Two templates very similar

Colleagues, as a newcomer not quite sure where to turn: found two suspiciously similar templates, Template:Czech Republic topics and Template:The Czech Republic topics. Is it a mistake? Should they be united? Littledogboy (talk) 23:04, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Anyone else

I'm just checking my facts before making claims that may be incorrect. To the best of my knowledge Martin Růžička (a member of the Czech Republic men's national ice hockey team who plays for a Russian club) is the only non-tennis player British/American citizen on en.wp deliberately given an "English name." As you know, this article was a part of a mass anti-diacritics movement by user:Dolovis. There were hundreds of ice hockey articles created by him deliberately without diacritics. Oh, I wouldn't. Even the red links are useful. As long as they will be present there, the probability that someone will find useful to write about the topic is much higher than otherwise.

Stray template

There is an apparently forgotten Template:Czech Cabinet, which is supposed to give current cabinet members, but until today presented the old Fišer’s cabinet, and which is currently transcluded only in the Petr Nečas article. I think the template should be either more widely deployed and regularly maintained, or deleted to avoid confusion.—Emil J. 14:21, 30 November 2012 (UTC)

I've deployed the template already on the existing pages. Good idea about templates to update, what did you have in mind other than the template mentioned in this discussion, Filelakeshoe? Another stray template and duplicate at that

Similarly to the TMPL:Czech Cabinet, the Template:Czech Cabinets is stray onne, it is also duplicate to the Template:Cabinets of the Czech Republic. It is supposed to give all Czech cabinets untill now. It is unmaintained and only transcluded in the First Klaus' cabinet and in the template the last Nečas' cabinet is actually missing. Also by the format it is second-rate to the Template:Cabinets of the Czech Republic. What to do with it? It seems, that to delete it and replace it, in that one instance, would be the best thing. (I am going to replace it now in the Klaus' cabinet art.) What do You think? --Reo ⁺ 17:11, 27 December 2012 (UTC)

Rename Legal system of the Czech Republic

Hi, when starting Legal system of the Czech Republic, I thought it was a good translation of právní řád České republiky. Now I think moving the page to a more general title would be beneficial. Can you please help me decide between Law of the Czech Republic, or Law in the Czech Republic, or Czech law, or even Law of Czech Republic? (Mind you, the article is still work in progress.) Klobasnek

No. I've seen similar food in the Czech Republic (I mean varieties of sausage baked in dough), but it wasn't named "Klobasnek". The word sounds non-Czech, apart from traditional "klobásek" or "klobása". I guess it was invented in Texas. --Vejvančický (talk / contribs) 08:01, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

I have, but not by that name. I had a friend from Texas here in Prague who was shocked that the Czech "koláče" look nothing like this, meanwhile I was totally bemused by the idea that someone would put sausage in a koláč. It is most certainly a Texan thing. Also remember that the Texan permutations of West Slavic languages (which have a relatively rich history by American linguistic standards) would be pretty difficult for Europeans to understand, so "klobasnek" may be/have been a legitimate word in Texan Czech. - filelakeshoe (t / c) 09:01, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Nah that's definitely from East Slavic, azbuka transcription - the only English source which mentions "Dozhinki" says it's a traditional name used in Ukraine. Czech grammar question

Hello, I was wondering while editing the Grammatical gender article how Czech might treat groups of mixed gender. For example, if one has a feminine and a neuter noun together, what gender are they considered to be? Let's say (apologies for any errors): jablko a jahoda jsou dobré? or dobrá? or maybe dobrí? The rule I always remembered is that the "priority" of genders is always: 1: masculine animate, 2: masculine inanimate/feminine, 3: neuter. So the "highest priority" gender which is present in the group is the one that the verb or adjective takes. Just remember that the neuter plural forms "ta jablka jsou dobrá" are often restricted to written Czech only. - filelakeshoe (t / c) 10:32, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, yes, that's more or less what I deduced from the page linked to (with the added proviso that the result can be neuter plural only if every component is neuter and plural, apparently). I've written up my summary at the bottom of Czech declension (and linked to it from the grammatical gender article, as an example of a quite complex rule system), should anyone wish to take a look and add/correct/improve anything. Hmm, you may be right. This BBC article says that cage beds are used only in the Czech Rep. and Slovakia, however, this (more up-to-date) source says they are used also in other European countries. Danish students in Prague

