In regards to the article "Coolie"

Hi, I was advised by an editor to bring this to the Discrimination Page and Human Rights Page.... I have a serious concern about the article "coolie". This article was written with a tremendous amount of inaccurate information and perhaps there might be even an agenda involved and this article must be corrected because the information is false and and misleading to the public.

First of all the Category must be changed from Slavery to Indentured Worker. Second the etymology for coolie is hired laborer or wages. And kuli in turkish means hireling. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/coolies I am from these islands and the original article so falsely misrepresents coolies. Many people of Indian and Chinese background took exception to this article because they knew that a lot of the subject matter in the article was false.

80% of the immigrants who came to the Chesapeake Bay colonies were white, European indentured laborers. Indentured laborers were: White Europeans, Chinese, Indians, and other Asian ethnic groups and they were not slaves. "Coolie" needs to be listed under a category called Indentured Worker or it should not be in a category at all. Coolie should simply not be listed under the category of Slavery because that is very false and is misleading to the public. How do I remove "coolie" from the category Slavery or get a new category created entitled Indentured Laborer? https://sites.google.com/site/rydenonushistory/home/directory-study-guides/southern-english-colonies

Also the etymology of coolie is "hired laborer" or an "unskilled Asian Laborer" or wage. There are several other etymology used in the present article that is not relevant and they must be removed. Coolies were given wages, land, and houses for their labor. Generally speaking people today are not even given this. I know this for a fact because I am from these island and the people there were indeed paid. This resulted in a lot of jealousy and anger from African slaves towards coolies and perhaps rightfully so. Indian coolies were paid about $45 dollars a day plus food and clothing.

Leaflet For Wikiproject Human Rights At Wikimania 2014 (updated versions)

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

Pictures of racist signs in sundown towns

Can anyone find pictures of racist signs that used to be in "sundown towns" like Vidor, Texas? Children's rights project

There doesn't appear to be a WikiProject addressing children's rights directly. Can anyone point me to a discussion of the pros and cons of having a separate project for this topic? Hipersons (talk) 14:15, 19 September 2014 (UTC)

Hipersons You could read both the project page and discussion archives of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council to learn about making WikiProjects, but I can help you make a decision here. The pros of setting up a WikiProject are having a private community space to talk and more importantly, having easier access to automated tools to help a community manage a large number of articles. If you personally know at least 5 really dedicated volunteers who are familiar with 50+ articles in a field collectively then that might be a reason to start a WikiProject. Cons of starting a WikiProject are that it immediately isolates a community from existing communities at similar WikiProjects, because when a WikiProject starts that means that discussions there will not happen elsewhere. For someone not familiar with WikiProject setup and tools it takes 10-15 hours to setup automated tools to get benefits people usually want.
All this said, Wikipedia is consistently one of the most consulted sources of information on most topics and is the most consulted source of information on many topics. I am here to share health content. If you want to see how WikiProjects work, consider taking on a single issue at the intersection of children's rights and health and bring your ideas to WikiProject Medicine, where you will find as active of a community as you can expect on Wikipedia. Expanding and reorganizing Social cleansing

Hello! I am a student at Rice University completing coursework for my Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities minor. I hope to majorly expand and reorganize the existing page on social cleansing.

I have found that the description of the issue is extremely limited, as the article is a stub rated start-class by 6 different WikiProjects. I would like to expand the introduction and definition to more comprehensively cover the issue as it has been explained by scholars and also provide a brief history on the development of the term and the phenomenon. I would additionally like to completely reorganize the article by continent instead of country, as I see a lot of similarities in social cleansing in the countries already discussed. I intend to provide scholarly sources from journals and reports from human rights commissions.

