named vs. numbered parameters

I've changed the template to allow the use of numbered (unnamed) parameters. With named parameters, adding an airline at a later time might required to change the numbers on all existing parameters. — 3247 (talk) 21:55, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Well just copy

 {{airport-dest-list
 | ACME Air | Ebonia [begins 17 May]
 | Foofly | Munich
 }}

into the article where you want the table. Change the information as needed for that article. Then simply add additional lines as needed for more then two airlines. You can use the preview button to see if you are doing it correctly. Vegaswikian (talk) 19:50, 11 February 2009 (UTC)

Good Lord! Some airports (Eg Roissy and Rome) have more airlines than the current template supports. So, what happens, is that all of the airlines don't show up and some of them get cut off. Collapsible list

Just wondering can we make this list collapsible. It looks very huge list in some case like say Mumbai Airport, New York etc. KuwarOnline ^Talk 14:00, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Well-designed airports like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL), Denver International (DEN), etc...

...have a layout that causes a minor difficulty in using this template.

Basically the issue is that the terminals are designed such that ticketing, check-in, baggage claim take place in various buildings accessible by roads/ground transportation (called "terminals" at ATL) while the gates for those waiting for flights take place in a distinct group of buildings at which aircraft park (called "concourses" at ATL).

Airlines are assigned gates at one or more "concourses", and are assigned check-in counters and baggage claim facilities at one or more "terminals". However, unlike most airports these assignments are independent in that the concourse an airline is assigned is not necessarily related to the terminal they are assigned.

The template is only designed to have three columns, which works for most airports.

Example - JFK airport

etc.

The solution I attempted on the ATL page is to combine both the Terminal assignment and the Concourse assignment into the third column, like this:

Korean Air        ...            North/E
United            ...            North/T, D
etc.

which was reverted.

Since many airports are designed with either the ATL layout or other layouts that have separate "Terminals" and "Concourses"/"Airsides" (such as TPA/MCO), shouldn't the template or the WikiProject have a way to address this?

My suggestions - If this is a problem for many airports the template should allow a fourth column. If not, then for the airports with separate terminal and concourse assignments, the main table should have only the airlines and destinations, and another table should have the terminals and concourses like this:

Delta       ...
United      ...
etc.

Delta       South       T, A, B, C, D, E

Airlines per destination?

Would it not be more useful to show the airlines for each destination? After all I do not usually want to fly a particular airline and then choose a destination: I usually want to fly somewhere and then I choose the airline. Anyone disagree and if so why? Jzlcdh (talk) 20:19, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

I agree with Vegaswikian; since Wikipedia is not a travel guide we don't need to provide this. If you're trying to decide who to fly to a particular destination, you're better off using a travel booking site as this will include airfares and connecting flight options which Wikipedia doesn't. That said, I have use Wikipedia's airport articles to see what airlines fly between a particular city pair; I simply use my browser's Find feature to search for the name of the other city. -- Hawaiian717 (talk) 23:57, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

I had a look at the guideline referred to above and it is a guideline against having too much detail for tourists. However my argument would be that (unless you are in the airport or airline business) where one can fly to direct from a particular airport is a more notable feature of the airport than which airlines fly from it. But maybe there is some way of having the template (or a new template) where the destinations could be sorted as well as the airlines. Thus making the information for large airports more readable both for those interested in airlines and those interested in destinations. Presumably one could then also incorporate the collapsibility suggested in another post above. But I am not enough of a Wikipedia expert to know how to do that. The only way I can think of to do it would be to have an individual row for each airline and destination combination. I've taken the example below from Molokai Airport, and you can imagine how big this would be for a major hub airport; I imagine that we'd have several screenfuls each just for Delta and AirTran at Atlanta, for example). The one advantage of this format I could see would be making it easier to add additional information, particularly breaking the single destination column into city, state/province, country, and airport, for example.

Not done: The dates are not specifically passed to this template, so this template cannot be edited to change the format of the dates. You will have to go to each article using the template and edit the article to specify the correct year in the dates. Sortable should be optional

Expansion depth

When I try to add a citation needed tag to the destination table at Logan Airport, I get an expansion depth exceeded error, suggesting that this table is right at the expansion limit. I don't understand the issues involved (and the essay WP:UNNEST suggests that I'm not alone!), but could someone who is involved with this template find a way to reduce the number of levels involved? The inability to add a citation needed tag is undesirable, to say the least. Thanks!

Fourth column option

I think that an option for a fourth column should be added to the list. This could be useful in articles for airports whose airlines have separate locations for terminals and concourses/gate locations. Many airport articles like this put all the information in one column, which can make readability very confusing. Examples of articles that could benefit from this are McCarran International Airport, Orlando International Airport, O'Hare International Airport. –Dream out loud (talk) 14:29, 9 September 2015 (UTC)

Unsortable reference column

Is it possible to add an unsortable column to the table? We are having discussions at WT:AIRPORTS about referencing issues, and this would help. Please don't use edit requests to ask questions. Edit requests are to request already determined and tested edits to be implemented. COVID-19 suspensions

If you wonder about if and how to document this, there is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Airports#COVID-19-related Schedule Suspensions/Changes. It seems to say that such suspensions should not be mentioned. If an airline reports they cancel a route more permanently, then the destination should be removed.--BIL (talk) 08:28, 7 May 2020 (UTC)

Visual Editor concern

Unless I'm using it wrong, this template appears to makes it much harder (impossible unless you know the cite code off by heart) to add references to destinations in the visual editor. What advantages does this template have over just using a normal table? I think it's important that pages work with the visual editor where possible, especially as people are frequently reverted for not properly sourcing additions to airport pages. Three errors (recommendations) on airport destination lists

We need to address some common errors in airport destination lists.

First, please spell resumes correctly.

Second, please stop putting resumes inserted of begins when the reference article says “new route beginning.” For example in “Denver International Airport” Wikipedia article says in the Fronter section (shown below) that Harrisburg International Airport is resuming but, in the article “Frontier Airlines Announces 27 Nonstop Routes, 2 New International Destinations” by Frontier it says “Ultra-low fare carrier Frontier Airlines (NASDAQ: ULCC) today announced a major expansion of service, adding 27 nonstop routes, including new destinations Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico. The airline is also significantly growing its service from Philadelphia and Raleigh-Durham. To celebrate, Frontier is offering fares as low as $29.*”

The third and final thing is that some flights that are seasonal are shown as a daily flight. For example In “Oakland International Airport” Wikipedia article says that in the Hawaiian Airlines section (shown below) that Kona International Airport is a daily flight but, in the article “Hawaiian Airlines To Add Kona-Oakland Route In June” By Aaron Karp it says “The carrier will launch daily flights between Kona (KOA) and Oakland (OAK) from June 15. The service will be seasonal, operating through Sept. 6.”
