Titles?

I've been submitting lots of article move requests lately, but I'm not sure quite sure what to do with these:

Any ideas? Mostly the multiple copies is what's throwing me off because then disambiguating by location is not necessarily an option. ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:43, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

Also, what about Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Anahtar) and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Embassy of Turkey, Washington, D.C.)? These should be moved to "statue of..." titles as well, but both are located in Embassy Row. ---Another Believer (Talk) 05:04, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

@Another Believer: For the first two, I'd suggest Statue of John Marshall and Statue of Crown Princess Märtha. Judging from Commons the only statues of Carroll are casts of this one work by W. W. Story, and the same goes for Kirsten Kokkin's statue of Crown Princess Märtha – so no disambiguation is needed for either article.
The Burke is different because in addition to casts of James Havard Thomas's statue in Bristol and Washington, there's also one by John Henry Henry Foley in Trinity College, Dublin. Following the example of Bust of Winston Churchill (Epstein), of which there are multiple casts, I'd suggest Statue of Edmund Burke (Thomas).
For the Atatürks, I'd suggest Statue of Kemal Atatürk (Anahtar, Washington, D.C.) and Statue of Kemal Atatürk (Hall, Washington, D.C.). I think choosing a briefer version of the subject's name than is in the parent article's title would be a sensible application of WP:CONCISE. The artist's name followed by the place name in the disambiguation would follow the convention for other artworks such as David with the Head of Goliath (Caravaggio, Rome). Ham II (talk) 20:42, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
  • Why not just leave them as they are, especially the Marshall statue which stands at the Supreme Court building. There is no reason to change the name of the historical honoring of Chief Justice John Marshall at the court itself, especially as a named statue. Randy Kryn (talk) 21:42, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
The specific forms of the names (e.g. Brigadier General Thaddeus Kosciuszko vs. General Thaddeus Kosciuszko, which link to articles on different sculptures, when they should redirect to Thaddeus Kosciuszko) don't have the historical significance you read into them, and generally seem to be based on the (sadly) unsystematic naming in the Smithsonian's database or the National Register of Historic Places, not the imagined intentions of the artists. It's been repeatedly shown how usage in reliable sources can vary – in one of the cases here, between "Statue of John Marshall", "Chief Justice John Marshall", "John Marshall: Chief Justice of the United States", etc. What's the argument for the significance of Chief Justice John Marshall as a choice of words? The argument about the importance of the sculpture is irrelevant to it. Ham II (talk) 16:53, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

I've submitted a request at Talk:Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (Anahtar). ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:39, 28 March 2020 (UTC)

John Marshall

Speaking of Moves

Could someone explain to me the naming rationale of sculptures here at WP? Why are things described as Statue of George Washington or Bust of George Washington or Equestrian Statue of George Washington and not George Washington Statue, George Washington Bust, etcetera? What about sculptures that contain more than one human figure? Or non-figurative statue portraits? Is Jean Arp's Demeter a statue? Arp, Demeter Is this a statue of Demeter? Vignettie: Demeter Sicklemoon (talk) 07:53, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

There was long discussions last year, mostly at this link, & mostly dealing with George Washington-type situations. Non-portrait sculptures follow the usual rules at Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style/Visual_arts#Article_titles, which were amended after the discussion. Hope that helps. Not all existing article titles follow the rules - the George Washington ones were in a terrible mess. Johnbod (talk) 10:25, 24 April 2020 (UTC)

New category: Dishonoured statues

I just discovered the newly created Category:Dishonoured statues. Confederate statues and those depicting slave owners come to mind, given ongoing news coverage. Feel free to help populate the category! ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:57, 11 June 2020 (UTC)

It needs a better name though. This one is not at all clear and rather POV. Johnbod (talk) 12:38, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Johnbod, I don't have a solution but I agree. Quite subjective. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:03, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Category:Statues removed or destroyed for political reasons perhaps? One could put it up at CfD & see what other suggestions emerge. Johnbod (talk) 14:08, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Johnbod, Or simply Category:Removed monuments and memorials? We could aways have subcats for Confederate monuments and memorials, Monuments and memorials removed during the George Floyd protests, etc. ---Another Believer (Talk) 14:14, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
That's a tad bland & imprecise. Those subcats exist already, & I've been unitingt some - see the category now. Johnbod (talk) 14:26, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
I disagree re being POV. While difficult to define precise ('political', ...), this is the essence of the categopry. Just "Destroyed" or "Removed" or "Vandalised" may be easier to classify without issue, but does not emcompass the encyclopedic point to note. IOW, just because it is difficult to define is not a reason to remove it. And this 'political' (or social, historical) reason is reflected in the word 'dishonoured'. Cicumscribe that word does not help, the title does not have to describe the category's definition as in a dictionary. -DePiep (talk) 14:58, 11 June 2020 (UTC)
Could you clarify what "IOW" means?

