Draft:U.S. policy toward authoritarian governments on hold

I've put the request for Draft:U.S. policy toward authoritarian governments on hold; the request is for an article in draft space, which we usually decline. I'm happy to wait a week or two for it to be returned to main space but suggest we decline if it lingers much longer than that. The requester @Ghazaalch: (courtesy ping) is concerned about its neutrality; my concern is that if the article isn't neutral, it may need significant rewriting before being sent back to main space, wiping out any copy-edit. Also, and with respect, content work like dealing with neutrality concerns goes beyond copy-editing. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 11:43, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Agree. All the best, Miniapolis 14:30, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
I've declined the request; this page is still in draft space and it has not been edited since the request was made. @Ghazaalch:, you're welcome to relist the page once it has been reviewed and accepted into article space. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:46, 31 January 2023 (UTC)

Removed request

I've removed the request for Frilled lizard here; the requester LittleJerry already has two requests listed on the page. Sorry I've only just noticed this while doing the annual report stats! No reply is needed right now, and I'll inform the requester on their talk. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:05, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

The reviewer of this GAN article has recommended that an experienced copyeditor take a look at the article to address some issues with the article.Gazozlu (talk) 14:39, 16 October 2022 (UTC)

I have done some small expansion and substantial copy editing to improve the article since posting here. I will refrain from touching the article from now to make it easier for someone else to take a look at it without the risk of me interrupting their edits. Gazozlu (talk) 20:53, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I've largely edited it now based on looking at other Feature Articles and made a significant change to the way the article is formatted. So from now the major edits will stop so that someone can take a look. It would be great if someone can take a look at the article, the GA nomination is still on hold. Gazozlu (talk) 16:25, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
The GAN is no longer on hold, but is also not undergoing large edits anymore. Gazozlu (talk) 21:25, 24 October 2022 (UTC)
The GAN is now a GA and is no longer undergoing frequent edits.--Gazozlu (talk) 18:51, 11 November 2022 (UTC)
@Raymond Kestis I'll withdraw this request as it is no-longer critical... to help with the huge the backlog of articles that are still awaiting copyediting. The article has already been deemed a Good Article. Can I just delete the entry or is there a procedure? Just tagging you Ray because you were a Guild Member active on here most recently. Gazozlu (talk) 16:04, 28 November 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Gazozlu:, to withdraw requests from this page, just type {{withdrawn}} and sign your post, and the bot will archive the request in around 24 hours. You don't have to withdraw the request simply because the article is now a GA; many GAs can be further improved with a copy-edit. It's up to you, really. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab
Hi Baffle☿gab, in that case I won't withdraw it right now.--Gazozlu (talk) 22:50, 28 November 2022 (UTC)

Aderonke Apata on hold

I was just about to c/e Aderonke Apata and to inform the requester QueenofBithynia but found their account has been blocked as a sockpuppet; see this SPI. I've put the request on hold and suggest we decline as usual. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:15, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Agree, Baffle, especially since the requests list is long. All the best, Miniapolis 23:56, 11 February 2023 (UTC)

Request for Yellow (Brymo album) removed

I've removed the request for Yellow (Brymo album) here because the requester already has two extant requests on the page. I've informed them on their talk here. No discussion needed. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:00, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

I've placed the request for Cataract surgery on hold because the article is still under development; see its history]. @Pbsouthwood: (courtesy ping), please let us know when you're finished with major development so a c/e can go ahead. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:58, 23 February 2023 (UTC)

I am basically doing minor tweaks and copy edits, and adding missing references. Sometimes when I search for a reference I find useful content, so I add it. Do I need to stop doing this while the article is copy edited? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:28, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
That's not necessary; feel free to continue as you wish. I've just put this request on hold while you're still developing the article. It's mainly to avoid edit conflicts and quick removal / reversion of copy-edits. Waiting times are long and the hold is only advisory; we can't stop anyone who wants to copy-edit the article from doing so. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 07:07, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
Cool. If the copy editor gives me a ping when they start I will stand back and leave them to it, or at least communicate before changing anything, like if an edit changes the meaning. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:30, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
Hold struck per your notice on the request. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 14:20, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

