Which is it?[edit]

  • Modern beer brewing began for India in the early days of the British Empire — the mid-1700s.
  • In the late 1820s Edward Dyer moved from England to set up the first brewery in India...producing Asia's first beer

Modern beer brewing began for India in the early days of the British Empire — the mid-1700s. means what it says that beer was brewed especially for the Indian market in breweries in England, including India Pale Ale brewed at George Hodgson's Bow Brewery in east London. Hodgson began shipping Hodgson's India Ale during the 1790s. India ale was a variation of his pale ale, which Londoners had been drinking since the mid-1750s.
In the late 1820s Edward Dyer moved from England to set up the first brewery in India...producing Asia's first beer again means exactly what it says that the first brewery set up in India was built by Edward Dyer in the late 1820's.

Reference to Australian Lagers.[edit]

Australian lagers are not 5%ABV. Nowadays most of them are around 4.6%. They were up around 5% until about 5 years ago when breweries started to reduce gravities every year due to the annual indexed Federal Government's tax hikes. This is no longer a valid comparison and if not removed shortly will do so myself. Perhaps a more appropriate comparison would be USA mainstream lagers such as Budweiser or Millers which are still 5% ABV (4% alcohol by weight).--MichaelGG (talk) 11:10, 17 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I believe the reference is to the beer brand "Australian Lager" which is very popular in India together with the strong beer "Australian Max". ~ Rameses (talk) 18:32, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
