Article Selection Discussion[edit]

Discussion[edit]

Have you had a look at the article list yet? I think I like the Dicer one best. This is early of course but just curious what you think. Rmiller587 (talk) 22:12, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah! That sounds like a good one. Do you want to edit the article list on the main page and claim it as ours then? I quick skimmed some articles about dicers and I guess we can go into the background and then expand upon different research done with it and the scientific implications. I see papers on roundworm, mice, and flies (drosophila) so we can do something like that as a first train of thought possibly? What do you think? Martinhyou (talk) 00:19, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I can't find any edit buttons on the main course page. Are you able to edit it? I'm wondering if Dr. Ogg needs to edit it for us. Or maybe I'm just experiencing "user error" :) I like your ideas. I was initially interested it because the knockout of the dicer gene is embryonically lethal. It's also necessary for stem cell viability. Those are just my initial interests without having read more than abstracts. I think we should dig through all the NCBI databases and link to generic information like chromosome position and maybe any microarray or sequencing data. Rmiller587 (talk) 02:40, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! Yeah we'll dig more through the stuff after I finish the homework due today... I can't find the edit button either. I just wrote on the talk page for the main page and asked if anyone else was interested in the topic because we are. Hopefully everyone is okay with it. Martinhyou (talk) 17:17, 25 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So I edited the group talk and included our discussion that we had on my page over here. Also, I started up the "rationale" part. Could you edit it and in your own little flair? :) It's around 178 words now but it's supposed to be 200-300 words Martinhyou (talk) 18:15, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I'm not getting notifications for updates to talk pages even though I've added them to my watchlist. I thought your rationale looked good to me but I guess -1 for us because I didn't see this message. Sorry, my fault! Any idea why I'm not getting notifications? Communicating on here is messy. Talk pages, sandboxes, group pages...I feel like the wikipedia Grinch :D Anyway, whose sandbox would you like to play in while we begin writing the article?Rmiller587 (talk) 17:37, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We can do it in your sandbox? I don't really care which one we do it in. We got -1 because there was spelling/grammar mistakes in the assessment by the way. Martinhyou (talk) 17:50, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I've already started adding some stuff and I'll finish it up tomorrow!Rmiller587 (talk) 04:52, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Key Points in Article Discussion[edit]

So we are going to have an intro, history, functioning mechanism, other important implications, and research with different species for dicer. What else should we do to make sure we achieve a GA level article? Martinhyou (talk) 20:19, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a GNF protein box template and I think we should fill in as much database info as we can. I would imagine this is imperative for getting a higher rating. Rmiller587 (talk) 04:57, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like an excellent idea! We'll continually fill in more of the template as we go along. Martinhyou (talk) 05:59, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've been looking for some pictures but I'm having trouble finding any that are commercially available. I used the search engine provided in our course outline and nothing really shows up. What do you think we should do? I have a couple good pictures that were from scientific articles, but I don't think they necessarily completely qualify with the wiki guidelines? Martinhyou (talk) 21:45, 10 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think we could use pictures from articles as long as we cite properly. If you want, we could stick to free articles that are publicly available. Rmiller587 (talk) 04:55, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I assume anything we can search for online and read is considered a free article. I've got a few pictures also that would be useful related to the crystal structure binding to DNA and one related with RNAi therapy. Martinhyou (talk) 05:59, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Great! I added some more articles to the sandbox. We have 12 listed there now with notes on 6 of them. I also posted on the Dicer talk page. Since there hasn't been any action there since 2006 I doubt we'll get a response but who knows. We can chat tonight to make sure we've covered everything for this weeks assignment. Rmiller587 (talk) 14:55, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good. I'll be back online at 11 pm EST or will also be on now until 5 pm EST periodically. Martinhyou (talk) 16:15, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure how you cited your sources on your sandbox, but they're not showing up at the bottom? Also, I did some editing to the outline so we included those articles in the appropriate locations (just for "cleanliness"). I'm not sure how to change your cited sources. Martinhyou (talk) 16:30, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about that. I was using a very old Dell XPS with Vista (yuck) and it refused to cooperate with Wikipedia so I couldn't use any of the templates from the "cite" drop down. Instead of not citing I used https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_pmid instead. Apparently it didn't work :( I have my Macbook Pro back now so I'll fix it. Rmiller587 (talk) 02:04, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed! Also, your edits are great. Thanks! Rmiller587 (talk) 02:05, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! As we slowly start putting things together, it's starting to look easier to do :) Martinhyou (talk) 02:49, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