In February of this year, there were a number of problems with Danish students in the city, getting drunk and damaging hotels. I have a number of sources with which to start an article Prague Monitor (second) Czech Radio, Prague Post and Copenhagen Post (second) UPI - possibly "see also" link at Prague Post but I have no idea as to a suitable title. Hah, I don't think that's really notable enough for its own article, lest we also start British Stag Parties in Bratislava, Drunk German Motorcycle Fetishists in Brno and a whole load of others. It would be a difficult article to write and keep NPOV especially if only written from newspaper sources, which are usually written with some agenda or other behind them. We shouldn't be too surprised. Czech[ia] and Chechnya sound similar in English and the Czech Republic is far better known than Chechnya, so it's an understandable mistake to think of the place you've heard of. hah, as I pointed out to someone on Facebook, if Mr. President decided to rename Prague "Zeman City" and Vysočina Region "Zeman Region" the same confusion would occur! Seasons in Czech (Association) football

I have created three new categories for Czech football seasons ie Category:2010–11 in Czech football, Category:2011–12 in Czech football & Category:2012–13 in Czech football. These are parent categories for Category:Czech Republic football clubs 2010–11 season etc, and should include other articles. As categories like Category:2011 in Czech sport and Category:2010 in Czech television use "Czech" not "Czech Republic" I think the use of just "Czech" is justified for seasons in (association) football as well. Thanks, I added the league articles. While we're on this topic, I'm not fond of the title "2012–13 Czech 2. Liga" - firstly "Liga" shouldn't be capitalised, and secondly that league is no longer called "2. česká fotbalová liga" but "národní fotbalová liga" (national football league), can we name next season's article accordingly? - filelakeshoe (t / c) 13:21, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

"Czech national football league"? It is "national" as opposed to the semi-professional divisions below it which are divided into regions, the parent article could include all this info. We could also just use "národní (fotbalová) liga" as a title, we don't bother translating e.g. Nemzeti Bajnokság or Serie A, though admittedly the latter is far more familiar to people. - filelakeshoe (t / c) 07:31, 17 May 2013 (UTC)

Btw, in case someone beats me to creating 2013–14 Gambrinus liga (we should know who'll be in it this weekend), you might want to copy stuff from here, I was messing around trying to work out how to do that thing they do on the Premier League articles and list Prague clubs in the bottom corner. You have probably noticed the recent news on Czech political scene ... I have attempted to summarize the most important facts in a subsection of the article Petr Nečas. I don't think the title of the section is perfect or that description of this event in his bio is OK, but I can't think of anything better. The event should be covered separately, but again, I'm not sure how to name it. Perhaps 2013 Czech government scandal? Here are the 2 caveat paragraphs to which I now add a Papal third:

History Caveat Wiki - It should be noted that until the late 1980's this Holy Sign Icon was practically universally known without using the name of Jesus, as The Infant of Prague, in exact fulfillment of Hosea 2:16-17. Also, the only truly known origin of the hand-less Icon, a pile of rubble after the Thirty Years War, was later verified and supported in the nineteenth century by the events at Lourdes, France, around a pile of rubble. There have also been repeated fabricated attempts to base this powerful Holy Self-made miraculous Sign-Icon of Prague in Spain, because the timing of its discovery and Hosea fulfillment contradicts the anti-Semitic text then being prepared by Mary of Agreda in Spain solely to try to sell an apocryphal, scandalous, sinfully violative of the first two Commandments and therefore impossible name, "Joakim", for the father of Mary already 1000 years honorably secured as Levite "Amram" by the Holy Qoran.

Papal Caveat Wiki (again) - Firstly, it should be noted in regard to the so-called Ratzinger "coronation" that for this event the hair on the Prague Holy Icon was painted unprecedented non-Jewish, non-Jacob (Genesis 25:21 et seq.), red. Also, the September 2009 event itself either never officially took place or could not last becase the Sanctuary of The Infant of Prague had been violated in April, 2009. Apparently Ratzinger had not cared to notice this. But when the Czech Republic rightly excluded/deported from Czech territory David Duke as undesirable or even dangerous in late April, 2009, it neither then nor thereafter made any provision for the human rights of Duke (who had actually kept an image of the Infant of Prague on his website the whole time he was getting his PhD), to obtain even a limited and guarded day pass access to the Holy Infant of Prague Shrine Sanctuary, which is not "Czech Territory". No one has sued the Czech government or the Vatican over this yet.

(Papal caveat contiued): But of course Ratzinger did not notice the April Prague Sabctuary violation as he wormed his way, with his Knight Waldheim, into the Holy Mosque on Temple Mount two weeks later on Msy 13, 2009. BLP still using American name 15 years later?