Request a different Copy Editor please

User Aqeccac (talk · contribs) had 3 prior edits before claiming to "copy edit" the article Ian Gibbons (biochemist). Their edits to the article were unconstructive and not helpful, and included removing citations. Request a different Copy Editor from the Guild of Copy Editors with more experience than 3 prior edits. Thank you, Princessa Unicorn (talk) 19:25, 18 March 2023 (UTC)

Except for removing one source, which looks like an honest mistake and easily rectified, Aqeccac's edits seem to have generally improved the article (which does seem a bit ... laudatory). Constructive criticism isn't ugly. Miniapolis 23:14, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
And if the issue is the {{POV}} tag, you can take it up with them on their talk page. Miniapolis 23:31, 18 March 2023 (UTC)
This request was archived on 5 March, when it became a GAN. The copyedit seems to have become problematic 13 days later, after Aqeccac tagged the page. Princessa Unicorn, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar; a new account isn't necessarily a new editor, and a new editor isn't necessarily an inexperienced copyeditor. All the best, Miniapolis 01:39, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I've gone over the article; Aqeccac's copy-edit was generally helpful (besides the source removal) and removed a fair amount of waffle. I've done a further copy-edit for GAN. Princessa Unicorn, please assume good faith; new editors may not be familiar with WP's processes and standards. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 11:00, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, both, your feedback is most appreciated. Princessa Unicorn (talk) 13:14, 19 March 2023 (UTC)
I removed the source as it was coming up as duplicated with the "1" citation mark twice. Aqeccac (talk) 13:02, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
That's okay, and very common; you'll see lower-case letters in a "References" section for more than one use of a citation. If you're not sure about something, please don't hesitate to ask! All the best, Miniapolis 13:46, 20 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the helpful explanation, Miniapolis, much appreciated! Best regards, Princessa Unicorn (talk) 16:02, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Two requests on hold

I've just put the requests for John F. Kennedy and Hatshepsut on hold; the requesting account Gingermead has recently been c/u blocked as a sockpuppet of AFreshStart. See also the up-page thread titled "Aderonke Apata on hold". The person behind these accounts has had enough AGF from me. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:15, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

I'll decline these requests after 24 hours unless there are any objections. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 15:49, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Declined both. Baffle☿gab 21:00, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Request for Maharashtra removed

I've removed the request for Maharashtra from the requests page because the requester @Rock Stone Gold Castle:; notified here, (courtesy ping) already has two other requests listed here. I've removed this request from the February section here because their most-recent request has already been accepted for c/e. Rock Stone Gold Castle, you're welcome to re-submit the removed request once one of your others has been dealt with. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:08, 29 March 2023 (UTC)

I've reverted another addition here; they seem to have misunderstood my message on their talk, so I've explained again. Am I writing clearly enough? Cheers, Baffle☿gab 15:20, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Your explanation is clear, but judging by their user page it may be a language thing. Thanks and all the best, Miniapolis 23:08, 30 March 2023 (UTC)

Copy-edits done in quick succession

I’m concerned about the speed and quality of copy-edits by The person who loves reading. This has all happened very quickly in the past few hours. They’ve quickly processed at least three articles requested by @Another Believer: (AB; courtesy ping), and another editor. There have been very few changes to Arleta Library Bakery & Cafe, Aviv (restaurant), and Wong King. @Jonesey95: (courtesy ping) has flagged an issue with their c/e to Fabrizio De André. I’ve converted The person who loves reading’s {{Done}} tags to {{Partly done}}, and there’s a few more that have already gone to the archive. AB’s requests were for GAN.

These requests having been marked {{Done}}, Another Believer has added further requests. I’m inclined to remove these while the other requests are dealt with… what do you think? I’ll put them on hold for now. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:22, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

GA is a crapshoot since only one reviewer is involved, so AB's GANs may still pass. However, we should clean up his current, partly-done requests before he lists more. I'm working on a fun article about a Spanish Standardbred, but will pitch in ASAP. All the best, Miniapolis 13:34, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

I forgot and began a requested Philippines copyedit, but I try to keep my promises and will do Aviv (restaurant). All the best, Miniapolis 13:53, 9 April 2023 (UTC)

