Problems with the recipe[edit]

At the present the following problems seem to exist with the recipe:

  • There should not be any sugar in a good beer recipe.
  • The malt should be in hotter water to do an extraction of the level they talk about.
  • To my understanding, this is an ale. I've read a fair amount of articles that call it an ale.
  • That said, it would help to narrow down a good ale yeast to use.
  • Oh, and can we at least decide what type of bear it is?
  • What is the alpha of the hops? And why so much tettnang? Should some be thrown in as flavoring and the rest as finishing?

Question regarding article's notability[edit]

This whole article is questionable. How many people are behind this project? Has anyone outside that, asumeably small, society ever heard of it? Is wikipedia a recipe book? Can I publish the recipe of my favourite cookies here, calling it an Open Source project? Medico80

I recall seeing an interview with the people behind it in the evening news some months back. People know about it, particularly in homebrew and open source circles. --Pekaje 09:12, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It has also recently received a lot of attention; I'd say it's notable enough now. http://www.freebeer.org/blog/ 146.50.45.95 (talk) 08:44, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Art[edit]

This article should use the pictures from the freebeer.org webpage. The picture of the bottle in the article isn't particularly good! 146.50.45.95 (talk) 08:41, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the image of the label shouldn't have all the printers marks in my opinion, it looks weird and is not actually what the label looks like on the bottle. Appelsaus6666 (talk) 14:54, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Update[edit]

The recipe has been updated on the site, but apparently not here. The most recent recipe solves some of the issues presented here. Why not update the recipe? 65.175.154.145 (talk) 23:13, 14 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Another Update[edit]

13:45 14 April 2021 (UTC) - the recipe has again been updated with the release of version 7 but its not updated here link: http://freebeer.org/blog/recipe

"Derived beers" should be replaced with "Forks"[edit]

AFAIK, that is how derived software projects are called. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.142.206.163 (talk) 19:07, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Derived beers[edit]

Some of these derivations are not derivations of the Free Beer recipe itself, only being "derivations" in the sense of having a similarity in concept/licence. They may or may not be inspired by the concept though, so linking to (some of) them could still be of value. Tkbremnes (talk) 08:28, 30 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Having checked the sources for a couple, I can find no evidence that they were inspired by Free Beer, and I would advocate removing them. The FlyingDog brewery beer is at least discussed alongside Free Beer in an article, so there is a tenuous connection, but the others don't seem to manage that. Caeciliusinhorto (talk) 08:16, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And now having gone through them all I can't find any which were inspired by Free Beer, and only two where the source cited even mentioned Free Beer; I've removed the whole lot as not relevant. Perhaps some use could be made of this article and this one, but what was in the article isn't it. Caeciliusinhorto-public (talk) 10:35, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