George Zidek, name given to Jiři Žídek Jr. (1973), seems a little weird. He played basketball in US for only 3 years then went on to Germany using his real (Czech) name. In ictu oculi (talk) 07:24, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

It is a little weird. This reflects his common name in American English, and his many years in European baketball have little coverage in English compared to his American career. His Czech surname is not Žídek but Zídek, In ictu oculi. He spent in US only a brief part of his career (although he became very famous in the Czech Rep. at that time as the first Czech NBA player) and didn't change his name, apart from Bobby Holík. He is still pretty active in the Czech/European basketball scene (this article by Hospodářské noviny (September 2013, in Czech) says: "Zídek ... is one of the most important personalities in the European basketball. He is a member of the commissions of both European and International Basketball Federation (FIBA), coordinator of transnational relations between the Russian VTB League and the Euroleague." Yes, English Wikipedia uses American English names when they have achieved some degree of fame in English under that name. No shock or disrespect there. He did receive quite a lot of mention in the American press and not just the sporting press, during his brief time in the US. Thanks, I didn't notice it was Zídek, being more familiar with Ivo Žídek than basketball. Bobby Holík became a US citizen in 1996, I think it's a bit different from a green card for 3 years. Not at all, except I think saying that "Pilsen" is no longer used in English is wrong – the krajský úřád and the city's homepage both use it – I'm not advocating another RM here, btw, since I think we established that Plzeň was used just as commonly, but it's still used to talk about more than just historical events. - filelakeshoe (t / c) 19:56, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

I think you're looking at the opposite end of the edit. I was trying to remove the "not used in English" notes from Pilsen, Budweis, etc. - all of which I found in modern sources. Sorry, yeah, I got confused there. To be honest I prefer your general note about German names, because it explains to the reader why we (and every encyclopedia and travel guide) have this unwritten rule about putting the German name in the lede sentence, and may help them understand historical writing. But it would be good to stress that for example "Prague" and "Elbe" are used more often in relation to their Czech names than "Franzensbad" and "Giant Mountains", though difficult to verify, I suppose. - filelakeshoe (t / c) 20:09, 3 December 2013 (UTC)

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

The English Wikipedia and the name of the article Czech Republic is mentioned in a today's article at novinky.cz (in Czech) There seems to be a civic initiative promoting the shorter name of our country - Czechia. Here is their official website, for your information. Members of the initiative are said to write informed posts on the topic Czechia for the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, but its administrators delete their contributions immediately. "Articles there did not survive more than five minutes," complained Čižmářová (one of the contributors and members of the initiative [10]). I would like to point out that there is the article Name of the Czech Republic, which mentions the initiative and also various points of view around the issue. The article is open to editing and improvements. But we are not a platform to promote someone's initiatives and personal goals, we record only established facts. Yeah, those "informed articles" were just essays of extensive soapboxing which approached the issue from a "let us explain why everyone is wrong" standpoint. Also, anyone using Miloš Zeman as an authority on English usage should be taken out and shot, since he can't even string a coherent sentence together in the language. I guess that one of their contributions was the repeatedly deleted article Czechia - the name dispute, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Czechia - the name dispute, infested by SPA accounts obviously from the Czechia Civic Initiative. Czechia again

Hi. I thought the last time we discussed the country name, the consensus was that "Czech Republic" was the WP:COMMONNAME and that "Czechia" was an acceptable, if less common, English alternative. I ask because User:Yopie is expunging "Czechia" from dozens of Wiki articles on the basis that it's wrong. I would have thought we should reflect the real world and have mainly "Czech Republic" but also some instances of "Czechia". So as a general rule we should leave articles as they are. Complete agreement, I think changing one name to the other unless the use of the name in the context actually is wrong (e.g. Charles IV was born in the Czech Republic - and even then I think I would sooner change it to Bohemia) is disruptive and we should get consensus for a 1RR on it. It will focus on individual notable artworks in Czech galleries and Museums and our aim is to create short articles similar to Apollo and Daphne (Bernini), or Judith Slaying Holofernes (Artemisia Gentileschi). What kind of "grant proposal"? Does that mean that the Czech Ministry of Culture would be your client, expecting nice articles promoting Czech artworks for their money? Do you want to accept only native English speakers? Do you know that Wikipedia is an open project and anyone can edit here? You have no guarantee that I (or other poor non-native English speakers) won't modify the articles :) You are the administrator of http://www.artlib.cz/, is it you who pay 10,000 CZK for a selected article, or Nadace Český literární fond, or other institution? Why did you remove the article Joska Skalník from the Czech WikiProject Art Library (I assume it is the same project you offer here under the name "Masterworks of Art in Wikipedia")? Was it because of your disagreement with an editor who created it with critical section mentioning the artist's collaboration with the Communist Czechoslovak State Police? Your suspicions are completely unsubstantiated. I have proposed this project simply because the notable Czech artworks were ignored on Wikipedia (see article Gothic art, for instance) and also because the final goal of Art Library project were translations of complete articles into English. Premiums of 10 000,-CZK were donated by foundations to stimulate participation of students (of art history) and to create a competitive environment. I will not further comment article on Joska Skalník - it does not conform to our standards regarding articles on artists and we cannot support contributions on other persons.--NoJin (talk) 10:10, 17 November 2014 (UTC)