I've given notice of this discussion to the editor at their talk page. From AB's talk, the articles involved are:
Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:04, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
As you can see from the editor's talk page, I had the same concerns, and with reason. I checked Holy Family Shrine, which needed significant work in comparison to its size, and all of the above articles in detail except for LGBT culture in Puerto Vallarta and Fabrizio De André. The latter requires a lot more work. You can see the changes that I made to the ones that I checked, and further review is welcome. – Jonesey95 (talk) 11:50, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
Since he is not a native English speaker (he has a {{Babel}} en-3 userbox on his UP), I advised him to work on backlog articles for now; however, that doesn't address the carelessness. AB is a regular on the requests page, and would be understandably dismayed if his GANs began failing after our ... er, help. All the best, Miniapolis 13:25, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
Thank you very much! I will be working on the backlog articles. Sorry for any inconvenience to the request page. The person who loves reading (talk) 16:00, 7 April 2023 (UTC)

() Thanks all for your comments above; I've given The person who loves reading some guidance on their talk page. I'll go through the list above and check or c/e them as needed, and I suggest we keep AB's requests on hold until the process is finished. Fortunately, these are mostly short articles so it shouldn't take very long to complete. Feel free to add any more articles above; I'll get to them eventually; unless anyone wants to pitch in. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:16, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

I've just finished Arleta Library Bakery & Cafe and have removed the on hold notices from AB's two remaining requests; I think we can put this behind us and move on. Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:26, 16 April 2023 (UTC)

Request removed

I've removed a request for Faris ibn Hatim ibn Mahawayh al-Qazvini here; the article has been moved to the draftspace and the requester already has two extant requests listed. This doesn't need a reply at the moment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 07:04, 28 April 2023 (UTC)

Windows 8 removed

I've removed the request for Windows 8 here; the requester already has two requests on the page. I've informed the requester on their talk here; no discussion is needed at the moment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 19:41, 2 May 2023 (UTC)

Is expanding existing material part of what I should do when fulfilling a request?

Hi! I'm new to copyediting here, and I'm not sure if I should wait to mark the article as done until I can add more information. The request I'm working on says:

"The page is about a major rapid transit project under construction in Patna, India. However, the page is very messy and lacks a lot of important information. Under some of the categories, there is a lot of redundant information as well. I would appreciate it if we can get the page cleaned up to make it look more professional for readers. Thank you."

Obviously I'm working to deal with redundant information, messiness and lack of encyclopedic tone, but I don't know if I should be adding 'important information' as well. Most of the sources aren't up to date, and there's a whole 'status updates' section I'm quite confused by. Aiue (talk) 16:26, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

@Aiue: You're more than welcome to add information if you like, but that falls outside the scope of copyediting. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:07, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
Hi @Aiue:, welcome to the Guild. As Tenryuu says, copy-editors aren't expected to deal with updates, citations or other content issues so please don't feel obliged to add information or updates to the article but do go ahead if you wish. If there's some text you don't understand, you can mark it with {{clarify|reason=Confusing text|date=May 2023}}, and if you feel the "Status updates" section need updating, you can add {{update|section|date=May 2023}} to the top of the section. Thanks for your work there. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:25, 21 May 2023 (UTC)

Thanks and question about short paragraphs

@Baffle gab1978 Thank you very much for doing Oil in Turkey - it is much more ready for GAN now.

Do you think we should further combine some short paragraphs? Chidgk1 (talk) 07:11, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

No worries, Chidgk1. I think the paragraphs are of a suitable length for the amount of text in the article, so I'd only merge them if they discuss or develop the same idea. I also think the lede could be expanded to four paras to more-fully summarize the article. Cheers and good luck with your planed GA nom. Baffle☿gab 22:00, 24 May 2023 (UTC)

@Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, and Zippybonzo: I'm currently copy editing this article. The copy edit request was solely for tone issues; I've fixed up some of the citations, but I think bringing the citations in line for consistency would be a massive undertaking. Given that the request is solely related to tone issues, is it okay if I just focus on that, and leave the cites for someone who wants to go for FAC? Thanks for your help. voorts (talk/contributions) 19:22, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

@Voorts, Of course! This is the Guild of Copy Editors, you don't have to fix all the problems in the article. Let me know if you need any other advice/assistance. Thanks! Zippybonzo | Talk (he|him) 19:25, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you for the quick response! voorts (talk/contributions) 19:26, 29 May 2023 (UTC)

Request removed and deja vu

Hi all, I've removed an excess request [here], and have informed the requester on their talk here. I also noticed one of the requester's extant requests is Sport in India, which we declined [here]. Sport in India still has the {{Cleanup}} template and unreferenced sections noted in the earlier discussion. Something's odd here, I think. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:12, 23 June 2023 (UTC)

Should Kurt Angle be placed on hold?

