Okay, looks like we have our majority support. Barring any last-minute changes, I think we can go ahead and award them with the following citation:

A strong begining, not a coordinator so I can't leave a mention in the main body of discussion. Since this is the first Nommination there may be a few faux-pas, such as this one. Although unwriten in the main page (article) is the proposed statement Editors are welcome to comment on nominations in progress, but are requested not to make personal attacks or unneccessarily negative remarks. applicable?--Dryzen 20:15, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

I would think that was pretty implicit; should that be made more explicit in the award description itself? (I'm somewhat concerned that such wording would be interpreted as overly elitist; after all, are there any cases where editors aren't welcome to comment?) Kirill Lokshin 21:01, 29 March 2007 (UTC)
I know there arn't any cases where editors aren't welcomed to comment but not all editors know that. Some may think that his is a Coordinators only section as only the coordinators are explicitly named in the Award scope. Akin to Coordinators' page open to the public but most editors thinking it off limits.

I think Wandalstouring means that coordinators shouldn't be eligible for the award as long as they're in office. (Which is, admittedly, a good point; it'd slightly resemble Brezhnev's habit of awarding himself medals. ;-) Kirill Lokshin 17:28, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Meh. Since you can't self-nominate, I don't think it's problematic, as long as you don't vote in your own favor. And, as one can theoretically remain in office indefinitely, it seems a little odd to deny the award to someone who has demonstrated both dedication to the project and the support of the members. From the last election processes looks like Kirill Lokshin's going to have to wait a long time before get his deserved award. The same for a portion assistant-coordinators. There is a reason why they hold office. :oP --Dryzen

During the next election do you think for a second between stepping down from office as Lead Coordinator and taking the title up again we can post the Award? I understand your point Wandalstouring, but would of still liked to have given the Award regardless of tenure of position. SandyGeorgia

Although not technically a part of our project, I would like to nominate SandyGeorgia (talk · contribs) for the chevrons; Sandy has been instramental in the FA process as a whole by checking FAC articles for our project (and others as well) to ensure that citation are correctly configured, and by helping clear the backlog of FA-class articles that no longer meet FA criteria from our project (and others as well). I dare say that most articles listed under the FA-class showcase wouldn't be there if Sandy hadn't chipped in her two cents. As noted above, she is not technically a part of the project, but has been award the project Chevrons for her work in helping FA-class MILHIST articles achieve and maintain FA-class status, and the project part notes that "Nominees should generally be members of the WikiProject," meaning that a few good editers outside the project may still be eligable for the award.

  • Mmm, I don't know. It's a good article, to be sure; but we've mostly awarded this for a long-term pattern of top-caliber (i.e. A-Class or FA) writing, rather than for a single article, no matter how excellent. Particularly as this hasn't been taken through a formal review process yet, it strikes me as a more appropriate occasion for an award of the regular WikiChevrons (which I note that Dapi hasn't yet received in any case).   • I agree with Kirill here. MisterBee1966 could consider awarding the standard WikiChevrons himself. This is not to say that, longer-term, Dapi will not be a suitable recipient, it just seems a bit premature right now. (Incidentally, this reminds me, we really ought to put a nowiki subst string just below the mention of the Chevrons on the awards page to make it easier to hand out. Bwmoll3

I'd like to nominate Bwmoll3 (talk · contribs) in recognition of his superior contributions to very many US Air Force pages. He's methodically gone though USAF wings and installations vastly improving more than I can count. MBK004

I hereby nominate MBK004 for the chevron w/oak leaves award for his outstanding effort to improve our compliment of naval ships by updating infoboxes, replacing deprecated infoboxes, and locating sources for ships in the employment of their respective countries navies. He has received two chevron awards for working on the tag and assess drive and USS Illinois (BB-65), respectively, and is a member in good standing with both our project and WP:SHIPS.