Though this article is rated mid-importance within WikiProject Human rights, it is very limited in information. I am greatly looking forward to expanding its scope. Since the talk page on this article has been minimal since 2009, I would really appreciate feedback and suggestions as I plan to edit this page. Rgalts (talk) 06:57, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Revisions to Child labour in Bangladesh article

I am planning on editing and restructuring the current Child labour in Bangladesh article. It belongs in the scope of WikiProject Human rights but has yet to receive a quality or importance rating. I hope that my edits will bring up both the quality and importance of this article. It is currently lacking in depth of content and scholarly sources. I plan to increase coverage of this topic by adding material through citing reputable resources such as published books and papers, articles from academic journals, and government statistics.

I plan on adding a "Definitions" section and a "Initiatives against Child Labor" section to provide a more comprehensive and holistic coverage of the topic. I also plan on restructuring the existing "Prevalence and Impact" section by splitting it into two sections: "Causes" and "Prevalence and Impact". The causes section will focus on main causes of child labor while the prevalence and impact section will focus on different industries using child labor in Bangladesh.

If anyone is interested in the exploitation of child labor in Bangladesh as a human rights issue, I would appreciate any and all feedback or comments on the best ways to improve this article. Revising Human Trafficking in China Wiki Article

I am a student from Rice University in Houston, TX, and I am looking forward to extensively editing the page on Human trafficking in the People's Republic of China as part of a Wikipedia project for my Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities class. I would like to revise the current page and bring it to a “Good Rating” by adding new information, restructuring the article, and condensing current information. The page lacks adequate references and derives most of its information from a single source. The banner of the page lists multiple issues such as compromised neutrality, lack of links to other articles, and reliance upon a single source. I would like to condense the information on the current page and add new sections/topics that help to create a more cohesive and encyclopedic entry on human trafficking in China.

I would appreciate any input in deleting and restructuring information on the page, especially since this is an article that is listed as biased. I would like any advice on approaching the topic of editing this page and would be more than welcome to any feedback since this is my first time working with Wikipedia. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns before I start my project and edit the page.

I am a student at Rice University and I am currently planning on creating a new article on Sexual Violence in Finland. I think it is a subject that would fall within the WikiProject Human Rights, especially since similar articles such as Sexual Violence in South Africa and Sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo are both apart of this WikiProject. Sexual violence is also obviously an important subject that clearly violates human rights. Addition of a Migrant Education page

I am a student at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and as part of a school project, I am planning to add a Wikipedia page on migrant education. I believe this article fits under the Human Rights WikiProject because education is a human right and critical component to mitigating inequalities in society. I propose writing this article because the often-temporary nature of migrant labor has serious consequences on educational attainment and success. In this article I will discuss the current issues that migrant workers and their families face achieving educational success, the related government policies surrounding migrant education, and the current ideas of how to move forward and improve it. I will mainly focus on the United States, but will also add a section that touches on migrant education in different countries. In the section “current issues,” I will discuss the general problems migrants face in education (such as language barriers, poverty, etc.). After this section, I will talk about the history of migrant education in the US, focusing on the 20th century and leading up to the modern day. After briefly explaining the historical trends of migration within the United States, I will address the different problems and solutions that have been tried through the past decades. After laying out this history of migrant education within the United States, I will go into detail on current and related policies and regulations in other regions of the world. Finally, I would like to discuss the different opinions on how to improve the availability and success of migrant families’ educational experiences. I will approach this from two angles by first discussing ideas for policy changes and governmental action and then by discussing the involvement of NGOs and other non-profit organizations.

Sources: I plan to use scholarly articles from Journals such as the International Journal of Educational Development and the Journal of Latinos and Education. I will also draw on publications such as Scholars in the Field: The Challenges of Migrant Education, and Migrant education: thirty years of success, but challenges remain.

