Project Members

I changed the four tildes to three tildes on the guideline for member list entries - there's no need to specify when each member joined (timestamp), and the ~~~ macro inserts your display name without a timestamp. My own recommendation is for current members to change their entries on the list accordingly, since the timestamps make the list look pretty messy. -Erik Harris 12:45, 15 July 2006 (UTC)


Generally, it makes sense to list project members in alphabetical order. Given the combination of aliases and real names, is there any consensus on whether a real name should be inserted based on the last name or first name? With just full names, or just aliases, it seems a bit more cut-and-dry than with a combination. -Erik Harris 19:25, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Suggested Article - Comedy

I see that someone listed the Lunatic as a possible article - maybe we could do a joint article with the Lunatic, the Whistling Shrimp, and the Skits-o-Phrenics, and have it be a "Cornell Comedy" thing (I'm not sure how to title that). I'm in the Shrimp, so I've got some information I could condense into a part of an article. Cornell's got a pretty impressive list of comedy alumni (a couple Emmy winners, the guy who wrote Matchstick Men, Elephant Larry, and some other people of note I can't recall offhand), which might be worth mentioning. Aerial photos

I just remembered that I have a bunch of great aerial shots of the campus taken by a friend when we were flying with East Hill Flying Club. I'll get his permission and post them on my user page or another convenient place. They include North, West, Central, and the athletics area. New Cornell pics

Today, the weather is great at Cornell. In honor of this rare moment, I have checked out a library camera to take some new Cornell pics. I would be taking them, rather than updating Wikipedia, right now were it not for the problem that whoever last took photos didn't recharge the batteries! Shame on them! *sigh* So, expect to see fresh photos by tomorrow evening. Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. That's a format bug in the last full "piece"... I'll see if I can find it. If you need a guide, use Wikipedia:WikiProject Georgia Tech... Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Deleted article: The Class Notes

Okay, why has the article on the Class Notes been deleted? The Chordials, Hangovers, and Cayuga's Waiters all still have their articles. If the article needed cleanup or revision, it should have been marked as such, not deleted.

The Notes have been a fixture on the Cornell campus since 1983. Where's the article gone?

Mcgraw.jpg

I noticed that there was a mention on the page for Image:Cornell Mcgraw USA.jpg, currently on Wikimedia Commons, to use the local Mcgraw.jpg instead. Why is this, exactly? The two images are exactly the same, and if anything, the image on Commons has a superior (more specific) name and would logically be the preferred image. --fuzzy510 03:31, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

How does one flag a possible error?

I'm new to this, so excuse such a dumb question. I'm Class of '68 and noticed that the write-up of the takeover of Willard Straight Hall is listed as having occured in April 1969. It has been almost 40 years, so my memory could be an issue here, but I'm pretty sure the takeover occurred while I was on campus in 1968 (and I was gone by Spring of '69). There are three possibilities: 1. I'm just plain wrong, 2. It really was 1968, OR 3. There were two events (one in 68 and one in 69). Someone might want to double check. The incident is mentioned in a new book entitled Liberal Fascism by Jonah Goldberg (pg 163-164)and it references 1969 but my guess is that he got the date here. RfC for WP:BOOSTER

There is a request for comment about whether or not WP:BOOSTER documents a standard consensus and good practice that all editors and school/college/university articles should follow as an official policy or guideline. Madcoverboy (talk) 19:28, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

To begin, I am not a participant in the project. I recently came across this article on NP Patrol and put several tags on it. The primary author either does not know about Wikipedia procedures and guidelines or does not care. There are multiple issues with the article most notably the lack of references. We have not been able to engage the editor in conversation on the talk page. I hoping someone here who is knowledgeable on the subject can help this article or even recommend that it isn't notable and should be deleted. I also understand this same editor has been posting unreferenced information (possibly factual errors) on other Cornell related articles. Thanks for you help! New Campus Photographs

Hello,

When I decided to get involved in this Wikiproject, I uploaded about ten campus images from my personal archive, but most of my photos weren't really "objective" or "uncluttered" enough for use on a site like this :). So today, I took over 400 photos on campus for the express purpose of uploading them to Wikimedia Commons. I narrowed those down to about 60, available in the gallery below. I hope these will prove useful, and any comments would be appreciated!

Inactive project members. Remove from main list?

I checked everyone's contributions, and these members have not made any edits to Wikipedia since before September 2008:

I did not pay attention to what pages had been edited by the members of this project recently, so it's possible that there are other members who have not edited any Cornell-relevant articles in the last year.