A request to ignore all rules
I'd like to seek consensus to award User:Hlj the Wikichevrons with Oak leaves even though Hal isn't a member of this project, and even though he's never received the wikichevrons, though he did receive similar acclaim from Kirill back in 2006. IMHO, he's one of the most consistently fine editors in the ACW cluster, and many of our ACW battles, biographies and theaters articles would be impoverished without the enduring contributions and keen eyes of this retiring yet accomplished editor. I've posted a similarly named thread here. Please take any support or other discussion there. Sorry for the cross post, but in this case, IMHO, an exception might best be granted. However, his aces article has 11 refs (with one repeated quite a few times) from eight total books. Assuming that holds for his other FLs (which I have no reason to doubt), that kind of dedication over three years should be rewarded. Although not a member of our project, and not a recipent of the wikichevrons, I feel that the circumstances surrounding this particular incident warrent more than just a simple chevrons, so I am asking for special consideration for this nomination, and point out that as our criteria specifically states generally members and generally recieved chevrons first, we have occasionally bent the rules in the past for editors worthy of such acclaim. Cplakidas (aka Constantine)

I'd like to throw Constantine's name into the ring. (Cplakidas (talk · contribs)) It seems like I see a DYK on the Byzantines at least once a week, and every time I look at the article's history he's had a hand in it. In total, Constantine has 96 DYKs, one FA (the massive undertaking of Byzantine navy; probably ought to count for three), one FP (a ridiculously detailed map of Constantinople), twenty GAs, and numerous article and map creations that aren't featured or weren't DYK'ed. Sandy received the Oak Leaves in September 2007, and I think it's a fine time to grant them to her once again. During the last four years, Sandy has become a FAC delegate (in November 2007), overseen quite a few changes in the FA process, including the tightening of standards and the additions of several new delegates, and has successfully dealt with a myriad of problems within the process. Anotherclown

  • As far as I know, the Content Review Medal of Merit can be freely awarded by anyone; it doesn't require a formal vote, so I'm not entirely sure what the point of this request is. Are you proposing that we establish a new formal awards process within the project? I wouldn't be opposed to that, but I would suggest that we create a more unique and "special" award for that rather than using one that's already in common circulation.       • I'm not sure if that really makes sense as a one-off thing, considering we've already awarded Nikkimaria the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves on essentially the same basis; simply giving her a "lower" award doesn't seem like the best approach—particularly as we do already have a precedent for awarding the Oak Leaves themselves multiple times.
      • Now, if the intent is to establish a more general principle of giving project-level awards to content reviewers (in addition to our ACM system, which is primarily oriented towards content creators), I would have no problem with that; in fact, I think we may have discussed something along those lines during one of the quarterly review awards cycles. However, as I mentioned above, I'd suggest coming up with something more unique (e.g. a Content Review Medal of Merit w/ Oak Leaves or something like that) for use as a project-level award rather than co-opting the existing one. MisterBee1966 (2)

I want to nominate MisterBee1966 (talk · contribs) for a second WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves. He received the award in February 2009 (four-and-a-half years ago) and he has created many more meticulously researched articles and lists since, including another five featured lists of Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross recipients (by my reckoning). He has received four A-Class Medals, five with Oak Leaves, and five with Swords since his first WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves, and this shows his commitment to the Military History WikiProject. He has served twice as a coordinator in that time, a six month stint in 2010 then a year in 2011–12. Majestic Titan Editors (IAR request)

I that this is unprecedented in the history of the award, but in accordance with the reply to a question I left Sturmvogel 66 I would like to nominate Parsecboy (talk · contribs), Cam (talk · contribs), The ed17 (talk · contribs), Dank (talk · contribs), and Saberwyn (talk · contribs) to share a Chevron with Oak Leaves award for the roles that each played in assisting with the creation of the 63-article Featured Topic Battlecruisers of the World. In making this nomination I ask the community to consider the following:

  • Each of the candidates has an equal claim to an award for the years long effort that they put into the total project by working on their corner of it,
  • Each candidate who has helped by working on this Featured Topic has made contributions of truly incredible quality or importance in the area of military history, not only by completing the single largest FT to date on Wikipedia (and in the process allowing Milhist to share in the glory of the triumph), but this is also the first time ever one Wikipedia an entire classification of ships - battlecruisers in this case - has been unconditionally at or above GA-Class,
  • In the spirit of IAR, these editors should be recognized for this outstanding accomplishment with an award, and though it is unprecedented I am asking that they be awarded a Chevron w/Oak Leaves as a group for what they accomplished.

