Seeking Consensus

Seeking Consensus for inclusion of branches and twigs of Gurjar ethnicity. In India, Gurjar is considered as a caste for reservation purposes. @Mkrestin @Chariotrider555 Wikieditor1008 (talk) 16:27, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

Sorry. Not sure if the previous notification went through or not. @Ratnahastin @Shinjoya

Could you summarize the dispute please? Sorry, I've not been very active on Gurjar-related pages so I'm not sure. User:Utcursch has written quite a bit of this page and could probably give some input. Chariotrider555 (talk) 17:00, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

For example, Khatana, Bhadana, Kasana etc. like clans. Wikieditor1008 (talk) 17:01, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

In Relation with the Gurjara Pratihar and Rajput caste

According to one school of thought, Gurjara was the name of the territory (see Gurjara-desha) originally ruled by the Pratiharas; gradually, the term came to denote the people of this territory. An opposing theory is that Gurjara was the name of the tribe to which the dynasty belonged, and Pratihara was a clan of this tribe.[1]

According to the Agnivansha legend given in the later manuscripts of Prithviraj Raso, the Pratiharas and three other Rajput dynasties originated from a sacrificial fire-pit (agnikunda) at Mount Abu.[2] Wikieditor1008 (talk) 17:26, 15 June 2021 (UTC)

The term Gurjara tribe or Gurjara region and then their link with Gurjar caste

The meaning of historical term Gurjara is quite controversial. See Origin of the Gurjara-Pratiharas, the two polar opposite theories are such, one is that Gurjara mentioned in historical sources was name of a region, the second one says it was name of a tribe (tribe not caste). So it is quite controversial as you can see on the aforementioned page and Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty page. Now even the historians who consider Gurjara as a tribe do not specifically say that Gurjar caste and Gurjara tribe are one and the same. Some Historian like B.N. Puri who although supported Gurjara as a tribe connotation, mentions that Gurjara tribe was not a single caste but the tribe was mixture of many castes, including Brahmin, Kshatriya and many Shudra castes. Here on this page, whole history related to Gurjara word is approproated specially history of Gurjara Pratihara dynasty, there is hardly any mention that Gurjara was considered as region by many historians and hence the history of that word can mean different thing. Even the historians who mentioned the word Gurjara as tribe and not as castes are freely used here without any mention that they did not say the modern Gurjar caste is descendants of those dynasties. Why this page about modern "Gurjar" caste has been filled with "Gurjara" tribe which is different thing altogether and furthermore who might also be just a region and not tribe. Nomadic profession.

I had added the nomadic tribe status in the article which has been getting consistently removed. The remover, @LukeEmily: has argued that the sources are talking about only J&K and rest are not into that profession. However, what I didn't mention that nomadic profession is followed by all Gujjars and it is the only profession. I mentioned it along with already mentioned pastoral and agricultural activities. This nomadic profession is followed by them in the whole Himalayan belt {Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand (India), Azad Kashmir(Pakistan)}. (Reference: [3][4][5]). And, this region constitutes a large chunk of Gujjar population (source:[6]), so can't be ignored. Hence, I urge to not remove my referenced articles. Regards. Iamritwikaryan (talk) 08:49, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Iamritwikaryan, I don't know who is consistently removing your content but I did remove it once here. There are several issues. 1)The main article - body and lead - already use the word nomads so why do we have to repeat it? Someone has already put a template that the lead is too big. 2)The article does not state that they are nomadic tribes in all places, hence you are generalizing some specific characteristics to the entire community. Even if the nomadic profession is followed in the entire Himalayan belt, what about the part of the community in other places? 3)I am not sure how reliable himachalwatcher.com, www.onmanorama.com and www.thehindu.com, indianexpress.com is for such analysis that a sociologist or anthropologist makes. Can you find better sources please?LukeEmily (talk) 13:06, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

LukeEmily Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. 1) I added the word nomadic in the sentence related to the profession. Regarding, lead being too long, we can concise it, for e.g. its last paragraph which can written in a better way concisely. 2) I nowhere mentioned that they are at present nomadic tribes in all places. I mentioned it along with other professions i.e. pastoralism and agriculture. Hence, it's not generalisation of the whole community, but mention of those residing in the Himalayan belt (which is a significant number) is necessary. 3) Malayala Manorama is second oldest Malayalam newspaper and has been getting published since 1888, it's readership is over 20 million.[7][8] It's a reliable source of information, same applies for the Hindu which is a newspaper of record[9] and second most circulated English-daily in India. They're definitely reliable. I'm providing alternative to Himachal Watcher newspaper, here, planning paper by Govt. of Himachal Pradesh:"Government of Himachal Pradesh" (PDF). Hope you will look into it. Regards. Iamritwikaryan (talk) 14:52, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Iamritwikaryan, I agree that the newspapers may be legitimate, but are they reliable for history topics? I think it could be rephrased to specify locations, in which case it would not be a generalization. For example "The Gurjars in the Himalayan belt are a nomadic tribe". I am going to be off wikipedia from 1st June for some time(edit:postponed) but you can continue discussion with other editors.LukeEmily (talk) 20:54, 30 May 2022 (UTC)