I propose we remove these individuals from the main project member list (since it's getting quite long) and perhaps add a note to the bottom of the list pointing to a list of inactive members to be maintained on a separate subpage of the project.

Greetings, my name is Greg and I'm active in the (amongst others) Twitter article. Recently someone added information to the article stating that the founder of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, studied at Cornell University. Stating that this information shouldn't have been in the opening sentence of the article, I removed it. Several separate editors (mainly IPs) then proceeded to re-add this information, in the same place, despite warnings form myself and other editors.

This was irritating, but I could see the logic. That is, until Jack Dorsey recently made it public that he never went to Cornell. Despite this, people continue to add the information. They also insist on doing so on his own article and claim that Gregory House studied at the institution as well (added to House (TV series) too). I and other editors can find no evidence for this to be true.

If anybody in this WikiProject is aware of why people keep adding this - maybe there's a notice to do so somewhere - can I ask that you politely stop people doing so by pointing out that what they're adding simply isn't true? As far as I can tell, it's more than one person involved in this problem.

  • How about working on the History of Cornell University. I have been trying for a year to bring it up the "Good Article" status and my two nominations have been rejected. From 2006 onward, it was correctly characterized as just the founding and the Straight takeover, so I have systematically added sections to make in comprehensive in scope. Most of the GA review hit the founding sections as being under footnoted with archaic prose. Maybe we can work on the criticisms from Talk:History of Cornell University/GA2 Racepacket (talk) 15:49, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

GA Nomination

The Cornell University article was the WP:UNI collaboration of the month for August 2010. Based on that work, I cleaned up a few items placed a GA nomination. It was reviewed promptly, but failed based on a number grounds. Based on that review, I have trimmed back a few sections, moving content into the subsidiary articles, found missing references and copy edited. This week, I have renominated the article. Feel free to continue to improve it. However, try to avoid lengthening the history, people or student activities sections of the main article. The bots have identified a few dead links. Cornell literary societies

Apparently there has been a situation unfolding without notice to WikiProject Cornell University. (They have been notifying WikiProject New York instead.) A group of new editors have written an article on the Irving Literary Society which existed at Cornell from 1868 to 1887. A number of sources indicate that Irving disbanded at that point. The sources cited treat Irving on an equal basis with three other large literary societies at that time. Therefore, I moved the article to Cornell literary societies with a separate section on each group and the rest of the article discussing their common characteristics. I deleted all post-1888 material, because there is no independent secondary source documenting a connection between Irving and a particular male-only residential social fraternity which now claims to be its successor.

Subsequently, the editor created a POV-folk at The Irving Literary Society. The assistance of active WikiProject Cornell volunteers is needed to improve Cornell literary societies and to generally help resolve this situation. Thanks, Racepacket (talk) 14:03, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Today, a number of editors involved in the The Irving Literary Society fork were blocked indefinitely for sockpuppetry. I have also started an AfD on that article and am removing post-1888 references to it in other biographies. Some of the purported ILS members never attended Cornell or were active members of fraternities other than the one in question. Again, everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia and to Cornell-related articles. (I hope that we can find more ways to encourage Cornellians to participate at Wikipedia.) But we all have to follow the rules and avoid burdening each other with non-productive make-work. The Cornell literary societies is our current collaboration of the month. In August, the main Cornell University article was the WikiProject Universities collaboration of the month. A lot of work went into adding missing sources for the article and other clean up. Since the goal of the collaboration was to take the former Featured Article back to GA status, I nominted the article for GA. It was rejected, and I worked around the clock for 3 days to address all of the listed concerns and renominated it. After a wait and a extensive review, it has failed. While picking up the kid at the Alma Mater, I took photos of as many buildings as I could, especially the new ones. Well, they were new to me, and some are new to Wikimedia Commons. Proposed Policies