The GAR reviewer noted that [a]t over 15,000 words, the article contains many details of matches. The article is still at 13,000 words and there's been an {{overly detailed}} tag in the professional wrestling career section since June 2021. I think there should be a crack at cutting some of the FANCRUFT before this is copy edited. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:28, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Tangential point, but can any copy editor place something on hold, or only the coordinators? I wasn't sure which is why I didn't put the request on hold myself. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:32, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
IMO cutting fancruft is within the remit of a copy editor. You are welcome to do a partial copy edit (or none at all) and leave the rest for another editor. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:49, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Makes sense (and thanks for answering the question about placing something on hold). I don't think I'm knowledgeable enough about pro-wrestling to know which events are (un)important and what about those events needs to be summarized in the article, so I'm probably not the best person for the job. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:52, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Re the second question, we usually get consensus here before placing a request on hold. Sometimes a coordinator will summarily place a hold if a request meets conditions that have always gained consensus for a hold on this page, or if the requester asks for the hold. A note about the hold is typically placed on this page, regardless of whether the hold is placed before or after the notice. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:52, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! I'm also willing to take another look at the article and potentially copy edit if somebody else deals with the fancruft. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:54, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
Also, to note, I wasn't trying to be sarcastic about answering the second question; I saw your response in the edit summary. voorts (talk/contributions) 23:55, 2 June 2023 (UTC)
I copy edited the article and did not remove the fancruft, not remembering this post and thinking that my duty was to make the text there as intelligible as possible, only removing that which was blatantly redundant or irrelevant. There are editors here who would have done otherwise, though. I myself think that it's up to subject-matter editors to decide what should stay and what should be taken out, especially as they should be more aware of what constitutes appropriate detail in such articles. I'm here to make sure you know whose head Angle slammed with a steel chair, not whether such head slams constitute too much detail. Dhtwiki (talk) 23:27, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

The Eras Tour on hold

I've put the newly added c/e request for The Eras Tour on hold; @Jonesey95: (courtesy ping) has noted it is undergoing rapid development (history [2] here) so I think allowing it to stabilize before a full c/e would be useful. The tour is ongoing until August but it will likely be a while before a c/e is done anyway. Courtesy-pinging the requester @OfTheUsername:. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:04, 1 June 2023 (UTC)

Thank you-, I did put in the request a bit prematurely as I realize now, but the editing may slow down before the complete end of the tour; either way there will be some time before should probably be copyedited. OfTheUsername (talk) 03:46, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

() This article is still not really stable and is still under development; see its history. I suggest a decline for now, the article can be relisted when it settles down. Sorry for sticking my oar in here but I put this on hold over a month ago. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:19, 20 July 2023 (UTC)

John Jesnor Lindsay on hold

I've just placed John Jesnor Lindsay on hold; this is a probable BLP article that lacks citations and is tagged ad original research. The subject is an obscure British adult film-maker. I've removed a significant section of uncited BLP text but the remaining sourcing is weak, and only four sources are cited. Reducing it to a stub might be the best way forward but I don't really think a full c/e would be useful at this time. I've no prejudice against it being relisted once it's been reworked and properly cited per policy. Pinging the requester @Ktkvtsh: for comment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:26, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

Appreciate your work here @Baffle gab1978. I will inform the crew over at the WikiProject Pornography and we will get it sorted out from here. Couldn't have moved forward without your expertise. Ktkvtsh (talk) 06:33, 31 July 2023 (UTC)
No problem, @Ktkvtsh:, if you're happy to do so, you can withdraw the request by typing {{withdrawn}} below it and the bot will archive it in 24 hours or so. I'd prefer coordinator input before it's declined. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:18, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

() It's been over a week since I put this request on hold. I've dealt with the tone issue and removed the obvious waffle, POV and editorial text. Can a coordinator please either decline the request or strike / remove my hold notice? Thanks, Baffle☿gab 22:42, 8 August 2023 (UTC)

