Jane Harman

FYI - there has been a little back and forth about the significance of Jane Harman's secret flip-flop on the Armenian Genocide resolution in '07 on her page. There were countless articles at the time, so if there are a couple of more references that could be added to the blurb, it would help I think. Deletions at Elâzığ

Recently a single new editor has been purging the article Elâzığ of most of its Armenian content. These deletions are regrettable and more eyes and continued vigilance is necessary. I don't think there is enough material currently in the Elazig article to warrent a separate article for Harput. Until there is, there would be a risk of it being used as a pov fork - as a way of moving anything Armenian-related out of the Elazig article and into the Harput one. Meowy 20:28, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

Banak Cathedral

Hi all, I need some help with the Banak Cathedral article that is a 7th century Zvartnots-style Armenian church now in Turkey. According to a Georgian user, the Cathedral was restored by Georgians at some point, and was renamed "Bana." According to Armenian sources it is an Armenian cathedral (architecturally it must be Armenian as there is no other circular Georgian church). Georgian users have repeatedly been removing all Armenian references, so your help in keeping an eye on this page as well as adding to the article would be great. New template: Major Armenian Churches

Please spread:

(One issue I am pondering is to rename it to "Major Armenian Churches of the Armenian Highland" to reduce it to the historical homeland of the Armenian people, and not add, say churches in Lebanon [e.g. Antelias Catholicossate] or Istanbul Patriarchate, or US churches, etc... But perhaps that should be a separate template, and allow this one to grow throughout the world?)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. Armenian speaker might help here

I am attempting on Turkish Van and Talk:Turkish Van (I'm sure you guys all know it's a moggy, not a motor vehicle) to engage in discussion with User:Zara-arush, who is I believe Armenian. Might even be a member of this project.??. He says on his userpage that he has professional level english, but unfortunately he's a bit optimistic about that, and I have spent the last three days trying to explain why his content is (a) not really intelligible in english or (b) not properly referenced. Compare my version of the legend of the coat colour with his version, which I've tried to edit into something that works on Wikipedia twice now. Trouble is, being uselessly English I don't really speak any foreign languages, I'm getting about a one word in three level of what he's saying to me, he's probably only getting the same from me. For the reference thing, I've tried pointing him at the page in Turkish, but as he's Armenian I've probably mortally offended him doing so, and he's still posting unreadable content with malformed references that don't support what he's saying. Any help in allowing us to communicate with each other gratefully received - I'm sure he's got loads of good stuff to contribute if we can get over the language issue.--Elen of the Roads (talk) 19:46, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Past Armenians

Have added categories for Category:Ancient Armenian people and Category:Medieval Armenian people (linked to the general people category for the period) with some rulers etc in them (more needed), as there were no categories for past Armenians. Probably not enough potential members to categorise by century, but possibly warranted for 16th-19th century if some Armenians identified for those centuries? NOTICE. RFC: Changes to Naming policies which may affect WikiProject naming conventions.

Following recent changes by some editors to the Wikipedia:Naming conventions policy page, a Referral For Comment, (RFC) is now being held to debate the removal of the passage specifying that individual WikiProject and other naming conventions are able to make exceptions to the standard policy of using Common Names as the titles of Wikipedia articles.

This WikiProject is being notified since it operates such a specific naming convention. Editors are invited to comment on the proposed change at this location. Xandar 00:48, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

The above "notification" is a grossly biased misrepresentation of the changes under discussion. The old version of the naming conventions policy tried to lay down binding rules; we don't work that way, so it was necessary also to make explicit exceptions. The new version articulates principles, and allows for consensus to establish how they should be applied. Thus there is no longer any need for exceptions. In fact, making exceptions is nonsense, since there are no rules to make exceptions to. These changes are good for specific conventions. Xandar is trying to induce moral panic in those who stand to gain the most from this. Xandar is only opposed to the new version because he thinks the wording, not the general thrust, weakens his position in a dispute unrelated to this RfC. Don't be fooled. Tourism in Armenia

I want to nominate the article Tourism in Armenia to the featured articles in Ukrainian wiki and that's why I need a more-less complete articles in other languages, especially in English. Please improve this article. Also I'd be realy grateful if somebody would create even a stub in other languages.

Also I have a yet one notice. Divot is realy experienced user in Russian wiki and it is realy unfortunate when nobody from enwiki answers on his question. We must cooperate in multilanguage projects.