Solovetsky Stone (Saint Petersburg)

Should Solovetsky Stone (Saint Petersburg) be part of this project? ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:05, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Found object? I suppose so; it "behaves" like sculpture. Does it matter? Johnbod (talk) 03:34, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
Johnbod, Not a life or death matter, of course, but the article has been nominated for Good status and so if part of this project would be added to our project page showcase. Just curious if project members had a preference. I'm inclined to add the project tag to the talk page. ---Another Believer (Talk) 03:36, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
Fair enough, thanks. Johnbod (talk) 04:00, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

More moves...?

I want to thank everyone who have been participating in many move requests lately. These discussions have been needed for a long time, and I'm pleased to see a lot more consistency across Wikipedia articles about public art and sculpture.

Here are more possibly needing to be moved:

Thoughts? Concerns? Sometimes hard to know when I should be bold and just move pages, or create move discussions. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:56, 12 April 2020 (UTC)

Monuments and memorials removed during the George Floyd protests

I invite project members to help improve Monuments and memorials removed during the George Floyd protests and the articles about the individual sculptures. Thank you ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:19, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

I'm struggling to keep up with all the monument updates. Anyone have a moment to determine the best title for Monument to Confederate war soldiers, Fort Worth? I'm sure the current title is not ideal. ---Another Believer (Talk) 19:50, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
All of the coverage is local news, so doesn't look notable as a topic, but if it has no formal title, how about Tarrant County Courthouse Confederate soldier monument? News describes the courthouse as its location, not as much associated with Fort Worth. czar 08:14, 12 June 2020 (UTC)

Sam Davis statues

Reminder to disambiguate/rename Statue of Sam Davis and Sam Davis Statue. ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:53, 14 June 2020 (UTC)

As a non-specialist I was struggling to find the rules for naming of public statues. I knew I'd read a discussion somewhere, some time ... and eventually found my way to this page and the discussion linked above, and then finally to MOS:ART and specifically MOS:VATITLE. Would it be possible to add a note somewhere to the project page to alert visiting non-specialists to the fact that there's a section of MOS devoted to visual arts and it includes sculpture? I'd been confused by seeing some statues dabbed by brackets, some by commas - all is now clear.

I created Statue of Edmund Burke, with hatnotes linking to and from Edmund Burke (Thomas): although casts of the same statue they each have so much local context that it would seem wrong to shoehorn them into one article. Possibly they should both be at disambiguated titles, with a dab page... PamD 09:32, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

Yes, I then moved the Bristol one to Statue of Edmund Burke, Bristol and created a dab page. I leave it to sculpture experts to decide whether to rename the Washington article. PamD 10:25, 15 June 2020 (UTC)

GA project?

An editor nominated Statue of Frederick Douglass (Rochester, New York) for Good status but was unable to complete the review. I don't think it'd take too much work to get the entry promoted to Good article status. If any project members care to take a quick look at the feedback received, address, and re-nominate, by all means! If not, I'll put this in my stack of things to get to eventually. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Sculptures of the National Statuary Hall Collection has been undergoing an overhaul lately. Another editor has been working on the list, and hopes to promote to FL status eventually, and I've been working on moving articles to comply with WP:VAMOS, based on some of User:Ham II's research and recommendations. There are many more moves to be done, but I invite other project members to take a look at the list and share any feedback or make further improvements.

Springstone

I've recently created the article Springstone. Sources differ as to whether this is a form of chlorite or serpentinite mineral. I've gone with chlorite, since the sources giving this include print works, not just auction sites, and because other sources describe areas which have deposits of both springstone and serpentinite, suggesting the two are distinct. However, I'd greatly appreciate input from editors with expertise in this field who can help ensure to get this right. -- The Anome (talk) 13:57, 2 March 2021 (UTC)

Update: I've now removed the reference to chlorite. The sources are just too ambiguous to draw any conclusion. -- The Anome (talk) 05:23, 3 March 2021 (UTC)