I realize that this is the first time that such a request, and such a nomination, have been made, so I am prepared to accept a no answer if the community judges that our most prestigious award should not be handed out in this manner, however as I have said before in different ways, "nothing ventured, nothing gained."

    • Honestly, I hadn't considered how this should be listed since I was fairly certain when I posted the nomination that it'd be shot down by now (needless to say, I'm pleasantly surprised :) I think that listing the recipients individually would be best, although listing the recipients altogether would save space and would allow for one master posting of the award rather than having the citation repeat five teams for each member. Scanning the nominees for MHOTY, I kicked myself for not having put forward Hchc's name, but unfortunately nominations had closed by that time. Considering other possible recognition, I checked the list of Oak Leaves recipients and was surprised to find his name missing there too. Well, that's something we can definitely rectify, so I hereby nominate Hchc2009 for the Oak Leaves for his exemplary work over the years on medieval history, biographies and fortifications, as evidenced by his successful A-Class and/or Featured Article nominations for Henry I of England, John of England, Peasants' Revolt, Bastille and Windsor Castle among others, many GAs, and also for his consistent efforts as a reviewer. I would like to nominate Sturmvogel for his second Oak Leaves. Sturm was awarded his first Oak Leaves over four years ago. Since that time he has continued his sterling performance as a major contributor to our WikiProject. This has included two years as a Coordinator (September 2010 to September 2012), three A-Class Medals, five A-Class Medals with Oak Leaves, and five A-Class Medals with Swords. He topped the recent February-March backlog drive, is a regular winner of the monthly contest, is a consistent and keen reviewer, and provides wise advice on various aspects of the WikiProject to all and sundry. The ed17

Ed is, simply, a MilHist institution. Co-opted as a coordinator in November 2008, he decided he liked the job, and only tore himself away from it when he declined to stand in the 2014–15 election just held. In November 2010 he became one half of the Bugle newsletter's first dedicated editing team, helping to put in place the format still in use today, and only left that position in September 2012 to focus on editing the Wikipedia Signpost. Along the way he's written or co-written an amazing 25 Featured Articles. Ed was a co-recipient of the (IAR) Majestic Titans Oak Leaves last year but, owing to his continuous service as a coordinator till now, this is his first nomination for a long-overdue individual award. I nominate Nick-D for his second Oak Leaves. Nick was awarded the Oak Leaves in March 2010 at the conclusion of his last coordinatorship, a two year period from February 2008 to March 2010. Since then he has completed a second stint on the coord team, this time of three years from September 2011 to September 2014, including one year as joint lead coordinator. Since his first award, he's written (by my crappy maths), at least another 15 or so FAs, and has received two ACMs, five ACMs with Oak Leaves, and one with Swords, as well as getting buckets of GAs over the line. Nick has been a member of Operation Normandy and Operation Majestic Titan, all while continuing to work hard on articles, admin duties, editing the Bugle, and helping many with his sage and measured advice. I personally joined WP and Milhist just after Nick returned to the coord team, and benefited greatly from his advice and reviewing skills as I developed my own editing skills. Ian Rose (2)

I nominate Ian Rose for his second Oak Leaves. Ian was awarded the Oak Leaves in February 2009, and he has been a coordinator ever since until he stepped down at the recent election. This has been a pretty incredible run, topped off by an outstanding year as lead coordinator in the last tranche. If he hadn't been ineligible for the award during his years as a coord, he would almost certainly have been nominated before now, based on his work on the Bugle. Nuff said.

