WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:27, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Portal:Iowa

There is a push to create wp:portals for all states. For now I have made Portal:Iowa a redirect to the Outline of Iowa as a stopgap. There are already a lot of pages funneled through this redirect. Anyone willing to make a proper Iowa Portal? Thanks, Bill Whittaker (talk) 16:09, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

If any spare time shows up for me (unlikely, but I can dream, right?) I'll start working on one. I'd suggest Davenport, Iowa (A-Class) for our first selected article, with Iowa (main topic) and USS Iowa (BB-61) (FA-Class) as the next selected articles.
We seem to have quite a few good images - possible images include File:Americangothic.jpg (Iowa ties), File:Fountain of Four Seasons.jpg (ISU), File:ISU campanile.jpg (ISU), File:Old capital iowa city.jpg (Old Capitol/U of I), File:Iowa capitol.jpg (Capitol), File:Flag of Iowa.svg (Flag), File:Iowa and Nebraska lands10.jpg (Iowa land poster), File:Iowa.JPG (Welcome to Iowa sign), File:Iowa.JPG (Iowa seal w/ motto), File:Iowa quarter, reverse side, 2004.png (Iowa quarter). Am I missing any obvious articles or pictures?--Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:20, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
...and don't forget one of Iowa's icons - the Iowa butter cow (File:Butter Cow.jpg)! Unfortunately this head-on image has too much glare to automatically put it in my list above (with apologies to the photographer). --Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:28, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
Phil- Sounds like a good plan. Thanks! Bill Whittaker (talk) 14:15, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
I concur. CTJF83 chat 19:01, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Iowa Portal

It has been proposed that the Portal:Iowa seen on hundreds of pages be turned into a dead-end red link, rather than a redirect to the Outline of Iowa. I'm scratchin' my head over this one- why anyone thinks this would improve Wikipedia is beyond me. Follow the link at Portal:Iowa for more info. Bill Whittaker (talk) 20:10, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

FYI, {{Iowa portal}} has been nominated for deletion; the portal itself does not exist. 70.29.210.155 (talk) 05:02, 24 May 2010 (UTC)
The portal now exists, and the portal template has now been replaced by {{portal|Iowa}}. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:49, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

I would appreciate help on improviding the article on the statistician Robert V. Hogg of the University of Iowa. Apparently, the article has been nominated for Did you know-status. In particular, it would be good for an Iowa-savvy editor to contact the public-relations office of the University of Iowa and obtain a picture of Professor Hogg. Thanks. Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 04:29, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I'm on it. Bill Whittaker (talk) 13:42, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Now I know how Jules felt when Marcellus Wallace dispatched Winston Wolf! :) Thanks, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 16:27, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Hope Wolf had better luck than I did. Photo services says the web images of Hogg are not theirs (this is fine, since they charge money), but I have not had any luck getting the Stats department to repond to my request. If anyone gets back to me I'll let you know. Bill Whittaker (talk) 16:46, 18 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for trying. BTW: It appears that the the article has passed at least the first vetting of the Did you know? process. 19:11, 23 May 2010 (UTC)~
The hook about ASA President "Boss Hogg" has been queued to DYK. Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 21:13, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
According to the webpage on Wikipedia article traffic statistics, roughly 1,300 persons followed the DYK lead to the Robert V. Hogg article on 24 May 2010. (FYI) Thanks, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 18:56, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

Oscar Kempthorne of Iowa State University

Another statistician, Professor Oscar Kempthorne (deceased) of Iowa State University, also needs a picture. His article could use expansion also. Thanks, Kiefer.Wolfowitz (talk) 04:29, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

This page has been initiated - any help in filling in missing federal courthouses, or providing missing information on listed courthouses (especially pictures) would be appreciated. Cheers! bd2412 T 15:04, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

A History of Iowa

I note Wikisource has :

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/History_of_Iowa_From_the_Earliest_Times_to_the_Beginning_of_the_Twentieth_Century

Anyone able to consider writing further volumes to cover the 20 the century?

A very rough outline would be something like this in terms of periods..

- 1900-1910
- 1910-1920
- 20's boom followed by crash
- Depression era..
- Rossevelt's Reforms...
- World War II
- Post War Recovery
- Red Scares and Atom fears
- 60's
- 70's
- Regan Era
- Clinton Era...

I'd appreciate someone knowing more about this expanding the outline for possible use as a basis page for efforts on Wikibooks :) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:13, 3 September 2010 (UTC)

Iowa articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Iowa articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of November, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Followup

Many thanks for this feedback. Glancing at the list, they all looked to be excellent suggestions and I had expected to include all or nearly all of them. However, I found that most of them are only Start-Class, and they get surprisingly (to me) little traffic. It may be that the low traffic is somewhat related to the lack of content; I can't see any other reason what an article like Iowa Territory would only get 35 hits per day (For comparison Indian Territory, albeit also weak, gets 259 hits/day). We did include Chet Culver, Terry Branstad and Iowa State University. I'd like to request that you improve the others on the proposal list (Iowa General Assembly, Robert Lucas (governor) and Iowa Territory) up to B-Class in time for our first major release (Version 1.0) early next year. Would that be possible? Thanks again, Walkerma (talk) 16:38, 30 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 20:49, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

A consideration for cross project consolidation of talk page templates

I have started a conversation here about the possibility of combining some of the United States related WikiProject Banners into {{WikiProject United States}}. If you have any comments, questions or suggestions please take a moment and let me know. --Kumioko (talk) 19:49, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