I think we should establish consensus and post policies on the project page regarding: 1) moving or renaming articles - I propose at least a one week notice period before moving/merging Cornell articles. 2) department-level articles - History and Applied Economics and Management (nee Agricultural Economics) have separate articles. Is that a good thing? Should we strive for articles for each academic deoartment or field? 3) article naming conventions - in 2006, we moved toward starting most article about Cornell with "Cornell University" as the first two words of the title. With the Dyson School and the Johnson Graduate School of management, we have moved them to be outside this pattern. Is that a good thing? 4) excess reliance on CU websites - when can we rely upon them, what are preferred methods for avoiding over-reliance on them. 5) Preferred citation format for archived Sun, Chronicle, Cornell Alumni News and Cornell Era articles. I wrote the HIST department article because I had wanted to know more about my home department and decided that such info was Wikiworthy. I proposed the Physics Department because it is, quite frankly, a legendary department (Just think of how many Manhattan Project members were associated with the department!). Obviously, some departments have had more noteworthy professors and students pass through their doors than others, so not all departments need to have their own articles eventually. --Xtreambar (talk) 05:40, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
I tend to agree with Xtreambar that many of the departments at Cornell are wiki-worthy, but most probably are not (IMHO). There are probably some guidelines that we can flesh out to decide whether or not a particular department deserves a page or not. The sooner we get some guidelines, the sooner we can start violating them ;). The Physics Dept, was given as an example because of its numerous significant faculty and grads. It seems like a good smell test to me to have at least enough profs/grads with their own wiki articles to field a baseball team before the department gets an article based on that criterion. Many other departments are notewothy either because they are now or were at some other time unique-- like Home Economics. We certainly don't need to be too formal on this, but some guidelines prevents there from being too many articles on departments that are not exceptionally noteworthy. Sadly, I think that my own Department of City and Regional Planning is likely in this group-- although CornellRockey may disagree.
Also, we should probably establish a convention for naming departments. This is similar to Racepacket's point #3, in which he points out a previously established convention of begining most Cornell article titles with "Cornell University." Here are a couple of proposed conventions (the first is my favorite):
1.) Cornell University Department of __________
2.) Cornell University College of _____________ Department of ____________
3.) Cornell University ______________ Department
4.) Department of _______________, Cornell University
5.) ?????
Finally, RE: Racepacket 's query #4, I've leaned heavily on The New York Times for a lot of my Cornell-centric articles, as well as Bishop's "Cornell: A History."

I opt for "Cornell University Department of ___" because there are no cases of departments in different college having the same name. Also some department such as Geology have started in one college (Arts) and then moved to a different college (Engineering). Racepacket (talk) 04:12, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Departments moves but there is no duplication. The "Division of Biological Sciences" was in both A&S and Ag. When the Ford Foundation expired, it was dissolved, and now there are a half dozen different departments split between the two schools. (Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, Entomology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Neurobiology & Behavior, Plant Biology, and Biomedical Sciences) There are separate "Physics" (A&S) and "Applied and Engineering Physics" (Eng) faculty groups. List of Cornell People

It would help that editors wanting to restructure central elements of our Project discuss them here before making changes. For several years, we had List of Cornell University People which included a list of notable faculty, notable alumni, a table of presidents, a table of Board chairs and a athletic directors. That has been redirected to Cornell University. I propose to reverse the redirect, keep the table materials and have {{main}} cross references to the new alumni and faculty list. Any thoughts? Hearing no objections, I have gone back to the single List article rather than three separate articles. It would be hard to justify the notability of a separate list of Presidents, Board Chairs or Athletic directors. Please let us discuss things in the future before making major changes. Cornell Concert Commission

Hi there! My name is Lauren Smith and I am currently a senior Communication major in CALS. For a class project, my group and I are creating a Wikipedia page for the Cornell Concert Commission. I was wondering if anyone here could provide some insight to our project thus far. Howdy all! Cornell NYC Tech was created on 27 January with some fairly big WP:WEIGHT issues. Most of the content focussed (in an unbalanced way, in my opinion) on controversies about the development and the involvement of an Israeli institute. It included a large tract on the institute and it's apparent crimes against various groups, completely unrelated to the subject.

I came across it during a new page patrol and have helped another (concerned) editor to clean it up a bit. But it needs a lot more work. Editing drive anyone? There are heaps of great sources from the NYT and various other publications. I've added your project's header to the talk page (with some others) to get some input. Improving the China-Cornell-Oxford Project Article

Hello everyone,
I recently watched "Forks Over Knives," a documentary that advocates a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. To me, the most influential piece of evidence in this documentary was the explanation of the findings of the China-Cornell-Oxford Project. This study, led by Cornell professor of nutritional biochemistry T. Colin Campbell, was one of the most comprehensive studies of nutrition ever conducted. Its findings promote the vegan lifestyle by linking animal products to a variety of health issues including type I diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and low cholesterol. After watching the film, I was very interested in learning more about this study, but I noticed this article was a stub. This page is considered low importance as a part of Wikiproject china, but I think it should also be considered a part of the Cornell University WikiProject. I am going to begin converting this page from a stub to a full article, and I would greatly appreciate any help and editing tips!

Leaflet for Wikiproject Cornell University at Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.