HJ Mitchell

Harry has been editing since 2009, and is an admin and oversighter. He's also an admin on Commons. In addition to his recently concluded four years as a coordinator of Milhist, he has been a great ambassador in the UK for our project through his involvement with Wikimedia events in the UK, such as Wikimania 2014. He fights vandals and has far more patience than I (sadly, that's not saying all that much). On a personal note, among his excellent FA/FLs are two articles about British generals, firstly a much-loved brigadier and secondly, a much-feared major-general (both of whom I worked for in Bosnia). I'll say here that having written up several Balkans-related Waffen-SS articles myself, and being highly sensitive to any sort of pro-Nazi bias, I have never seen any evidence of such bias in any of MB's work. His main area of contribution has been to improve coverage of recipients of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, which is a laudable area of endeavour. No-one should be seeking to undermine the merit of the actions of a member of the Wehrmacht because they were on the losing side, or because they were a member of the Nazi Party. It must be remembered that the Nazi Party was a popular mass movement in Germany, at least pre-war. If an individual committed crimes, or commanded a unit that did, that information should be explored in the article, of course. I think it is a great shame that such a productive editor has been hounded off WP (a least in part) by such actions, and suggest all coordinators keep a weather eye out for this behaviour. de WP is a very different beast from en WP, and has a very different culture regarding WWII topics. @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I am nominating user K.e.coffman for the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves. For just over a year now, K.e.coffman has exercised a stringent quality assurance program with a strong focus on German World War II related articles. His relentless effort has led to the deletion or redirection of numerous Knight's Cross recipients biographies (see Wikipedia talk:Notability (people)#KC recipients closed AfDs and Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Knight Cross recipients). Additionally, he is tirelessly advocating for the demotion of FAC, Military history A-Class and GA articles (some examples include Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Otto Kittel/1, Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Wolfgang Lüth/1, Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Joachim Helbig/1). Above and beyond this, he is making a tremendous effort at identifying and flushing out unreliable sources (examples include Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Additional input sought for a GAR re sources and Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard#Sources at Artur Phleps article). K.e.coffman editing history shows how consequently he deletes any intricate detail or inconsequential events, excessive cross categorization, overcited material unlikely to be challenged, unneeded iconography, over-templating, and any other Nazi fancruft. Testimonies of his achievements are well documented on his user page. With a bit of sarcasm in mind, his series of removals and diligence continues to amaze me. It is my nomination and I am asking the coordinators to pass judgement on this request, I am not withdrawing the nomination. To my understanding, the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves is not a progress award like the A-Class Medal. According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Awards, it is awarded for "The WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves are awarded by the project coordinators in the name of the project as a whole; they are intended to recognize editors who have made contributions of truly incredible quality [emphasis by me] or importance in the area of military history." As K.e.coffman stated "I believe that it describes my contributions within the project to a T and I'd be honoured to receive the award." The suggested withdrawal of the nomination more or less equates to opposing the nomination without stating why the coordinators are not supporting the nomination.   • Who knows, may the odds are not so low? Just prior to MsterBee's retirement, our relationship was quite cordial. His review of the HIAG article was thorough and fair and resulted in improvements to the article, such as by breaking out the content that eventually became Waffen-SS in popular culture.
I admire how conscientious an editor MisterBee is, and his attention to detail. I also find him to be a good reviewer; so if he decides to come back, I feel this would be the area he could add value. His participating in the recent KC holder discussion has been substantive. The outcome may not have been what MisterBee hoped for, but at least he did not accuse me of being "anti-German", like some editors did. It may surprise you guys but MisterBee has come down on my side in several Talk page discussions, such as at Mellenthin#Edit warring and Battle of Kursk#Manstein's plan.
We've obviously disagreed on whether or not the Wehrmachtbericht transcripts belong in Wiki articles. This point was most recently discussed at London Gazette vs Wehrmachtbericht, and MisterBee seems to have accepted that the consensus regarding the matter had evolved.