Addition of a Homelessness among LGBT Youth in the United States article

Hello! My name is Magen, and as an educational project for an upper-level course at Rice University, I am planning to create a new article titled "Homelessness among LGBT Youth in the United States." I also plan to provide a very brief summary of this topic on the "Homelessness in the United States" page that links to this new article. The new article will draw upon scholarly research (e.g. The American Journal of Public Health, University of Brighton, The Journal of Law in Society, Journal of Gay and Lesbian Mental Health, etc.) as well as task force project papers (e.g. from the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Policy Institute and the California Homeless Youth Project) to thoroughly detail the overrepresentation of LGBT individuals among homeless youth in the United States, proposed explanations for this imbalance, nonprofits, activists and federal policies/projects related this issue, as well as the plethora of research on how certain factors like substance abuse, access to shelters, violence, etc. affect homeless LGBT youth differently than their heterosexual counterparts. I believe it is very important to create this page as soon as possible because although it is a highly prevalent issue violating the human rights of LGBT individuals, I currently cannot find any information on Wikipedia related to this topic. Especially since this is my first contribution to Wikipedia, I would welcome any advice, ideas, expertise or suggestions. Thank you so much! I look forward to working on this project. Discussion with all class participants

Hello Aaie21 and Dwang41. Are you two in a class together? Thanks for looking at these concepts. Here is some general advice:
  • It is usually not best to plan what you are going to do with a Wikipedia article. Unlike probably every essay you have written for class, when doing pure research as for Wikipedia, you can only write about what you find in published sources. You might be surprised to find that published sources do not cover what you expect. My recommendation is to jump into the literature without many expectations and find some papers that you feel are well-written and interesting, even if you did not expect them. Plan to write based on your source, rather than planning to find a source based on what you think you will write.
  • Among sources, overarching reviews of other research are the most reliable sources of information.
  • Post something to Wikipedia ASAP instead of polishing your work and posting at the end. It is entirely fine to add interesting sentences one at a time. You cannot harm Wikipedia.
  • To minimize confusion and maximize clarity, put a citation after every sentence you post. All information on Wikipedia should be verifiable. Using so many citations is not required if sources are clear, but for new editors it is easy and doing this is never wrong.

AAla-Seppälä CamilaKennedy Magenstat Thanks for posting, guys. I have the same suggestions for you that I have for your peers. In literature of research, you are restrained in what you can write because you are restricted from persuading your readers of anything which you fail to find in the literature. When planning what you want to do on Wikipedia, share a source that you have already found and say, "This source is about XXX, and I plan to summarize its findings." If you have preconceived expectations, you may be tempted to use low-quality sources to prove yourself correct. Amnesty Partnership

Hello Wikiproject:Human Rights,

I'm talking to Amnesty International about a possible partnership where we train Amnesty supporters to become editors on human rights topics. This might be a good way to improve timeliness of human rights coverage, especially in minority languages. Does this project have opinions on Amnesty as a source of human rights research, or any other objections to such a partnership? Obviously we'll start small and not just throw a load of newbies into it without guidance.

Hey awesome! I think the way this would work is based around when they release their reports - we get their volunteers to try and cite the report wherever it is relevant. While some of the reports are quite niche and might only be relevant to one article, some of these have a lot of detail and cover a wide range of topics, so could be relevant to many articles, especially their annual report, which is a general update on human rights worldwide. They are making good progress internally towards being able to share their archive under open licences which is excellent. What would be great is if anyone interested in supporting the project can help us come up with a wish list of articles for improvement. Hi Ed, I was extremely excited to see this note. I'm basically retired as an editor now, but the partnership you propose was long a dream of mine. I actually sent about a dozen e-mails to different Amnesty folks in the past trying to start something similar and could never get a response--I'm glad to hear you were able to get through.
I probably wrote about 100-150 articles on Amnesty prisoners of conscience during my time as an editor, and would be glad to help train others to do the same. (In the spirit of your proposal, I just put up a new one at U Sein Than to show you my usual format.)