Deletion of "550 Madison Avenue" request

Entry and following discussion from Requests page

550 Madison Avenue

This page was promoted to Good Article status two years ago, but I'd like to nominate it for FAC. I would greatly appreciate a copyedit in case there were any issues I missed. Thanks in advance.Epicgenius (talk) 16:49, 12 August 2023 (UTC)

@Epicgenius and Voorts: Yes, it was recently copy edited, as requested on 2023-05-19 and completed on 2023-07-18, according to the archive. Hmm. Dhtwiki (talk) 23:00, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
My bad - I meant to request a copyedit of another article but accidentally copy pasted the wrong title. Please disregard this request. Epicgenius (talk) 23:02, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
Request withdrawn – Withdrawing per regular form. Dhtwiki (talk) 04:42, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

I've deleted this mistaken request, assuming that that's the appropriate course of action. Dhtwiki (talk) 23:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

It's more usual to place {{withdrawn}} (per requester here) and let the bot archive the request, but it's probably not that important here. I'd also have copied the discussion to this page but that's probably unnecessary too. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:53, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
It's important that I observe regular form. I've undone the deletion and placed the "withdrawn" tag, as well as putting the entry and following discussion within a collapsed box. Dhtwiki (talk) 04:50, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

My 2¢ on Discipline

@TrademarkedTarantula, (AFAIK) there are no officially agreed-upon guidelines for the use of LLMs/AI on Wikipedia. The general consensus so far (per WP:ChatGPT and WP:LLM) seems to favor allowing tools like ChatGPT for copy editing as long as the editor discloses the use of such a tool. @Moorlock was not saying that you used ChatGPT, but that they did. FYI, Moorlock, it is probably best that you refrain from your edits until Tarantula has completed their copy edit. It is much easier to copy edit an article that remains stable. Waiting for Tarantula to finish their work will prevent confusion and allow them to continue carrying out the request. Wracking talk! 18:46, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Sengol on hold

I've just placed the request for Sengol on hold. I was about to accept it but I checked it's history; there's a lot of very recent activity, some reverting and possibly an edit war going on here. I think we should wait until the article is stable. Courtesy-pinging the requester @Bookku: for comment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:43, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

@Baffle gab1978
Heritage Vs. modernity in itself an eternal human struggle at times gets politicized then polarized and spill over in opensource Wikipedia results in unfortunate edit wars, that said. The small section Design is likely to remain stable and I shall prefer that much is cross checked for copy edit requirement; For rest of the article, no issues in keeping on hold or even withdrawing for a year or so.
  • On side note:The present title Sengol is too generic, not in line with multiple WP policies, where as article scope is very specific. I am looking for suggestions on alternate article title since copy editors tend to have good knowledge of English language.
Thanks
Bookku (talk) 07:55, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
Bookku, I think the article should remain on hold until it stabilizes (within a reasonable time), and I don't see the point of copyediting a single section. Moving pages (which is what a title change entails) is beyond the scope of the GOCE, and I suggest that you begin a discussion on the article's talk page. All the best, Miniapolis 18:44, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

SD card copy-edit abandoned

I've abandoned my attempt to copy-edit the above article; i found myself doing more cleanup work, like removing text marked uncited in 2012 and 2016, and tagging more uncited text, than actual copy-editing. And this was only the first section. This kind of cleanup work should be done before a copy-edit is requested. Courtesy-pinging the requester @Waterard: for comment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:22, 25 September 2023 (UTC)

Battle of Pavan Khind content issues precluding copy edit?

Pinging the requestor, @SKAG123. The first section of the article has a valid no citations tag. The second section of the article, on the battle itself, has no date and limited details of how the battle went down. Additionally, two of the cites appear to be from unreliable sources, per a lengthy discussion on the talk page. The remainder of the sources cited in the article appear to be insufficient for an article on a historic battle. It seems like the content needs to be improved before a copy edit would be worthwhile. voorts (talk/contributions) 22:04, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks @Voorts:, I agree and I've put the request on hold for now, and I think we should decline it as unsuitable for c/e. I've done some cleanup there, removed the uncited section and I've cleaned up the text somewhat. I've not checked the sources but I noticed one is the IMDB, which is generally unreliable. Two requests on hold

I've just put the requests for Jim May (chemical engineer) and Alan Jackson (businessman) on hold and suggest we decline without prejudice. The notability of the subjects is questionable and the sourcing is poor, and most of the sources are behind paywalls. I don't believe these are suitable for copy-edit right now.