With this nomination, MisterBee1966 has wrongly attempted to get the coordinators to rule on whether your contributions are worthwhile. But I have received MilHist awards in the past for such activity. I was a recipient of the Military history reviewers' award, delivered by editor Peacemaker on 23 July 2016, for doing a GAR. It's listed in the Awards and kudos section on my user page.
In December 2015 I received an honorable mention in the Military History Newcomer of the Year 2015 vote for "diligence and work on checking into unsourced claims and non-NPOV language of World War II and Waffen-SS related articles" ( link). If memory serves me right, I was nominated by MisterBee and nobody treated that as a sarcastic nomination.
That's exactly what I've been doing for the past year, as MisterBee captured in the nomination. If such contributions were worthwhile then, would they not be worthwhile now? Editor TomStar81 seems to have concurred... What has changed then? @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I would like to nominate Hawkeye7 for the Wikichevrons with Oak-Leaves. Hawkeye was elected as a coordinator of the Milhist project in September 2011 and was re-elected each year until standing aside at the end of the last tranche after five years of service. I was surprised to see that he hadn't been nominated before given he's been onwiki for over eleven years. He has 50! FAs, 86 A-Class articles and 232 GAs to his credit... He was our 2012 Military historian of the year, and runner up in 2014. Having been involved in doing some of the coordinator drudge work before he developed Milhistbot, it has made the job of coordinator so much easier than it was, and he deserves this award just for that, let alone his content and coord work. His series of articles on the Manhattan Project continues to amaze me, and is making a really important contribution to the encyclopaedia... She is also a Featured Article Review coordinator and has been nominated as Military Historian of the Year three times, taking third place last year. @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I would like to nominate Dank for the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves in recognition of many years of dedication to the Military History project. Dan has been heavily involved with Milhist's review processes over many years, and has been instrumental in improving our standards for prose and copy editing. Through his copy editing and reviewing, I suspect that he would have had a hand in almost all of the FAs the project has produced over the past five or so years (if not longer). I have learnt a lot from Dan over the years, and I believe so have many others. He has also been a stalwart of the co-ord team for many years, first taking on a role in March 2010 and retaining a position for eight terms before taking a well deserved break. Beyond this, Dan also supports broader Wikipedia goals with his work on WP:TFA, and at WP:FAC, and elsewhere. I hope that you will find this a satisfactory nom. @WP:MILHIST coordinators: I would like to present Jackyd101 for your consideration to receive the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves. Jackyd101 is an old stager, having been a member of the project since 2006 by my reckoning, with their main effort being focussed on the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. They have an excellent content creation record, with 12 FAs, seven FLs, 112 GAs, DYKs out the yingyang, but also an unbelievable 241! GAN reviews to their credit! Given that GAN is one of the engine rooms of this project as well as WP as a whole, the GAN reviewing effort alone justifies this award in my view. Still very active in content creation after all these years, they currently have five articles in the GAN list. While I can't find an award of the WikiChevrons in their archives (our guidelines say a recipient should "generally" have already received the WikiChevrons), I believe this is an IAR situation. I would like to nominate AustralianRupert for a second WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves. AR received the Oak Leaves seven years ago, and since then he has been co-lead coord for one year, lead coord for three years and a coord for another. In that time he must have done hundreds of FA, A-Class and peer reviews, checked hundreds of entries and tallied the monthly contests, assessed hundreds of articles at MHAR and has been a major factor in the throughput of our assessment processes. Around all of that, he has also been a solid and collaborative content creator, as the recent FA Bougainville counterattack shows. As lead coord, he has been a great communicator and organiser, and as a coord he has always got stuck into whatever task was at hand. The only reason he has not been nominated for a second WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves before this is because he has been a coord ever since he reached the four-year mark after his first award. @WP:MILHIST coordinators: About 72 hours after I handed out the awards for work done last year, one of the recipients - Yann - received word that his featured picture nomination cleared FPC and was officially promoted to a Featured Picture. The featured picture in question is none other than the legendary image known universally as Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima, an image every bit as iconic as the battle that resulted in the photograph in the first place. For his nomination of this image and its subsequent promotion to the Featured Picture pool I hereby nominate Yann for for the WikiChevrons with Oak Leaves.

  • Comment I'm not sure about this. I agree it is iconic image, but it is just one image. While it may not have been when it was first created, these days the Oak Leaves are reserved for sustained high quality work over an extended period. For example, Adam Cuerden's Oak Leaves were for a long period of work on bringing media up to Featured quality, not just one image.