Wish list for improvement - Amnesty, human rights, and getting UN uploads for all language versions of the s:Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Wikisource so that we can use that document as an example among any languages of how interlanguage links work. Stevie, in addition to Blue's suggestions, Wikipedia:WikiProject Human rights/Popular pages could also give volunteers a sense of the project's high-demand articles. Many of those are historical, but some like Guantanamo Bay detention camp or Pussy Riot would seem right up the alley of Amnesty volunteers (assuming they get proper tutoring in neutrality, etc.). Restructuring a major article might not be the place to start new editors, but it'd be terrific if they wanted to take one of these on once they've got a little experience. The top articles on that list get hundreds of thousands of views a year and it'd be great to provide better information.
Amnesty volunteers would also be well-equipped to work on Human Rights in Country X articles (like Human rights in post-invasion Iraq), though these are also complex to write and don't get nearly as much traffic.
Volunteers looking for something simpler could just create stubs or add simple factual updates on individual cases (prisoners of conscience, human rights violators, etc.). These articles are usually out of date despite topping the search engines on their topic. It'd be a huge help! -- Khazar2 (talk) 03:07, 28 September 2014 (UTC)

As soon as possible in the conversation, ask them to donate one copyrighted media file which they own to Wikimedia Commons. This can be anything. If they can navigate their way through that discussion, then that means they have talked enough about Wikipedia to understand the concept of free content and the nature of the Internet. If they halt at this, then it will be the first of many barriers. Getting more content is not a priority, because if they can donate one file, editathons and the rest will go a lot more smoothly. I agree with Blue that donating media files would be the #1 thing they could do (and the most logical place to start). It would be terrific to illustrate articles on people like Filep Karma that Amnesty has designated high priority cases, and the organization also often has pictures of protests, police attacks, their award winners, etc. on its website. I realize they don't own all of these images, but they surely at least own some, and in other cases, could speak to those who do. Putting these on the Commons would be a win for them (these stories are much more sympathetic with pictures) and a win for us.
If they're interested in helping with content-writing, we could match a few volunteers on Amnesty's end with experienced editors and each work through a relevant article together--either creating a new one or editing/updating an existing one. I'd be glad to do this, and Crisco 1492 said he might help, too. Once they've seen the basic policies in practice, Amnesty volunteers can decide where they want to go from there (editathons, a Wikipedian-in-residence, assigning different articles to different local groups to create or update?). They might also consider naming one of their people as a liaison who could have a wiki-presence and coordinate their volunteers, as well as field questions, requests, or complaints from the community. -- Khazar2 (talk) 02:08, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Stevie, here's two concrete examples of the kind of low-level content Amnesty volunteers could really help with. Amnesty's sent out at least two actions on Iranian death row prisoner Reyhaneh Jabbari; our current article on her is ungrammatical and difficult to read (probably by an ESL author), and has few citations despite the recent press interest (CNN, BBC, etc.). Another Amnesty action was on the murder of Honduras campesino activist Margarita Murillo, which appears to have dozens or even hundreds of reliable sources about it (many in Spanish, but some in English), but on whom we still don't have an article. Amnesty volunteers could write basic articles like these without much effort, and it'd be a win for both Amnesty and Wikipedia to have this information out there. -- Khazar2 (talk) 15:12, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

This article from the Observer points out that it will be the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta next year (15 June 2015) and suggests there will be various TV and radio programmes (and books etc) to coincide with the significant date. I note this article regularly gets 150,000+ page views per month and this is likely to increase. Rodw I would wish you good luck if you did. I agree with you that this is a very popular article and that its popularity is likely to increase a lot. This might be high-profile enough that Wikimedia UK would like to help. It would not hurt to ask them. On English Wikipedia, I cannot think of any particular place where you could easily coordinate collaborators for a project like this, but if you ask around you may find support. It sounds like a good idea to me and I expect the idea would appeal to many people who hear it. I regret that I am unable to offer much support other than encouragement. Editing and revising an article on Human trafficking in Finland