Courtesy-pinging the requester: hi @Timtrent:, the GOCE doesn't decide notability, or deal with sourcing or content issues. Copy-editing means fixing errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence flow, and dealing with other readability issues. If the subjects of the articles are not notable there's no point copy-editing them; neither is there any point copy-editing text that will be removed due to poor sourcing. The GOCE is not Cleanup or the Article Rescue Squadron. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:03, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

@Baffle gab1978 I understand completely. GOCE was a hope that good editors would notice these two articles in such a manner that I was not flying solo trying to combat the fluff, clutter, faux references and unmitigated tosh that permeate these articles, each of which somehow were kept at AfD and whose creating editor "almost [[WP:OWN]s but not quite. I'm grateful for the attention thus far.
I, Wikipedia, would still appreciate the help of editors outside the GOCE formal scheme in order to seek to achieve order out of memorial chaos. The creating editor has chosen to feel persecuted "by me" because I have tried hard to guide them. If impossible I note queries notability which might better be decided by a deletion discussion. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 05:37, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks @Timtrent: I appreciate the struggle against vanity articles but there must be zillions of these on this project. But we all have lives to lead and most of us are only here for the cabbages. The thing to do is to remove uncited text and text linked to unsuitable sources per WP:VERIFY and WP:BLP where appropriate, see if what remains represents significant coverage in reliable sources, then consider deletion if necessary. None of this is copy-editing. I think in this case the businessman may be notable, I'm not too sure about the chemist. Wikipedia policies are mandatory; the article creator can either follow WP policies, leave the project or get booted off it; perhaps they need a trip to the naughty step.
If you concede these two articles are not suitable for copy-edit, please add {{Withdrawn}} below the requests and sign, and they'll be archived in 24 hours. We'll be happy to see them again once they've been cleaned up. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:37, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
I shall do that to each request. I have come to find the creating editor to be disingenuous at best, both here and on Commons.
I'm working slowly through the mess! 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 20:52, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
@Baffle gab1978 I took the decision to send one of them to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jim May (chemical engineer). All opinions are welcome there. A source analysis informed my decision. It is now in the hands of the community. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 13:16, 1 October 2023 (UTC)

Excessive requests

I left a comment, but just to log it here: I noticed that SKAG123 has made excessive requests—the GOCE asks that requesters only have up to two open requests at any one time. SKAG123, I think the next steps would be to review the instructions for requesters and withdraw requests that do not align with those instructions.

I've put the quest for the above article on hold and suggest we decline it for now. Despite two attempts (thank you both!) to c/e it, this request has gone nowhere. @Omer123hussain:, this article still has {{Disputed}} at the top, as it did in December '22 when I processed your previous c/e request (which was not "partly done" btw; see my edit summary here). Factual inaccuracies should be dealt with before an FA nomination; don't expect the GOCE to fix them up. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:59, 16 September 2023 (UTC)
@Baffle gab1978: thanks for fixing those issues during GOCE,by "partly" I mean that during the GOCE review I could not answer to the issues.
  • Recently I had cleaned, cited and added text to make the article more clear and support the factuality.
  • My expectation from GOCE team is that, you point out the issues i will resolve those. because as an editor it is hard to find issues in our own work, so i came here to ask for the support from GOCE to point out the issues only.

Hi @Omer123hussain: I apologise for my tone above. Copy-editors are unlikely to check what you write is true and accurate; we just help out by fixing spelling, grammar, sentence order and flow—we probably wouldn't know if there are falsehoods in the article. Fact-checking is the onus of the editor who adds or restores the text, not the copy-editor. I notice you struggle with English; you may find there's a Wikipedia in your native language where you can write more fluently. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:37, 18 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi all; I've put the request for the above article on a fictional work on hold. The requester asks us to standardize divergent spellings of character names to a single version. This is content work, and I think conducting research to fix this issue isn't within the copy-editor's purview. Double Spacing