Shabin-Karahisar Resistance

Someone blanked Shabin-Karahisar Resistance, claiming that there is no such thing as western Armenia and that the article was propaganda. Armenian Cities, Towns, and Villages

Hello everyone, I have been working to clean up articles on cities, towns, and villages in Armenia. I am trying to get as many photos of each town that I visit while I am here. Any assistance to get more photos of towns that I have not covered yet would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am needing help from WikiProject Armenia community to add the mayors, elevation, and area in sq. km. of each town to each of the article's Infoboxes. Banned Turkish nationalist keeps removing references to Armenian Genocide throughout Wikipedia

User:Shuppiluliuma is a banned Turkish ultranationalist, one of whose main obsessions is removing any mention of the Armenian Genocide from Turkey. He has created dozens of socks to do just that [1]. As soon as one sock is blocked, he creates another one, this one being the latest [2]. I'd rv him myself without thinking twice about it, but I am under a pesky 1R restriction on anything Balkans related, which may or may not include Turkey. Athenean (talk) 04:17, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Karabakh passports

Hi,

I am currently expanding the pages on passport of unrecognized countries. Does anyone know if Nagorno-Karbakakh issues its own passports ? http://www.karabakh.net/engl/gov?id=52 seems to indicate that they do, however so other sources seem to indicate that only Armenian or old Soviet passport are used. Hello. No, Artsakh issues only passports of the Republic of Armenia (also uses the Armenian currency "AMD") for the population to be able to travel in be involved in other international affairs. Do officials of Armenia issue these passports or are they actually issued by a Karabakh authority in its own right ? If the latter is true, then I wouldn't quite understand how that would fit in with the notion that Karabakh is an independant country rather than part of Armenia. Aram Satian

This composer appears to be very notable and active in the musical life of Armenia and should have an article on Wikipedia. The article needs a lot of improvement (I had to reduce it to a stub to remove copyvio), and its creator got off to a very rocky start. Orontes

Hi. Can someone from the project check the content of the articles Orontes II and Orontes III? I know nothing about Armenian history but the pages don't make sense. For one thing, they provide the same dates of reign but Orontes III is claimed to be the grandson of Orontes II. Also the info on Orontes II's reign is contradictory. The infobox says 336-331 BC, the article says fifth century BC and the category says sixth century BC. Brady Kiesling, Rediscovering Armenia

A number of articles have linked via one or other URL to an online PDF of Rediscovering Armenia by Brady Kiesling -- but now merely bring "File unavailable" or similar messages because the US embassy website has moved things around and (I think) deleted the file. I've located the PDF, here at web.archive.org.

I have edited Template:RediscoveringArmenia accordingly, but there is probably a lot more work to be done: none of the first two or three links to the PDF that I encountered used this template, and they were to different URLs.

(I notice that Rediscovering Armenia is also available here at armeniapedia.org and that [as part of a wiki] it's updatable and in some places updated [and perhaps augmented] -- but precisely because of this, Wikipedia can't cite it. The fact that the book is available at armeniapedia.org may or may not be worth a mention within the article on Brady Kiesling, but I don't think that it should be mentioned elsewhere.)

Ajabaj

I am attempting to deorphan the Ajabaj article and am running into some difficulty. The article states that Ajabaj is a town in Syunik Province, but the Syunik Province article states that there are only 109 communities in the province, all of which are listed, and Ajabaj is not in that list. Are towns different from communities in Armenia? If so, could a list of non-community towns be added to the Syunik Province article? Neelix (talk) 16:38, 10 June 2011 (UTC)

Aram, the king Armenia is named after

I've been disambiguating links to the disambiguation page Aram. I found multiple references in articles to Aram, a patriarch of Armenia, or the king who's name was used as the basis for the name Armenia. I have no expertise, but I was bold and have created a red link for that king, a scion of Hayk as Aram (son of Harma). There are now about 14 references to that red link and there should probably be an article on the individual, or perhaps it should be redirected to History of Armenia (Moses of Chorene). Category:Imperial Russian by occupation

There is a CfD discussion on Category:Imperial Russian people by occupation and many of its subcategories. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

Removal of text from article on Germany's 1915 chancellor

An editor deleted a section titled "Inaction on Armenian Genocide" from the article on German chancellor Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, claiming that it violated Wikipedia's NPOV rule. While in the article's present state it may be too large a portion of the whole, the remedy for this perceived imbalance is to flesh out the article with more solidly sourced information on the rest of Bethmann's career. Aside from that, the information (which conclusively proves that the German government was fully aware of Turkey's massacres while they were going on) is important to people studying the Armenian genocide. Edvard Mirzoyan

I'm looking for some help regarding Edvard Mirzoyan. The Armenian Wikipedia categorizes him as having died in 2012. The article provides no reference for that claim and I haven't found any Latin-script source to back it up. But searching for sources in Armenian is close to impossible for me so I would really appreciate it if someone from the project could take a look and let me know if there's a good source about his death or if the Armenian wiki info is incorrect. Can anyone say (and preferably sources) whether the villages of Barxudarlı, and Askipara and Karki/Tigranashen have been annexed by Armenia, or whether the Armenian government simply considers itself in control of the territory pending resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict? Help!

