Wikidata structure for dams and reservoirs

Hi. I would like to ask for your opinion on this discussion at Wikidata. It is important that we come to a common agreement, so that Wikidata pages of all dams and reservoirs can follow the same structure. Rehman 08:44, 8 October 2017 (UTC)

USGS Dams WikiData Imported to Mix'n'match

If anyone is interested I've imported the USGS names of Dams and ID's from GNIS to the WikiData matching tool Mix'n'match which will allow enhanced maintenance tools, lists, and infoboxes if links are verified. 56827 Dams are included and 43k+ have been automatically matched to articles by the tool. This should help build out the US dams at least, I'm looking for international resources to do the same. GNIS Dams USA Mix'n'match Wolfgang8741 says: If not you, then who? Hi. Your opinion at the above RFC is deeply valued. The RFC decides if Wikipedia would support data from Wikidata for use in infoboxes (Example - notice the infobox in edit mode). Thank you, Rehman 17:28, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Preferred unit of measure

What is the preferred unit of measure for water storage at the time of construction? There is a hodgepodge of units, including acre feet, m3, Tmcft, Tmc ft, TMC, tmc, cu mi, MCM, and on and on. What is the SI unit? I suspect it is m3. Rhadow (talk) 14:06, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

Megalitre (ML, 1000 m3) is good, in my opinion, since it is the closest SI unit to acre feet. Km3 also works for larger reservoirs. Using m3 tends to result in some unwieldy large numbers. Would appreciate if others can chime in as well. Shannon [ Talk ] 18:39, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
In case we get an audience, where to I find the standards defs for gross storage, dead storage, and the like? Do they correspond to infobox res_capacity_total, res_capacity_active, and res_capacity_inactive? Rhadow (talk) 19:44, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
  • |res_capacity_total= = maximum capacity
  • |res_capacity_inactive= = lowest level at which water can be released for power generation, irrigation, etc.
  • |res_capacity_active= = subtract inactive from maximum

As far as I know there's no "dead storage" parameter in the infobox.

The US Bureau of Reclamation has a nice glossary with more detailed definitions of these terms. Shannon [ Talk ] 22:47, 24 December 2018 (UTC)

I'm cool with accepting the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation definitions, if everyone else is. Rhadow (talk) 03:18, 25 December 2018 (UTC)

My 2 cents: As per Shannon, ML or km3 for large reservoirs, or m3 for smaller ones. Rehman 12:50, 22 February 2019 (UTC)

Hello. This is not directly related to this WikiProject, but I thought it would be best to get a wider audience on this. Please see this thread for discussions on a possible merger of the below three projects:

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Salmon Dam, world's third largest dam?

Hey, i just started an article on 1909-built Salmon Dam, in Idaho, USA, which apparently was the third-largest dam in the world at the time of its construction. I arrive in through working on articles about historic sites, including the Hollister School which was built to serve new population in the reclamation area of the project. I don't know why it had no article yet, and wonder if it was renamed and is covered in a different article already? Any insights and help developing the article would be appreciated! --Doncram (talk) 22:26, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Update: Seems like "Salmon Dam" was original name for what was renamed Salmon Falls Dam, and i have merged my small development of material into there. However there still is only a weak, very unrelated source about it being the third biggest dam in the world, and the article needs work! Hmm, it is not listed in List of largest dams, which may currently only cover current dams, but I think should have a historical section! --Doncram (talk) 22:54, 21 September 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Dams since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Interest in a Reservoir Task Force with WikiProject Lakes?

Since there is overlapping interest in reservoirs between the Dams and Lakes WikiProjects and some guideline documentation might there be some interest in combining documentation and practice started a conversation on the WikiProject Lakes Talk page.

P.S. Wikiproject Lakes needs infobox backlog has a number of reservoirs that could use an assist in identifying which infobox is most appropriate. Wolfgang8741 says: If not you, then who? (talk) 21:48, 10 June 2020 (UTC)

I noticed that a lot of reservoirs use {{Infobox dam}}. Is this correct or should they be using {{Infobox body of water}} instead? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:08, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