I am asking everybody else here to look for double spacing in the articles that you edit on. It’s a very difficult to notice issue, but many articles have them. I’ve gone through probably hundreds of articles today just removing double spacing. I’m typing this so other people will at least check to see. Roasted (talk) 18:09, 29 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Roastedbeanz1:, if you mean a double space following the end of a sentence, this is a permitted style that doesn't affect the way text is displayed. There is no urgent need to remove double spaces from articles and some editors frown upon purely cosmetic edits; please see WP:COSMETIC and WP:COSMETICBOT. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 22:22, 29 October 2023 (UTC)
Whitespace in the wikicode can sometimes make it easier to read in the editor (particularly with templates) and doesn't affect the rendered version of the page. – Reidgreg (talk) 05:57, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

Looking to nominate for FA (FAC). voorts (talk/contributions) 18:31, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

@Leoseliv: Taking a look now, but at initial glance, many of your edits look helpful. As a general note, when an editor requests a copy edit for a featured article nomination, usually editors who have some experience with FA will take on that request. Best, voorts (talk/contributions) 13:45, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
One general note. Per MOS:LQ, punctuation usually goes outside of the quotation mark. voorts (talk/contributions) 13:51, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Done looking through. I restored the sentence with the quote about how Williams calls herself "horrific at time management" and made some other fixes. Regarding losing friends, I changed it to "interacting with other people" to reflect the New Yorker review, which discusses being antisocial. voorts (talk/contributions) 14:01, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
    Pinging @Leoseliv. voorts (talk/contributions) 14:01, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, those two punctuation marks were my mistake. You're absolutely right. Note that the MOS also urges to use quotes sparingly (there are quite a few in the article), but I see you feel strongly about "horrific" :) Glad you found some of my edits helpful. I suppose I'll back off now and leave it to a more experienced editor as you suggested. Leoseliv (talk) 07:54, 6 November 2023 (UTC)
@Voorts: I've gone over the first part of this well-written article. I hope you're happy with my edits - mostly minor tweaks. A couple of things that go beyond just copy-editing, re Composition and themes. I've checked the references and couldn't find any mentions of losing friends as one of the themes. Can you please provide a reference? Also, in the last para in this section, I don't think Consequence / M. Siroky has to be cited there again (Citation 9b). Can you please take a look? I've put the request for the above article on hold per Dhtwiki's comments at that request; there's ongoing editing so it might be good to wait a short while before copy-editing this one. I'm also concerned this subject may become a powder keg for copy-editors but I guess that can be addressed if or when it happens. Courtesy-pinging requester @RadioactiveBoulevardier: for comment. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 21:31, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

I appreciate the courtesy ping.
It's an understandable decision. After all, there's not really a deadline.
In terms of the inherent controversies, can you elaborate what the potential concerns are? For instance, a fair percentage of my minor and CE edits are to articles that are quite controversial outside the Anglosphere, such as India/Pakistan and Russia/Ukraine. I think it’s important that WP’s coverage of controversial articles be as readable and professional-looking as possible. If an editor abuses a semicolon, what they wrote might lose an iota of credibility with readers. (This is a fascinating topic as by writing professional-grade content the shift from "wiki" to "pedia" makes use of the authoritativeness professionally written content often has in the mind of the average person, but I digress…)
Dhtwiki pointed out that I haven't yet made any substantive edits. This is largely because I avoid the topic area. I’m currently home sick so I could definitely find a block of time to do a full pass for basic stuff like punctuation later in the day. RadioactiveBoulevardier (talk) 21:53, 13 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I can understand your reasons for not engaging with the article. The on hold notice is merely advisory and doesn't prevent anyone from taking the request is they wish to. My concern is, due to the subject matter, copy-editors could become embroiled in edit wars, revert wars or other dramah, making it at best a waste of their time and effort. I'm not saying all editing has to stop before a c/e can take place but the article should be stable, otherwise a copy-edit can be quickly wiped out. I agree an article of this importance should be as clear, concise and readable as possible. I'm not unduly concerned about your lack of edits there (we only usually decline requests from anon editors who haven't edited the requested article), though it's always nice to see requesters taking articles forward to GAN, FAC etc. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:59, 14 November 2023 (UTC)
@RadioactiveBoulevardier:, I've struck my hold notice on this request; as of my timestamp, there have been no edits there since 25 November. Please let us know if more problematic editing occurs before or during a c/e. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:03, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