Could someone in this project group please take a look at what has been going on at the article Armenian surnames and then go to the article talk page to get some more discussion going and hopefully consensus? There's a new edit war brewing there as a result of (what I perceive to be) anger about allegedly non-Armenian names from a couple of folks (one is apparently Georgian. I've given some advice on what to do, but it's not being taken and frankly, the atmosphere is getting a little heated and out of control. Plus, there seems to possibly be a bit of a language-barrier. Help with an article?

I'm asking for help with the article Ruben Gasparyan. I'll be blunt- the article is a promotional nightmare since it's chock full of promotional prose and needs a complete re-write and scrubbing to remove the peacock phrasing. The trouble I ran into is that I couldn't really find anything in English to show notability. It's likely that coverage only exists in Armenian, so I was wondering if anyone can do a search for the guy and see if there was/is any coverage of him. Help discussing edit war

Hello, I've been embroiled in an edit conflict on the Armenians in Turkey article, and I would like you guys to go over and see whether my version seems acceptable compared to the prior one, and if so back me up in the chat. The controversy they have is that I made brief mention of Crypto Armenians for clarification purposes, which they think justifies reverting my almost 5,000 character overhaul that included demographic data on little known areas with Armenians still in Western Armenia like Diyarbakir, fixed typos, and added several new citations. In attempting to update the Roman Colleges page from information largely from the 1912 Catholic Encyclopedia, I noticed that a number of the national colleges have their own page, but the Pontificio Collegio Armeno does not. The College (and for that matter St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church) appears to be an important center for the Armenian community in Rome. Every flag of a historic entity should - of course - not be own work, if we show it on wikipedia, but it should be a copy of a reliable source which shows scientifically that this flag is correct and was used in that period. I strongly doubt if this is true for the files mentioned (File:Arshakuni.svg and File:Artaxiad.svg). Are these flags to anyone's knowledge mentioned in reliable scientific publications on Mets Hayk? The current attribution is not enough, and therefore they should be removed I would say, unless we got confirmation from good sources that these flags indeed once flew. It attempts to eliminate the Armenian identity of the tsiranapogh, by laying claim the official name is the duduk. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Several existing articles

Like I put in the title, there are several existing articles that are mentioned as to be yet created. Ararat Plain instead of commonly misattributed Ararat Valley, elections in armenia for "electoral system in armenia" (similar articles of other countries on the topic are also titled "elections in this and that country"), constitutional Court of Armenia for the "supreme court", "judicial system" is under the title legal system of Armenia. And there might be other existing articles too.

Instructions on The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey: how to complete the article

Hey, guys! I started The Armenian Massacres in Ottoman Turkey. I don't know if/when I'll get around to finishing the article, but note that it's controversial.

An important thing: Take WP:WEIGHT into consideration! Do a literature review (read all of the associated book reviews), and write the article giving the majority positions the most weight. Give minority positions less weight.

As you can see, my submission was declined for not adhering to a neutral POV and for lacking sources to support his notability . As I am a new Wiki user, I would appreciate the help of more experienced editors in the resubmission process. Help needed: Kingdom of Parisos, at Simple English Wikipedia...

Hello there, and sorry to bother with a requwst that may look a little strange. I am from the Simple English Wikipedia. It has an article simple:Kingdom of Parisos. Recently, another article was deleted. We would need your help in the following:

• Did the kingdom exist(probably, FRWP has an article on it, RUWP has one)?
• Transliterating the original spelling, would it be better to have the spelling 'Parisos', or 'Parissos'?

