretty sure people would be more likely to respond the other parts if all my pointless text wasn't there.
Sorry :c. – 2804:F1...26:F77C (::/32) (talk) 21:47, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, it was useful to rule that out. The solution made total sense .. beyond me why it wouldn't work. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 21:52, 24 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Electronic literature categorizations, Ruth Nestvold

[edit]

Hi Jevansen, Thank you so much for your work on electronic literature. We do have a project page and are encouraging work in this important topic at WP:ELIT. We would love your help in this area. Please join in? thank you!

Is there a reason for moving the general "electronic literature writers" category to "American electronic literature writers"? What should the categorization schema be for electronic literature writers?

Also, there is a categorization for Ruth Nesvold as an American electronic literature writer, but the works I have found for her are all print works. Why is she categorized as an electronic literature writer?

Thank you! LoveElectronicLiterature (talk) 17:01, 29 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deena. Subcategories by nationality is a good way to diffuse these larger categories, consistent with the subcats in Category:Writers by genre. Copying how other genres are categorized would be the best bet if you're unsure what approach to take. This particular cat could be broken down further by other nationalities if you wish.
I've removed the category you mentioned from Ruth Nestvold. She was already categorized as an "electronic literature writer" when I made my edit (changing her to an "American" electronic literature writer). I don't know what the original rationale was for her inclusion, but I have taken it off as there is nothing within the article that backs this up.
Thank you for the invitation. I can't say I have a particular knowledge or interest in this area. This was just part of a series of edits I was making within the much broader Category:People by occupation area.
Happy new year. Jevansen (talk) 10:58, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. However, is there any way to amalgamate the subcategories so that we can see who is in the general electronic literature writers or anyone tagged with that category so we can check? LoveElectronicLiterature (talk) 16:17, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You could add Template:All included to the top of Category:Electronic literature writers. This would allow you to have writers in both (see Category:Members of the Australian House of Representatives as an example). Jevansen (talk) 20:30, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Overcategorization

[edit]

Shouldn't cat:19th-century baseball players be a sub-cat of cat:19th-century American sportsmen? It seems like a tad bit overcategorization at this point no? Yankees10 19:04, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Probably not. While baseball was not as popular outside the US in the 19th century as it is now, it was not isolated to the US. See History of baseball outside the United States, which mentions baseball being played in Canada, China, Cuba, Japan, Korea, the United Kingdom, and many other countries during the century. - ZLEA T\C 19:20, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah like ZLEA says, there are too many other nationalities represented in the category (56 Canadians for example), so this wouldn't be appropriate. Jevansen (talk) 20:22, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To that end, I wonder whether Category:Negro league baseball players is correctly categorised. There seems to have been a large number of other nationalities who participated? Primarily Cubans. Jevansen (talk) 00:27, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mass staging of sportsmen

[edit]

This edit to the article for Danny McDevitt places him in Category:20th-century American sportsmen, one of what appears to be thousands upon thousands of edits that masses him into a category that already includes 33,381 articles, while Category:21st-century American sportsmen has another 13,604.

What is the purpose here? Have these articles been placed into what is clearly a staging category, only to have several further iterations of temporary categories before reaching its final destination? Why not move the articles into a final target in the first edit, rather than multiplying the needless addition and removal of temporary categories? Alansohn (talk) 13:02, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Alan. The purpose it to populate a category. As for the rest ... that's all in your imagination. Jevansen (talk) 21:52, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Copying from "Category:English cricket biography, 1920s birth stubs" to "Category:20th-century English sportsmen" at first sight seems reasonable, but it can lead to some anomalies, in that those whose connection to cricket came solely from writing about it or commentating on it, but who never seriously played it or any other sport, can find themselves categorised as sportsmen. E.W. Padwick is an example. I'm wondering whether I should delete the category in those instances. JH (talk page) 08:33, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks JH. I hadn't considered this. The category wouldn't be appropriate for Padwick I agree. I've moved him to Category:20th-century English writers instead. Let me review the others. Should ideally be only players or coaches. Cheers. Jevansen (talk)

Sportsmen categories, again

[edit]