An IP editor has pointed out there has been recent edit-warring and an ongoing dispute over the existence of this article. I suggest we give it a couple of weeks to settle down and for the dispute to be resolved. Courtesy-pinging the requester @WeatherWriter: for comment once their block expires. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:18, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

@Baffle gab1978: I am ok with the hold. The edit war over article existence was solved with a third-opinion request and both myself and the other editor ended the dispute. I would still like to have a copy/edit for a future BCR or GAN, but if you would prefer to have me re-request it in a few weeks, I could also do that. The Weather Event Writer (Talk Page) 00:20, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi WeatherWriter, thanks for your reply. There's no need to re-request (unless you want to), my concern is that an edit war, reverting or ongoing article development may lead to edit conflicts with a copy-editor and possibly negate the c/e. I'll check the article's history later this week and see where we are. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:34, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Vincenzo Zitello on hold

I've put the c/e request for Vincenzo Zitello on hold and suggest we decline for now. The article is an unreferenced BLP about a notable Italian musician (see the authority control panel there). It should probably be reduced to a stub. I've templated it as a UBLP and for other woes (there's a COI involved). Courtesy-pinging the requester @4meter4:. Hi @Remsense:, do you still intend to copy-edit this article? Cheers, Baffle☿gab 07:09, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Baffle gab1978, oh, I am so sorry! At the beginning of the month I had meant to get back to it, but the article went through a bit of a contentious period/small edit war during the time, so I decided to wait, and then I completely forgot. I hope it's not a problem if I accidentally sat on this article all month. I can formally relinquish it now, if that's alright? Remsense 11:08, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply; no problem, these things happen. Thanks for your work there. The article seems to have settled down now, so the request can be taken by another editor, though maybe check the history in case the EW kicks off again. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 18:43, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

DYK nom on hold. The article is well structured with citations wherever necessary along with images. Just not good because of grammatical errors and phrase errors. I'm not good with copyedit. Going to nominate for GA/FA (GAN / FAC). Drat8sub (talk) 17:43, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

@Leoneix:, the GOCE tag has been removed by bot. Is it okay? And I want to have little conversation regarding few points which otherwise might affect the whole article. So, is your talk page a better place or the article talk page? Drat8sub (talk) 14:50, 13 November 2023 (UTC)

This article is about a set of paintings and subsequent variations/derivations by Andy Warhol. This is a seminal piece of art. It is one of 17 paintings listed at vital articles level 4 and one of 10 contemporary art paintings listed at vital articles level 5. This was listed at WP:FA from March 26, 2007 to March 7, 2021. It is now a WP:FFA. It just failed at WP:FAC and I was encouraged to nominate it for WP:PR and WP:GOCE. I was the original page creator and GA and FA nominator. I finally have the time and motivation to restore its FA (FAC). I have vigorously expanded the content. I have an outstanding request at WP:MCQ after which I hope to submit this at WP:PR. Recent discussions that are relevant are the Wikipedia:Featured article review/Campbell's Soup Cans/archive1 from March 25, 2021 and Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Campbell's Soup Cans/archive2 from today. • Also, in paragraph 3 of the WP:LEAD should it be a comma or semi colon after 1960s?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:58, 14 December 2023 (UTC)
      • @TonyTheTiger: The semi-colon is more appropriate; I've made the change. Of your edits in general, the only one I was surprised by, and would contest, is insisting on using the phrase "social colleagues". What are those, if not employees? Fellow artists? Friends? I think that a better term, or a definition of s.c. in the article, is needed. I've completed the first pass, but I think there's still more to do. It may take me to the end of the week to finish up. Dhtwiki (talk) 09:04, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
A good term would be friends (Latow and Carey) then. I will also add another source with an alternate version of the story too. Give me a few days.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:30, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
        • I have revisited this. Carey was an employee, Mann was Carey's boyfriend and Latow was an acquaintance, who he paid $50 for an idea. Feel free to change the referrent as you see fit with this in mind.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:22, 15 December 2023 (UTC)
          • I only just saw this after Baffle copied the discussion over here and have changed the article accordingly, calling Latow an "artistic acquaintance" and that other "artists" influenced the theme. Dhtwiki (talk) 10:10, 21 December 2023 (UTC)
