Process for translating medical terms in Wikidata[edit]

This project includes translation of some medical terms which appear in many places. Many of these terms have several alternative names, such a scientific name, common names, and then perhaps other names which are only common among the doctors or health workers but not the patients.

Wikidata is the idea place to manage all these terms but it is still hard to use. One solution to making the management of terms easier in Wikidata is to use a "Wikidata front end", which is any software which makes Wikidata use easier. I asked Daniel Mietchen for assistance and he set up

Right now this the system is set up to show 10 languages of India. No one is going to read and write all 10, so this is not set up for editors to quickly use, although anyone can fill in the blanks in this collection if they see one. Anyone can edit while logged into their wiki account, as this is part of the Wikimedia platform.

In the future, we could set this up for particular languages. For example, we could show English, Hindi, and Bangla only, which means that anyone who can understand either the Hindi or English term could translate the term into Bangla. Any combination of languages is possible. A default plan could be to set this up for 2-4 languages together, if we imagine that many of the people who would edit will know at least two languages but they may not know the same two.

In general this project has been starting with English language, but with this system, we can leave out English, and ask people to check word translations between any two languages.

I wanted to share now. It still takes a little training to use this system, and I am not aware of anyone documenting this process yet. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:03, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Here are additional versions (bn, kn), taking into account not just disease items but also items linked from them. I also tried to include items linking to disease items but this timed out, so I commented it out for the moment. What are the activities of SWASTHA in improving Covid-19 articles?[edit]

Hello Everyone,
I came here after I found several media outlets publishing articles about "How Wikipedia (in India) is fighting misinformation about Covid-19?" where every article in one way or other links SWASTHA and quotes Abhishek Suryavamshi. As I have started a project in Telugu Wikipedia on March 21 and co-ordinating it there with the help of several Telugu language Wikipedians, I was surprised to see mention about Telugu Wikipedia articles in those news reports with a special mention to SWASTHA. So, When I saw this whole project, I found several goals, media mentions but would like to know what exactly are the steps and activities SWASTHA took to improve Covid-19 articles in languages where organisation members are not active (which means Indian language Wikipedias excluding Tulu, Kannada, Hindi, Bengali, and Urdu)? Is there at least a formal intimation about this to those communities in Village pumps? --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 12:00, 8 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pavan santhosh.s: I do not have an answer to your question but in the section above, we are describing mechanisms to support work in multiple languages of India, so here is an example for Telugu. Likewise, we are working on getting COVID-related words and phrases in all the project languages indexed as Wikidata lexemes, e.g. via Text-to-lexemes. Hello @Pavan santhosh.s:, copying my comment here: To reiterate from my previous message, those are Goals for anyone interested, those are not claims. For those two odd telugu articles we have volunteers in our team who might expand and improve these articles as and when they get time to do so. Hence, we have listed them under Goals. I am happy to learn about initiatives on Telugu Wikipedia and would esteem with great favour if we all work together and do our little bits at this hour. Can I request you to kindly update the Telugu Wikipedia Village Pump and float a discussion on how all of us can work collectively and together...? Hello @Innocentbunny:, I made above comment with clear and straight queries on 8th of April regarding this and I have not received any clarification except from Daniel unless I went ahead and removed those articles now again from the page. Neither you nor anyone from your team discuss before adding those links after April 9. You are asking me not to remove any part without further discussion which I will definitely respect, but I would also like to hear with what kind of discussion SWASTH team did in any of these Wikipedias these articles added here. Although you claim these are not claims and just goals, several media outlets published articles about "Covid-19 in Indian languages" and Swasth where there are claims loosely linking both the projects without a single mention about above said volunteers who are working to improve this content in their own languages. In general, anyone who wanted to co-ordinate effort in various language versions publishes their intent and interest in various village pumps and initiate a local version of the project in those languages. Not a single mention in any village pump or any mailing list is strange. Volunteers whom you are mentioning did not contribute anything in Telugu related to Covid-19 nor I could not see any attempt to discuss in local project page about this effort. @Pavan santhosh.s: You seem to be under a mistaken impression, this is a group of volunteers who gathered together to work together on a common project. It is neither driven by any affiliate or funded by Wikimedia Foundation or any of its present or previous affiliates. As previously stated, we encourage you to share the message on the village pump and nothing could be greater than more volunteers working together on a similar project. Regarding your 8th April comment, you do not have a correct classification of language communities, you may wish to check our member's page even now and please do not forget there are many more volunteers and some may not wish to be identified due to selective targeting and harassment. Daniel has also shared a response with specific examples from Telugu. We learn from everyone and subsequent to your comment we further updated our FAQ section. If you are concerned about Media, let me put this at first place, ' Media attention is not about everything in Wikipedia' and Yes there are so many communities working on COVID today, SWASTHA is just a small bit. I would like to put this straight and would urge you to take this in Good Faith, never attempted to over-shadow anyone or any other community work via Media outlets. Mockup of translation dashboard from Wikidocumentaries[edit]

A project called Wikidocumentaries seeks to organize information from Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons to accomplish various goals, including language translation. This is an experimental project which is not ready for public use. I saw their mockup of a translation interface, and wanted to share here as inspiration for how after some years projects like SWASTHA might manage translation.

COVID-19 Global Dashboard

This dashboard imagines that someone wants to translate COVID-19 articles into many languages. The automated report shows how much content gets translated into various languages.

Indian scientists Wikidata event[edit]

The the chief organizers are d:Wikidata:WikiProject India and the meta:CIS-A2K team.

This is relevant to my contributions on SWASTHA because if we had better lists of Indian scientists in Wikidata, then we could better sort medical publications, and more easily find the best information to cite to build out content for this project. Also, if we had lists of scientists, then when we associate scientists with their universities or medical schools or research institutes, then that makes students and experts more willing to collaborate with us.

This is an experimental project. I probably will put about 2 hours into this, so not a lot of time, but I like the idea of connecting SWASTHA a little with whatever other wiki projects anyone in India organizes when possible. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:14, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Images and infographics[edit]

I want to share two collections of infographics. I wish that we could start with a collection of infographics which made sense regardless of language, then do a little language translation to clarify them for local communities. Infographics are especially useful in South Asia because with one graphic, we can translate to many languages, and in many cases the same information applies to the entire region.
