Adding parameter to WikiProject Australia

I am investigating adding a parameter to WP Australia for Outback NSW=yes Garrie 02:05, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I take it that is only a mock-up of what the template should look like. Could you go ahead and create it? I'm not sure how... 8-( Garrie 03:33, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 16:28, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia Day Awards

Hello, all. It was initially my hope to try to have this done as part of Esperanza's proposal for an appreciation week to end on Wikipedia Day, January 15. However, several people have once again proposed the entirety of Esperanza for deletion, so that might not work. It was the intention of the Appreciation Week proposal to set aside a given time when the various individuals who have made significant, valuable contributions to the encyclopedia would be recognized and honored. I believe that, with some effort, this could still be done. My proposal is to, with luck, try to organize the various WikiProjects and other entities of wikipedia to take part in a larger celebrartion of its contributors to take place in January, probably beginning January 15, 2007. I have created yet another new subpage for myself (a weakness of mine, I'm afraid) at User talk:Badbilltucker/Appreciation Week where I would greatly appreciate any indications from the members of this project as to whether and how they might be willing and/or able to assist in recognizing the contributions of our editors. Thank you for your attention. Badbilltucker 20:16, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

Renaming project

Given the advent of Australian state projects (WA, VIC and TAS, so far), perhaps it would be worthwhile to utilise this project for a broader Wikipedia:WikiProject New South Wales? Such a project would include the area already covered, but would broaden the scope to also cover other non-metropolitan areas in New South Wales (the metropolitan areas being already covered by WikiProject Sydney and WikiProject Lake Macquarie). Would there be any reasonable objections to this?--cj | talk 13:00, 30 December 2006 (UTC)

This was a proposed project - initially GoldenWattle and I were tossing around getting contributions to (from my viewpoint) a region around the NSW Riverina. But lack of interest / failed promotion saw little eventuate...Garrie 07:14, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Renaming/rescoping

Have renamed accordingly and redone the front page. I'd like to get a few people involved and see if we can get the front page fixed up and get this thing going properly. Will look into once I come off wikibreak :) Orderinchaos 06:04, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

Riverina

It appears that the New South Wales project is about to become a reality. Well done to those involved. How do others see the Riverina project fitting in with this one. Is Riverina a child of this project? Should Riverina articles be assessed for NSW and Riverina projects or will this filter up to the NSW project? Not knowing enough about how projects are put together I don't really have an opinion at this stage. -- Mattinbgn/ talk 23:54, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

As far as I know it has two parents - NSW and Places - much like the city ones. Currently the focus with NSW is with incorporating places that are orphaned from any mid-low level project, and with things which relate to the entire State such as government organs, statewide organisations and politics, and local government areas. Orderinchaos 00:14, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

"Hunter region" vs "Hunter Valley"

There was some discussion over at WP:WSS/P about the difference between the Hunter region, and the Hunter Valley. As I understand it, the former is an officially-defined region for statistical and quango-ish purposes, being defined as an agglomeration of council areas; and the latter is a more informal term, corresponding to at least roughly the same area. But the latter is completely unsourced, and being not at all familiar with NSW, I could be quite mistaken. Can someone knowledgeable look at these articles with a view to refactoring, cross-referencing, and sourcing? Alai 18:22, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