We are a small wiki, and so far, we don't have people who can read Cyrillic or Armenian script. Also, it would be nice if you could add a reliable source to the article. Several thousand articles exist for purported places in Azerbaijan and Armenia that were mass-created in a problematic way from GEOnet. We have had similar problems with Iran articles (see earlier on the same noticeboard) and California articles (see Wikipedia:Reliability of GNIS data and Wikipedia:WikiProject California/GNIS cleanup task force) and have quite a number of areas not even tackled yet. A discussion of which articles we do not trust to be fundamentally accurate in the context that they give to readers/editors, and whether and what to mass-delete; as well as ways to filter out the good articles, and any articles that are simply duplicates because places have been renamed; is on-going on the Administrators' main noticeboard.

We are also, please note, on the cusp of mass-deleting a couple of hundred articles from the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh/Republic of Artsakh area that were mass-created with a notice that they could not be found otherwise than from the source GEOnet database. If you have any concerns, now is the time to speak up.

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Massacres of Azerbaijanis in Armenia (1917–1921)

The article Massacres of Azerbaijanis in Armenia (1917–1921) survived an AFD in which there was an inappropriate title change. There are a multitude of issues, that would normally preclude an advancement to B-class, but the title thus timeline is very questionable among other issues. Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments are used by Wikipedia editors to rate the quality of articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project decides to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. WikiProject Women in Green is holding a month-long Good Article Edit-a-thon event in October 2023!

Running from October 1 to 31, 2023, WikiProject Women in Green (WiG) is hosting a Good Article (GA) edit-a-thon event with the theme Around the World in 31 Days! All experience levels welcome. Never worked on a GA project before? We'll teach you how to get started. Or maybe you're an old hand at GAs – we'd love to have you involved! Participants are invited to work on nominating and/or reviewing GA submissions related to women and women's works (e.g., books, films) during the event period. We hope to collectively cover article subjects from at least 31 countries (or broader international articles) by month's end. GA resources and one-on-one support will be provided by experienced GA editors, and participants will have the opportunity to earn a special WiG barnstar for their efforts.

A question regarding "High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia)" article

Dear community,

I'd like to create a page on Wikipedia about the "Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia)" and tell more about its' mission and current programs. As far as I know, this page does not exist in English. However, there is a page that describes a similar position - High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia) and it has an Armenian translation which is called Հայաստանի սփյուռքի նախարարություն (eng. Ministry of Diaspora of Armenia - which is a government agency but not a position). Also the current English article has the template at the bottom of the page which is called Government of Armenia and the article is mentioned as a ministry there (but in fact this article is not about the ministry, but about the position). My question is - should I create a new page for the government agency or should I change the name and the content for the current one? I don't know what to do to move forward, so I decided to ask here.

Good question- I've been wondering about this too. We need to confirm whether or not the ministry itself even exists, or if it was entirely replaced by the position (the official who works on Diaspora affairs). If a separate department or ministry exists, then I support the creation of the article. However, if the department/ministry was abolished and/or replaced then there is no point and the current article should be maintained as is. It all depends what we can confirm based on WP:RS. If you look at the edit history on High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia), in July 2022, Revolution Saga moved the article claiming that the Ministry of Diaspora no longer exists and was replaced by the High Commissioner. Hi @Yunido and @Archives908, the Ministry of Disapora was in fact abolished back in early 2019 and replaced with the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs. I forgot to add more information with relevant citations when I moved the page. The Armenian Wikipedia page Yunido mentioned simply hasn't been updated since the changes. I don't think it would make sense to create a separate article for the office (as in the government body) and the office (as in the position) of commissioner itself. It should be one or the other, and there is no need for an article about the defunct ministry now, since the High Commissioner's office was explicitly created as a replacement for it. This is the relevant law where the abolition of the ministry and its replacement by the High Commissioner's Office is described, and you can read more about it at these links: [4] [5], [6]. @Revolution Saga thanks for the detailed answer! But aren't the concepts of the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs and High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs a little bit different? It's the same difference like Ministry of Defence of Armenia (as a goverment body) and Minister of Defence (Armenia) (as a position). According to the official website of the Office there are two different concepts: [1], [2]. In order not to confuse these two concepts (if a reader is not immersed in the topic, then they may get confused in these), I would create another page specifically for the Office. Or I would rename the current article of High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia) to Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia). The current programs and its activities should be mentioned there (since they are carried out not only by the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, but also by a team of employees and departments of the Office). OK, that makes sense. I forgot that there are generally separate pages for ministries and similar government bodies and their head offices, although in my opinion this can sometimes be superfluous. I think that the wisest move would be to rename the current article High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia) to "Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs (Armenia)" as you said and have all of the information about the office, its activities and its head there. But making a separate article for the office and the commissioner might also be acceptable. Revolution Saga (talk) 09:42, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