The matter is not resolved, she asks whether cited sources are reliable for "history" topics. I ain't adding any historical article but present article, also wiki pages don't cover history topics only, they're inclusive of all topics. I repeatedly informed her adding nomadic profession, doesn't mean it is followed by each and everyone, I'm adding it along with agriculture and pastoralism! Don't agriculture and pastoral activities generalise those who're involved in nomadicism? She's in denial unfortunately. Iamritwikaryan (talk) 20:10, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

@Iamritwikaryan:, I don't have objection if others are OK with it. But nomad is a life style not profession I think.LukeEmily (talk) 22:42, 11 June 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, it's a source of living, albeit I didn't use the word "profession" in the main article, it was used in talk section for making things simple. Since, you're OK with it I'm adding it in the main article, you may read it carefully and point out any error, in case you encounter. Regards Iamritwikaryan (talk) 02:35, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

Not done The sources you added beside from the fact are outdated Raj era sources (except Sharma whom I will come on later) which are not allowed in caste related articles also ain't stating what you claimed. Most of them are not historians either. e.g. Jervoise Athelstane Baines was a civil administrator. Jean Drèze is a economist and activist same goes with Amartya Sen another economist.
  • At last coming to Dasharatha Sharma; this is half hearted quote which I never actually encountered in his Early Chauhan dynasties work either, this is from his book on Rajasthan. You clearly did not quote his very next line, where he rebutted this claims as outdated Raj era myths created due to mythical account of Chauhans being fire born.
  • At last, I checked your editing history, Special:Contributions/2405:205:140B:E227:76F3:4E6C:924A:AA2E; unfortunately you disrupt a lot of other articles as well by using this archaic sources from activists.

Gurjara Brahmin

I found this from the phd done on Gurjara pratihara by B.N puri and i need you guys to add this in Gurjar Wikipedia too. Here the Gotra is Krisnatreya.

"A late record, dated in the Saka year 1172 (A.D. 1250), of the time of the Yadava king Krisna, and recovered from Tasgaon (Satara Dist.) records the construction of a divine temple of kalideva, and the dedication of a village by two brothers Candradeva and Kesava whose great-grandfather was a Gurjara Brahmana of the Krisna-treya kula (gotra) from northern India."

This is taken from The History Of Gurjara Pratihara By B.N puri, page no-4. Kvjr0604 (talk) 13:30, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

Your research about Gujjar is incomplete

I have this question for you. You say that they do not have any land of their own All the mountainous areas in Pakistan, especially Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Kashmir Who owns it has been living here since an unknown date. And in Pakistan, Gujranwala, Gujarat, Gujjar Garhi, Gujjar Khan and so on, whose name is this . Gujarat is a state along the western coast of India. Its coastline of about 1,600 km is the longest in the country, most of which lies on the Kathiawar peninsula. Gujarat is the fifth-largest Indian state by area, covering some 196,024 km²; and the ninth-most populous state, with a population of 60.4 million. 2A00:F29:2A1:1522:C8A3:1C5B:9D54:B109 (talk) 14:49, 4 June 2023 (UTC)

An ethnic group?

Gurjars or Gujjars, in this article have been reffered to as an ethnic group. Gurjars are a widely spread tribe or community, nobody not a even a Gurjar regards him and others like him as part of the same ethnic group, rather a large community or tribe. They only regard themselves as an ethnic group on the basis of their homeland, culture and languages, which vary from place to place, meaning their culture is not the same. Therefore Gurjars should be regarded as a community or a large and diverse tribe, inhabiting South Asia. PeoplesRepublicOfChina01 (talk) 20:42, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Gojri or Gujari as "their" language

This article has a lot of problems and a big one is the claim that they (the Gurjars) have their own language, Gujari. Like in what sense? I do understand that Gujari is spoken by Gurjars only, but it does not mean that all Gurjars speak Gujari. No! Less than 1 percent of Gurjars speak or regard Gujari as their language. Gurjars are a large group of diverse people who are culturally, ethnolinguistically and geographically very different. A Gurjar from the Punjab regards himself as an ethnic or ethnolinguistic Punjabi and therefore regards Punjabi as his mother and native tongue, the question of Gujari doesn't even come close. Same goes for all other regions. I suggest an edit be made to fix this mistake immediately as its quite misleading in Ethnolingusitic context. 1) in the origin section - The history written is about the Rajputs and not Gujjars.

Please include theories of origin of Gujjars and not Rajputs.

2) Not even a single paragraph writes about the origin of Gujjars. This page is about Gujjars then please include their origin and not about the Rajputs. Abhimanyu200 (talk) 18:43, 18 December 2023 (UTC)

Not done: as you have not requested a specific change in the form "Please replace XXX with YYY" or "Please add ZZZ between PPP and QQQ".
Furthermore, you have not cited reliable sources to back up your request, without which no information should be added to, or changed in, any article. - Arjayay (talk) 18:49, 18 December 2023 (UTC)