You are almost right. As a native of "the Hunter" I can say that your definition of "Hunter region" is correct. The "Hunter valley", although, is generally used to cover a smaller area - mostly using the geographical definition (i.e. the land around where the Hunter River and its tributaries flow). Even though Newcastle is situated at the mouth of the Hunter, it is not normally included in the definition "Hunter Valley". But it does include a lot of smaller "country" cities (Maitland, Cessnock, Scone, etc.). Similarly, Lake Macquarie is not in the Hunter Valley, but it belongs to the Hunter region.
I have no references for this, only many years of personal experience :)
Just to add a bit more confusion, the term "Newcastle/Hunter" is sometimes used - this is identical to "Hunter region" - 52 Pickup 07:37, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
There's definitely scope for improvement in the articles for both, one's basically a short list and the other is, well, in need of help. :) Orderinchaos 09:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
I'll see what I can do, but I can't promise anything in the short term. Working on Aussie stuff isn't so easy for me any more, since I left there a couple of years ago and so I concentrate more on my new home. Plus I can see that I'll have to take a long break from Wikipedia very soon. - 52 Pickup 11:53, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
I was telling someone recently that the big thing about Wikipedia is that it *is* a volunteer endeavour, no-one's obliged to do anything and people contribute as much or as little as they're able to do or have the desire to do at any given time. I contribute a lot because I'm a uni student and have a lot of loose ends, but that will probably be *very* different next year when I'm fully employed and my days are taken up preparing for the next. Best of luck with it and if you need anything just shout :) Orderinchaos 18:07, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
No worries. I'll just put it on my long list of things to do. Working on far too many things at once is a good thing - if you're running stale, you can then switch to something completely different. It's a quiet period for me at the moment, but next month I'll be changing jobs and moving to another country, so spare time will come down to zero. Also, it's summer here at the moment, which is another distraction :) - 52 Pickup 18:30, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Formatting

Hope nobody minds but I decided the original format of the front page was unmaintainable (works for a portal, not so well for a WP) so subst'd it back in, got rid of the pretty boxes (apart from the header) and created a heading system and TOC. Have left old page for Participants intact for edit history/summary purposes. Orderinchaos 09:54, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Good idea. Better to keep project pages at low maintenance. - 52 Pickup 11:48, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
The portal style are good for getting people in, but don't really encourage participation IMO, and plus it was getting too difficult to maintain them as they were. Orderinchaos 18:02, 7 August 2007 (UTC)
True, portals always look to me a little set in stone. For project layout, maybe you should make more use of {{WPAustralia Navigation}}. It has links to all other Aussie projects and clearly shows that each subproject is not totally isolated. I maintain WikiProject Former countries and the sidebar there is pretty handy for taking care of this. - 52 Pickup 18:30, 7 August 2007 (UTC)

Articles on regions

Hi - we have two articles with significantly overlapping content that shoudl be merged: Geographic Divisions of New South Wales and Regions of New South Wales. Any preference as to direction of merger - ie which name should prevail?--Matilda talk 02:56, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Good question! No preference on name but the content in GD looks more sound, although content from Regions may be usable to improve its scope. Orderinchaos 03:12, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Help please

Could SKS please tell me why "The neutrality of this article is disputed" (Nundle) and /or if it still stands since I contributed additional info and the photos. I also wrote an article on Hanging Rock, New England, NSW as there was also another Hanging rock in NSW. Should the title be left as is or located to the original entry, which seems secondary to the N Eng village? Cgoodwin (talk) 03:25, 23 May 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 21:09, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for New South Wales

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:09, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Just noting it here to attract more eyes. Notice and discussion here. Orderinchaos 02:15, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

Milestone Announcements

Announcements
  • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
  • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
  • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 22:09, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:08, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. — Headbomb {ταλκκοντριβς – WP Physics} 09:28, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

Wikiproject Blue Mountains

Would anyone here be interested in a wkiproject for the Blue Mountains.De Mattia (talk) 06:27, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

The only regional project I know that has succeeded is WikiProject Riverina. Others failed basically because there wasn't the commitment behind them to keep them going, which was how the state projects came to be formed in the first place. From personal experience I'd suggest starting something in your userspace, advertise it on WP:AWNB and on this project's talk page, and see how you go in terms of article improvement. Orderinchaos 07:21, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Would I have your support in any project of the sort? When a Wikiproject becomes inactive, it just sits there waiting to be kick-started again doesn't it? I'll just wait and see what happens. De Mattia (talk) 07:35, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
I would certainly *like* to assist, although whether time permits is another matter (I'm a full time student, soon to be full time employee, and I already look after quite a few sections of the Politics and Places wikiprojects.) I'm Perth-based although I have a fairly good understanding of the various resources available online, and if you are local to the area then you'd likely have access to book sources as well. In terms of starting a new WikiProject - wouldn't it be possible to work through this one? Usually a new project is created when the top level is too busy to worry about the details. In Perth for example we merged the Perth project into the WA one as the Perth one had become dormant and WP:WA editors were doing all the maintenance. Orderinchaos 09:09, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. — Carl (CBM · talk) 03:42, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Photos required from New South Wales