Is there any reason why you are mass removing (examples here and here, but many more flooding my watchlist again) categories that @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: only mass added a few months ago? These mass category edits (from both of you) are becoming increasingly disruptive. GiantSnowman 21:18, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, per WP:Diffuse (as stated in my edit summary). I found Category:England men's amateur international footballers and added it as a sub to Category:20th-century English sportsmen. Jevansen (talk) 21:30, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why are these edits even being made in the first place? GiantSnowman 21:33, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Why am I populating categories? That should be self explanatory. Jevansen (talk) 21:36, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No, why are these categories needed? But also, why are you doing it like this? Why can't a bot do it? GiantSnowman 21:40, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not familiar with bots. For this particular method (cat a lot), it's often of case of looking at short descriptions within categories .. nationality, birth year etc (with this script) and select any appropriate articles to populate. Jevansen (talk) 21:49, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like this isn't a bot task per WP:BOTPCAT. Jevansen (talk) 21:51, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'll ask again - why are these categories needed? Where is the consensus for them to even exist, let alone to be (disruptively) mass added/removed? GiantSnowman 15:33, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is consensus required for category creation or addition? We have the CfD process and that would seem the more appropriate venue for this discussion. All I know is that this category grouping, which I didn't start, has existed for over two years without an issue. Jevansen (talk) 20:06, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Category:20th-century English sportsmen was created in June 2024... GiantSnowman 10:14, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Category:20th-century sportsmen by nationality was created in 2023. Jevansen (talk) 10:17, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
August 2023 - so about 18 months ago, and not "for over two years". GiantSnowman 10:21, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Someone grouped them together in 2023. We have Category:21st-century Indonesian sportspeople created July 2022. So yes, over two years ago. Jevansen (talk) 10:29, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Category removal

[edit]

Hi Jevansen! I see that you remove all categories of "21st-century ... sportswomen". I guess there must be a reason, which I don' know yet. I am eager to know it so that I don't use of it in the future. Would you please simply explain the reason? Thanks. CeeGee 10:14, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hey CeeGee. Not sure what this relates to. Can you link me one of the articles in question. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 10:21, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Please check as an example: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Armisa_Ku%C4%8D&curid=48482100&diff=1266768223&oldid=1265902894 CeeGee 12:40, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@CeeGee: see section above where I highlighted the same issues... GiantSnowman 15:32, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks CeeGee. Armisa Kuč has a diffusing subcategory. Category:Montenegro women's international footballers (a team only active in the 21st-century). Jevansen (talk) 19:36, 3 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

20th century Liechtenstein politicians

[edit]

Why did you deem it appropriate it remove the category of 20th century Liechtenstein politicians from a vast majority of the applicable articles and replace it with the member of the Landtag categories? Almost all of these people had a political career outside of being a member of the Landtag, and I fail to see how suggesting otherwise by constraining the categorization is productive. Please undo this. TheBritinator (talk) 03:07, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This is standard for diffusing legislators. You need to add a non-diffusing template to the subcategory if you don't want this to apply. For most, their (political) notability would be as a member of the Landtag, aside from those who were ministers or head of government. I checked everyone in Category:Members of the Landtag of Liechtenstein (1932–1936) before answering you and each mentioned the Landtag in the intro. We can also populate Category:20th-century mayors and Category:20th-century heads of government (or ministers) to capture others. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 03:40, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Most, but not all. It still restricts their categorization by suggesting that they didn't have a political career outside of the Landtag, especially for the mayors and government members. As it stands I don't think the category is in need of diffusion. Or if it does, it needs to be more thorough than that.TheBritinator (talk) 03:53, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I added it back to the five PMs (as we'll hold off on populating Category:20th-century heads of government). You will need to add the template I mentioned to all of the Landtag subcats, otherwise anyone could perform this same action. Thanks. Jevansen (talk) 04:08, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Understood. I will assist in doing a more thorough diffusion soon. TheBritinator (talk) 04:14, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. You're the subject matter expert, so happy to leave it in your hands. Cheers. Jevansen (talk) 04:18, 4 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