Hello WikiProjet: Human Rights! My name is Anniina and I am currently an undergraduate at Rice University. I am in a Poverty, Justice and Human Capabilities class, and for an assignment for that class I am going to start revising and expanding the article on Human trafficking in Finland. I am planning on building a whole new structure of sections and subsections, redistributing the already existing information into these new sections as well as adding new information. I planning on having a section for the victims and the help the victims receive. I would like to include a more comprehensive section on the prevention of human trafficking in Finland; what kinds of organizations there are, how the public health sector contributes and what challenges there are for the preventing work that takes place. I will also find more sources and work on improving the citations of the existing article. In addition, I want to talk about the specific laws in Finland that deal with human trafficking. Does anyone have an opinion on whether I should link the section to the Finnish law article, even though the article is basically nonexistent? My goal is to improve the article on Human Trafficking in Finland as much as I possibly can, and therefore I would gladly welcome any tips, ideas or advice anyone might have. Thank you! Adding information to Human rights in Nepal page

Hi everyone! My name is Saira and I am also an undergraduate student at Rice University. I am editing the Human rights in Nepal article for a school project; it is currently stub class, and I'd like to raise it to at least B-class. Right now the article only exists as an introduction (with a lot of uncited information) and a section on gender equality. I am planning to add sections on poverty, education, health, and torture human rights issues in an effort to increase balance and scope of the article, as well as a section on the history of the 1996-2006 conflict that has so affected the human rights situation in Nepal. I'm using sources from researchers such as Singh, Parker, Upreti, and more. If anyone has any suggestions for another important section to add, I'd love your thoughts.

Consciousness-Raising Repository - Call for Feedback and Participation

This is a call for those interested in developing a resource on Wikipedia for collecting and publicizing stories from people who experience marginalization in the Wikipedia community. This is part of the Ideal Lab's Inspire grants. The purpose of the Consciousness-Raising Repository is to serve as a database of knowledge about the forms marginalization can take and as an outlet for users experiencing marginalization. Right now, we're putting together a diverse group of Wikipedians to oversee the construction of the repository and recruitment and collection of stories.

Balochistan

Hi all, could use some experienced eyes at Balochistan, Pakistan. I've added some content, but Human Rights editing isn't quite my bailiwick and I'm not familiar with what sources are decent, etc. or how the content should reasonably be presented in articles. My edit was basically just an expansion of this edit, but there seems to be some resistance to whether or not the alleged human rights issues belongs in the article at all, and if so, what level of that coverage would be appropriate. There was some edit warring today as well, where an IP kept removing similar content and another IP kept reinstating it. There is already a much detailed article, at Human rights violations in Balochistan and my interest is in presenting something neutral and brief, unless y'all think it should be expanded or trimmed. Again, I'm mostly a gnome, so I don't have much familiarity in this world. Anyhow, thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:48, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Addendum: There's still a general dispute about whether or not any content about the alleged human rights issues in Balochistan should be included at Balochistan, Pakistan and Balochistan. This has yielded an RfC at Talk:Balochistan,_Pakistan#comment_requested and Talk:Balochistan#Comments_requested. Anyone familiar with the Balochistan issue or even history articles in general should consider weighing in, as this appears to be a case where one IP is going up against a bunch of like-minded editors, and I'm not sure all perspectives are being adequately considered here. Help an article?

Hey, I'm going to post this on multiple WikiProjects so there will be some cut/paste - my apologies for that. I was recently going through the articles at Category:Proposed deletion and came across Effects of genocide on youth. The article was written by AMWilkinson, who created the article as an assignment for Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Drake University/Global Youth Studies (Fall 2015). It's currently up for PROD as WP:OR, but I do think that there's merit in covering this specific part of the topic. Now whether or not it could merit an article outside of the main topic is a good question.

A quick, offhand look at the page does show that it's written like a student paper, which is a frequent issue with student assignments but not one that can't be overcome. I need someone to help salvage the article, which will likely require some searching for sources. I tried doing some very quick and dirty searching but it wasn't exactly easy, since a lot comes up with a general search without limiting anything, even when I search an academic database like JSTOR. This will likely be a massive undertaking.

I can help out some, but it really won't be until after my school is done for the quarter, which won't be for another week at least, and this needs some urgent help.