I am currently working on many various articles for which I require photos from around the world. I am currently requiring photos from New South Wales for these articles, and I was hoping that this message would reach a photographer who can take the photos for me. The photos I currently require are listed at User:Russavia/Required_photos#Bombala.2C_New_South_Wales, User:Russavia/Required_photos#Dungog.2C_New_South_Wales, User:Russavia/Required_photos#Sydney and User:Russavia/Required_photos#Wollongong.2C_New_South_Wales. If any photographers can assist with this, I would be most appreciative. Please leave any comments or questions for me on my talk page at User_talk:Russavia as I am unlikely to read replies. Thanks in advance for any assistance which can be provided. Cheers, --Russavia I'm chanting as we speak 06:20, 19 April 2010 (UTC)

New South Wales articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the New South Wales articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 21:23, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Wikimedians to the Games

If there are any sport fans lurking around, Wikimedians to the Games is a collaboration drive to improve Australian Paralympic articles, with the most active contributors having an opportunity to go attend the Paralympic Games and to cover the Games behind the scenes with a press pass. The top two contributors will get their airfare and accommodation paid for. :) The drive official starts on 10 January 2012. --LauraHale (talk) 10:02, 31 December 2011 (UTC)

If you're participating or considering in participating in Wikimedians to the Games, you may be interested in attending the events below. They may provide an opportunity to get information to write a Wikinews article or to take pictures for points on Commons. If you're not participating, it would still be great to see people attending these events to take pictures for use on Wikipedia and Wikinews. If you do decide to attend, consider hosting a Wikimedia meetup at the end or the evening of the event, or even just letting HOPAU organisers know you are planning to attend. If you leave a message on my talk page, I can help you promote the meetup. :) If you need help with organising attendance because of transport cost issues or accessibility in terms of wanting press access, again please get in touch. :) --LauraHale (talk) 06:51, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Australian Roads

Hi folks - anyone with any interest - there is a new Australian project Wikipedia:WikiProject Australian Roads - please have a look. sats 02:02, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

I'm requesting a popular pages listing like Wikipedia:WikiProject_Australia/Popular_pages. I can't imagine any objection, but speak now if you've got one. --99of9 (talk) 10:37, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Pageview stats

After a recent request, I added WikiProject New South Wales to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject New South Wales/Popular pages.

The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let me know. Thanks! Mr.Z-man 00:38, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Scope: all of NSW or just regional NSW?

I started including WP Sydney articles in WP NSW example diff, but then I realized that the scope of WP NSW is a little ambiguous. The intro reads "articles and media related to New South Wales, Australia, particularly those relating to the state as a whole, or to areas outside the WikiProject Sydney, WikiProject Canberra and WikiProject Riverina areas of interest." So, we're not particularly covering Sydney articles, but are we covering them at all? Perhaps everything included in WP Syd/Can/Riv should be included in NSW as NSW-importance=low? --99of9 (talk) 02:27, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

considering the lack of response, and the extraordinary number of NSW articles and categories not tagged for NSW, I would suggest any project tagging is better to be able to get a better sense of what is missing or not covered. satusuro 07:44, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Murder of Leigh Leigh FAC

The article Murder of Leigh Leigh, which is listed under the scope of this project, is currently nominated for featured status. See Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Murder of Leigh Leigh/archive1. It currently has two people supporting it, but more reviews are needed. For those unfamiliar with FAC, reviews most be reasonably thorough; one line reviews are not very helpful. I would be ever so grateful if someone could review my nomination. Thanks. Freikorp (talk) 13:43, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

