Untitled[edit]

"Apostolic Tradition" is a much broader topic than this single text by Hyppolitus. I would like to propose that this article be moved to Apostolic Tradition (Hyppolitus) and give this title to the broader concept. Alistair Stewart, Alessandro Bausi and the Aksumite Ethiopic version[edit]

The current text of the article reflects the tendency of scholarship around 15 years ago to question both the connection between the text of the Apostolic Tradition and Hippolytus of Rome; and also the degree to which the liturgical forms witnessed in the texts as reconstructed by such editors as Gregory Dix genuinely transmitted Roman practice of the third century. The rediscovery of the Aksumite Ethiopic version - in so far as it generally supports the fragmentary Latin version of the Verona Palimpsest - is claimed by Bausi and Stewart as strongly supporting the Roman and 'Hippolytan' origins of the Apostolic Tradition and of the liturgies it transmits; while decisively refuting several of the speculations still present in the current article. Assuming other editors do not object, I propose rewriting the article substantially on the basis of the second edition of Stewart's translation (which is itself substantially based on Bausi's 2012 publication of the Aksumite Ethiopic text).