The article now has enough reviews to pass per se, though as one of the FAC coordinators has noted, none of the reviewers did a source check for accuracy and/or close paraphrasing. This is now needed in order for the article to pass. If someone could spare the time to do some source checks I would appreciate it. The article uses many offline newspaper and journal sources; I can email pdf copies of these to anyone on request, though there are plenty of online source which can be used for source checks as well. Thanks. Freikorp (talk) 03:08, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
The nomination is now at the bottom of the list, and is liable to be closed without further notice. It still requires a source review; I would be eternally grateful if someone could give it one. Please state your intention to review at the nomination before reviewing as the nomination may be closed soon otherwise. Thanks. Freikorp (talk) 09:57, 10 November 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Does anyone have any help for Draft:Guide Dogs NSW/ACT? I saved it on the off hand that it's notable but I really have no interest in working on the article myself and the creator seems to have abandoned it. --TKK! bark with me! 01:59, 19 January 2015 (UTC)

What needs verifying for the Anglo-Australian Telescope?

Please bear with me if this is answered elsewhere - I did look but could not find it. The list of "Things you can do" includes verify Anglo-Australian Telescope. I took a look at that article, and there are no flags to indicate anything needing verification. Its references are not extensive, but they don't seem to be a problem either. What am I missing: what verification is required? --Gronk Oz (talk) 15:04, 21 January 2015 (UTC)

WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: WikiConference Australia 2015

As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

  • indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
  • add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it’s great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don’t want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at kerry.raymond@wikimedia.org.au or committee@wikimedia.org.au

We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. Kerry (talk) 00:19, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Folks, just letting you know we will not be proceeding with Wikiconference Australia 2015 originally proposed for 3-5 October 2015. Thanks to those of you who expressed your support. You are free to attend the football finals instead :-) Kerry (talk) 08:11, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

Team up to bring an article to GA class

Eden George was a colourful character; he had a career as politician and businessman in New Zealand and New South Wales. I'm looking to team up with an Australian editor to bring the article to GA class; please comment on its talk page if you'd like to help. Schwede66 18:06, 2 April 2016 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:16, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

New 5000 Challenge for Australia

Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge and the wider Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge for the UK which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. If you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Australia and Oceania like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1600 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for Australia but fuelled by a contest if desirable to really get articles on every state/territory and subject mass improved. After every 100 articles done for Australia this would feed into the main Oceania one. I will start a 1000 one for your state if there is the support. I would like some support from wikipedians here to get the Challenge off to a start anyway with some articles to make doing a Destubathon for Australia and Oceania worthwhile! Cheers.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:14, 20 November 2016 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject New South Wales/Archive 1 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 18:05, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject New South Wales/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject New South Wales.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject New South Wales, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:49, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

I have now reorganised all 1218 requests in Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in New South Wales into a tree of subcategories of the various local government areas, people, fauna and flora. Within City of Sydney, the breakdown also extends to individual suburbs for those with a lot of requests (e.g. Sydney central business district, The Rocks, et). The subcategories range from 1 to 36 entries, making the task less overwhelming. Each geographic subcategory has a link to produce a map of all of the requests in that area, to make it easier to plan your photo route. So please see if you can help with photos requested in your local area or while out and about on holidays. Kerry (talk) 11:18, 27 March 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

NSW Blue Plaques

Hi, just wanted to let you know I've drafted a page on the NSW Blue Plaques program, which is under development by Heritage NSW. Unlike the Victorian scheme, there isn't a 1:1 mapping with the State Heritage Register, so it would benefit from having a page of its own. In general, most of the items will have their own wiki page already, so the Blue Plaques page will be a useful summary of significant people, places & events for NSW. The page is here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:New_South_Wales_Blue_Plaques

Draft:New_South_Wales_Blue_Plaques

Its been 10+ years since I wrote wiki pages, and its great to see how much the editor has improved! I'm sure there are many improvements that could be made, especially linking and aligning to other NSW sites and would appreciate any input.

Not sure how & who gives approval to post the finished article?

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.
